Nicks...is anyone else as disappointed as I am

MikeN in Ottawa : 12/16/2013 10:15 am
in this guy this season?

Two years ago, I thought Nicks was an absolute beast and would be the best receiver in Giants' history. I would have, at that time, taken Nicks, hands down, over any wide receiver in the NFL. He was that good.

Now, to hear him yesterday refute what TC had to say after the game, to see him literally not compete at all for several balls...a common theme this year for him...I cannot believe I am watching the same guy. And he is only 25.

I know the injury thing but it is hard to watch a guy, who competed so hard previously, just go through the motions and let's be honest...Nicks is just going through the motions right now. To me, his play has been so poor I would consider benching him.

I never thought he was a WR diva but how can you think anything else after seeing him not even try to knock the ball down on those interceptions yesterday by Sherman.

I am not sure what has happened to him mentally but I would have to think he has destroyed his reputation in the Giants' family. Maybe he will regain what he once was with another team but, personally, he has wiped out in one season all the good he had done in the previous 4.

I know some team will give him big money but still you have to really wonder if this is the right way to earn a new contract? I guess I am just too old school but his play this year has bordered on disgusting.

He just fell off the face of the earth after being great during our Superbowl run. It's amazing how fast an NFL player can go from a star to pedestrian.

It doesn't matter much anymore. This team wasn't doing anything this year anyway. He's gone and someone new will come in for us to cheer for.

weird is he is still coming off like a great guy in media interviews.

But since early on in the season, there have been a number of plays where he just looks like he is half-assing it.

I don't get it. People like Paul Dottino have hinted at an injury but an injury wouldn't cause him to just quit like he did against the Eagles.

yes, very disappointed. And frankly I am very surprised as to what has transpired with him both mentally and physically.

That ankle/foot injury in the Tampa Bay game broke a lot more than his foot that day. A real shame.

I never thought I would say deactivate him for the rest of the season ON PURPOSE. But I will be disappointed in the Giants if that is not what what they do. They need to make a statement to the locker room that it is team first. Nicks smiling yesterday was it for me. He should not wear the jersey again this year.
I thought the announcers made way to big of a deal
Blue Baller : 12/16/2013 10:22 am : link
about him not competing for the ball that Sherman intercepted.

That was a poorly thrown ball. The only thing he could have done was tackle Sherman. Calvin Johnson couldn't have caught that ball
I agree with your sentiment

He's a goner. With his disappearance this year and Randle's struggles, Giants may have no choice but to consider drafting another WR at some point, considering the ability to find a good TE seems to elude us.
I realize it probably won't happen because
MikeN in Ottawa : 12/16/2013 10:25 am : link
you still have dumbass owners like Snyder and Jones but I really hope people are paying attention to his game day behaviour in spite of his media congeniality.

I really hope the reaction he gets in free agency is not what he expects. I know TC basically named him without naming him yesterday in post game comments.

I also hope he sits for the rest of the year...frankly, could care less if we win another game...I would love to see him have to answer questions about why he didn't score a TD all year long.
I have to believe there is an underlying issue.
Curtis in VA : 12/16/2013 10:25 am : link
I'm sure its all going to come out after the season is over.

If indeed it is an injury, that would be sad. You hate to see guys with gobs of talent like Nicks never able to showcase it on the field.

I don't know if Nicks is a goner but I agree with your point on Randle. He is definitely not the answer as of right now. Way too inconsistent.

Which is why I don't believe that's the problem. I think it's a combination that he's not 100% and he's not getting the opportunities he's had in the past.
I'd strongly consider taking Mike Evans if he's there

a great WR to becoming this half assing player. I don't know who is advising Nicks but clearly his main focus is not suffering an injury. However by him not playing hard and making plays he is losing even more money than if he was playing well and gotten hurt again. At this point I would not be upset in the least if he leaves which I am 100% certain he will.

Even if nobody named names or pointed fingers at exactly which Giants were lacking in the effort department, anybody with eyes had to question the effort wideout Hakeem Nicks gave Sunday. Or more to the point, didn’t give.

Eli Manning targeted the struggling receiver five times in the 23-0 loss to Seattle. One of those ended up as a catch, with the other four ending up as interceptions. And from the outside, it didn’t appear as if Nicks gave his utmost in fighting for the ball.

2 were underthrown and 1 was behind him. So, yes, it's Nicks' fault.

Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 12/16/2013 10:37 am : link
Nicks has been my favorite player on this team during these past handful of years. He didn't have freakish size/speed measurable, but he was simply a baller who had awesome hands and was powerful enough to own DBs. He also seemed like a really great teammate, always giving an effort when it came to blocking. He also handled the Victor Cruz-mania about as well as you could ask him to, he had no problem letting Victor get the shine and then when the team needed him he stepped up in the 2011 playoffs.

I don't know what happened to him this year. Injuries played a role but there was just something off about him this year from the start. Mentally, he just didn't seem to be 100% and his effort has looked mediocre all year.

I wish him good luck in the future, but I think and honestly hope it will be for another team.
nicks
taterbug : 12/16/2013 10:41 am : link
Yall still don’t get it. Nicks will “win” when this is all said and done. Just like Mario Manningham is winning….and we thought he was crazy for not wanting to be here. Didn’t manningham say that the reason he left was because teams rarely win back to back titles. Well, since that statement, we’ve missed the playoffs twice.

Instead of questioning will be here next year, start questioning why in the heck he’d want to be here next year. This team is a mess, starting from top to bottom. Eli is on the decline in a major way and unless he becomes friends with some HGH, his best days are behind him. Nicks will get to pick a good/great situation next year with possible cheaper state taxes, better winters, less media, a better QB….the list goes on. Point is…NICKS WON!

seattle's receivers made plays on poorly thrown balls all day yesterday, or at the very least broke them up.

