high draft pick. This is getting very old and the reason we are going down the tubes. We better change our draft philosophy and find football players who are sturdy and proven, not just have high measurables..

PaulN : 11/7/2013 11:26 am : link
For Wilson to rest up for next season, let the Giants put him back as a kickoff returner, the job he does do well, not a job we hope he does well at, and address the running back position in the off season, Brown is always hurt, Jacobs is finished and Hillis is a stopgap, we need two running backs this off season, we can count on Cox to play next year, but what he will be ready to give is a huge question mark, maybe a free agent and the draft. i would not be against bringing back Hillis, but no telling what will happen there, he may get an offer we won't match anyway, who knows, but it is time to address this position and the offensive line, we have waited too long with the latter.
Does anyone expect Andre Brown to *stay* healthy?

There are 8 whole games left. (And possibly more.)
I agree with TMS
Headhunter : 11/7/2013 11:28 am : link
we have to start drafting players that come with skills and a 100% guarantee that they will never get injured

A lot of BBI would have given up on Phil Simms by 1984.
And away we go!

I'm allowed to attack the post and not the poster, right?

This is an epically fucking stupid post.

Damn Jerry Reese for not having the injury crystal ball like the other 31 teams in the league!
I think he is talking about our recent drafts in general
ronzo : 11/7/2013 11:41 am : link
Which have sucked to say the least. Not very good at evaluating talent so it seems. Except for JPP, drafts have blown.
.
arcarsenal : 11/7/2013 11:44 am : link
So.. JPP is the only good draft pick we've had over the last 4 drafts?

Wow.
Hopefully Wilson can come back strong in 2014
Jimmy Googs : 11/7/2013 11:46 am : link
and hopefully Giants don't play Cowboys in the first game next season at night.

That combo doesn't seem to work out well for Wilson.

1984 is generous. Most of BBI would have given up by 1982.

I have to admit though, when Phil broke his thumb on the 1st series against Philly in 1983 I really thought he was cursed.
Not shocking
Sammo284 : 11/7/2013 11:56 am : link
Giants will probably just take their chances with Wilson and Brown again next year as they continue reshaping the OL a bit more. RB though will need to be kept on the radar as a need, that's the just the way the NFL works nowadays. RB is a turnstile position anymore and you need to have at minimum two guys capable with a third potentially too and you are probably going to have to call on a vet FA (as we've done half a dozen times the last few yrs).

That said, neither Brown or Wilson have exhibited themselves as long-term considerations or taken a hold of the position. I still have my doubts with Wilson emerging as a serious RB option. Brown, but I do worry about his multiple leg injuries in back to back years.

We will see. My guess is Reese and Co. want to give Wilson a chance to seize the opportunity again for next season.
At least when Wilson

Likely active RBs this week - Jacobs, Brown, Hillis
Jupiter : 11/7/2013 12:04 pm : link
All injury prone. Likely one of them comes up lame in the next couple of games and is lost for the season.

If DW goes to IR, Cox likely inactive each week until first new injury occurs. When that happens, Giants will probably have to add a RB again (at least to PS) as we wait for the second injury to occur.

I think Reese will need to have more urgency than you state above with both Wilson and Brown. Those health issues with both and confidence issues with Wilson cannot be ignored.

Giants need a RB that they can count to carry the rock, pass protect and be there at game time. There should be a new RB from free agency or draft on the team next season to compete for the starting job.
Andre Brown is a free agent after the year
Optimus-NY : 11/7/2013 12:12 pm : link
He's too damned injury prone to re-sign. Ben Tate has been mentioned here a few times as an option at RB. I'd be down for signing him if the price is right. Ideally, if Wilson is healthy, I'd like to see him used like the Saints use Sproles.
Agree
Phil from WNY : 11/7/2013 12:20 pm : link
on using Wilson like Sproles. It would add a dangerous dimension to the Giants offense.
so, let's keep a scorecard

David Wilson is NOT a bust: Headhunter, Arcar, Victor and Dane

Anyone else in?

the problem is that
fkap : 11/7/2013 12:26 pm : link
he was still learning the position, and now his learning curve is interrupted. I'm guessing that in year 3, this first round draft pick is still going to be a part time player. Remember, he only got the starting job because Brown was on IR, and then he lost it, albeit temporarily, to a guy who was waived a week later.

There is room to question whether his RB skills were up to snuff for a first round draft pick. Also room to wonder whether this pre-existing condition was one that could have been known about.
bust or not bust, fkap?

The Steelers took Jarvis Jones in the 1st rd this past April with full knowledge of his stenosis, so..
Tate
Sammo284 : 11/7/2013 12:39 pm : link
would be intriguing. But my guess is his price will be very high. I could easily see a team like the Jets in on him or another team that desperately needs some top end talent/playmaking.

We've got a lot of holes/depth wise to fill in addition to adding younger talent in terms of speed on both sides of the ball, but particularly on defense.

But I have to say, Tate is intriguing and would satisfy the latter since he's still own in his mid 20s and while banged up a bit, has not been subjected to excessive miles playing with Foster down in HOU.
No reason to make the move before you have to
GIANTSr01 : 11/7/2013 12:39 pm : link
re: Kuhn - I thought they have 3 weeks from when he starts practicing to make a decision, but that you do not have to return to practice at the 6 week mark?

re: Tate - no thanks. He's going to get a nice contract in the open market. Sign a lesser vet and draft another RB in the mid-rounds to compete with Wilson and Cox.
not saying
fkap : 11/7/2013 12:45 pm : link
it was a bad move (presuming they knew), just responding to someone above who intimated that you couldn't blame Reese for not knowing someone was going to get injured.

