Who's more important to re-sign, Beason or Nicks?

CT Charlie : 11/14/2013 4:33 pm
And at what price?
Beason and it's not even close right now.
Geeman : 11/14/2013 4:34 pm : link
Love Nicks but Beason is the bigger priority to sign.

Not sure about that - if Beason wants big bucks
jcn56 : 11/14/2013 4:39 pm : link
Is he still a priority?

I like the guy, I liked the trade, but he's been oft injured. I'm pulling for him to stay healthy, but if he wants a huge paycheck this offseason are you paying him?

Which isn't to say I think a huge sum of cash should be dumped on Nicks either, but I'm not sure Beason is a slam dunk if he's looking for megabucks.
Beason
Bill in UT : 11/14/2013 4:42 pm : link
We've got 2 other good receivers, we don't have any LBs. $3-4 plus incentives based on staying healthy for another couple of million.
TELL that
OldPolack : 11/14/2013 4:43 pm : link
to REESE or CHRIS MARA.
Also the Giants need to replace either GILBRIDE or both.
Beason is already on record that he wants to be a Giant for life.
Geeman : 11/14/2013 4:48 pm : link
This is the perfect marriage, the guy is really a throwback football player and as long as he stays healthy, he's too important not to bring back. just look at the effect he's had on all the LBers that did pretty much nothing till he showed up. All of a sudden Rivers has a career game?
Williams plays much better?
The entire defense comes together?
His net effect cannot be understated.
He will not be looking to just "get paid", he wants to stay with this organization for the long haul.
And the Giants don't have to choose
BillT : 11/14/2013 5:02 pm : link
They should have the money to sign Beason, Joseph, a quality FA OL, maybe both Browns and McBride. Nicks is a big question on top of that.
What has Nicks done this year to convince people
ZogZerg : 11/14/2013 5:03 pm : link
he should be retained?

Beason, on the other hand, has completed turned the defense around. Not even a close call.
Beason, of course
PeterS : 11/14/2013 5:18 pm : link
but Nicks is not completely responsible for his subpar season and every effort should be made to keep him in the fold.
Nicks can return

but only at a reasonable contract, which I dont think he will settle for.

Assuming
AcidTest : 11/14/2013 5:28 pm : link
he stays healthy, it's Beason. He'll be a lot cheaper than Nicks. But I will be very sorry to see Nicks leave. He is an extremely talented player, who plays through injuries, and has given his all to this team. I still believe that some of his "drops" are because of his injured fingers. I don't blame him one bit for selling his services to the highest bidder. Every person in any profession has that right.
Nicks
steve in ky : 11/14/2013 5:38 pm : link
I really expected more from him in a contract year and expected him to make it very hard for the Giants to let him walk. His performance, to this point in the season at least has not done that.
Depends on which is easier to replace.

How many good LBs are out there?
I don't know the answers, but I'm sure that is the answer to the problem.
It depends on which of them is easiere to replace.

Not the way Nicks has played this year.....
Doomster : 11/14/2013 5:58 pm : link
He is going to ask to be paid like he played in 2011, not how he played in '12 and '13.....I hope we don't match the highest offer....

As for Beason, I hope we go elsewhere ....he has shown what a linebacker can actually do, and what effect that will have on the rest of the defense.....Sign a guy with no medical baggage to take his place.....otherwise it's another Dan Connor signing....

Beason
Blue Bleeder : 11/14/2013 6:01 pm : link
Had a bad 2011 and 2012. But in 4 seasons from 2007 to 2010 he played all 16 games each of those 4 seasons.

Blue Bleeder : 11/14/2013 6:03 pm : link
Have u watched the guy play lately? I think most would agree that he playing like a pro bowler.
How the heck could you not want Jon Beason back here?
arcarsenal : 11/14/2013 6:04 pm : link
Players of his caliber don't grow on trees and are not easy to find. Saying "let's just look elsewhere" is WAY easier said than done. And if you do that, you have to burn a premium pick on a guy who may not even pan out whereas if you retain Beason, you already have your guy and can worry about the interior of the OL first and LB depth afterwards.
I'm scared they'll let Beason walk.

