Rolle- living up to his contract?

Pascal4554 : 10/20/2013 8:01 am
When we signed Rolle in 2010 we made him one of the highest paid safeties in the league. I have a hard time criticizing him since he has suited up for every game and has played through injuries. Under normal circumstances I don't even mind his bravado. Who knows maybe his swagger helps the team and they did make him a captain. Of course in the midst of this dreadful season I wish he would stop talking.

I believe Fewell once remarked that the casual fan doesn't realize the impact the loss of Kenny Phillips has on the team because quarterbacks tend to avoid his side of the field. I could be wrong but to my untrained eye quarter backs don't seem to fear Rolle. Then again he has also played out of position most of his time here.

Rolle doesn't seem to create many turnovers unlike Stevie Brown who seemed to be wearing the other teams uniform last year.

I'm curious as to what grades some of regulars who understand the X's and O's and have much more football experience than me give Rolle for his time here. Is he playing like one of the highest paid safeties in the league?

What exactly did the front office see in Rolle to make him one of the highest paid safeties? Did he really play that well out in Arizona?

He is a good player and a leader
DavidinBMNY : 10/20/2013 8:12 am : link
but he's not worth 7mm as a safety who is not a dominant difference making player. That type of money directionally should go to an Ed Reed, Earl Thomas type of player.

Rolle is one of my favorite players on the team for his leadership and toughness but I doubt he is back, at his current salary next year.

What did the front office see?
robbieballs2003 : 10/20/2013 8:20 am : link
CC Brown. That is why Rolle got the money he did. With that said, contracts always increase and it is extremely rare a player that signed a big contract ever sees the end of that contract. Is he worth what he is getting paid right now? Who knows but, like many have said, he is a warrior and has always played through injuries. If this guy has any permanent damage to his body from playing here then, no, it is not enough money.

What other S in the NFL is asked to play slot corner - none. He plays 2 positions for the Giants. How much should he get

averaage safety

way overpaid.
He got overpaid
Sammo284 : 10/20/2013 8:50 am : link
Because we needed a hole filled badly and S was yet another area we have struggled to resource properly and effectively with depth as well.

I doubt Rolle is kept on next year unless it's through a cut and resign. He has done well for the most part here but he is getting on the other side of 30 now.

I'm pretty sure the majority of NFL players suffer permanent injuries. Everybody I know who played college football has lingering injuries. I do appreciate Rolle for his toughness though.

the best and maybe the only good FA signing that Reese made in the past five years. Plays hard every game and is not always injured like the rest. Wish the others did as well.

Am often hard on the guy but he has been a hard worker and does things he is asked to do.

That said, he is often out of position at S, takes bad angles at that position, and hasn't made big plays as he did in Arizona. They overpaid, but of course they had to once they had nothing in the 2009 season and with KP coming off injury.

He is not worth his money considering the amount of holes this team has and if they cut him that's okay with me.
solid player
sexymoves : 10/20/2013 9:10 am : link
Not a great player, takes bad angles. We most definitely overpaid for him.
Rolle and Baas
JohnB : 10/20/2013 9:38 am : link
were brought in to beef up an area of great need. Both players might have been "over paid" but without them, the Giants don't win the Super Bowl because their backups at those positions truly were very very average.

They overpaid and won a SB
jcn56 : 10/20/2013 9:48 am : link
The market was thin at safety and we needed one.

He's performed well, has been a good leader and was instrumental during the 2011 title run. He's constantly been asked to play through injuries and out of position and has done a solid job doing so while managing to stay a leader on the team.

If you're going to overpay, that's what you want to get from it. A good signing, but given the work the team needs it's probably best we recoup some money and move on.
Did you win a championship with him?
Blue Blood : 10/20/2013 10:10 am : link
there you go.. you got what you paid for.. a championship..

Rolle on this team has been asked to play safety, slot corner and at certain times he is pretty much a linebacker in the alignment. Does what he is asked to do.. never complains about it.. plays through injuries and works hard to motivate his team..

What else do you people want him to do ??
I like Rolle,
Pascal4554 : 10/20/2013 10:32 am : link
But he is one of the highest paid players on what has been some poor defenses other than the stretch run in 2011. Not saying it is his fault. Did we win a championship with him? You could say the same about Baas, Snee, Webster, and Tuck. When is the last time he made a big play? The only one I can think of was his interception against the eagles. He has been asked to play different positions but appears to be average at best when playing out of position. I sometimes wonder about this coaching staff love with playing guys out of position.
Hear this all the time....

They also don't win a SB, if Romo doesn't overthrow Austin.....if Cruz doesn't turn a 5 yard pass into a 99 yard td....if Tuck does not turn back the hands of time for 6 games.....if Nicks does not pull down a Hail Mary.....if GB players don't drop all those passes.....If Osi doesn't strip Rodgers....if JW doesn't strip Williams......

That season, was the perfect storm......all those things and MORE, had to happen for us to win the SB....yet whenever a player's performance comes into question, the old "We don't win a SB without him" pops up....It's been used with Diehl, Snee, Tuck, Rolle, Ross, Webster, etc., ad nauseam....

