Giants offense: Pretty alarming stats

LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/11/2013 3:05 pm
The Giants first offensive drive of the second half.

Week 1: 2 plays, -2 yards, fumble. (0:42)
Week 2: 3 plays, -1 yards, punt. (1:34)
Week 3: 3 plays, 2 yards, interception. (0:45)
Week 4: 3 plays, -1 yards, punt. (1:03)
Week 5: 3 plays, 4 yards, punt. (1:37)
Week 6: 3 plays, -8 yards, punt. (1:55)
Week 7: 3 plays, 2 yards, punt. (1:35)
Week 8: 3 plays, 7 yards, punt. (1:52)
Week 9: Bye
Week 10: 3 play, 1 yards, punt. (0:58)

So, in 9 weeks of football, we've amassed 16 positive yards on our opening drive of the second half. Haven't picked up one first down, had a drive longer than 2 minutes, and had 2 turnovers.

Is this offense making any adjustments during halftime?
They did pretty well week 7.

1 turnover in 9 drives. That's pretty good for these guys.

lol.

I had to double check the stats in Week 7. I thought maybe I made a mistake.
People got to stop with this
BlackLight : 11/11/2013 3:09 pm : link
Yes, the stats are terrible, but we gotta stop acting like there's a straight line connection between this stat line and "half-time adjustments."

There are lots of reasons why a given play might not work, or a series might stall after three plays.

The craziest stat from yesterday's game for me? That we had not blocked a punt for a TD in a regular season game since 1988.
WTF
Giantz : 11/11/2013 3:09 pm : link
Should have won the KC game going away! Why can't the coaches (Gilbride) design olays to play to the strengths or weakness of the offense?
That is is bad as can be. The Giants might be the only team in
dangerousrappingfrog : 11/11/2013 3:09 pm : link
history to do that; that is how terrible that is. I knew our offense was terrible but that is a down right shame.

You mean stop pointing out tendencies that would make our offense look terrible?

I've used 9 weeks of football. That's a pretty big sample size. But okay, let's not point this out.

We're 3-6! Championship.
The reason is simple.
manh george : 11/11/2013 3:16 pm : link
At halftime, our team makes adjustments, the opponent makes adjustments. Then, the other team makes adjustments to our predicted adjustments, and we stay with the original adjustments.

It's kinda like "Homeland," only more convoluted.

Coach Captain Kangaroo may want to consider the quick kick on 3rd down ala Randall the Scandal

One way to fix this is to just...

come out of the locker room at the beginning of the 4th QTR instead.
The Giants
dorgan : 11/11/2013 3:28 pm : link
are 3-6 and you're surprised the stats aren't good?
We're not good in the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter or 4th quarter.

However, we haven't given up a score or had a turnover during halftime.
We'll have to take that positive and build on it.
There is no time for adjustments at halftime

Surprised the stats aren't good? No.
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/11/2013 3:29 pm : link
But surprised they're that bad? Almost if not historically bad? Yes.

Those stats are horrible.

The season isn't over yet. If any team can do it, we can.
Its not really alarming. Its pretty irrelevant if you ask me
Ben in Tampa : 11/11/2013 3:51 pm : link
We have been consistently bad on our first possession of the second half. We lost six games in a row. We won three games in a row. So… who cares?
One thing about Parcells coached teams is
The Natural : 11/11/2013 3:53 pm : link
that they always seemed to score on "O" or stop the other team on "D" opening the second half. Immediately took over the momentum in the game.

The current Giants seem to make zero adjustments.
Who cares?
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/11/2013 3:56 pm : link
Tell the guys who are chanting 10-6 or 9-7 record to finish the season. This is alarmingly bad.

You expect to come out of halftime and get some positive thing going. There's no lower floor that this offense can reach on their opening drive.

Not one first down. None!
The Giants had a historically bad start
vibe4giants : 11/11/2013 4:06 pm : link
and the stats reflect that.

