BBI old game review- 1986 Giants @ Redskins

Matt in SGS : 10/14/2013 8:10 am
I was going to hold off posting this, but with the long break from Thursday's game to Monday, and an 0-6 start, we need something to at least take our minds off this train wreck of a season. This was a game I got a number or requests to do over the summer and to be honest, was one of my favorite Giants regular season wins ever.

Basically you had the 2 big heavyweights in the NFC East (and along with the Bears, in the NFC). Both at 11-2, both meeting up with long winning streaks, and the winner had the inside track to the division title. The Giants had come off beating the 49ers on a Monday Night game, overcoming a 17-0 deficit and were looking to sweep Washington.

The game also featured the 2 best defensive players of 1986, LT vs. Dexter Manley. LT would be matched up with Joe Jacoby and Manley vs. now renown car salesman Brad Benson. It would end up being a one sided match up, just like the game as the Redskins would turn the ball over 7 times (6 Jay Schroeder picks) in a 24-14 win for the Giants that would end up giving them the path for homefield and their eventual first Super Bowl.

I'm planning on getting another review in for the bye week, and have already started working on the 1993 Giants @ Dolphins game.

enjoy!

My late father was so excited, he felt that finally, they were really going to win it all, so he went out and bought a brand new, state of the art SONY TV to have for that game and the playoff run.
Great

It was one of the biggest wins imo in Giants franchise history. Or, am I not getting your sarcasm? lol
Matt as I've said before

thanks so much for doing this these reviews are so awesome..

What a game that was..the defense was just so physically dominating that season..the '86 team was truly the best team in the NFL..

And the 2nd best team was probably the Redskins..
thanks for doing this Matt

This is truly awesome and great to watch after all these years. I wish the Giants had their shot at playing the Bears in the NFC Title Game that season. The Giants would have killed them at Giants Stadium, and were still smarting from the loss to them in the Divisional Round the previous season.
rewatching it

BBI would have imploded in the game thread. The Giants had about 3 or 4 chances to put the game away early, including Simms underthrowing Bobby Johnson for a TD and on the next play missing a wide open Mark Bavaro (no one was within 15 yards of him).

It was actually 7-7 late in the first half when the Giants converted on a couple of huge 3rd down plays to finally re-take the lead.

Also, though Benson owned Dexter on this day, Parcells actually sat him in the fourth quarter and played William Roberts the rest of the way as the Giants went to the run and Roberts was a better run blocker than Benson. Benson was named NFC Offensive Player of the week and only played a little over 3 quarters.
One of my all time favorite Giants games

I miss RFK.
I remember watching

that game with my brother and commenting that these were the 2 best teams in the NFL let alone the NFC. Makes you realize how good those those Giants SB teams were back then considering the competition within the division.
one of my two or three favorite games of all time

The Redskins were an excellent team and the Giants owned them that year. LT was a man possessed in this one.
As always,

these are worth their weight in gold. Thanks Matt.

Watch the intro Matt posted for the '86 game, then watch the one linked below from a CBS game last year. Same network, vastly superior technological and financial resources.

I simply can't take it seriously when someone tells me the product is as good or better today. I just can't.
