Raanan Star-Ledger: Is Eli missing open receivers?

Defenderdawg : 11/14/2013 4:01 pm
"So how much of the lack of points can be blamed on Manning? Is he blatantly missing wide-open receivers? I decided to take an All-22 look at last week's 24-20 victory over Oakland..."
Link - ( New Window )
he certainly missed cruz

game over. end of game...

"So, the tape didn't show Manning playing horribly or the Giants leaving a ton of big plays on the field. For the most part, when given ample time, Manning took what the defense allowed."
4 bad passes is the difference
giantgiantfan : 11/14/2013 4:20 pm : link
between completing over 60% and just barely over 50%. 4 bad passes is the difference between throwing a touchdown and not throwing a touchdown. 4 bad passes is the difference between a pick 6 and keeping a drive a live.

His bad passes are the difference between the giants having 2 more wins, instead of 2 extra losses.
The pick 6
dep026 : 11/14/2013 4:20 pm : link
and the missed TD to Cruz were the only bad throws he had.

You know not every QB completes every single pass to which guys are open and sometimes miss open WRs too?
Ok

Let's put this Bullshit that it's all Eli's fault the offense sucks to rest!!!
Still I'm an Eli fan
giantgiantfan : 11/14/2013 4:23 pm : link
it just kinda hurts to see him struggle like this and I gotta call it like I see it.

GmenDynasty : 11/14/2013 4:24 pm : link
he threw deep outside and Cruz cut inside? That was yet another example of the sight adjustments the recievers have to make on many of the patterns they run. Eli read the DB and felt he had inside leverage and therefore threw outside.
He missed too many
Joey in VA : 11/14/2013 4:25 pm : link
Two bad throws to Cruz on the edges, one at the 5 yard line, the awful miss to Hillis. Those were 4 plays that he absolutely flat out sucked throwing the ball. It is on him, he is missing too many passes. Raanan can watch the all 22 all day, but you need to see his field level mechanics to see WHY he's missing so many of these. Cruz was wide ass open at the 5 and he fired it way wide for the same reason he missed cruz on Play one of the game when he was again wide open. He also missed cruz deep down the seam badly late in the game. He threw 22 passes and I counted 5 very bad misses, that is not a good number.

no where in my post did I say that. Winning QBs don't do what Eli is doing this year though - that's my point. And it sucks that our guy is playing like that. I still feel he can turn it around, if not this year, then next year.
He is
Joey in VA : 11/14/2013 4:27 pm : link
Our highest paid player, the offense is his, it is ON him to deliver and not miss wide open easy throws. His INT to Porter was just lazy, he wasn't even looking to see where the safety help was that let Porter jump the route. Pryor made the same mistake on TT's INT but Pryor doesn't make $14 a year and have 10 + years on his resume...and he doesn't have near the weapons Eli does.

Eli is playing sub par, you guys can sugar coat it all day, but he is having a horrific year and yes those mistakes are on him.
All to true
Geeman : 11/14/2013 4:40 pm : link
A lot of these TO's in the passing game are on him. He still has 7 games to turn this around. He now has a running game and 3 very good receivers to lean on.
Joey, good point.
Randy in CT : 11/14/2013 4:53 pm : link
And a shitty Oline all year and how that also impacts a shitty running game, WRs sometimes running correct routes and often dropping passes, none of which impacts QB play?

Eli just started sucking after being real good?

C'mon. The offense is a buffet of suck and if everyone else held up their end of the bargain, Eli would be the least of our worries. You know that, cocksucker.
People who blame the Hillis
dep026 : 11/14/2013 5:08 pm : link
throw on Eli really need to learn the game. The ball was thrown before Hillis cut, which is exactly what you are suppose to do.

Is Eli suppose to be psychic and know that a little push would take Hillis off his route? Seriously. I have no problem placing the blame on Eli when he makes a bad throw and decision. But to blame every single incompletion on him is just flat out stupid. He cant predict what a WR is going to do after he throws the ball.
Wrong!

Cruz ran a post route and Eli threw a corner route. Again, this is what you get with this offense. Eli didnt "miss" him. He threw the ball where he thought Cruz was going to be. Cruz ran a different route once the ball was already thrown.

Seriously, we explain this 1,000x a week and yet people here cant understand why there is mix up constantly?

is the telling quote.

Quote:
Oakland played a lot of two-deep safeties, meaning they protected the deep portion of the field with two safeties a majority of the time.

