Thoughts about moving Pugh to LT and Beatty to RT?

yatqb : 12/18/2013 9:11 pm
I KNOW that Beatty is making a fortune, but I wonder whether Pugh's feet make him a more prototypical LT, and Beatty may be less taxed at RT. Neither are road graders, so neither are going to be great drive-blocking RTs. Given that, might they be better off switchiing positions next year?

Then sign Mack if he's able to leave Cleveland, add Asamoah too, and draft another OG in one of the first two rounds, and we're set on the line.

Neither is Pugh. But he may be a better LT than Beatty down the road.
NO! PLEASE NO !

I am so tired of the giants playing people out of position. Hey, lets take this guy and make him play somewhere else. Kiwi can play LB! This guy can be a TE! Maybe Eli can punt!.

Maybe if Jerry Reese pisses on a spark plug, he can get this offense firing on all cylinders.
The Giants already said he couldn't play RT 2 years ago
Giants2012 : 12/18/2013 9:39 pm : link
How closely do people follow this team?
How about this
Giants : 12/18/2013 9:45 pm : link
we use players where they have been proven to shine. Then we get players who have played well at the other positions. Could be through the FA market or the draft.
its not a crazy question because
rasbutant : 12/18/2013 9:49 pm : link
Pugh would make a good LT. But that said Beatty better get better in the offseason, because he is being paid to play LT and if he can't he will be finding a new job somewhere else.
What if Pugh is the better LT? Doesn't it make sense to have him take
yatqb : 12/18/2013 9:50 pm : link
over there and let Beatty (or whomever, eventually) play RT? I just think his feet are better than Beatty's and that by next year he'll be ready for the LT job. Beatty has to do a lot to prove he's ready to handle LT once again...we can't go through another year like he's had at LT this season.
Pugh is doing

good at RT. He stays and everyone else changing or getting beat out if fair game.
Definitely.

when did they say beatty cant play right tackle?
fame56 : 12/18/2013 9:53 pm : link
you take your best tackle and put him on the left side..if thats pugh, (which I believe it is), then thats what they do for 2014..dallas did it with tyron smith after his rookie year on the right side and he's doing fine there..

if beatty can play left tackle, then he can play right tackle, where he will be less stressed, although several nfl pundits and ex-players have commented this week that there is less difference between the two positions in today's game than there used to be

draft, or free agency a guard and center, work with boothe and maybe mosley, pray the eric hermann can play, and hope that the damage to eli manning's game is not irrevocable
Agree on Pugh at LT...He could be a good one
drkenneth : 12/18/2013 9:53 pm : link
Draft Taylor Lewan..and Presto- Great set of tackles. Problem is, we are stuck with Beatty and we need 3 more inside OL.

This O-line needs at least 3 new starters..possibly 4.

Not saying Pugh can't make the switch, because he played well at LT in cpllege & has played well this year. Please don't compare him to Tyron Smith. He is a physical freak that was drafted to play LT as he is a prototypical LT. The two players are not even comparable.
I don't think Pugh is a LT
LauderdaleMatty : 12/18/2013 10:01 pm : link
People look at him as a better option because unless Neatty has a miraculous turn around we are looking at a guy who is seriously over paid for the value he delivers.
Pugh right tackle
rdt288 : 12/18/2013 10:01 pm : link
For next 10 years (g/d willing)

They aren't moving him around. Not happening.
beatty will be fine.
HomerJones45 : 12/18/2013 10:51 pm : link
leave them both where they are.
They are where their skillsets put them, as is
JonC : 12/18/2013 10:55 pm : link
swapping them would likely weaken the OL at two positions.
Beatty is too soft to play RT

Pugh has been fine for RT as a rookie.
Sec134 : 12/19/2013 1:17 am : link
I am happy with his work there, and Beatty has struggled but he has had multiple LGs next to him. The line as a unit has been a BIG problem.
Don't blame the tackles IMO. They work as a unit.
Beatty is weak...
Goin Deep : 12/19/2013 1:47 am : link
He needs to get to the gym and bulk up strength wise...
I mean did you see the sack he gave up against the vikings DE who just reached around him with one hand and hauled down Eli. He gets bull rushed and to add to that he cant hold his own against quick speed rushers.
I don't know what the answer is but it's not Beatty at LT.
No
jeff57 : 12/19/2013 5:58 am : link
But if you want to talk about moving Pugh, or even Beatty, to LG if theydraft a blue chip tackle like Cameron Erving, that's a different story.
Beatty is not weak. If you watch him in the run
Tuckrule : 12/19/2013 5:59 am : link
Game he isn't weak. He has a technical flaw. Late out of his stance and always reaching without a base under him. He can correct than and I suspect he will. The line is not as bad as it seems. The first and most glaring issue is left guard and right guard. I would resign boothe and and find either a center or guard. Boothe can fill the void at center for a couple of seasons until a permanent replacement can't be found. Having said that( curb reference) we should go WR in round 1. Also a tight end goes a long well in helping the offensive line. Something we do not have.

Yea Jared Allen is a slouch. How dare he give up a bull rush to him and god forbid Eli moves 3 inches to his left or right and avoids it. I get it's popular to bash Beatty but it's getting ridiculous
Beatty isn't a RT
Phil from WNY : 12/19/2013 6:58 am : link
but if the Giants get a good tackle in the draft, I could see playing the better of the new tackle or Pugh at LT and make Beatty the swing tackle - either in 2014 or 2015. I realize that Beatty makes a fortune but I'd prefer to see the best two tackles on the field.
The RT has to be able to run block.......
Simms11 : 12/19/2013 8:54 am : link
and Beatty is terrible at run blocking IMO. I do think Pugh would do fine at LT, but why mess with the tackles right now. They are not the major problem with this oline. I do think Beatty will come back better next year too. He needs to also get in the weight room and commit himnself to off-season conditioning and technique improvement.

