Linval Joseph latest tweet

@LinvalJoseph: I want to be back with the Giants next year! This where it all started just want to take care of my family and put on that BLUE every Sunday

Just passing it along.
Hoping the Giants feel the same.

L.J. Rebuilding starts in the pit, both sides of it. Me thinks resigning L.J. and letting him assume the leadership role, vacated by the departure of Tuck, is a big step in the right direction. I believe our blue chip tackle is right In front of us, and there is no questioning his loyalty, nor his work ethic. Great Giant teams had blue chip tackles: Martin, Burt, Howard, Hammer. L.J. Is cut from the same dye, as the aforementioned, & I hope he is able to don Blue for many more Sunday's.

just want to take care of my family = I wanna get paid as much as possible, and that trumps my desire to return in blue.

Even players who are well known not to have any particular fondness for a team typically say they want to come back.

All in all, a comment that says nothing new. He may, or may not, really want to come back. He wants to get paid big bucks.
The only way he'll be back
RetroJint : 2/15/2014 8:20 am : link
is if he gets disappointing offers on the market. The Giants are in a passive position right now. Given their enormous needs at other positions they are not going to be a factor for very long if Joseph commands strong interest.
Let him go. Yes it hurts, he's a good young player.

want vs need
fkap : 2/15/2014 8:40 am : link
The Giants highly value the DL, and LJ is a huge part of that line. However, they could arguably survive if they don't re-sign LJ.

What the Giants NEED is an OL, and they NEED Beason, and they have borderline needs pretty much everywhere.

They have to be very, very careful about deciding where to put their limited resources. They very much WANT to retain LJ, but the asking price is the deciding factor because they don't need him so much that they'll diminish the team elsewhere in order to pay too much for LJ.

Quite a few of you still don't understand how the cap works or how contracts allocate dollars towards specific years.

The Giants have a healthy amount of cap space and an insane amount of space next season. Those preaching/guessing "the right price" clearly have no clue how easy it would be to sign Joseph to a huge contract and still be able to afford others while drafting OL.

Big Rick in FL : 2/15/2014 9:33 am : link
Why do you think the Panthers will go after him? Makes absolutely no sense for them. They just drafted Star Lotulelei in the first and Kawann Short in the 2nd round last year. Both played very well.

Sounds to me like he is saying he will play for less than people are expecting. He wants to take care of his family AND play for the Giants so as long as the offer is not insulting, he would choose the Giants over a bigger payday. This sounds crazy since all you here about are the players that chase the dollar signs but there are a ton of players out there that look at things other than money for motivation. Uprooting your family and moving to another state is not desirable in any situation when you have to worry about stability for your children. Having to move, learn a new system and leave the team that you care about for a few more dollars in your pocket may not be as attractive as it has been in the past. Plus L.J. Is right in the eye if the storm where team mates Mario Manningham, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss, Kenny Philips, Ahmad Bradshaw, Chris Canty and Brandon Jacobs all disappeared almost completely after leaving the Giants. I'm sure Jacobs came back and told the whole team how he felt about his situation. Not everyone is going to look at it that way, but I'm sure there are a few that are looking at the bigger picture and dropping anchor in the place they want to be rather than chasing the dollar. I think Linval is one of them.

Thanks for that summation. Hope you are right and we keep Joseph. It is senseless to keep drafting players and then letting them leave when they demonstrate they have developed into solid performers. The point of this process is to identify core players and keep them. Joseph is one of those for us. Tried and true and only getting better.

He was such a difference maker that we drafted his replacement in the last draft. Like I said, he is solid. But it's not like he is a top 10 at his position.
I agree.....
Doomster : 2/15/2014 11:45 am : link
LJ is a solid player, but he is not even remotely a "force" in the middle of the DL.....you make him an offer, and he either accepts/rejects it.....

YOU DO NOT EXTEND ELI OR ROLLE, to sign this guy....in fact, you don't extend them for any reason.....to do so, only continues down the road of cap armageddon .....

How long does the front office think it will take for this team to be a contender.....I'm not talking about winning the NFC East(which is not saying much), I'm talking about be a contender that can go far into the playoffs...
I'm really sick of "I just need to take care of my family" nonsense
Jacobs27 : 2/15/2014 11:48 am : link
Every offer this guy and just about every other athlete who uses the phrase gets will be plenty to "take care of their family." It's funny how many of these guys take care of their families by buying $100K sports cars and spending $25K on a night out at the club.

I really don't care how they spend their money and certainly don't begrudge them their right to go for the highest dollar. Just stop with the sanctimonious bullshit about taking care of your family. I would love it if just one athlete came out and said I'm gong to the highest bidder and that's that.

Thank you. I've been making the same point for a while now.

The best thing you can say about Linval Joseph is that he's young, but can you honestly say he's going to get better as he gets older? To me, that's wishful thinking. He is what he is, an above-average DT, and that's what he most likely always will be. Let some other team pay him big money on the off-chance that he becomes an All-Pro someday. The Giants have bigger fish to fry.

