Nicks...is anyone else as disappointed as I am

MikeN in Ottawa : 12/16/2013 10:15 am
in this guy this season?

Two years ago, I thought Nicks was an absolute beast and would be the best receiver in Giants' history. I would have, at that time, taken Nicks, hands down, over any wide receiver in the NFL. He was that good.

Now, to hear him yesterday refute what TC had to say after the game, to see him literally not compete at all for several balls...a common theme this year for him...I cannot believe I am watching the same guy. And he is only 25.

I know the injury thing but it is hard to watch a guy, who competed so hard previously, just go through the motions and let's be honest...Nicks is just going through the motions right now. To me, his play has been so poor I would consider benching him.

I never thought he was a WR diva but how can you think anything else after seeing him not even try to knock the ball down on those interceptions yesterday by Sherman.

I am not sure what has happened to him mentally but I would have to think he has destroyed his reputation in the Giants' family. Maybe he will regain what he once was with another team but, personally, he has wiped out in one season all the good he had done in the previous 4.

I know some team will give him big money but still you have to really wonder if this is the right way to earn a new contract? I guess I am just too old school but his play this year has bordered on disgusting.

maybe he is hurt
HomerJones45 : 12/16/2013 2:54 pm : link
he looks like he has lost acceleration and speed.

"Fighting for the ball" is an attempt to save Eli from poor throws. Nicks would have had to go through the DB to catch the throw up the sideline. It was thrown to the inside when Nicks had the outside.

On the int over the middle, the ball was thrown behind Nicks. How much was he supposed to be able to fight when his momentum is away from the poorly thrown ball.

I think Nicks has some physical limitations and he allowed his contract situation to eat at him. This is supposed to be his contract year and he is forced into a different role and having to try and catch passes from the scattergun. He's not helping himself or the team this season.

Since, according to some, it's never Eli's fault, Nicks is supposed to have 20 foot arms and eyes in the back of his head.

There are plenty of talented wrs in the upcoming draft, not just Watkins & Evans. I really like the guy out of Vanderbilt, mathews

But I think he was one of the guys Rolle was speaking about at the end of the game.
Nicks mailed in the season...

...I'm convinced he and his agent wanted to stay healthy for his free agent market. So he didn't go all out or put himself in harms way.

Has his lack of production done more harm than say another serious leg injury to his value on the open market? Only time will tell but he let his team and the fans down this year.
What did you all want Nicks to do?
oldutican : 12/16/2013 3:57 pm : link
So the consensus is Nicks failed Eli and the Giants by not "competing" on 3 passes to him that were intercepted. Attached is a video with all 5 picks in the game. Please watch it and tell me if you still think the problem is Nicks.

has not only taken himself out of the game but his other receivers also! I'm not saying the int's are on him, what I am saying is his lack of effort for pretty much the entire year has taken Cruz out of the game pretty much also. When defenses don't have to worry about Nicks, they can keep Cruz in check. Think back to when Plax shot himself off of this team, offensively we sputtered because he was our#1 and didn't have to worry about him hurting them!

I cant wait to hear the commentary on the video you posted... the double pump on the last one after he was open for a back cone throw. hitting sherman in stride on the first one... the crossing route is low, slow, and more to the defender given how soft its thrown because its another back foot high risk low reward throw.
amazing... cant believe he showed no effort on those... what a joke people here are.
the argument is whether he is worth signing/paying... based on weak performance this season. but good lord. the amount of stupid on here.

There is a group think here that loves to find scapegoats.
From a QBs perspective...

Again, if Nicks isnt wide open or it lands in his lap, he cant catch it. You're right - it is Eli's fault. he should never throw the lazy, overrated bum the ball anymore. He cant get open, he cant fight for the ball, and he gets outmuscled. Nicks should be RGIII for the rest of the year.
I guess Eli didn't read Matt Millen today

From his presser today
Q: Was there a throw that you would like to have back in one of your interceptions?

A: Probably the little short crossing route to Hakeem was the one that was behind him. That was probably the one that I thought was the poorest throw of the day.
The one that hit him in the hands

where it looks like Nicks dogged it on the route. Seems about right.

Poor throws, poor effort and good defensive plays! the play to end the half was a hail mary and the only one I will excuse! I see all 3 factors involved in each int.

If nicks ran full speed (forget running a lazy route like Millen suggests) he is slow as molasses.

Again I blame eli. Should never even look at his way. Remember that big play nicks made this year? I sure as hell don't. Hes remembered for the following things this year.

1. Smiling on sidelines in blowouts.
2. Not being able to throw himself the ball when covered.
3. Celebrating a hail Mary TD - 7 yards short of the goaline.
4. Taking himself out of a game when insode the red zone.
5. Quitting on routes... especially the philly game.
the last int - nicks actually had

weird is he is still coming off like a great guy in media interviews.

But since early on in the season, there have been a number of plays where he just looks like he is half-assing it.

I don't get it. People like Paul Dottino have hinted at an injury but an injury wouldn't cause him to just quit like he did against the Eagles.

Hell, try preseason. He showed in preseason, what kind of year he was going to have.
Nicks was never the same after that Tampa Bay game.

His drop off really just boggles my mind. At least we have the memories.

Aside from Nicks smiling a number of times yesterday when his team was getting trucked which really pissed me, I am not really going at him for his performance yesterday. Yesterday was on Eli all the way in my view, I felt every int was on him yesterday.

Every throw was off. 5 ints and getting his WR crushed. The guy just had a downright awful day.

Regarding Nicks, it is more the collective lack of production and his lazy approach this season that really showed something be off to ranging to "I don't care, I am counting the days" attitude. As Eric said, the writing was on the wall for this in the pre-season.

yep very
RasputinPrime : 12/17/2013 2:18 am : link
I loved him prior to this year but I can't even remember a single big play he has made this entire season. I recall Murphy and Jernigan more than Nicks. That shouldn't be even possible with his talent level - injured or not. Real shame.
