John Lynch: Giants Should Consider Benching Nicks

Eric from BBI : Admin : 11/23/2013 8:19 am
Quote:

"It's fair to ask whether this is the same Hakeem Nicks that we saw earlier in his career," said John Lynch, a former NFL defensive back and current analyst for Fox Sports. "For whatever reason, he isn't having the same impact."

....

Nevertheless, removing Nicks from the starting lineup is a move the Giants must consider. "There comes a time when, if a guy isn't producing, it's time to sit him down," said Lynch. "In the NFL, what you've done in the past only counts for so much."

Someone should go over Nicks' play by play this year in extreme detail

to see how often his "drops" or even missed targets have been at least partly a result of uncalled PI by the guy(s) defending him.

Eli gets all kinda excuses made for his play when it deteriorates but few seem to cut Nicks the same slack. Why?

Nicks' game is darn physical, so I think it's natural that defenders will get away with more PI on him than on other, less physical, WRs. But to my eyes this year it was often blatant, but uncalled.
I agree

Its pretty clear to me that Nicks is playing not to get hurt. I honestly don't think he wants the ball. He's obviously been a huge disappointment this entire season. I get the argument that he draws the double coverage but I also wonder how true that is at this point in the season.

The other players must also know that Nicks is playing not to get hurt. That can't be good for the team.

So, at this point, whats really to lose by sitting him? Randle isnt a huge drop off from the old Nicks, and he's sometimes a big step up from the current Nicks. I know he's not as good as Nicks when Nicks was great, but Nicks hasn't been great this season. Honestly, I think the Giants really mishandled the Nicks situation.
Can't help to think

What kind of year Hixon could have had this yea for the Giants if he were still here.

I know he's not doing much in Carolina but that's a diff team that doesn't know how to utilize him

I feel like he's due for a breakout game

however, doesn't everyone realize there will be gale force winds tomorrow? How exactly are we going to throw the ball when we barely could against Oakland with the wind at half the speed? I think we're going to have to throw short and run the ball. Unfortunately.

I think John Lynch thought he was referring to was Akiem Hicks of the Saints, not Hakeem Nicks of the Giants.

Lynch is easily confused these days....too many tackles leading with the helmet.
Is this the same

dirty playing John Lynch who should have been benched 3 years prior playing for the Donkeys on name alone?
4 wr set

Should be....
Murphy and Randle...on outside
And 80 and 88 in slot...
Cruz and nicks are possession
Big play after catch guys.. not
Speed guys...randle and murphy
Can go deep...while 80 and 88
Get doubled..throw Murphy a
Couple deep routes...he's on a 1
Year contract and hasnt played
"Benching" in the context of that article and even Lynch's quotes

just means he's demoted to third WR, not he's-never-going-to-play-land, where Murphy and Jernigan are ahead of him.

Randle, even with his on/off issues with mentally grasping the offense, appears to be the better player of the two right now and he's the future for this team. This team won't do it, but a more... let's say cold team absolutely would strongly consider promoting him to "starter" snaps very soon, if not already.

there is more to this than we are being allowed to know..whether its an undisclosed injury, an off the field personal matter, or anxiety over his pending free agency and contract status, or a falling out with eli, there is something else at play here

we'll likely get more insight at the end of the season or during the off season

I think so too.
BULLCRAP - we still do not

10 games into the season and JPP has more TD's than Nicks!! The only reason I wouldnt bench him is because Louis Murphy and Jernigan both are a bust. JR fucked up by not keeping Hixon!!!

Jernigans - 8 catches
Murphy - 1 catch
Hixon - 3 catches

I always though Hixon was a gamer too but it would not have made any difference.
Nicks is a head case
