NFLN: Giants to finish 7-9 and miss playoffs

Emlen'sGremlins : 11/14/2013 7:57 am
Willie McGinnest and Heath Evans reviewed the remaining schedule last night and here's what they came up with.

Green Bay - W
Dallas - W
@ Washington - W
Seattle - L
@ San Diego - L
@ Detroit - L
Washington - W
7-9 might win the division

i dont think 7-9 is a stretch

Im going with 8-8 and we make the playoffs. Lions are not that great and neither is san diego. I expect to win 1 out of those 2
I think we beat Seattle

Cross country trek, our running game is improving as is the defense. They are probally right about 7-9 though.
Well, the Giants put themselves in a big hole early...
M.S. : 11/14/2013 8:25 am : link
...and the #1 hole digger happened to be our QB:

Sept 8th; @Dallas; 3 Interceptions; Loss
Sept 15th; Denver; 4 Interceptions; Loss
Oct 6th; Philly; 3 Interceptions; Loss
Oct 10th; @ Chi; 3 Interceptions; Loss
Those three projected losses are tough games
George : 11/14/2013 8:26 am : link
Seattle is an excellent team in every way.

San Diego is long road trip - maybe the furthest possible destination for the Giants to travel in the entire NFL.

Detroit's dome represents a serious home field advantage for them.

I can easily see us losing all three, even with a better team taking the field than the one we currently have.

Oh yeah, and that's the other thing: we have no idea exactly how good or bad this team really is, seeing as how our three-game winning streak has come against some of the very worst QBs in North America - and the fourth coming to town on Sunday. Our schedule starts to get a whole lot harder next week, and doesn't let up for the rest of the season.
to me THAT is the
Victor in CT : 11/14/2013 8:26 am : link
all that assures is a mediocre drafting position. The Giants have given us plenty of great seasons in the past 25 years or so. I can deal with a 4-12 and a high draft spot for 1 year to retool. A top 5 pick could reap a huge draft pick windfall from a team desperate for a QB.

How would history have been altered if the 2003 Giants "rallied", to 8-8 or 9-7 and missed the playoffs? Would Fassel have been axed? We certainly wouldn't have Eli to kick around. Sometimes a step back to take 2 forward is a good thing.
No one on our schedule is world class...
MikeN in Ottawa : 11/14/2013 8:27 am : link
including Seattle. They can be beat on the road, here, in the cold in December...that is a very winnable game. We will have a much tougher game with Washington than anyone else.

I agree with them
Optimus-NY : 11/14/2013 8:29 am : link
I think the best they go can go is 9-7, which is also possible. 7-9 seems more likely to me though. It's only a prediction. None of these guys, including any of us, have a crystal ball. Nobody knows. It's all in fun and for the purpose of filling air time.
If this team beats GB, Dallas AND Washington...
arcarsenal : 11/14/2013 8:29 am : link
I don't think they're going to turn around and lose 3 in a row immediately after but we'll see.

I wouldn't have a problem with that.
I think we're past the point of serious changes being made.

The players didn't pack it in at 0-6 so that probably buys us another year of this same team with roster changes.

It doesn't matter what Reese thinks of TC. Anything involving Tom is going to be John Mara's call. I really believe that.

Which is unacceptable to me.
The way they predicted those wins/losses would have the
Jimmy Googs : 11/14/2013 8:41 am : link
Giants at a 6-6 record with 4 games to go, and presumably tied for first place at that time with Philly (maybe). That would be shocking of course based on the start of this season.

But then they predict the Giants "blow it" by losing 3 of the final 4 games.

Tuckrule : 11/14/2013 8:46 am : link
I agree with you about Washington. Always a tough game and griffin and Morris seem to be back to their old ways. Tough games but winnable. I don't look at this schedule thinking any game is a sure loss. We can honestly win them all the way this defense is playing. Still waiting for a Classic Eli game. 3 td and 1 int with 300+ yards( realistic)

Junc - Its difficult to point to any one thing obviously in a season, but I don't disagree with you that was a HUGE play that we missed on. Cost us a win and is a loss against a common opponent.

Hopefully Chicago beats Dallas and Philly for us later in the year.

The notion that we can squeak out four wins in a row against two 3rd string QBs, a backup on the team for 39 minutes, and Terrelle Pryor and it buys this group more time is miserable.
I have the Giants finishing at 7-9 too but
nicky43 : 11/14/2013 9:49 am : link
winning a few different games. I don't think 7 - 9 will be enough to win the division though. BUT... I do think 8 - 8 wins the division and I still think that is possible but it will be very hard.

I think Dallas finishes 7 - 9 too but they would take the division due to divisional win/loss record.

I had the Eagles at 6 - 10 but I also had them losing to Green Bay.

I have the Redskins finishing 6 - 10 as well.

But what the heck do I know? The greatest thing about this game is a bad team can beat a great team on any given day.

Also, this wouldn't amount to "blowing it" after a comeback to 6-6
Kyle : 11/14/2013 9:54 am : link
The schedule in December is simply much harder than the schedule has been during this six game stretch we're in the middle of, where the only team that's not terrible is Dallas, and they're losing starters by the second and we play them at home.