Gun to my head, place a bet, as of right now, I'd bet that Wilson will never be a star. we'll get service out of him, but his production won't be what you imagine a first round pick's production should be. Not labeling him a bust or a non bust.
IR him - don't mess with a neck.
PeterS : 11/7/2013 1:00 pm : link
He'll be back next year, hopefully with a healthy or revamped o-line to run behind.
Not a bust unless 2014 becomes a wasted season for him as well.
Jimmy Googs : 11/7/2013 1:01 pm : link
Maybe Wilson would be best suited to be a Brian Mitchell-type guy. Learn to catch punts and be full-time return KR/PR guy for Giants and more of a reserve running back when needed.

A friend of mine who is a big time Virginia Tech alum (and redskin fan) always gives me grief because he never felt Wilson was going to be a solid NFL back to justify the high pick. He said he had talent but wasn't the type of player that you would feature as your #1 back.
add me on to the David Wilson is NOT a bust camp..
Rsspro : 11/7/2013 1:04 pm : link
too soon.. yes injuries suck.. but they happen.. last year with his kick return ability alone.. he made a huge difference.. and toward the latter part of last season showed he could be an NFL running back..

a shame about his condition and how this year seems to be closing for him.. I was optimistic he could come in later in the season and finish like he did last season..

I hope for the best with his condition.. and hope for the best with him getting back out there and playing for our Giants..
Tate
Toth029 : 11/7/2013 1:10 pm : link
Will go to Cleveland.

Browns then use draft picks on QB and WR.
Wilson is a very good talent
kentric : 11/7/2013 1:14 pm : link
Yes, you can blame him for his fumbles, but you can't fault the guy for being injured. I think he has the tools to make substantial contributions to the Giants next year. At this point in time saying he was a bad pick is wrong.

Its not like he was at the top of the first round, he was chosen with the last pick of the first round.
Tate is probably pie in the sky, but it's not out of the question.
Optimus-NY : 11/7/2013 1:18 pm : link
He probably goes to the highest bidder though. The Giants will have room to sign him, but they smartly won't overpay for what they perceive his value to be, especially at a position like RB that has such a high turnover rate and which isn't as costly as it used to be. Cleveland seems like a very logical landing spot for Tate because of all of the cap room they have.
also everyone compares him to Doug Martin..
Rsspro : 11/7/2013 1:26 pm : link
because Martin was drafted right before him..

yes Martin did play great last season as a rookie.. but he's average 3.6 yards per carry this season and has been banged up and is missing a lot of time as well.. he may be shut down for the rest of the season.. and he doesn't seem to have an injury label.. everyone knew Martin was more NFL ready so Martin's early success over Wilson isn't that surprising..

I don't like to compare the 2.. different backs.. but I do think Wilson can still be a great NFL running back.. provided he chooses to keep playing and his condition can be controlled and safe enough for him to get back out there..

great news.. I'm very optimistic he'll make a big impact in 2014 and he'll be a huge part of our running game if not the main starter..
Wilson
AcidTest : 11/7/2013 2:11 pm : link
is not a bust, but he's another reminder that it's generally unwise to use a first round pick on a RB. They take a lot of abuse, even by NFL standards, and are more fungible in a passing league.

Too soon to call him a total bust. But I don't think he will be an every down back. He can be a real weapon as a KO returner and a situational player. I think he is too small, weak and not very bright (see Eric's post about stenosis, repeated citing of DW being unable to master the offense, Ingram's comments of such, etc.)
I left out the fumbling. Sorry.

As long as he comes back healthy
Emil : 11/7/2013 4:01 pm : link
Worst case scenario for the Giants is they have an explosive RB who is not an every down back. It may very well be that Wilson is not an every down back at this point in his career, and if he isn't, the Giants need to find a back to team him with, and go back to using Wilson on Kick Return because he is too explosive to keep on the bench if you are not expecting him to be the #1 RB.
I don't know what Wilson's
Pego61 : 11/7/2013 4:11 pm : link
health is like so I don't know if there is a chance he could come back this year.

But I would love to know why we need Myers, Donnell, Pascoe, and Robinson on this team, but we can't save a spot for Wilson, if he could play again this year.

I do question the roster management of this team sometimes. The Ballard move (regardless of how it worked out) Dan Connor (was there was no one on the team we could cut, considering he is apparently ready to play now). We tend to place players on IR who are in the upper half of our 53 man roster, just to protect the 53rd man (or the 90th man for Ballard), who should be replaceable.

steve in ky : 11/7/2013 4:30 pm : link
The condition he has can lead to a lot of trouble later in life. I ruined my back and neck when I was younger and since we didn't have MRI's back then I wasn't aware of just how serious my problems were until I was much older and the damage was done. The funny thing is that you rebound so much better when you are young that I always just dealt with my "bad back" and had no idea the damage I was continuing to do to myself. Now I am in constant pain every day and severely limited in what things I can do. David Wilson has his entire life ahead of him, I hope he thinks long and hard about the risks before he returns to the field. Quality of life is more important then football.
