I really hope Mr Mara comes out soon, addresses the media and says that although he is proud this team went 7-3 over the last 10, there will be change. Whether it is Reese, assistant coaches, players or something, this is 3 straight years now of missing the playoffs. With an "elite" QB, time is a wasting.

pganut : 12/29/2013 4:31 pm : link
And the fact that the win slightly impacted draft position negatively, I actually am proud of the guys today.

If for no other reason, just as I ask in coaching youth football, that the Giants played hard until the final whistle and gave their all (at great cost for some). Did the season suck? Of course. Did they fold when it would have been easy to do so? No. While it's obvious that there is much to fix, there are some positives to look toward (JJ, Hankins, Moore, Pugh).

1. Jernigan looks like he has finally figured it out. Everyone said he was a project--just took a year longer than we expected.

2. Boothe was terrible at center. Entire interior OL needs to be rebuilt.

3. Have to resign Tuck. Defense has been outstanding last 10 games--except for SD game and one GW drive by Dallas.

4. Joseph should be resigned too. Just spend the money to keep a strength a strength.

5. Draft an OT in the first and G/C in the second. It's a cliche but true nevertheless: The OL is going to get Eli injured. You don't risk your franchise QB. Reese, Coughlin, and Mara should be ashamed of what they did this year with the OL. Putting "loyalty" to injured vets ahead of Eli's well-being. I wish for just five minutes Eli could channel Peyton and rip this staff for the crap OL they "put together." Disgraceful.

They caught the Lions in a tailspin lost to any decent team they met. Beating crappy teams and losing to decent teams is what mediocre teams do best. It wasn't a great coaching job, just a reflection of the order of the schedule, tough up front, easy on the backside.

Torn Tendon : 12/29/2013 4:52 pm : link
Shame on those that called for him to be cut this past off-season. And even worse the ones that wanted Barden kept over Jernigan.

With Cruz showing he can be the #1 and Randle being able to take over the Mannigham role. It seems like Nicks is more expendable. They do need to add some depth though.
Peyton's line in Denver ain't that great either
SHO'NUFF : 12/29/2013 4:52 pm : link
they lose their starting tackle and made adjustments... run the majority of your plays out of shotgun and throw quick passes... it's a no-brainer if your interior line is consistently manhandled, but I guess not if your name is Gilbride.

Why? It is a legitimate question that the writers waited to ask until the season was over. His reaction is not surprising, but a legitimate question nonetheless.
the idea that the Giants have "no talent" is just ridiculous
oipolloi : 12/29/2013 5:00 pm : link
They finished 7-3. Yes, a lot of those wins came against struggling teams but so do the wins of any team with a good record.

The 0-6 start was because of the OL. Snee, Baas and Diehl took up roster space and cap space that should have been used on their replacements. Once, the younger guys got some time together, the OL played well enough to get some wins. Not great or even good. But decently enough to eke out a few victories. If the Giants had actually signed a FA OL instead of keeping Snee and drafted a G/C, this could easily have been a playoff team.

Just some ramblings...
bceagle05 : 12/29/2013 5:07 pm : link
The fact that this team won 7 games is proof of how awful this league is right now. We led the league in turnovers, had the worst OL in football, no tight ends, no running backs, one productive receiver and a good-but-not-great defense. In a previous era, that would've been a recipe for 2-14.

Stating the obvious, our OL is priorities 1-4. Right now it's Pugh and four turnstiles. I don't care if we do absolutely nothing else this offseason - we could spend four draft picks and sign two guys in FA for all I care. Just get it fixed once and for all. If we're gonna stick with the pre-historic Coughlin/Gilbride downfield passing offense, then we can't screw around anymore up front.

This moment screams for a system change on offense. The only guys we have penciled in going forward are Eli, Cruz, Pugh, Randle and maybe Jernigan. A perfect time to mold this into a more modern offense that takes full advantage of the recent rule changes/enforcements that favor the offense.

