Next year's OLIne ?

mushroom : 12/23/2013 10:50 am
With the constraints of the cap and the needs at other positions how many new oline players can the the Giants bring in either Free Agency or the draft?
Has either Brewer or Mosley shown enough to be answers on the line? At worse case they seem to be adequate depth and if either one can stay healthy and improve(which isn't asking all that much for relatively young players) they may even have a chance to start. Maybe it is just wishful thinking but it is the season for miracles
They will have enough cap room
BillT : 12/23/2013 10:54 am : link
To bring in a top FA OL and another reasonably priced FA OL at least.
I though Mosely
JoefromPa : 12/23/2013 10:54 am : link
played well the limited time he had last week and this
Suh has to be the most overrrated Dlineman in the League
Headhunter : 12/23/2013 10:56 am : link
or Brewer is the most underrrated Guard in the League
Sign at least one top-tier FA.

Sadly, with TC staying on, I think you're right.
3 new OLs

for the middle of the line, at least 2 NOT on the roster in '13.
dont let yesterday cloud what has been obvious all year

for some reason, the lions defensive tackles didnt wake up until the 2nd half, its ridiculous to assume brewer, boothe, and mosley/reynolds outplayed suh and fairley..

in fact, the whole lions team, (except the young r/b), werent ready to play this game for their playoff lives..its exactly the same scenario giants fans have suffered for years..need a game against a lesser opponent and come up empty..its as much an indictment of jim schwartz and his staff as anything you could say about tom coughlin and our staff

that being said, diehl wont be back..brewer is not an answer..boothe is a free agent..beatty was woeful this year..mosley might be able to play, we dont know yet..pugh is definitely part of next years offensive line, just not sure where yet

then theres goodin, hermann, reynolds, and whoever else in camp

so, that leaves the giants potentially needing 2 new guards and a center, at minimum..the offensive line was the biggest reason for the poor season we had this year..it doesnt need to be said anymore..

Mara should not permit this to happen. Snee has to retire also. Baas should be a post June 1st cut.

Need a good FA, at least 1, probably 2 and consider drafting a center that can run block really well. (Mauler)
If possible
Phil from WNY : 12/23/2013 11:48 am : link
draft a blue goose LT and the top-rated center to replace Diehl and Cordle. Get the best guard in FA that they can afford to replace Snee. Re-sign Boothe to a one year contract and let Boothe/Mosely/Brewer compete over one of the guard spots. All three can back-up right tackle (and center for Boothe), are cheap, and know the system.

Keep Baas and let him compete at center with the draft choice. He's a sunk cost, knows the system, and plays well sometimes. He'd be an ideal back-up center/back-up guard and who knows, maybe he agrees to reduce his salary like Diehl did last year?

Fix the OL in free agency. Pigeon-holing positions for certain rounds is not something Reese does.
With that win...

Yesterday win hurt the Giants; fixing that Swiss Cheese offensive line will require at least a top 12 pick. One kid you have to love is Alabama's OT, Cyrus Kouandjio. The kid is only 20 years old at 6-6 and 310 he is someone that the scouts will be looking at big-time; we just need the Giants to lose to the Redskin next week. Also worried that come the early part of round two most of top offensive can and will be gone. Heck I would go offensive lineman with the first two picks if Kouandjio was there in the first round and if David Yankey or either one of the Richardson's were on the board in round two. However with the many needs that the Giants have I would be happy with one of the four linemen. I know that some out there are thinking tight end or wide receiver in the first round but get that out of your heads.
I think the most important position for us on the Oline
Matt M. : 12/23/2013 12:07 pm : link
will be OC.
I applaud
NJGiantFan84 : 12/23/2013 12:13 pm : link
the effort from the OL yesterday. they are not a good unit but they played their asses off and gave it everything they have. But yeah, they need to bring in 1 top tier OL and another Vet OL, IMO. They should also draft 1 in the 1st 3 rounds and hopefully we can get a solid unit together.

We went through 11 O-linemen this year so i hope to god they do not rely on the guys on this roster.

Why did it take 16 weeks
Matt M. : 12/23/2013 12:16 pm : link
to realize we have a piss poor OL and that moving the pocket by design might not be a bad idea? Why did we seem to get away from that again in the 2nd half?
I think they will sign a veteran center
oipolloi : 12/23/2013 12:22 pm : link
A Shaun O'Hara type of guy. Not a big ticket FA.

And then they will draft an OT in the first round unless the Big Four (or Five, depending on how you feel about Robinson) are all taken.

Giants are not going to panic and go out and sign two big FA offensive linemen. As always, they will distribute their resources in picks and FAs across the board.

Look for them to sign a low-cost, Sean Locklear type vet at OT to serve as a back-up.
there is also a chance Baas is back
oipolloi : 12/23/2013 12:26 pm : link
i think this would be a mistake. But it is hard for a GM to swallow 6 million in dead money, which is basically admitting that the contract was a royal screw-up.

Next Year's Oline
Marshalman : 12/23/2013 1:02 pm : link
All of the knocks on Beatty performance minus injuries! All of the scouts in college said he was soft, not a tough guy, varied interests other than football needed major time in the weight room. He was considered boom or bust and has proven their evaluations correct. Go figure. The giants need a tackle!
Beatty
blue42 : 12/23/2013 1:45 pm : link
got knocked back 15 yards on one play.....he did not anchor and the DE blasted him.He needs to get stronger. Him and Brandon Myers.
The OL is terrible...one addition isn't going to do it. We need to draft at least two guys who can play day one.Guys returning from injury just can't be counted on. If you put that same sort of OL out there next year with Killdrive calling the plays it will be this year over again.
BTW...it was odd that the roll outs which worked in the first half were shelved in the second when the Lions DL took over the game. Go figure.
Baas
stretch234 : 12/23/2013 1:51 pm : link
With his contract would you keep him on the roster as a b/u for G & C. I think resign Boothe for C and get 2 FA for G and draft a G/C in the 2nd and another OL later

Go to camp with Beatty, Boothe, Pugh as starters - let 4 or 5 guys battle for the G's (vets and youngsters) and get a vet b/u T
Baas has always had a chronic neck ….
Manny in CA : 12/24/2013 12:37 am : link
Now he's coming off a "knee", he's gone.

(Amazing how good the line didSunday without Deihl), he's gone. Snee's gone.

Beatty, Pugh stay. Mosely,Reynolds, Boothe, (maybe Brewer) - reserve roles.

We'll see a new center and two guards (FAs and/or draft choices).