Some of you act like it's Linval Joseph or nothing. It's not. The Giants usually carry four DTs. Last year they carried five. Right now they have three on the roster - Jenkins, Hankins, and Kuhn - and Kuhn is hardly a lock to make the team. There are 30+ DTs who are UFAs this year, and while age and injury history will no doubt cross a bunch of them off of the Giants' list, about a half-dozen would look okay in blue and probably come a lot cheaper than Joseph.

As for the draft, while I don't think the Giants will draft a DT this year unless someone they really covet falls to them unexpectedly, it's not like the 2014 draft will be the last one held. FYI, there's a draft every year, and if the Giants elect to go with Hankins and a bunch of veterans this year, they could certainly look for an infusion of young talent next year.
Nt to millar the thread...

but isn't it time the salary caps were raised? I'm tired of good players being forced out of the team they were drafted by due to salary caps. I get that this is business but think about the money these teams are making. Just ridiculous.
Giant John
River Mike : 2/15/2014 1:06 pm : link
It won't make any difference. If the cap is raised it will just allow other teams to offer even more money to throw at our FAs. Its how you manage the cap relative to other teams rather than how much money is allotted to all the teams

can watch Hankins and Kuhn, and their combined 75 career snaps, get pushed around by every other NFC East team next season.

Jenkins and Patterson will be exhausted by halftime (or worse injured) since they are only like 62 years old each.

On the field together. This two alone can clog up the middle. Leaving Beason to play downhill and fast. But that would make too much sense.

How many draft picks on DTs since Coffield left? Jenkins can at DT and DE. Patterson is a good backup and will probably be cheap. The better the DL the less pressure on the DBs. Meanwhile it frees up the DEs for on on ones.

This is Fewells system and besides the OL being such a mess this one should be at the top of Resses list.
Looks like people are declaring that he's not a difference-maker
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/15/2014 3:27 pm : link
because x player doesn't have stats.

He's a nose tackle. He won't HAVE stats. His job is holding up double teams and stuffing the run. He does it well, and he's 24-25 years old.

The difference that he makes is allowing Beason and the DEs to play one on one or run free. That doesn't show up in a box score.

Sonic Youth : 2/15/2014 3:43 pm : link
He's definitely worth a Cofield type contract. I wouldn't give him as much as we gave Canty, but he's a big enough part of the team, and him and Hankins in the middle would be a force.

Also, from what I understand, we actually DO have some cap room to play with. I think we're going to mostly address OL in the draft, maybe 1 FA OL.. so I don't think signing Joseph will preclude us from resigning Beason or singing an OL.
The Giants

No, I am sure its not impossible Klaatu.

But who would that be that does what he does, isn't so old that we have to deal with this again next season and would materially cheaper?

I am all in for a good cheap DT with experience, but didn't know the availability list was so long.

available, but last year we found 3 guys who made the team at DT , one at $2M and 2 at about $1M. Plus the very large Frank Okum who got cut near the end. So if it's been done before, it's probably doable again. If Kuhn has some value that would be a pleasant surprise. I haven't seen it yet. But I don't think Joseph is a game changer. He holds his ground in the middle, but I don't see him being double teamed very often like a Wilfork. I'd pay maybe $3.5 tops to keep him.

Jenkins, Patterson and Rogers. But that value was driven by the fact that they are all fairly old and managed to stay healthy for us which is rare. Do we want to really keep dipping into free agency each season to find a DT rotation?

I don't recall we chatted about this before, but nevertheless I saw this list before. I don't see really that many names that impress as a 2-down stuffer, not alone a 2-down stuffer that can actually get QB pressures every now and then.

My biggest problem is that we shouldn't be finding a new DT rotation every season. I feel we were fortunate to get Jenkins last season, but he is likely done after 2014. Both Patterson and Rogers provide some nice snaps as well but took up 2 roster spots in limited duty and are not reliable even for next season. Kuhn is really just an inexperienced big body.
Sometimes all you need is solid players
GMANinDC : 2/16/2014 3:35 pm : link
who know their roles to win games. No need to have the "top layer or difference maker" on certain positions. I look at difference makers as QB's, WR's, CB's and DE's. Those are the skill sets that need to have a top player.

DT's are relatively unknown forces that take on blockers and clog gaps. Not a glorious position. LJ can do both which makes him asset..

It seems the some tend to forget how the DL falters after losing good DT's like Griffin and Cofield. Who wants to go another few years and many draft picks or FA signing to get the right guy?..

4/3 defense DT has often been the dominant position on the good teams not DE. I think DE is over rated here. Look back at the dominant 4/3 defenses and you will see DT as the main position creating the problems not the DEs. Thev nose tackle in the 3/4 defense is primarily a space eater, but not in the 4/3. Teams went to the 3/4 because they could not find enough big mobile guys to man a 4/3. We have two (Joseph, Hankins) now, lets keep them right here.
