Orr Star-Ledger: Why Spencer Paysinger stayed on sidelines

Defenderdawg : 10/28/2013 4:17 pm
Unusual take...

"But another part, according to Paysinger, was because he asked to. The original plan was to have Paysinger swap with Jacquian Williams every few series."

"After the third or fourth series, I realized that the defense was playing well, they're flying around, being energetic, and I didn't want to interrupt him," Paysinger said. "And Jacquian is on all four special teams and I'm on one. So I said 'Hey, you worry about the defense, I'll take the special teams.'"

about that
I feel great about it

Keep up the good work Paysinger. Stay off the firsts.
that was very thoughtful
Les in TO : 10/28/2013 4:20 pm : link
and unselfish of him, but at the same time, i like my linebackers foaming at the mouth, aggressive and wanting to raise a little hell.

Give him benefit of the doubt. IMO he certainly deserves it
Rivers on the other hand is awful
Dez Bryant does not like

Thanks for posting.
what's the issue?
GIANTSr01 : 10/28/2013 4:21 pm : link
Team success >> individual performance. Isn't that what fans want from ALL players?

If that was in fact part of why Paysinger stayed on the sideline, I imagine that if JW got winded or the D started struggling he would've gone out there.
I'd imagine that that call is made by Fe well, not the players
Go Terps : 10/28/2013 4:24 pm : link
.
Part
NJGiantFan84 : 10/28/2013 4:25 pm : link
of me thinks "That's awesome! Put the team first." Another part of me thinks "How the f*ck do you not want to be out there? How the f*ck can you possibly think you would hurt the team by being out there."

I'm not sure which part is right.

wigs in nyc : 10/28/2013 4:26 pm : link
sure, the call.

But it isn't out of the realm of possibility for a player to say "Coach, don't get me reps just to get me reps, I'm cool, and we look great out there."

A don't upset the apple cart on account of me typa thing.

Too pie in the sky?
what kind of stupid ass plan is that
GiantsFan84 : 10/28/2013 4:27 pm : link
to have the LBs rotate every series? put the better player in. if it's situational bring in Williams on the passing downs and paysinger on the run downs. but to rotate for the sake of rotating is stupid.
So Players decide who plays now?
ZogZerg : 10/28/2013 4:27 pm : link
Wow.
Don't see the issue
BillT : 10/28/2013 4:29 pm : link
He took Williams' ST assignments and let Williams stay on the field with the D. That's the kind of thing that makes good teams and teammates.
I hope the coach made the decision.
RDJR : 10/28/2013 4:33 pm : link
We're not letting players determine playing time now are we? Let's see if TC is asked about this.
Maybe Fewell wanted to use a rotation to keep the players
giantsfour : 10/28/2013 4:33 pm : link
fresh since Philly plays up tempo. However, since Philly had very few plays in the first half of the game, the rotation was no longer needed.
I'm with Terps on this.
vibe4giants : 10/28/2013 4:36 pm : link
I kinda hope players aren't making these decisions. As nice as a story as this would be.

That makes sense.

Would a player pull a reporter's leg?

AcidTest : 10/28/2013 4:52 pm : link
dont have a problem with it. Seems very unselfish. To conclude that he didn't want to play defense because of this decision is just wrong IMO. He saw a teammate doing really well, and decided to support him by taking over his ST duties.
I don't see the problem?
Geeman : 10/28/2013 4:54 pm : link
Paysinger is a team guy and apparently saw the bigger picture. Williams was playing well and was into a flow, that showed leadership on his part to make the suggestion.

Team player. Don't worry about your slice of the pie, just worry about growing the pie. Everyone's slice gets bigger that way.

Unselfish, honest. Winner in my book (and I know, my book doesn't count!).
Do you guys think that if Fewell wanted Paysinger out there
jcn56 : 10/28/2013 5:53 pm : link
he'd let that statement change his mind? This isn't a chain of command issue, this is a guy saying that he's OK with taking a seat to another player having a good game.

If Fewell wanted him out there regardless, it's as simple as 'thanks for the offer but get on the field'.
Thats not
TMS : 10/28/2013 5:56 pm : link
Paysiger's decision is it?
It's actually a pretty simple solution....
Emlen'sGremlins : 10/28/2013 5:56 pm : link
....finally acquire LBs with talent and scrubs like Paysinger won't ever see the field.
Yeah this is a weird one.
Mike in Long Beach : 10/28/2013 6:29 pm : link
I think it goes without saying we all like the intent behind these comments/decisions. But it's so out-of-the-norm for a competitor to say that it makes you raise an eyebrow.

This is how football players and all athletes SHOULD be, but it's almost impossible to be that way when you've competed at such a high level and have so much on the line. It's weird. I like it... I think.

Obviously this makes logical sense and was probably the actual case.. but as always, you have people who'd rather write their own narratives and believe all kinds of strange stuff. Now we think the players are making the call as far as who plays and who doesn't. I think I've seen it all.
Players
Pat from Inside Football : 10/28/2013 6:33 pm : link
Can make suggestions and the coaches can and do overrule them. In this case, Williams was playing well, so why fix what wasn't broken?
???
dcgiantsfan : 10/28/2013 7:11 pm : link
Those of you questioning Paysinger would at the same time be irate if he were in and been a dropoff from JW!
Reading the comments
sjh50 : 10/29/2013 12:57 am : link
He never said he didn't want to play defense and never mentioned speaking with Fewell or linebackers coach.

He mentioned speaking with two special teams coaches to take over JW's normal role; if I'm jumping to conclusions it was because he was seeing JWs playing time. My take would be he was being a team player and taking over ST role of JW, and not that he asked to not be put in on d.
People complaining about it, as if Pays was making the decision
BlueLou : 10/29/2013 5:06 am : link
himself, are really really unbelievable. What Pays offered/suggested to the coaches was great stuff, just what you want from a team player. STs is in some ways the harder, dirtier work... well except when Josh Brown kicks off I guess.

Complain about it? Twist it into a negative somehow? LOL.
Consider this too: Pays and Jacquain are from the same draft class,
BlueLou : 10/29/2013 5:11 am : link
or at least same rookie class since Pays was a UDFA. Pays has outplayed Jacquain most of this year, and I'm pretty sure received more total snaps. I don't know what level of comradeship they share, but Pays could be giving Jacquain the opportunity to get his game back to a level we haven't seen in 2 years, by getting consistent snaps with the D.

It might be simply an awesome gesture to a friend and team-mate.
Pays is the more cerebral of the two
GmenDynasty : 10/29/2013 5:30 am : link
BUt J will is by far the better athlete. Now that the D is more straight forward it will give the better athletes more opportunity to showcase thier talent on the field.
Williams and Hill played a lot more than Paysinger and Mundy
Ira : 10/29/2013 8:26 am : link
because we were playing the Eagles who use a lot of read option type plays. When playing teams like that, it's important to have a lot of speed on defense.
I just think
JFIB : 10/29/2013 10:55 am : link
Pays is a very selfless player. He wants the team to succeed before he worries about himself. I thought this was displayed well when he gave Beason #52 without asking for any compensation.
For Great White Ghost again here is JJ/GmanDynasty playing
BlueLou : 10/29/2013 8:29 pm : link
his broken record, now can you dig the history which makes this guy an annoying idiot?
