Linval
BBSB Times 4 and Counting : 12/19/2013 7:55 pm : link
Gotta keep him, young and plays hard. A core player for the next 4-5 years.
Maybe Tuck will re-sign
Bill in UT : 12/19/2013 7:55 pm : link
for the vet minimum so they have money for Joseph. I didn't notice that offer in the article. Maybe the editor cut it
One

player I'd be more than willing to overpay for. $5-$6M a year. Nicks is gone, so give Linval some of his money. At some point you'd have to say no if a real bidding war ensues, but I'd come right out of the gate with an extremely strong offer.
wow judging by his

Fine letting him go.

They have a high draft pick waiting in the wings. Giants need the money elsewhere.
I would not rob Peter to pay Paul.
robbieballs2003 : 12/19/2013 8:36 pm : link
Unless the price tag is outrageous I would resign him. He is one of our core guys and a huge reason why our run defense is so good. You can still play Hankins along with Jenkins since Jenkins can play DE.
I'm betting ...
FStubbs : 12/19/2013 8:59 pm : link
... the price will be outrageous. Good DTs are hard to find across the league and somebody will overpay.
I think the writing is on the wall here.
Enoch : 12/19/2013 9:04 pm : link
The Giants would prefer to draft their starting 1-tech DT and back him up with cheap past-their-prime FAs. The extra MM$ spent on an in-his-prime veteran's contract don't add up to enough extra production, in their view.

They'll make Joseph an offer, but there is probably another team out there willing to pay more.
Pretty simple....
Emlen'sGremlins : 12/19/2013 9:05 pm : link
....sign Joseph and say goodbye to Tuck.
Who says good DTs are hard to find?
Bill in UT : 12/19/2013 9:06 pm : link
We got Jenkins for $1.1M, Patterson and Rogers for under a million each, and Kuhn in the wings a $480K
agree, say goodbye to Tuck
Toby'sGMEN : 12/19/2013 9:13 pm : link
keep Joseph, continue to develop Hankins. Hope JPP comes back healthier, and use a high draft pick (1st, 2nd or 3rd round) on a DE
Linval is going to get a big offer
oipolloi : 12/19/2013 9:14 pm : link
something on the order of 6/50 with 20 million guaranteed

Hate to lose him but the cap space plus a third round comp pick might be a better way to go, especially given how Hankins has played.

it's going to be a tough call

wish the Giants had locked him up last year

and the real gut check in this whole thing is the 6 million in cap space that will go to Baas; if Giants lose Linval, look no further than that restructure for the reason why
$8M a year for Joseph?
Bill in UT : 12/19/2013 9:17 pm : link
Don't let the door hit you in the ass, bro
I think we can forget about comp picks this year
robbieballs2003 : 12/19/2013 9:27 pm : link
We need to bring in free agents. We should be signing at least two OL, at least one TE, at least one RB, probably a WR, a DE, a LB, and CBs. Chances are we are going to bringing in a lot of new faces. I don't know if this is the year to sit back and hope we get a third round pick for losing players. We have way too many needs to address and we cannot wait until the draft to do so.
A

similar deal to Cofield's as the article says would be 6/36. I'd go for that, depending on the signing bonus.

The one thing that works against Joseph is that he's not a pass rusher. Of course, some of that this year, is because we get no pressure from our DEs. But I don't recall him ever having a lot of sacks.

It's true they drafted Hankins, and that seems to replicate when they drafted Joseph with Cofield as an impending free agent. But I think the Giants had cap issues that prevented them from resigning Cofield, and won't make that mistake again with Joseph. We're going to cut or restructure/extend a lot of people.

The run D is the only part of this team that works. Jerry went to a lot of trouble to fix it in the offseason, and isn't going to want to have to fill yet another hole. Joseph is also one of his few draft successes. As I said, at some point, you'd have to say no, but the wallet is going to have to open wide for him, as it should. He's been great.

My guess is he resigns. Patterson too. Then we go:

DT: Joseph, Hankins, Patterson, Kuhn.
DE: JPP, Jenkins, Moore, and maybe Tuck.

We get a fifth DE as a veteran FA or low round draft pick.
Jenkins is not going to be a full time DE
robbieballs2003 : 12/19/2013 9:47 pm : link
Talk about not getting a pass rush.

Bill in UT : 12/19/2013 9:52 pm : link
I respect your opinions and hate to disagree, but I have to on Joseph. IMO, Joseph is a good, not a great DT. A good example of the kind of guy Reese has been blowing the cap on. I would go maybe to $4M on him. Beyond that, I keep Jenkins at DT and keep Kiwi, who costs us $1.8M above his dead money at DE. And resign Tuck for maybe $2-3M max. If JPP and Moore come up big at DE next year, Tuck and Kiwi are adequate to give them breathers. If they don't come up big, we're screwed at DE regardless. And hope fully we draft a LB who can blitze or send Hill more often.
Joseph
nyynyg : 12/19/2013 9:58 pm : link
is NOT getting 6 on 50. I want to sign him and we have a shot at signing him. He is not getting 6 for 50 with 20 guaranteed, no way.

No problems with disagreeing. That's what the board is for.