I'll be.
One very specific stat that doesn't correlate to anything
Ben in Tampa : 11/11/2013 4:08 pm : link
shouldn't be alarming. Its been consistent through all 9 games, and they've won some and lost some. It doesn't really mean anything. We know this is not a great football team.
I am really excited about the return of Andre Brown and

HomerJones45 : 11/11/2013 4:15 pm : link
Welcome to the modern NFL. Outside of a couple of teams, guess what, all the teams are flawed, lack practice time for fundamentals, and are dependent on the qb having a hot hand, and the serendipity of turnovers, referee calls and the bounce of the ball.

The giants are 3-6 they just as easily could be 1-8 or 6-3. To try and find some global rhyme or reason to the NFL is an exercise in futility.

Homer,
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/11/2013 4:24 pm : link
I can respect that.

Just was awestruck by the futility of our offense on the opening drive. That's awful numbers. Especially with the talent on our offense.
The offense sucks. The last 3 games
LauderdaleMatty : 11/11/2013 4:26 pm : link
Shouldn't obscure that. The OL is one of he worst in the league. Injuries certainly haven't helped.

I don't care if people want to "point out tendencies" - I care if people make ignorant pronouncements like "We're not making halftime adjustments!" Like any of you would have the slightest clue whether that was the case.

If those stats were for our opening drives of every game, would complain that we hadn't been practicing all week? Of course not. Or maybe you would.

By arguing with me in the first place, you are making that implicit case. You've transferred the argument onto yourself. If you didn't want to do that, you should've stayed out of it, instead of mis-characterizing my position.
Give those three wins back!!!
vince : 11/11/2013 4:46 pm : link
We're not getting any better! If you watched the game we gave the ball to the other team three times!!! did they appreciate it? No . Those dirty bastids gave it back twice!! The nerve. This team is so bad the fans ought to be barred from writing about it!!

I've been watching the Giants for over 55 years. Ergo I'm smarter than most of you and I say ban BBI!!!!!
Actually I've stopped
LawrenceTaylor56 : 11/11/2013 4:47 pm : link
reading your first post after "People got to stop this".

No one is misinterpreting your post. Actually you're doing a pretty good job on mine though.
Obviously we are making half-time adjustments
Josh in MD : 11/11/2013 5:03 pm : link
Without exact data, a little rough arithmetic suggests that in the first half of these games we must be averaging 20 yards per possession or thereabouts. Then we come out after the half and average less than 2 yards per. In other words, we reduce our yardage per possession by a factor of 10. That suggests a dramatic adjustment.
On the bright side, the Giants are trending positively...
Jimmy Googs : 11/11/2013 5:21 pm : link
on this initial second half drive.

I based this on the fact that after losing a combined negative -6 yards in the first six games on the initial second half drive, the Giants have been gained positive yards in each of the last three games and a combined positive +10 yards.

Unfortunately, even with this favorable trend it will take until sometime late in the 2014 season before we will score a touchdown on this initial second half drive.
That's as bad as it feels.
Jerry K : 11/11/2013 6:14 pm : link
I'd like to see a summary of our final drives of the first half. Probably more yardage but more turnovers.
Giants always try to re-establish the run on the first drive
oipolloi : 11/11/2013 6:44 pm : link
And given that they are 30th in the league running the ball, it is not surprising that that strategy leads to three and outs
We should try to be sure,
oldog : 11/12/2013 10:09 am : link
we take the ball first half, and let the opponents start off the second. Might get a pick 6.

Dragon : 11/12/2013 12:31 pm : link
2nd half adjustments are to put those fans on the way to the hospital on life support, those fans already on life support to start the 2nd half have 3% chance to live. This team is so frustrating to watch and route for it's amazing any fans are still alive. Too Damn much talent to play at this level every week with no real improvement. We may have three wins but in truth I can't say that they have one good win yet out of 9 games played.