We have needed a above average MLB since Pierce left. All the haters and know it alls, kept saying LB's aren't important in a passing league. The proof is in the pudding
Reese has shown some ability
Bill in UT : 11/14/2013 6:22 pm : link
to pick receivers, but has done a miserable job of evaluating LBs. I'd rather have him try to select the next Nicks than the next Beason.
Good thread
mattlawson : 11/14/2013 6:31 pm : link
Both pretty important Pieces to the puzzle. Beason is the MLB we've been waiting for. A game changer. A Patrick Willis type of MLB that is the true captain.

Nicks is a great player when 100%, and the giants are Better off with him here -- but not to the extent that the defense has shown in a complete 180 since his signing. Does Eli have to do wth that? Yeah... But I know the goods when I see the goods. beason is the goods and the giants should grow the sink at him to keep him in NY

right now.. it seems to lean toward Beason just because our defense is finally playing well.. and we need that to be a great team..

however.. when Nicks is healthy and at his best.. he can dominate too.. I wannna see Beason keep this up and stay healthy.. and I also wanna see Nicks turn it around and get back to the old Nicks.. then it'll be a tough choice..
Beason is not going to come cheap

dangerousrappingfrog : 11/14/2013 7:17 pm : link
lackluster play (I am a huge Nicks fan btw).

For what its worth we can not break the bank on LJ either. History has shown that in today's NFL you can get DT's on the cheap. I also believe that LJ can be had with a mid level contract. We don't need to pay him 7 million a yr.

The Giants have to quit over paying guys. Sometimes you have to let them test the market. We overpaid Beatty and Bass and can't afford to make those mistakes again.

The Giants do a solid job with the cap but if they were a little smarter with their money, they may have a chance to get a guy the really like in the offseason. Sometimes it can pay off to be ready to pounce, so to speak.

Any list of players you care to share as to who you might want at LB. Young, healthy and cheap do not happen in the NFL in FA
Beason
CapeGman : 11/14/2013 7:40 pm : link
Of course the contracts factor in. Nicks is playing for a contract and what has he done? Play like a third wideout basically. While Beason has seemingly helped the whole defense improve.
I hope Nicks is ready for a pretty cheap offer from the Giants.
Absolutely Beason…….
Simms11 : 11/14/2013 7:40 pm : link
He's now a critical component to this defense and it would be very hard to replace. Nicks on the other hand has been sub-par all year and looks to be a step slower, as well. He coud definitely be replaced with a high draft pick and possibly Randle.
hahah....exactly
Geeman : 11/14/2013 7:49 pm : link
I'm glad Doomster doesn't run this team. He makes it seem like Beason's come a dime a dozen. Do you realize how long it's takent the Giants to find a MLBer fit who has the combo of both ability and leadership?
That is not easy to find and history has proven that. You have a guy that loves it here and is a perfect fit, don't be foolish and allow such an important player to get away. This was basically an audition and he surpassed all expectations. Sign him...period. Not worried though, I'm very sure he gets resigned, his impact is undeniable, just listen to the coaches and players and the buzz around him. he has that "it" factor. This guy was born to be a Giant.

Reb8thVA : 11/14/2013 9:05 pm : link
the OL will be fixed but we will still need 3 WRs to make the offense hum like before.
I would say Nicks if it were the 2011-version
Jimmy Googs : 11/14/2013 9:15 pm : link
but from what I have seen in 2013, I go with Beason.
This isn't a fair comparison.
Reese's Pieces : 11/14/2013 9:20 pm : link
Beason is just a guy who was lucky to be picked up by the Giants and still be drawing a weekly paycheck from his one million dollar 2013 contract. He played in five out of 32 games 2011-2012. He's had a torn achilles AND microfracture surgery on a knee. He was traded for a seventh round pick to a team with the worst linebackers in the NFC.

Something is wrong with management if the Giants have to choose between Beason and Nicks.
So, you guys want to
Doomster : 11/14/2013 9:46 pm : link
continue to overpay players, and risk counting on players with health issues....fine.....oh, We didn't know Wilson had neck problems when we signed him.....It's the same with TT....he has played above expectations this year.....but do we give a guy with 3 ACL's a big contract?

Well, we know Beason has knee problems.....Connor and Rivers has taught us nothing?

