Question on OL play:

Victor in CT : 11/18/2013 8:14 am
I had to listen on the radio yesterday while driving my mom back to L.I. It sounded like the interior OL had a pretty good day. Both Banks and Cross mentioned it a couple of time, and Cross even singled out Cordle once for praise. What did you guys see?
I thought that the OL was better than in the past, but part of
Marty in Albany : 11/18/2013 8:30 am : link
the improvement was having Jacobs and Brown in the backfield who could block and pick up blitzsers better than Cox and Wilson could.
Unless he's hurt,
Big Blue '56 : 11/18/2013 8:33 am : link
playing Jacobs over a superior Hillis was a stupid decision by TC imv
Diehl and Boothe

were god awful again.
how is Hillis superior?
GIANTSr01 : 11/18/2013 8:43 am : link
He's better catching it out of the backfield, but he runs like an OL and is far slower hitting than holes than BJ. Plus BJ has always been good on blitz pickups and even looked good on the handful of short yardage plays he got (2 firsts and a TD I think).

That was my exact question. Hillis is a proven short yardage back. Better pass catcher as well. Not sure of the reason. Would love to hear KG or TC comment on that.
Maybe the Hillis fumble has
Tuckrule : 11/18/2013 8:45 am : link
Something to do with it
Thought Hillis
TMS : 11/18/2013 8:58 am : link
looked better than Jacobs back there. Hillis is still new to the system and will improve as time goes bye. Jacobs is very limited in what he can do in the offense and he will be semi-injured all the time.
I thought the interior of the OL
Essex : 11/18/2013 8:59 am : link
played better until the after Lacy scored the TD. The next series, the packers came right up the middle twice for sacks on 1st and 3rd down (although not sure about the third down that it definitely came from the middle). After that series, I thought the interior of the OL was not as good as it had been prior to that time.
thanks guys.

....
the guy
area junc : 11/18/2013 9:18 am : link
who is really coming on is Pugh. they are starting to take yards when they want them off right tackle
Diehl
nomad1986 : 11/18/2013 9:20 am : link
is the worst starting Guard in the NFL. Boothe was an unrestricted free agent and he didn't get a single contract offer above 1 year minimum if he even got that. Cordle wouldn't make another NFL roster if the Giants cut him.

These are three of the worst OL's in the entire NFL and they start for the Giants.

None of them played well yesterday. None of them will ever play well.
Hillis is not superior to Jacobs.
Ace718 : 11/18/2013 9:21 am : link
Only thing he could do better is catch and even that has been suspect.
situational football
area junc : 11/18/2013 9:22 am : link
this is the best 5-man line combination we have

we are doing very well in GL/SY situations which is a great sign - underrated situational ability
They loked a little better
JFIB : 11/18/2013 9:22 am : link
But they are still struggling especially in the later quarters of the game. I still think we need two new guards and a center next season. I hope Beatey (sp?) is injured or something because his play had dropped of this year.
Agreed

On Pugh. And to my very untrained eye he has looked better than Fisher...

This. I hate to say it, but Cordle was actually less bad than he's been. No world beater to be sure, but Diehl and Boothe are done. I was thinking about maybe bringing Boothe back as a backup center next year, but Cordle might be a less bad option. None however are good, and all should preferably be gone after this season.
Jacobs did his job well yesterday

Cordle's proven to be backup quality lately
GIANTSr01 : 11/18/2013 9:56 am : link
no problem bringing him back for depth next year. Though they need at least 2 interior OL via FA and the draft (preferably within top 3 rds).

It would be really nice if Mosley or Brewer could step up as well.

Agree entirely...can't go into next season thinking that the interior oline is OK, because it's really not that good. It will be hard to get three new linemen in the middle of your offense, but it has to happen IMO. They are just not a good group in the middle. Conner has helped in the run game and it is masking some of the oline flaws too.

my guess is Baas/Cordle battle it out for the
GIANTSr01 : 11/18/2013 10:10 am : link
starting C job with two new guards (one via draft and one via FA).
I want Boothe back at vet min
spike : 11/18/2013 10:13 am : link
to backup both guard and center positions.