Fewell did a nice job overall I guess, but it's alarming that the defense has to go to him and beg for changes in order to get things going in the right direction. We have the makings of a very good defense and there will be better options than Fewell available. Our talent could really flourish with a top DC. Let's move on.

Hopefully this is the end of the Quinn era. Promote Izzo and see what happens.

Thanks for the great memories, Diehl, Webster and Snee. If Nicks walks, I won't shed a tear. I think we can reach a compromise with Tuck that won't offend him or hurt us cap-wise.

Should be a fun few months.

The DL is an absolute strength
Beason in the middle is the guy we needed
I thought the DB's when healthy also looked good.

pass rush; another good LB and another NFL quality starting CB.
DT are fine (better with Linval of course); safeties are very good.
Of course they all say they want to come back & want TC back

Who in their right mind would say anything else?!! Burn all bridges with the team & HC before they know if the fate of the HC and if the team is interested?!!!

I'm not saying they're lying, but what kind of stupid question/quote are those?!!

Amani Toomer puts one on Tuck...

Oh, boy.
I think it comes down to playing against good teams vs.
yatqb : 12/29/2013 6:13 pm : link
playing against really crappy teams. Tuck, and most everyone else, played well against crap teams. The one thing I'd say as an argument against that hypothesis is that the entire defense played better once Beason arrived, and I don't think that's coincidental or totally attributable to the level of competition we faced.

Sphinx... that was not intended towards you, but the beat writers who ask those questions and think its worth reporting.

Its like the question for TC in the post game presser about coming back... what idiot asked that?!! They think he's going to tell the media he wants to quit before ownership, or conversely he risks saying he wants back only to be fired a few days later!!
Winners and Losers today
Jeffrey : 12/29/2013 6:20 pm : link
Winners: Jernigan, McBride, Hillis
Losers: Nicks and Brown .
In Nicks case the problem is more what Jernigan did than any poor play by Nicks. Brown has some fumbles this year that combined with his injury history make him a bigger risk.

As bad as that sounds, I think there's some truth to it. Thats why I'd be very cautious bringing him back despite having a very good year overall.

At the right price yes, but I think he's put himself out of Giants price range. Letting a guy walk a year too early better than a year too late scenario... I dont think Tuck can repeat such a year with his injury history.

GloryDayz : 12/29/2013 6:28 pm : link
Giants are better than the shitty teams they beat, but not good enough to beat playoffs teams, not to mention got blown by contenders like Seahawks.

I dont think there's a big difference between their record and ability or draft position... it all evens out.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 12/29/2013 6:43 pm : link
1) I hope Diehl comes to the conclusion on his own that it is time to retire.

2) Jernigan played his way into a roster spot for next year, and possibly an expanded role. Could his play impact the decision on Nicks?

3) Joseph and Beason must be re-signed on D. Both are essential.

4) I would like to have Tuck return, but only at a very cap friendly deal.

this team has a "strength", as someone suggested (in reference to LJ and the DL), is ludicrous. There are no areas of strength on this team. It is the worst Giants team I have watched in more than fifty years.

There is no way this season was anywhere near as bad as the "fumble "

Did you sleep through the 70's?

And the DL run defense is absolutely a strength - take a look at the stats of some of the RB opponents....
This season was no where near as bad as

explaining my feelings later, but that was a terrific coaching job to take a clearly undermanned and hurting team at 0-6 and come out with 7 wins. Of course, how they got to 0-6 is a problem, but everything after that was a great job.

They caught the Lions in a tailspin lost to any decent team they met. Beating crappy teams and losing to decent teams is what mediocre teams do best. It wasn't a great coaching job, just a reflection of the order of the schedule, tough up front, easy on the backside.

Many teams rolled over this season. The Giants, with the worst stay in the league did not despite not having the houses to complete with the best teams in the league. Perspective.

Giants averaged 83.3 rushing yards, their lowest season-long average since they rushed for 76.9 yards a game in 1945.