Joseph is not a complete DT. He doesn't generate a lot of pass rush. But he is great against the run. Jerry described him as a "human post" on draft day. He's better at it than Cofield IMO, and Cofield was a very good run stuffer.

You win (or lose) in the trenches, as we've seen. The OL is bad because they can't block anyone. The run D is good because others can't block us.

Kiwi should be cut. It's taken a lot to get me to that position, but he should be gone unfortunately. I'm not sure about Tuck. It depends on what he wants. He might still be useful as a spot player, but he's had an injury history, and is on the wrong side of thirty. I certainly wouldn't jeopardize Joseph to resign him.

At some point, you have to stop with Joseph if the bidding gets out of control, but I'd given him what the Redskins gave Cofield.
Joseph
pjcas18 : 12/19/2013 10:15 pm : link
is gone, like Cofield was.

Hankins is his replacement.

Jenkins, Hankins, and a low $$ UFA and Kuhn will be the DT's. Maybe a late round draft pick.

Someone will offer him too much money and the Giants won't be able to match because of other priorities and limited cap space.

Maybe they even re-sign Shaun Rogers if he doesn't retire.

Jenkins doesn't play the same position as Joseph. Hankins does and you can put Hankins and Joseph at DT And slide Jenkins to DE . Cap,space is at a premium because Reese has blown too many drafts and has to them go out and get vets who make a lot more than younger players.
Must resign Joseph

i was skeptical
dancing blue bear : 12/19/2013 11:02 pm : link
but it may be possible. esp. with nicks not getting big money (which was prob something the giants planned for)

i am all for it at anything less than $4mil/yr
Cant pay everyone

WideRight : 12/20/2013 5:43 am : link
Core guy on a subpar DL is not worth FA money, and that draft pick is valuable.
Joseph
stretch234 : 12/20/2013 5:50 am : link
He has played 51 games for the Giants and has 9 sacks and 160 tackles. Cofield in his first 63 games produced 7.5 sacks and 30 less tackles

If people don't think Joseph is getting a big deal they are not paying attention. He is a 325lb DT who is very good against the run and needs to be double teamed who does not miss games

I wont pay big money to a DT
Tuckrule : 12/20/2013 6:02 am : link
who cant get after the qb. Some of that is the fault of the DE, cough, cough, Kiwi. However, just like cofield, we should let him walk. It was the right move to let big CO go and that worked out well for us.

Also, we have players who we potentially need to resign like JPP if she shows vast improvemnt next year which he should. My friends brother is best friends with kevin Boothe who 2 years ago told me personally that William Beatty is soft but hell get a big contract because he has good feet and athletic ability, sure enough it happened. He also said that they will let linval walk because they view him at the same value as cofield. If anyone overpays. Cofield got 6 years with I beleive 11 million guaranteed. Thats high for a DT.
to be fair
Tuckrule : 12/20/2013 6:05 am : link
I view linval as a better player overall. comparing cofield stats with linval is a joke. Cofield played with a different D cordinator and a different pair of book ends and a different tackle, fred robbins(who i love) next to him who was an absolute beast.
I think Joseph is going
nyynyg : 12/20/2013 7:35 am : link
To get a big deal and I think we should be the one to give it to him. I just don't think it is going to be 8 mil per year. Way too much.

I think Joseph is an important signing for us. We already have enough holes on the DL that we need to fill. At least we know Joseph is solid. I have no idea what we have in JPP anymore.

You sign Joseph and Jenkins and then they and Hankins are your rotation and let the others fill it out. If we can get a good DT in the draft, even better. Seems like a weak DE draft so not sure what we do at end.
Cannot allow another DT goto Washington
Giants2012 : 12/20/2013 7:51 am : link
The team has just another hole if Joseph walks. He's a rock
Expensive decision on Linval who has been
Jimmy Googs : 12/20/2013 7:57 am : link
good. I think franchise tag is $8+ million so that doesn't help other than probably sets our ceiling on him at around $5-6 million (all-in).

And please don't mention that we also have Kuhn in future rotation if Linval leaves. That is like saying we have Louis Murphy at WR if Nicks leaves.

Tough to pay a DT 8 mil, but I would rather keep
Victor in CT : 12/20/2013 8:12 am : link
Linval than Kiwi and Tuck at this point. He's a young vet, solid player and if Hankins is what we hope they could have a very formidable interior with Jenkins rotating in as well.

baaahahahahaa
Give him a 6-7 million
Ash : 12/20/2013 8:32 am : link
a year deal. He's improved, is an excellent run stuffer, and has many years of production ahead of him, barring injury. We let Cofield go, and although he's not a superstar, we did miss his consistent play, especially with Canty's injuries. Build up the middle. Try and keep Beason, have Hill play center field, and put Hankins and Joseph down the middle plugging the run game.
Should get Vince Wilfork
Simms11 : 12/20/2013 8:44 am : link
money - about 4 to 5 mil per. That shouldn't break the bank, especially with Eli restructuring and Nicks probably going elsewhere. Need to maintain the DT corps as is. They were the only shining spot on this Defense, other than the play of Rolle and Beason.
