Reconstruction of offensive line is underway

Simms11 : 10/24/2013 9:22 am
I disagree with Dave Hutchinson's assessment of this situation. I certainly don't see Cordle as the future starting center on the line. I know he's doing the job now by default, but unless he shows better technique and strength over this year, he can't be seen as the answer IMO. He may be given an opportunity to compete against someone else in camp, but can't see him winning that job.

Additionally, I don't think Boothe has done that well at Guard. I don't think he has been a major concern, but I still think he is better suited as a reserve. Perhaps the Giants would consider bringing him back to compete with Cordle at Center next year.

In my mind, the whole interior line needs to be blown up and replaced with snot-knockers and linemen that are strong enough and athletic enough to get our running game going.

What say you?

Excellent point. The Moss reference is the epitome of "a stopped watch is right twice a day".

Can we move on?
as amusing as all of this is.....
Greg from LI : 10/24/2013 1:30 pm : link
Things are very simple here. a)The OL has been horrible this year. b)While we're not all experts on the minutiae of line play, we can in fact easily see whether or not the line is opening holes for RBs and keeping QBs upright. c)Blitzing up the middle, as Gruden demonstrated during the game, has been a major problem for the Giants this season over the course of several weeks. d)The OL played well and the offense moved the ball well in the first quarter with Baas. The offense ground to a halt as soon as Cordle trotted onto the field.

As I said, you can appeal to authority all you want, but outside of coachspeak, there is no way on earth that Jim Cordle can be considered "outstanding".

Cordle a break,,,,he's had limited playing time. He's had some tough moments but young guys usually do.He's done a good job with the line calls. The A gap stuff is on the guards too...both veteran players.

Think about this. Tim Carter. TIM CARTER! He said Tim Carter does an outstanding job. Not made outstanding plays, but does an outstanding job. If I were you, I'd just admit that I am wrong and start trying to learn a little bit more about Coughlin as opposed to just turning your brain off and agreeing with everything he says or does. He's a great coach and a first class person, but he isn't infallible, and also has ulterior reasons for saying stuff (like saying Cordle is doing an outstanding job, which is hilarious).
Even David Carr!

One thing I did not realize so much, no matter what the context, Tom Coughlin sure does love the word "outstanding". It seems to be his go-to word about anything.

You call having Beatty and Pugh starting the start of it, then OK, but they are the only two guys that have a future or a chance of a future for the Giants on the OLine, and I agree that Boothe has not been very good at all. Cordle stinks, and Diehl we have beat to death, so I am not going there either. Giants need to add plenty to this Oline, they need 2 starting guards and a starting center, unless they move Pugh inside, then they need a guard, center, and tackle. Boothe, Brewer, Mosley and Cordle can have roles as backups next season, but this team needs 3 starters. If they add at least two, I can live with that, and plug in a backup to live with another year, like they are doing with bothe, although Boothe may need to be replaced next season, even as a backup, he has fallen off badly this season.
The worst of all

Boothe has had a decent grade from PFF
jeff57 : 10/24/2013 2:17 pm : link
But he needs better people around him, or else move him to center.

The best solution for them is to draft Matthews and move Pugh to LG.

If you read the quote carefully,
gersh : 10/25/2013 8:14 am : link
he's not saying Cordle is an "outstanding" Center. He's not even saying Cordle is a good Center. He's only saying he's smart, prepared and has a good attitude.

Quote:
Q: Could you talk about Jim Cordle and how he has played?

A: He’s done an outstanding job. Originally he started to play, then Baas came back, then he had to go in for him during the course of the game, as well. He’s very smart. He keeps up with everything. He’s prepared to go. He has a nice demeanor about him, in terms of going into the game at whatever point. We would hope that would continue.

Coughlin is merely trying to be encouraging to a kid he would rather wasn't playing

Interesting analysis by Joey on Cordle from the other night, however, fwiw..

Quote:
...C Jim Cordle again acquitted himself pretty well and seems to be settling in a bit at the pivot. Most of the inside pressure was honestly from guards Kevin Boothe and David Diehl simply not getting their hands on their Viking counterparts quickly enough. Cordle more than held his own inside against massive DT Kevin Williams...