Why did Oakland play a lot of two-deep safeties? Because our OL, especially the interior, is so weak in pass blocking that they thought they could get pressure with just four or five guys. This is what everyone will think and do, which is pretty much going to eliminate any downfield passing game, unless somebody slips. That means we will regularly needed eight, ten, or twelve plays to score, which is very hard to do on a regular basis.

coming out of his break. Very easy to see.
he did plenty
Tuckrule : 11/14/2013 6:38 pm : link
I have nfl rewind and watched the game and was surprised to see that. I was trying to focus on the play of the O line and I noticed that Eli just didnt see them or maybe he felt that they were covered. Also, Brown is amazing and our O line did not change one bit. Cordle in the backfield or on the floor, diehl spinning around in circles etc. Pugh did a hell of a job. Love that pick

calling Eli out remember the wind conditions lats Sunday, Weatherford called it the worst wind he ever kicked in.
What is Ryan's excuse over in Atlanta?
xman : 11/14/2013 7:34 pm : link
Bad OL ,bad running game and injured receivers. Does he have a 68 QB ? That is unbelievable

Oakland's punter didn't have much trouble with the wind, only D Moore.
I think it's pretty obvious Eli hasn't been playing well
jcn56 : 11/15/2013 7:26 am : link
The question is more - has he not been playing well on his own accord, or has the offense around him caused him to play poorly.

The entire unit, save for Victor Cruz, has stunk for the entire season. The OL went to shit early when mediocre OL play went over the cliff after injuries led to subpar replacements. The RB position suffered injuries that led to us starting just about every guy we could get our hands from week to week. The WRs have had problems being out of position and dropping passes, leading to interceptions and mistrust with Eli. There's simply no TE.

When it all goes systemically to shit like that, I don't see how you can properly evaluate them. Not hard to say that Eli has played poorly and has to improve, but hard to say how much of it is him playing better, and how much of it is adapting to what he's got in front of him.

Randee's 4:53 and jcn's 7:26, Bingo..
The whole article was an exercise in futility
Essex : 11/15/2013 8:30 am : link
what is the point of extracting one game to determine if the offense is Eli's fault. If you would do it over the ten games, I might be more receptive. But one game is just pointless. Also, the missing wide open receivers is always an interesting criticism. that is not to say it is not a valid one, it is just saying that a qb cannot always see a wide open guy because the qb is trained on progressions. Maybe his first progression is open as well and he has to take that opportunity. Maybe before he gets there his field of vision is cut off by defensive lineman. So, looking at a video (especially of only one game) and trying to draw conclusions is not my idea of productive or beneficial work. Seems like we got another Zach Berman on our hands. A wannabe football guy posing as a reporter.

Seeing the play live my first thought was 'awful pass by manning'. Thankful for replay so i could correct my way of seeing things!

Any time, any day, online, on the phone, you name it, we can go toe to toe on who knows football. Eli doesn't have to be a mind reader, he has to be familiar with what his receivers do and he missed badly on both throws. THat is on him, no matter how you choose to fantasize about it.
It's amazing the lengths some will go to to defend Eli
chris r : 11/15/2013 3:35 pm : link
This idea that he was previously a flawless QB and so the offenses problems can't possibly be attributed in any part to him is ludicrous. He's as clutch as any QB in the game, but he's not a consistently great QB and hasn't been for his career.
Also can we stop with the idea that a great QB
chris r : 11/15/2013 3:40 pm : link
Is entirely the product of his teammates performance? Rogers has been getting pummeled behind a lousy OL for years and has been elite. Brady has been great with horrible receivers. Both have excelled with lousy run games as did Eli in 2011. Elite QBs transcend their teams talent and make the whole team better. Eli is being paid to be elite - he should be held to that standard, not the 2004 to 2007 Eli lets just be great full he's not horrible standard.
Grateful

Eli is a very good to great QB during the regular season
LG in NYC : 11/15/2013 3:45 pm : link
outside of this year.

And he has been incredibly clutch in 2 post season runs.

For that he will probably be in the HOF.

Whether or not he is "elite" shouldn't even be a debate anymore. He isn't. That word is reserved for the truly special QB's like Peyton, Brady, Rodgers & Brees.

Its painfully obvious you don't understand what option routes are so I would only need a few minutes to show who knows more about the position. Many throws a QB makes are made before a WR comes out of his break. If a WR sees one thing and the QB dees another.... you are going to get back throws. This is explained by coaches, previous QBs, and many knowledgeable posters here. Yet you refuse to acknowledge this.

Go watch the pregame to the Vikings where gruden broke down what many of us are saying. Your tune will change quite quickly.

None of us have said eli has been good this year. But many of can at least differentiate when someone else screws up. Maybe you just need to rewatxh a few more times before posting.