Like his versatility.
One thing to keep in mind that folks seem to forget
Cam in MO : 11/18/2013 10:17 am : link
is the impact each position on the O-line has on other positions on the O-line.

It may only take a new RG to make this O-Line look really good again.

Those 5 guys need to be able to work as a unit, trust each other, and be on the same page. They don't look to have any of that yet, although they seem to be getting better each passing week.

Boothe may be struggling because of Cordle. Beatty may be having problems because of Boothe's struggles. Cordle may be struggling hard because of DD. It can be a domino effect. My untrained eye says it all starts with DD being very bad.

Cordle playing well
Phil from WNY : 11/18/2013 10:48 am : link
makes it possible for the Giants to bring back Baas if healthy. I realize this is blasphemous for some but the Giants don't have to pay up for a center nor do they have to suffer the dead money if they believe Baas can do it. Having a proven Cordle makes this possible.

It's all about flexibility. GM's with no flexibility pay up - ala Baas original contract while flexibility allows Reese to be opportunistic.
DD may be overmatched out there
GIANTSr01 : 11/18/2013 10:53 am : link
but his insertion into the lineup has helped significantly with getting the entire OL on the same page seeing as he's responsible for the line calls.

He still has his physical breakdowns, but the mental errors appear to be happening between Boothe/Beatty and Boothe/Cordle.
According to Pat Traina
Ace718 : 11/18/2013 10:54 am : link
Giants seem confident in leaving Pugh one on one but have been sending some help to Beaty.
There were a couple
OlyWAJintsFan : 11/18/2013 11:06 am : link
of plays where the Jints were outschemed with the RB having no chance at the blitzer due to assignment pick ups and length of the drop. Tough to assign a blame on those, assuming each interior lineman got the right call.

When things were man up, both Boothe and Diehl looked horrible in controlling their man. Beatty is curious, he looks good and terrible in the same set of downs. Pugh has been pretty solid.

I don't get the love for Hillis over Jacobs, Jacobs did his job well yesterday and got several yards more than needed in each 4th and 1. That includes being met in the hole on the last one. I'm not sure Hillis would have moved the defender like Jacobs did but I guess the grass is always greener.....
Can Brewer catch the ball?
old man : 11/18/2013 11:07 am : link
In extremely limited play,he looks good running to the second level on the jumbo OL. Big guy's weakness is he needs a little running mo to be an effective blocker. If he can catch the ball, why not as a blocking TE? He's supposed to be athletic, so he could be the tackle eligible/TE,the way the Pats use some of their players, and do no worse than Myers(who did have that 1 nice catch on 3rd to the 3). Especially since Robinson is non-descript at this point. And Donnell is unsure of where the out of bounds in the EZ is.
In the draft, replace the BPA principle
CT Charlie : 11/18/2013 11:09 am : link
with BGA. Best Guard Available.

I'd look for a good FA guard,
MOOPS : 11/18/2013 11:52 am : link
spend a few bucks there, and then spend a 2 or 3 in the draft for a talented guard, not a project.

Agreed. That's quite possible. I don't think it is likely, though.

I didn't rewatch the game yet but generally speaking
Rob_MTL : 11/18/2013 12:27 pm : link
Beatty played well
Boothe played well as usual
Cordle was ok
DD was getting abused (by power and by speed)
Pugh was fine

O-line
blue1986 : 11/18/2013 8:40 pm : link
I don't see where 4 sacks to kill good drives as good line play and dumb penalties at crucial times. We are still letting to much penetration at times for negative yardage on running plays. This is not the line we are used to. Move Boothe to center and bring Brewer to guard for some beef.
How are you guys able to evaluate interior OL play?
baadbill : 11/18/2013 8:58 pm : link
I'm curious ... not sure I would know how well they played even if I had a team's game film, since I don't know much about OL technique ... but how is it anyone on BBI is able to evaluate OL play without having access to a team's game film?