If the team gets to 6-6 and promptly loses 2 of 3 to Seattle and Detroit, that'd be expected, not "blowing it" or "choking" or "collapsing" or w/e.
If Eli would stop

Yes, correct. What is damning though is if it takes 2 seasons to resolve this oline due to the careless negligence by Reese and crew.
Real hard envisioning winning that game in D.C.
M.S. : 11/14/2013 10:22 am : link
That Redskins team has averaged 30 points over their last 4 teams, so they are -- despite out good D -- gonna hang some points on us.

The question is: Will our offense hang some points on them... or just hang themselves?
Not much difference between 7-9 and 9-7
Jupiter : 11/14/2013 10:36 am : link
This team can go either way. Based on what we have seen so far, 7-9 is much more likely than 9-7. However, with slight improvements of offense and specials, 9-7 is possible.

They'd finish between 6-10 and 8-8 in this realistic quasi-prediction...9-7 is the VERY top of their win total that could happen. Going 9-7 means getting hot and upsetting Detroit on the road, or Seattle at Giants Stadium. Could it happen? Sure it could. Will it? That's tough to see happening at this point unless a back-up QB is playing for one of those two teams at that point. This all assumes of course that the Giants stay healthy themselves, and stop making dumb plays to beat themselves, which is asking a lot.
There's not a chance in hell this team beats Seattle.
Riggies : 11/14/2013 1:51 pm : link
I don't care about how far the Seahawks have to travel, I don't even care if Wilson decides to take the week off.

Their defense, with what their strengths are vs what their weaknesses are, is going to eat what the Giants pretend to be an offense alive. It may very well somehow end up worse than the Carolina game.
Gotta root for the rest of the division to continue stinking it up...
Optimus-NY : 11/14/2013 1:53 pm : link
The teams that might have the best shot at upsetting the apple cart here a little bit is the eagles. If they beat the Redskins this week, they're going to have a decent chance to win the division believe it or not, which is nauseating to say, especially with their Defense. NFC Least indeed.

You have a point Kyle.
Against all the well founded pessimism I pose an alternate hypothesis:
BlueLou : 11/16/2013 2:15 am : link
what if the OL is in fact slowly getting better each game as they gel (as a unit) and as individuals with little or no NFL experience starting (Pugh and Cordle) gain that starting experience?

I can't judge the OL myself beyond the obvious that Eli's been under pressure and the running game has largely sucked; I'm often watching the games on crappy streams, since only a few have been broadcast here.

But I'm willing to accept Joey's review info that Cordle has improved each game (backed up by Eric's observations.) Pugh too seems to be improving. Brown is back (at least for now) and is both more experienced in the Giants' system, bigger, stronger, and a better blocker than Wilson. The other backs likely to get PT (Jacobs, if he's ever better, and Hillis) are also better blockers than Wilson. Myers has been an awful fit for this system, vis a vis his lack of blocking, but reports are that he too has (at least slightly) improved. Then add in a largely invisible Hakeem Nicks to this point of the season, and that's just not who or what Hakeem Nicks is; he's more than proven himself at this level. And Randle, still a 2nd year player only in this complicated O, but getting more and more experience in the system, not to mention him learning what Eli expects and Eli learning RR's body language...

It's a stretch, but it's not out of the question for this team (particularly this offense) to be in a process of evolving into something better. Heck they can't get worse!

And the defense - how can you not like the fact that the defense is currently carrying the offense? Having TT back has been an emotional and intellectual lift, and allowed Rolle to be more Rolle as a true safety. Beason has elevated the linebacking unit; not just by his own play but seemingly as an inspiration to a career stiff like Keith Rivers - or maybe it's just more schematic, and Beason's presence allow Rivers to do what he's best at (whatever that is)?

Getting back to whatever I can notice of the OL play on my lousy stream vs Oakland. I saw pressure coming because Oakland's blitzers went free altogether - not so much guys getting beat by being outplayed. Eli, the OL, communication and cohesiveness in play are all bound to, or at least likely to, or at minimum might possibly, get better.

In which case I don't see the Lions or San Diego running roughshod over the Giants, and think there's an outside chance of getting to 9-7 and taking the division.

Unlikely, but possible.

Re the "back up" QB thing you mentioned; our D playing at its best can defeat teams let by Phillip Rivers and Matt Stafford my friend. It's more the dumb mistakes and horrid STs performances that will do us in in either of those games than the brilliance of Stafford or Rivers, IMO.
The whole "we can't beat Seattle" stuff is silly.
arcarsenal : 11/16/2013 3:14 am : link
I wouldn't bet on us in that game but it's absolutely not impossible. Mike James ran wild on them IN Seattle and the Bucs had a legitimate shot at beating them... they just couldn't seal the deal. If we had to go to Seattle I'd say there was as close to no chance as you can get but with them coming here who the hell knows. And we don't know what the state of the Giants will be at that point. They could be right in the middle of everything or completely out of it. Too much can change between now and then.
We need to stay healthy and catch some breaks
SGMen : 11/16/2013 4:18 am : link
That is my prayer along with Eli getting "hot" with Nicks and our group of TE's who are improving.

The key to a late run (thinking 2007) is for the youth to step up and surprise and to get healthy. Who is to say what will be in Seattle? One play can change an entire team.

I remember the Jets in 1986 - it looked like a possible NY super bowl but injuries killed the Jets. Maybe Seattle and others get hit and we don't? We shall see.
