Coughlin on the Second Pick

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/11/2013 6:59 pm
“There was a play last night where they were not on the same page,” Coughlin said. “One guy signaled one thing with his body language and the other guy didn’t pick it up. That’s kind of the way this has been with him (Randle). He’s made some outstanding plays as he did the other night. … His language was a little bit indicative that he wasn’t going to (go deeper) and then he did. By that time the quarterback had thrown the ball. Eli should have seen the corner. It would have helped him to go somewhere else whether Rueben was right or wrong. I’m sure he would tell you the same thing.”
Throwing Randle under the bus

So, in essence,
SanFranGiantsFan : 10/11/2013 7:01 pm : link
it was Randle's fault.
crap
Bill in UT : 10/11/2013 7:03 pm : link
I thought you were talking about the draft
Randle's fault, but
SHO'NUFF : 10/11/2013 7:03 pm : link
Eli should've went to someone else regardless.
Randle
Arcanum : 10/11/2013 7:04 pm : link
Faked and then kept going up the field. His fake, looked as if he was going to curl.
I wonder if part of our problem
BlueHurricane : 10/11/2013 7:04 pm : link
Is teams have figured all of our mysterious body language tells we have?

I am sick of the offense based on option routes. When it works it is beautiful. When the QB and receivers are in sync it's magic. But guys get injured or you try to bring along a young guy and the offense goes to shit.
Randle
rdt288 : 10/11/2013 7:05 pm : link
He is in over his head in the offense
Randle did give a feint toward the inside
SHO'NUFF : 10/11/2013 7:09 pm : link
that probably tricked the CB to cheat up and, ultimately, grab the INT. Unfortunately, it tricked Eli, as well. A good pump fake and Randle was wide open for the score.
Jennings sat on the play
Geeman : 10/11/2013 7:11 pm : link
He never moved so had Randle stopped, he still wouldn't have been open.
Look at the formation and it was 1 high so that right sideline was wide open, had Eli held it for 1 more second that would've been a big play.
This offense is a thing of beauty when it's on...
okiegiant : 10/11/2013 7:12 pm : link
but it hasn't been on lately.

I'm not a fire them all poster but this does get old after a bit.
Manning, to my untrained eye, has looked a little skittish...

in the pocket.

I'm sure he doesn't trust his protection(and why should he)but he just does not look like his usual self as he's waiting for the play to develop.
what happened to Eli's pump fake?
SHO'NUFF : 10/11/2013 7:15 pm : link
it is so effective when he does it, but he rarely does it.
it's like
ripdumaine : 10/11/2013 7:18 pm : link

about the receivers. This is not foreign territory for Eli Manning. he has thrown many, many picks in his career. Way before Randle got here. He probably has one of the worst INT to TD ratios of any QB that started as long as he did. Granted he is in a slump, but maybe after all his experience he should know when it is time to not throw the ball
Eli has been under
TMS : 10/11/2013 7:40 pm : link
a lot more pressure this year due to the shitty Ol play and RBs who can't block or run. We have let our franchise QB down with this terrible situation. He has been hit way to much.
I also thought draft at first

Week six, lol.
TMS
lecky : 10/11/2013 7:45 pm : link
You need to stop blaming everyone else on the team for a guy who is in the same slump that he has been in numerous times before. 15 INT's in 6 games is something an undrafted rookie wouldnt do.
Eli is a ten freakin year veteran.
silverfox : 10/11/2013 7:45 pm : link
He has thrown to many receivers before some even dumber than randle. Eli is playing like a timid rookie doing stupid things that ten year veterans and two time SB Mvps don't do.

As good as this offense can be, I'll rather something like Green Bays. It's less complicated, and more explosive
Eli needs to be in a different offensive scheme
oipolloi : 10/11/2013 7:51 pm : link
this one just isn't working

the defenders have a good read on what the Giants receivers are going to do and they are baiting both Eli and the WR more and more, which is especially effective with a young guy like Randle struggling to make the right reads.

and that is on Coughlin and Gilbride.

lecky and silverfox you guys have obviously played
JCin332 : 10/11/2013 7:52 pm : link
and coached football at a very high level with insightful analysis like your above comments..
meant to say
oipolloi : 10/11/2013 7:53 pm : link
that it is on Coughlin and Gilbride as much as it is on the players (who are also definitely to blame)

and this has been going on for a while. It just reached the tipping point this year.
what ever happened to the pump fakes?
mattlawson : 10/11/2013 7:58 pm : link
honestly, eli makes it easy by never pump faking. when he does, it's usually always pay dirt.
That's the problem with this system.Everyone's guessing
Blue21 : 10/11/2013 8:14 pm : link
and hopefully guessing right.
Lance Briggs was covering Jernigan on that

jennings
SBlue46 : 10/11/2013 9:00 pm : link
picked the 2 because he watched film and knew it was
coming..i watched in slow mo and eli threw ball and it
was half way to 82 before he turned...jennings stop and
was facing Eli when he threw and jumped behind 82 to catch..
he was looking at eli when he threw...dont know why he would throw behind 82 when jennings was waiting
Because he was expecting Randle to curl, you fucking dolt.