The guy has played three games, and is all world? No, he is just a linebacker that can actually play.....has he been outstanding....no, he has played like a linebacker, nothing more.....he has made plays a normal linebacker should make......When you compare him to the likes of Rivers, Herz, Paysinger, etc., is it any wonder he looks all-world? He's good, he's not outstanding....
You have no idea what kind of money he's even going to get.
arcarsenal : 11/14/2013 9:49 pm : link
How do you know we're going to "overpay" for him?

And he's been better than just some average linebacker. He's been excellent. This is a player who was an all-pro before his injuries. He's not just some meh player who only looks good because of the other players at the position. He's starting to look like he did back in 2008/2009 and he was an outstanding player back then.

Since you're so intent on just letting him walk, who do you propose we replace him with?
Who said anything about giving Thomas
Ten Ton Hammer : 11/14/2013 9:57 pm : link

It's all about whose playing well...
Torrag : 11/14/2013 10:02 pm : link
right now it's Beason. For whatever reason...leg injuries, general malaise of our passing attack, whatever...Nicks isn't playing at a high level.

Jeez Doomster...I get your point but Beason has been very good, and dare I say, near outstanding. We are completely deficient at the LB position and have shown no clue how to draft at this position, so don't you think we need to jump when we finally find a guy who knows how to play this position?
Doomster, do you hear what you're saying?
Bill in UT : 11/14/2013 11:18 pm : link
That compared to a bunch of guys who suck Beason looks All-World. If Beason is gone, all we have left is that bunch of guys who suck. Each one handpicked by Reese and Co., btw
What I meant is that other teams are not going line up to throw
Reese's Pieces : 11/14/2013 11:38 pm : link
millions of dollars at this guy. He's far too big an injury risk. We should be able to sign him pretty cheap.
Beason won't come cheap
WillieYoung : 11/15/2013 6:51 am : link
The film doesn't lie and every director of pro scouting has seen how much his presence has improved our defense. His contract will protect the team that signs him against injury (little guaranteed money beyond first two years). I pray it's the Giants who sign him.

That should priority one. Next sign two more offensive linemen and one more CB. At that point you evaluate Beason and Nicks. Beason is a great story and a fierce competitor, but he has suffered some serious injuries--like TT-- and you cannot overpay. Nicks has been off but it is a mistake to judge him by this year when no one other than Cruz has performed well in the offense.
Beason won't get
old man : 11/15/2013 11:16 am : link
10M/yr, and if HN does here,it'll be because the FO and he want him here and worked something out.An FT will cost 11M for a WR. It's likely Beason, even with the savings Optimus project to be available which include $$ to re-sign Nicks.

Why do I have the feeling Nicks walks due to the current OL woes and current O scheme, we fix the OL with players that are the bizarro of the current OL in '14, allowing Eli forever to find open receivers, and wish(and HN wishes) HN had stayed?
I'm very confident
Jerry in DC : 11/15/2013 11:20 am : link
that we'll resign Beason and that he won't be very expensive. Look at his history and his career path - great player, made tons of money, then staring down the end of his career, then resurrected with the Giants. That's the profile of a guy who sticks around. Plus his injuries aren't exactly a secret. Teams aren't going to offer him a ton of money.

This reminds me a lot of when people were really worried that we wouldn't be able to afford Kenny Phillips. Hopefully Beason's body holds up better than KP's though.
Beason, let Nicks walk

the question assumes
M in CT : 11/15/2013 11:27 am : link
(falsely, in my opinion) that we'll have the ability to sign both players. i don't think that will be the case. i think we'll be priced out of signing Nicks due to a) the other holes on the roster that will be more important to fill and b) Nicks' asking price/what the market for Nicks will bear.
I want the team to keep both ...
Beer Man : 11/16/2013 9:12 am : link
Both are tremendous assets to this team and will be needed for another trip to the SB. But if they can only keep one, then I go with Beason. Since becoming a Giant, the D play has improved greatly, but also, the play of all the LBs has increased. He has that rare ability to make the players around him better (even the BBI whipping boy Mark H. has played better). Nicks is a great receiver and IMHO can be a game changer. But with the improved play of Randle, the team could replace him and the drop off would not have the same impact as losing Beason (it would still be a big lose)