It is ahrd to determine sometimes if he is half-assing some plays or if he legitimately lost a step. But, besides the lack of game breaking plays, he has had a lot of drops this year on balls he normally does and should catch.

wants out. Has for a while. I though he was injured, and he might be, but I think he just wants to get to FA, even at reduced value. Getting out is the most important thing to him now IMO. Just leave what he sees as a sinking ship. I saw him smiling a lot yesterday, and running poor routes.

I am disappointed in him.

He's been 'aw shucks'-ing(in a very negative way) since that first injury in '12.

I wish him well, even if it's in Carolina, but just want to add:
Thanks Hakeem. He doesnt deserve a goodbye thread.
Probably an over-reaction, but I would have cut him this morning.

I thought he was going to be an all-time Giant. But there is something so wrong with him as a football player and frankly, as a teammate, right now.
Sad
NJGiantFan84 : 12/16/2013 11:34 am : link
thing is that I think he'll still have a great career. I think he was hurt that the Giants did not extend his contract prior to this season and now he just wants out. He is useless for us right now, so I don't even think he gets a competitive offer from the Giants. He'll end up a very good player somewhere else.

i mean how did he not bat down the underthrown terribly placed balls. if you cant help keep Eli's rookiel level INTs down to help his future HOF candidacy i want you off the team!
the disgust over nicks should be about his inability to make big plays to put points on the board... about his drops early in the season, about his conduct in the offseason losing valuable reps, and about his moping at times.
we should NOT have threads all day about him because your QB made AWFUL TERRIBLE throws yesterday. he jumped on the 3rd one, the throw was just THAT bad and THAT late. the first one was a BAD throw that the biggest most physical DB was in great position to get. adn the one over the middle, when viewed from the angle behind the LOS, was such a bad throw he has no shot at it.
maybe if he frowned instead of smiled when the opponent was likely reminding them how much they suck towards the end of the game, we would think his effort was more.

1) Nicks is a UFA after the season

2) I don't think anyone is blaming Nicks for Eli's poor performance, but Nicks for whatever reason just seems to have lost his explosiveness and strength. He seems weak on the ball, and doesnt have that next gear anymore. I wonder if there really is an injury because he doesn't look even remotely like the 2011 Nicks.

81_Great_Dane : 12/16/2013 12:22 pm : link
than any Giants receiver I've seen, and I've been watching since the Tarkenton years. He looked like he had Hall of Fame potential. He hadn't performed at the very highest level (He was never at the level of Calvin Johnson, for example) but he was a beast during the last Super Bowl run and seemed to be ready to move up to that level.

But he's not close to that anymore. He's not that guy.

I wonder whether Victor Cruz's success bugs Nicks. Cruz has turned out to be the go-to guy, the reliable fan favorite. Nicks was the #1 pick, he was supposed to be the Man. Cruz is an UDFA.

Regarding the INTs, I can't argue they're Nicks's fault, BUT: Every WR in the league has to pick up his QB now and then. Not every ball will be perfect. If it's not perfect, you have to fight for it. You have to compete. It looks like Nicks has stopped competing. If the ball's right there, he'll catch it -- unless the DB outjumps him or outfights him. And if the ball's not right there, well, the ball wasn't right there.

He has no fire in his belly

The psyche of the Giants players is much like Gilbride's offense. It's great when its hitting on all cylinders, and everyone is physically and mentally executing their assignments, but if just one part of the puzzle is off, it just looks like a total mess. The same seems true for the Giants collective psyche as a team. When things are going well, they rise to Super Bowl heights, even when they are the lesser team on paper, but when things go badly. and they start to lose, the once great players on the Giants play soft, of thoughtless, get beat and burnt. A few players, and I mean a few, buck the trend, and seem to still fight when things are bad: Cruz, and Rolle are first to come to mind, and there are others, but Nicks is definitely not one of them. You would think, just for selfish reasons that he would go absolutely crazy in a contract year to fight for every ball, and work on his craft so hard that he could be a brightspot in an otherwise dismal offense, but he hasnt done that. He has sunk with the tide of the rest of the offense. I thought his problems would only be injury related this season, and I also did not see an absolute implosion of the Giants offense either. Blame the O Line.

believing some sort of medical problem was causing his poor play this year ... I'm done with him ... He shows no spunk - no fire ... totally unlike his previous years here ...
If he's just going through motions so as not to hurt himself hoping some dumb team will pay him big bucks next year - I think he's cost himself millions ... I know if I were a GM, I'd be very leery ... I would never believe it but I think now there's a lot of Jamarcus Russell in him ...

If Giants can't get Evans
KeoweeFan : 12/16/2013 2:07 pm : link
who is somewhat similar in style to Nicks, then Sammy Watkins would be a smart, dependable receiver who could really excel; but may even be better in a a different scheme where you could get the ball to him in space (and not depend on passes 30 yards down field); he has excellent YAC.. He might also be a multipurpose offensive weapon (returns etc.)
I'm trying to think
PaulBlakeTSU : 12/16/2013 2:25 pm : link
of what incentive Nicks has to not compete hard, given it's a contract year.

The only thing I can think of is that he doesn't care so much about getting the most money possible, just that he'll get a contract with enough guaranteed money to ensure that he never has to work a day in his life when he retires. So he doesn't care about his production this year, only that he is still able to be a football player.

Other than that, it doesn't make any sense for him to loaf and so maybe he really does have a crippling injury or that he just lost his speed and explosiveness.