Tom Rock ‏@TomRock_Newsday 5m
... The last NFL team with at least nine defeats, all against teams .500 or better, was the 2009 Chicago Bears, who also finished 7-9.

Tom Rock ‏@TomRock_Newsday 5m
All 9 of the Giants losses were to teams that finished .500 or better, the first time thats happened since their 5-11 season in 1995 ...

The Giants were one of four teams this season to have its longest run by a receiver; the others were St. Louis, Cleveland and Green Bay.

Tom Rock ‏@TomRock_Newsday 55s
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Jernigans 49-yard touchdown run was the longest by a Giants wide receiver since the 1970 merger.

Nice win today. Always good to beat Washington

However, this was a shitty season, to say the least. Gilbride's playcalling sucked and he should go but Reese is the biggest culprit. This team was not talented enough to contend (see the Seattle, KC and Carolina games). A significant overhaul, especially on the offensive line and at the skill positions, is required to turn us into a contender again.

Pugh is the only keeper on the OL and a gigantic investment must be made to protect Eli. The fact that Eli got a high ankle sprain is a blessing in disguise because that hit could have broken his ankle and it clearly illustrated the awful job Reese did with the offensive line in replacing Snee, Diehl, O'Hara, and Seubert.

The skill positions are also not good enough. Nicks will get his $8-9 million from another team; he didn't play like a #1 receiver to say the least, so he's gone. Cruz is a good receiver but not a #1; Randle will have to replace Nicks, and I still don't buy Jernigan as an effective option; where was he in games that mattered? We'll also have to draft a receiver high. The RB position without Wilson is also a huge hole. Neither Brown nor Hillis are every down backs and we can't assume Wilson will ever play again due to the spinal stenosis issue. The Giants will have to scout RB very carefully this time around

Lastly, all the offensive coaches and Quinn (special teams) have to go; I'd consider bringing Fewell back but if a better DC shakes loose you could just let his contract expire. If TC decides he can't accept a new offensive coordinator then we have to go in another direction for the head coach too, and I love TC
I don't know how many negative runs we had
Jimmy Googs : 12/29/2013 8:26 pm : link
this season, but it must just be an immense number. We had so many defenders across the LOS in every single game it was basically comical. I pray to God for some new offensive lineman next season.

It is over and kudos to the guys on the field in the second half today b/c on a cold, rainy day with nothing to play for the Giants held their heads up high.

bc4life : 12/29/2013 8:40 pm : link
defense played fairy well. with the exception of Carolina, San Diego - they were in most games this season and it was for the most part because of the defense.

and, you cannot play defense an entire game without an offense to hold up their end of the bargain.

Giants tanked as high as 8th versus the run this year - 3rd string qb had nothing to do with that.
It ain't over till it's over ...
Fpbflppt : 12/29/2013 9:07 pm : link
So it begins:

Who's the starting O-line: Pugh and 4 guys named "Who".
Who's the starting tight end: Somebody named "Anybody but him".
Starting at running back: Ike Donnough.
Starting quarterback: Eli Summore

On defense, we have:
D-line: Linval, Hankin, Damontre (offside) Moore and JPP back?
Linebackers: Beason, Williams and who?
D-backs: Prince, Antrel?, Hill, Stevie, Tremaine?

And special team that know how to cover punts and kicks?

Coaches:

Head Case: Tom Coughlin?
Defensive Co-ordinator: Tom Landry (snicker)
Offensive Co-ordinator: Vince Lombardi (another snicker)
Note: both Landry and Lombardi were defensive and offensive coaches for the Giants. Both have passed away - but would have done a better job than the knuckleheads currently in those positions. "We have a complex system but not the personnel to execute it" - and neither co-ordinator would "adjust the system to the personnel".
Special Teams Co-ordinator: "Anybody but the guy we have now"
Quarterbacks Coach: "Anybody but the guy we have now". Phil Simms? (nah, if Phil could coach it, wouldn't his kids have been better at it?)