Randle
Bleedin Blue : 10/11/2013 9:22 pm : link
should take a lesson from Eli! Eli says the mistakes are on him. Randle says Eli threw the ball behind me, then goes on to say we just weren't on the same page! I'd like to ask Randle which one of you weren't on the same page? Eli who's been doing it for ten years or him!
Randle - ( New Window )
Eli is fine in this offense
Peter in Atlanta : 10/11/2013 9:22 pm : link
It's his receivers in this offense that are the problem.
With the athletes we have at WR
Ten Ton Hammer : 10/11/2013 9:26 pm : link
And the nfl rulebook encoraging and making it fun and easy to pass, An offense this intricate seems entirely unnecessary.

It's like watching a high wire act where youre one step away from doom instead of enjoying an athletic competition.
I look at it this way..
arcarsenal : 10/11/2013 9:34 pm : link
When you have a QB like Eli and you have WR's as gifted as ours, why complicate things? Let them beat coverages. A lot of DB's in this league will struggle in man coverage against guys like Nicks and Cruz. If they want to play zones, that's fine.. we can still get guys open. Take some of the extra thinking out of it.

Some of Eli's picks are just due to him slinging it in spots he shouldn't.. but a lot of them throughout the years have also been because of these miscommunications.
I still think that
SimpleMan : 10/11/2013 9:40 pm : link
if Randle runs the correct route, its still a bad throw and still possibly a pick 6. The DB is just watching Eli the entire time and lets Randle run right by him. Eli just looks right at the spot and throws it right to the DB.
Eli
Marty866b : 10/11/2013 10:27 pm : link
Has a gunslinger mentality and throws the ball to spots if the receiver is open or not.
I think the issue is this
loafin : 10/11/2013 10:32 pm : link
Why did the corner completely ignore Randle and let him by?
IMO it is because the defensive scheme was to give Eli a pre snap read that his receiver would curl. I think because this offensive has been around for years and doesn't change game to game teams are seeing on film the option routes and which defensive scheme causes what option to be taken. Thus the high interception rate. On the flip side it is why the Giants have had luck with the deep ball because when the defense is wrong someone is going to be open deep.
I believe that Banks said the same thing durning the game

which is much better than physically unable to compete. Not sure how they can not be in sync with one another after all of the practice together. Even Eli and Nicks have had a couple of issues.

Well, he and Randle better figure it out quickly because odds are that Nicks may be playing for another team next year.
Change the system
spike : 10/11/2013 11:49 pm : link
this is f'ing Football, not brain surgery.

Most WRs can't make such precise decisions on a consistent basis, which is needed for success.
I love how Coughlin comes out and says
dep026 : 10/12/2013 12:20 am : link
its Randle's fault, and yet the braintrust here will still blame Eli. I am beginning to think the kinder new gentler BBI needs to go away.

0 and 6 does not deserve kindness. We have all waited a long time for this season and it was gone in 3 games. Eli is no stranger to turnovers throughout his career. Way before Randle got here. This is beyond ridiculous.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 10/12/2013 6:24 am : link
Well, in all probability, we're going to have a new offensive system next season. That's @ least something to look forward to. I really want to see Eli in a new system.
Plays
Simms : 10/12/2013 10:15 am : link
I am not going to judge all plays. But on the final INT to me it looked like Jacobs was open over the middle and could have gotten the 1st down or come close. Remember thinking it was him and kept yelling Jacobs, Jacobs, Jacobs right after the snap .... and the rest in history.
maybe if we just knew where guys were running
GiantTuff1 : 10/12/2013 5:43 pm : link
that would enable WR's to give more effective fakes, without 'tricking' our QB too.

This system is ridiculous. It honestly makes little sense to me. It feel so unnatural.

I can see certain option routes, like having underneath/safer 'welker' route on a play, but I can't think of any system that makes things harder than they should be than this one.

How can you get in a good drop back rhythm if you can't be absolutely sure which way the WR will break?

Even a hair of uncertainty will force you to sit in the pocket longer, and if you're not dropping back hitting the back foot and firing, you're standing there and allowing pressure to come up on you - forcing back foot throws, poor mechanics, and non-ideal footwork. Lack of rhythm becomes a severe lack of consistency. It is the signature of this offense.

It has to go after this year.
