When we signed Rolle in 2010 we made him one of the highest paid safeties in the league. I have a hard time criticizing him since he has suited up for every game and has played through injuries. Under normal circumstances I don't even mind his bravado. Who knows maybe his swagger helps the team and they did make him a captain. Of course in the midst of this dreadful season I wish he would stop talking.
I believe Fewell once remarked that the casual fan doesn't realize the impact the loss of Kenny Phillips has on the team because quarterbacks tend to avoid his side of the field. I could be wrong but to my untrained eye quarter backs don't seem to fear Rolle. Then again he has also played out of position most of his time here.
Rolle doesn't seem to create many turnovers unlike Stevie Brown who seemed to be wearing the other teams uniform last year.
I'm curious as to what grades some of regulars who understand the X's and O's and have much more football experience than me give Rolle for his time here. Is he playing like one of the highest paid safeties in the league?
What exactly did the front office see in Rolle to make him one of the highest paid safeties? Did he really play that well out in Arizona?
Rolle is one of my favorite players on the team for his leadership and toughness but I doubt he is back, at his current salary next year.
I doubt Rolle is kept on next year unless it's through a cut and resign. He has done well for the most part here but he is getting on the other side of 30 now.
That said, he is often out of position at S, takes bad angles at that position, and hasn't made big plays as he did in Arizona. They overpaid, but of course they had to once they had nothing in the 2009 season and with KP coming off injury.
He is not worth his money considering the amount of holes this team has and if they cut him that's okay with me.
He's performed well, has been a good leader and was instrumental during the 2011 title run. He's constantly been asked to play through injuries and out of position and has done a solid job doing so while managing to stay a leader on the team.
If you're going to overpay, that's what you want to get from it. A good signing, but given the work the team needs it's probably best we recoup some money and move on.
Rolle on this team has been asked to play safety, slot corner and at certain times he is pretty much a linebacker in the alignment. Does what he is asked to do.. never complains about it.. plays through injuries and works hard to motivate his team..
What else do you people want him to do ??

were brought in to beef up an area of great need. Both players might have been "over paid" but without them, the Giants don't win the Super Bowl because their backups at those positions truly were very very average.
They also don't win a SB, if Romo doesn't overthrow Austin.....if Cruz doesn't turn a 5 yard pass into a 99 yard td....if Tuck does not turn back the hands of time for 6 games.....if Nicks does not pull down a Hail Mary.....if GB players don't drop all those passes.....If Osi doesn't strip Rodgers....if JW doesn't strip Williams......
That season, was the perfect storm......all those things and MORE, had to happen for us to win the SB....yet whenever a player's performance comes into question, the old "We don't win a SB without him" pops up....It's been used with Diehl, Snee, Tuck, Rolle, Ross, Webster, etc., ad nauseam....
Then there should be no bitchin' about being 0-6 and the possible drought of the next several years, because no matter how badly we drafted and no matter how bad our decisions were on free agency and the way we handled the cap, THE END JUSTIFIED THE MEANS.....we won a SB....
There are some positions where lesser quality of a player might not have made the difference between winning and losing but Rolle and Baas were head and shoulders above their replacements. I still content that without Baas, this team doesn't win that 2nd Super Bowl, thus it was a very good signing.
When the Giants signed Rolle I'll admit I was happy about it. Rolle was Arizonas best defensive player. The problem was that he was grossly over-hyped. The cardinals defense was bad with or without him.
As a NYG Rolle is an average safety making top dollar. He doesn’t cover well. Does anyone remember the last time he deflected a pass? Or how about contesting a pass? Whether it's a receiver or a TE, his man is often times wide open. He's slow to support the run. His tackling skills are poor, he goes for the kill shot and misses regularly.
If he was making 1.5M per year, as a veteran backup. I would be fine with it. That's what he is. As for his leadership qualities, 8 out of his 9 years in the league have been on non-competitive defenses.
Its always a gamble bringing in other team FA's.
Rolle gives 100%. He got paid at the going rate. Can't complain about him.
There is going to be a lot of players moving on, and there is going to be more cap space next year. People see a big number and freak out but it's important to remember, salary is a means to an end. If they are cutting him, it's to make space for a reason, a plan. I don't know what their plans are in free agency next year. I would expect them to be active.
Either way, it will be interesting. We might see them attempt to bolster the O-Line through free agency.
The plan has to be to cut him. Give that money to Nicks or Lindival. Finding a replacement for Rolle is going to be easy.
ers should get top level contracts
/agree
I wasn't thrilled when they signed him but he has been the one constant in the backfield for the last few seasons.