Then there should be no bitchin' about being 0-6 and the possible drought of the next several years, because no matter how badly we drafted and no matter how bad our decisions were on free agency and the way we handled the cap, THE END JUSTIFIED THE MEANS.....we won a SB....
in the right system

Trel would be that safety that said he's pretty damned good in this shit system.

JohnB : 10/20/2013 11:15 am : link
I hear you but center and safety were 2 areas that were VERY weak and without some serious help, the team wouldn't have won the Super Bowl, its that simple.

There are some positions where lesser quality of a player might not have made the difference between winning and losing but Rolle and Baas were head and shoulders above their replacements. I still content that without Baas, this team doesn't win that 2nd Super Bowl, thus it was a very good signing.
No he isnt living up to it
Rob_MTL : 10/20/2013 11:37 am : link
Giants paid for a playmaker, Giants got burned.

When the Giants signed Rolle I'll admit I was happy about it. Rolle was Arizonas best defensive player. The problem was that he was grossly over-hyped. The cardinals defense was bad with or without him.

As a NYG Rolle is an average safety making top dollar. He doesn’t cover well. Does anyone remember the last time he deflected a pass? Or how about contesting a pass? Whether it's a receiver or a TE, his man is often times wide open. He's slow to support the run. His tackling skills are poor, he goes for the kill shot and misses regularly.

If he was making 1.5M per year, as a veteran backup. I would be fine with it. That's what he is. As for his leadership qualities, 8 out of his 9 years in the league have been on non-competitive defenses.

Its always a gamble bringing in other team FA's.
Rolle had a great rep
mrvax : 10/20/2013 12:01 pm : link
coming out of Arizona. There were few decent S and C free agents out there at the time. At least Rolle and maybe even Baas would have received similar contracts from another team anyway.

Rolle gives 100%. He got paid at the going rate. Can't complain about him.
Rolle the person and leader > Rolle the player
PSIMMS 22-25-268 : 10/20/2013 12:11 pm : link
He is awful in pass coverage.
way overpaid
GiantsFan84 : 10/20/2013 12:38 pm : link
yes he plays hard and isn't often injured and has a good attitude. but that's not worth 7M a year. he's simply not an impact player on the field.
in many ways
Sneakers O'toole : 10/20/2013 12:40 pm : link
Rolle's versatility has been the glue that has gotten this team through some tough things. He's been a good Giant. I don't know what they're going to do with that contract. I'm not in those meetings. I think there is a case to be made that they may choose to eat it and let him play it out.

There is going to be a lot of players moving on, and there is going to be more cap space next year. People see a big number and freak out but it's important to remember, salary is a means to an end. If they are cutting him, it's to make space for a reason, a plan. I don't know what their plans are in free agency next year. I would expect them to be active.

Either way, it will be interesting. We might see them attempt to bolster the O-Line through free agency.

Rob_MTL : 10/20/2013 1:15 pm : link
The bottom line is Giants are paying Ed Reed/Polamalu money. Can anyone claim that Rolle is in that category? It's not even close. Signing him in was a mistake. Keeping him this long is a BIGGER mistake.

The plan has to be to cut him. Give that money to Nicks or Lindival. Finding a replacement for Rolle is going to be easy.

Rob_MTL : 10/20/2013 1:22 pm : link
His versatility? Big deal, so what if he can play nickel poorly. Are bad nickel corners that difficult to find?
And maybe they will
Sneakers O'toole : 10/20/2013 2:48 pm : link
but it's not the given people are making it out to be.
You could make the same Perfect Storm argument
Reese's Pieces : 10/20/2013 3:08 pm : link
for the 2007 and 1990 Giants. You could come up with about as many of the same type of plays that went against the Giants. Reject the idea that the 2011 Championship was a lucky fluke. On the road they beat San Francisco, Green Bay and New England twice. Three of their seven regular season losses were San Francisco and New Orleans on the road, and Green Bay by three points at home.
Probably a little over paid, but how many FA aren't?
steve in ky : 10/20/2013 3:43 pm : link
However if every free agent the Giants has signed preformed as well they wouldn't be 0-6
BBI mindset
Blue Blood : 10/20/2013 4:55 pm : link
everyone should be paid league minimum and only Hall of Fam
ers should get top level contracts
He's been a good team player
Bill in UT : 10/20/2013 5:21 pm : link
but I think his performance is just ordinary. I was thinking they might keep him, but not start him- give the playing time to Brown, Hill, Mundy and Cooper. But I see he's a $7.2M cap hit, so I think they need to cut him. Plus they probably won't keep 5 safeties. They probably won't even replace him since they've got 4 guys. Looks like Mundy's on a 1 year deal- so they may still need a safety if he goes, but not at $7M

when rolle played with arizona wasn't the other safety adrian wilson??? who was always a pro bowl player
He has lived up to contract

He is a team leader and plays well as a safety. Remember the Giants corners have been so injured the last few years that they have had him covering wideouts half the time instead of blitzing or playing zone.

I wasn't thrilled when they signed him but he has been the one constant in the backfield for the last few seasons.
