and Clowney was off the board, and I wanted to draft an OT... (admittedly a lot of "ifs")... I'd be looking to get one of those teams that wants a QB to swap first-round picks. Hopefully somebody would rate one above the other enough to move up to get him. With luck I could still get my OT but grab an extra pick later in the draft.
at a position of constant need like OLB and pass rusher. Haven't followed CFB this year but I have no problem with taking Barr in theory. supposed this draft is very deep on the OL, we can get one in the 2nd...
I really don't see how guys who have bitched and moaned about the giants failure to draft a stud LB in 30 years would advocate trading down.
but if we miss on clowney...and if it is true that those behind us need QB's....I would move down single spots.....and shore up the OL, LB, TE and Corner/safety.
DE get crazy contracts in FA. I know we will have money in the off-season but I truly doubt we sign a big time DE. It will kill any flexibility we have with the cap. I can pretty much guantee that will not happen. They will try to retain Joseph. I can see them franchising Nicks. I can see them addressing the OL in FA. You have to let the draft come to you. You can't go into the draft saying you are taking a certain position in round 1, another position in round 2, etc.

If we ever had a LB worth a crap, he'd get a 'crazy' FA contract too.
If we are in that situation I would rather trade down with a team wanting a QB to take help at OL or CB. I just do not think Barr will work in our system plus I think if a team takes him Top 5 they are going to be disappointed with his production because he can do only one thing: rush the passer. In the NFL guys like Barr can be schemed against because of his lack of feel in coverage. Start running some hot reads to his side when he comes as a blitzer and you will neutralize him
If @ NYG pick BOTH Matthews and Lewan are available and someone is jumping up 2 Picks to take a QB and will add in a nice amount to move up trade back. BIG if.
Right now with the 0-6 start, the only teams I think are clearly worse then NYG are Tampa and Jacksonville. Tampa could get a boost though if they fire Schiano in next few weeks that pump up the roster to eek out a few wins.
Oakland and Minnesota we are right there with right now.
the main source of problems this year and the solution clearly not embodied in any player currently on the roster - not taking Matthews when the chance is there would be very stupid.
Take a DE when we have JPP and Moore and are rushing for 70 yards per game.
and you don't get the chance to draft a franchise QB every day. What we do with both him and Eli will play out another day. But neither Matthews nor Lewan are Orlando Pace, and no team would trade a chance for a franchise QB for a shot at even a franchise LT.
RE: I'd pick Matthews, I just see OL and LB as much bigger priorities
This is absolutely correct, however, it's our interior o-line that needs attention. There aren't any guards or centers with Top 10 ability. We can get starters in round 2 or 3.
You go out in FA and make some smart signings...a C and an OG or RT

I agree with you Mike. Besides, the Giants run a 4-3. Cap-wise it makes sense for them to draft a player who plays DE if they're in that position since he's more expensive and will be gotten in this scenario at a low cap price. If no QB, or no Clowney is available (no other DE is viewed as a 1st round pick), then you go OT. I'd do exactly what yo said: see who wants to come up to 3 and then draft one of the three "blue goose" OTs: Matthews (who can play LT or RT), Lewan (OLT), or Kouandjio (dude can play LT or RT).
P.S. I think Derek Carr will wind up being the 3rd ranked QB in this draft behind Teddy and Mariota after all is said and done.
But there is ZERO chance we take a QB. Eli is going nowhere for another 5 years and Nassib will be the backup until then unless he gets traded. Mariota will be a successful NFL QB, but it would be in our best interest to trade down at that point and stock picks before taking a QB who will not make an immediate impact on our team with so many holes.

I'm not sure of that. Reese is a guy who has said many times that he'd like to develop a QB for the future, and I think that he might jump at a chance to land one so highly rated. Solve the OL problems in FA, have a solid draft, and we're back in contention AND have a future franchise QB.
into coverage and I believe many see as acceptable in a 4-3 or 3-4. But, if the first 2 picks go as in this mock there would many teams trying to deal for Mariota. I think he goes # 1 but this mock would be ideal for a best case scenario trade down. Cincy,Houston,Eagles, Browns would offer plenty for Mariota.
Flying up draft boards because of his great athleticism but lack of football instincts. Jordan still can't seem too earn any playing time, even though the Dolphins moved up too pick him 3rd overall.
The problem is the interior of the line. Looks like there are a number of good OT & QB prospects up high. If the Giants have a very high pick, I'd like to see them trade down to get more picks and grab Haha. They can stick Dix into one of the many holes in defensive backfield, and address their OL needs in later rounds.
Instincts can have something to do with him only playing the position for 1.5 years. Watch him play, he moves well in space and explodes when he gets to the ball carrier. Does not slow down even if he is out of the olay. With the right coaching he could be a Von Miller type. I think he can play the 4-3 as well as the 3-4 but I will leave that judgement to the experts
because it protects the franchise QB. If the OL isn't working, nothing else matters. And right now it isn't working, so fixing it has to be the top priority.
That said, they need a combination of veteran FA acquisitions and quality draft choices to rebuild it, probably a couple of each. And they can't wait to the third day of the draft, either. That's exactly what got them into this trouble in the first place.
Want to rely on the draft to tix the OL woes. Hopefully they address it in FA so we don't have to force any picks at the position and hope he is ready to play
Lots of potential but he's going to need time and despite our record we're not a rebuilding team. Easier said than done but if we're in this situation I pray we trade down.
Right now there are at least 3 QB's going in the top 10: Bridgewater, Mariota and Hundley if the latter two both declare. The first team I'm looking at are the Browns. I don't think they're going to finish as a top 10 drafting team, they're definitely in need of a QB and they have 7 picks in the first 4 rounds including 2 1st rounders. Another team to consider are the Rams who may be looking at a QB considering Bradford's injury history. They also have 2 1st rounders. With needs throughout both offense and defense this would be a great way to get back on top with blue chip youth. There are about 5-7 OLineman that would be in the first round and even if we don't get one of those I'd rather have a Khalil Mack or CJ Mosley, two LBs that fit are D better, won't be as high as a pick and are more NFL ready. All hypothetical with the draft 6 months away but still--trade down if we're picking that high.
are both redshirt Sophomores, so they're eligible. I don't know who was playing for A&M 2 years ago, but I can't believe these guys couldn't start as freshmen

You could say the same about Jordan, who played TE his first year in college. Like I said I see allot of similarities between the two, The explosion and athleticism. People saying they could play in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense.
Right now Jordan is struggling too get playing time in the Dolphins 4-3 defense. This doesn't mean Barr's nfl career is going too start the same way. It just makes me wary of picking these athletic 3-4 OLB with lack of great instincts, Then forcing them too play in a 4-3 defense.
Especially when we are talking about picking top 5 in the draft.
If we are that high personally I'd like to see us trade down slightly and get either one of the OTs or CJ Mosley

Sign a big time DE as a FA
If we ever had a LB worth a crap, he'd get a 'crazy' FA contract too.
Higher then 2 take Matthews then Lewan.

Should be a top 5 pick at this rate.
But at 3 will Clowney gone, it has to be Matthews or trade down.

I wouldn't mind if this team went OL for first two rounds. Certainly round # 1 - in R2 a lb or cb would help.
But, rb is also a consideration
