Interesting Mara comment re OC

Reale01 : 1/9/2014 5:02 pm
Mike asked if they would select one this week. Mara said no but they have publicly announced several interviews that have been set up. Interestingly, he went on to say that they may want to set up "a couple more". This made me think they might be interested in a coach on a team that is still playing. Maybe I am reading too much into it. If not, any thoughts on who it might be?
They could be waiting for Norv Turner

to become available once a new head coach is hired in Cleveland. Maybe they want to interview someone like Frank Reich who is the QB coach with SD.

said they could be interviewing all these guys as a potential HC too. If Tommy retires

lol, Tommy's gonna outlive them all
I think it was rumored that
robbieballs2003 : 1/9/2014 5:09 pm : link
we are interested in Carmichael. I don't know how that would work though since he already has that label with New Orleans.

I think Carmichael's contract ends at the end of the season.

robbieballs2003 : 1/9/2014 5:10 pm : link
that is not always true though. The week is too busy. Coaches will be more open to interviewing if they had a bye week. I don't know any coaches that go on interviews during game week.
Take your time

the guy McAdoo refused to sign a contract extension with the Packers. Because they wouldn't let him interview for OC gigs. wow
A surprise
TMS : 1/9/2014 5:14 pm : link
announcement of Tom Coughlin retiring before next season ? They could accomplish the whole transition with these interviews: New HC, new OC, new QB coach. We know every one else is staying. Make it even more interesting if Snee and Diehl leave with TC as well.
I think it's Carmichael.
yatqb : 1/9/2014 5:14 pm : link
Seems like we're looking at primarily younger guys, so I wonder whether Turner is even under consideration.

I like that they are taking their time. I just hope they don't take too much time and lose out on someone we want because another team swooped in and offered him the job first. Gruden just got hired in Washington. O'Brien is in Houston. They have to start filling their coaching staff in.
Carmichael

as OC and coach in waiting? I could see that
What is with the obsession
robbieballs2003 : 1/9/2014 5:35 pm : link
with the Head Coach in Waiting possibility? Do you guys honestly think that the Giants are going to commit to a HC-ing candidate now? What if this whole team goes 0-16 next year? I really don't get it. Also, has a HC in waiting ever worked?
would be a big mistake
BigK : 1/9/2014 5:37 pm : link
To hire someone as the coach in waiting before seeing how they perform as OC
I think they are waiting to talk to Carmichael
Blue Blood : 1/9/2014 5:37 pm : link
as well.
I'm not obsessed with it
Rflairr : 1/9/2014 5:59 pm : link
I don't give a shit one way or the other.

I'm just saying I agree with the beat writer, that they could be looking at their next coach, while their looking for the current OC. And no I don't think the Giants would ever say, the guy is coach in waiting. Nor would they have to.
There's no HC in-waiting save for very
Big Blue '56 : 1/9/2014 6:00 pm : link
few exceptions..The Maras would never do that, certainly not to TC..

If they are indeed waiting for Carmichael, it's about OC postion, period..They'll go from there
I just don't understand

The infatuation with Norv Turner...

Besides being the Offensive Coordinator with the 1992 Dallas Cowboys (whose offense had 8 Pro Bowlers)...what has he done?!

And for what reason has he been classified as an "Offensive Genius"?

Every Job he's received since being the Coordinator for the Cowboys of the 90's has ended HORRIBLY

The only argument you can make for his success was when he inherited a 14-2 team from Marty Schottenheimer and took them to the AFC championship game in 2007

That team, by the way, had 11 pro bowlers the year before

And it's not like he does amazing things with personnel that under performs; look at Cleveland this year and San Francisco in 2006

I'm not sure when this Rumor was started....maybe all the clamoring of Troy Aikman....but Norv Turner is NOT an offensive genius...

and there's no reason to think that he'd do ANYTHING with The Giants
I'm just glad
geemanfan : 1/9/2014 6:10 pm : link
They are doing this right and not just settling on a guy with history .

Did you SEE who was playing quarterback and running back for the Browns this year, and the numbers he coaxed out of that group?

WCO is more of a philosophy than a system.

You are wrong on Turner, he was the OC for both San Fran and San Diego when they lit up the league. The problem is he's a crappy head coach but when he goes back to being an OC his offense lights it up so much that he gets more head coaching gigs which is fails at.

Turner would be an amazing OC.
They can interview a hundred guys if they want to
illmatic : 1/9/2014 6:53 pm : link
and we'll still all be floored if it's anyone but Sullivan. We know how the Giants work.
Taking time is not a problem, it makes all the sense in the world.

Of course I also wish they would have taken more time in
evaluating the special teams situation. What was the rush there to reappoint Quinn?

John Mara said on WFAN there could be more OC candidates. 2 names my followers begging for: Saints OC Carmichael, QB coach Lombardi #NYG

Are we sure Carmichael's contract is up though?

His contract came up last year. He was only given a one year deal? I keep seeing people saying his contract is up.

I have always been intrigued by Pete Carmichael. His name was thrown in here around mid 2011 when Coughlin's job was in trouble (by BBI). When sporting his glasses on the sideline, he does remind me of a young Tom Coughlin.

Rooney rule precludes them from hiring a HC in waiting anyway

Don't totally dismiss
fkap : 1/10/2014 11:46 am : link
the notion of HC in waiting. TC is getting up there in age. It makes perfect sense to consider whether the new OC is potential head coach material. I agree that it's not Giants MO to formalize an agreement that the OC will step up when TC steps down. But it is their MO to stay within the family. Which makes more sense: hire a guy who you wouldn't consider to step up, or hire a guy who you think could become the next HC? You don't have to promise him the job, just dangle the carrot of possibility. The underlying presumption is that the new team will be successful, and when TC finally hangs it up, there'll be someone on the staff who will be able to take over. If there's no success, it doesn't matter, because everyone is going into the trash and we're starting anew.

The only good thing about San Fran's 2006 offense under Norv Turner was Frank Gore. He was great, totaling well over 2000 yards rushing & receiving. I definitely wouldn't say they lit the league up.

Also, I don't believe he was ever OC of the Chargers. He took over for Schottenheimer as head coach and the Chargers have been on a downhill decline ever since... well, ever since they got a new head coach.

I'll pass on Norv Turner for the Giants.

whoever is available currently as a possible OC candidate. However, unless someone new blows them away my money is still on Sullivan, especially if Eli has any input at all in the evaluation process (and I expect he may have a little).

Nick in LA : 1/11/2014 2:29 am : link
may want to leave his current situation for one where he has more control of the offense. We all know it is Paytons system and Payton calls the plays. At least with the Giants he would be able to (almost) do whatever he wants. I like the idea. I am not patient enough for this though haha. I want to know now!