The interior Oline needs to be the major focus here. Need a solid center and two guards that can maul people. We HAVE to get back to controlling the LOS.
I'd rather move Beatty off the roster

It's almost heresy to say
fkap : 12/19/2013 8:59 am : link
but perhaps Flaherty (who has a good reputation) needs to be replaced? It's not like there've been a plethora of overachievers lately.
Agree with Tuckrule
awm34 : 12/19/2013 9:00 am : link
We need two guards, period. Beatty's play will improve alongside a competent guard.

It won't come together right away, however.
All we can hope for,
Doomster : 12/19/2013 9:03 am : link
is this is a one year aberration for Beatty?

Stats were pulled out stating he played well last year, when I didn't think he did to warrant the contract he got.....but it was another Baas situation, where we were desperate for a LT and he was the only option...

How do you build an OL if one of the blocks is a weak link?

Who knows, maybe he comes back and plays well next year....will he be repositioned? Who knows?

Until the blocks for the line are assembled by free agency and the draft, we have no idea who plays where.....

Do we take a chance on Baas another year, or do we cut him?

Boothe is not a starter.....what he is is a versatile backup, and a good one at that.....

From what little we have seen of Brewer/Mosley, it doesn't look good....

And what about Snee? Think he will walk away from 7M, if he thinks he can play? And then there is the father in law connection....

It's hard to believe, there are still those on BBI that think Diehl will be back....

So, it's obvious we need two guards and a center.....we also need more depth on the bench.....

And part of every OL is is a good blocking TE....

And then, once the blocks are in place, how long will it be before they become a cohesive unit? One thing is for sure.....if this line does not block well next year, how will this affect Eli? He looks shell shocked this year....another year of this kind of line play, could be irreparable on his psyche....
The interior of the line is the main policy
jeff57 : 12/19/2013 9:08 am : link
But, although I think the Beatty of last season is closer to what he is than the Beatty of this season, if you get the chance to take a potentially dominant LT, you should take it.
Beatty needs to pick up his mental approach too
JonC : 12/19/2013 9:41 am : link
Pushing yourself, growing your game, developing your technique, reducing the mental errors in game action are things he must elevate.

Pugh's already doing it, hopefully Beatty will pick it up.

But if I'm Reese, by no means am I passing on a blue goose LT in this draft, if that's the way the picks unfold.
nope
GiantsFan84 : 12/19/2013 9:59 am : link
beatty is staying at LT for the next two years minimum. no point arguing otherwise
Beatty
NJGiantFan84 : 12/19/2013 10:04 am : link
deserves a chance to redeem himself next year. Hopefully, they bring in some guys to solidify the line. Confidence means so much in sports and if the Giants create a solid line and Beatty gets his confidence back, maybe he can return to form.

If Beatty fails, they may very well shuffle some piesces aroung, making Pugh LT & putting Will @ RT or replacing him.
Beatty is such a sweet guy.

You have to give Beatty & Pugh
mrvax : 12/19/2013 10:09 am : link
the chance to excel at both RT and LT.

We are stuck with Beatty because is next 3 years of dead money is 15.5M, 8.2M and finally 5M.

Pugh has played LT his entire college career so he should get a chance to shine at LT. However, if Beatty sucks worse at RT than he did this year at LT, you can't move him. I don't think he plays inside at all.

Battle it out in camp and pre-season next year, let the chips fall where they may.
Beatty a terrible run blocker?
HomerJones45 : 12/19/2013 10:17 am : link
Nonsense.

Beatty has had a few bad games. It isn't like every game has been bad. He admitted a couple of weeks ago that he was trying to copy others and wasn't being himself, and I don't think his name was called once against Seattle.

And before you anoint Pugh, understand that he has been getting a lot of help on his side of the field from backs, TE and other OL. There is nothing wrong with that, it's to be expected since he is a rookie, but let's not act like Pugh has been an All-Pro on an island all by himself over there.
I don't think Beatty is physical or aggressive enough to

left guard next to him to raise his game.
I agree with some above, the OL acts as a unit
PatersonPlank : 12/19/2013 11:16 am : link
Fix the interior line and I bet Beatty looks a lot better (much like the running game and Eli will look better with a better line). Its all inter-related. The Giants aren't stupid, they wouldn't have given Beatty that money if he sucked. Look at a lot of other players they didn't give money too, that BBI couldn't understand why, They moved on, and have basically not played much since. I think we also see some of this in Nicks. My guess is Beatty is still getting better, has the tools, and is being hampered by our lousy guard/center play.
Let`s wait til Tommie does go,
oldog : 12/19/2013 11:22 am : link

I think Beatty would benefit
Go Terps : 12/19/2013 12:07 pm : link
from higher level play at left guard. Since Seubert left it feels like we've been playing musical chairs at the position.

Guards always fall in the draft, and we could probably get a beast in the second round.
I'd say leave Boothe at center
awm34 : 12/19/2013 1:00 pm : link
draft one guard as early as possible and bring in another as a free agent. Boothe is adequate but Baas & Diehl have to go.
hasn't Booth anchored LG
fkap : 12/19/2013 1:03 pm : link
except when forced to move to center?

of course, he's been forced to center a fair amount.

We NEED two guards. Hopefully Booth will be amenable to a minimum contract to be a quality backup.
Draft
blue42 : 12/19/2013 1:49 pm : link
Richardson from Oregon...he's 330 and can play both spots. Then figure out in camp where to fit him. Sign a good free agent center and draft another guard in the later rounds.

To compete against good teams you need a very good line. Not an average OL....a good one.Set the bar high.
