Snee to retire this week?

Headhunter : 2/21/2014 7:34 am
Veteran guard David Diehl has retired and one-time stalwart Chris Snee could follow him as early as this week.

Would his retiring help the Giants cap more than his being cut

Retiring and being cut work the same way from a cap standpoint.
Depending on timing...
Dunedin81 : 2/21/2014 8:07 am : link
I assume it is treated as a pre-June 1st release for cap purposes. If he were to wait until after June 1st it would probably be treated as a post-June 1st release, with the dead money spread out.
He
AcidTest : 2/21/2014 8:08 am : link
should. He's had a hell of a career, including two SBs, and has made a lot of money. He needs to think about his family and future health.
what a rapid

decline of such a very good career
Seems his heart is saying retire
Some Fan : 2/21/2014 8:17 am : link
I think his body shape will completely change in a year like Faneca.
When you're seriously considering retiring
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/21/2014 8:23 am : link
it means you really want to retire.

Ring of Honor?
I think it's time.
arcarsenal : 2/21/2014 8:25 am : link
He's declined rapidly to the point of being below average. It wasn't long ago that he was one of the best guards in football. He had a great career. No sense in holding on now, though.

this is Snee's last year under contract. June 1 means nothing.

it's been a heckuva run for coach's son-in-law; i remember seeing the seahawks game in 2008 at home and he was just a menacing run blocker. made the most of his talent.
If he does indeed retire

Let me be the first to say that he deserves the BBI Trophy
He just isn't much of a player anymore
Greg from LI : 2/21/2014 9:03 am : link
Injuries are a bitch. It wasn't too long ago he was one of the top 3 or 4 guards in football.
He could have made a bid for Hall of Fame
Ten Ton Hammer : 2/21/2014 9:11 am : link
had he stayed healthy.

He had just gotten to the point where he was making First Team All-Pro on an annual basis before he began to slide. It's really too bad.

There's no June 1 benefit with Snee since it's the final year of his deal.
That is alot of $ to just give up
Chef : 2/21/2014 9:14 am : link
If true, I think it might have went something like this

Reese: Chris, please retire so when we cut you it does not look so bad that we cut the Son In Law of our Head Coach.
I think that Snee
Jay on the Island : 2/21/2014 9:34 am : link
will decide to retire because he realized that it is not worth putting his body through another year of football while taking a substantial pay cut.
what if Snee
Dnew : 2/21/2014 9:35 am : link
feels like he's got a year left..or atleast wants to give a go for one more year...and agrees to a straight pay cut...how would that impact that cap?
I know guys don't often do that, but if anyone were to do so...I think Snee would be the guy.
Would it (cap-wise) just function as a player cut and resign so the cap situation (damage) would look the same?

It would function as a pay cut. His cap number now is $11.3 million for the 2014 season---that's 2nd on the team to Eli's cap # of $20.4 million. It won't happen though. He won't be on this team next season. Bet the farm on it.
Optimus,
Randy in CT : 2/21/2014 9:43 am : link
is there any way to rework his contract, pre-retirement, where it is beneficial to both sides? Or at this point, it is what it is? (ginormous cap hit)
That's what I was getting at Randy
Dnew : 2/21/2014 9:50 am : link
Thanks..Snee's not making that money anyway, so why not renegotiate (take a pay cut) the contract before retiring so that the Giants don't have to take such a big hit?
It's totally shady...
Dnew : 2/21/2014 9:52 am : link
and I'm sure the players union would have a hissy-fit...but are there rules/policies in place to prevent such a move?
there isn't anything you can do
Sneakers O'toole : 2/21/2014 9:54 am : link
if he retires, his salary disappears. It's the dead money that you pay. You can't do anything about dead money. It's already been paid tot he player, now it has to be accounted for against the cap. There is nothing that can be done with it.
Snee is
TMS : 2/21/2014 10:30 am : link
following the pattern of O'Hara. Seubert, and now Diehl. Get all your surgeries done while you are still on the payroll then retire. Good luck to him, he was a warrior as were the others. Great memories. The article leads me to believe that Evans gets a long look if he is there at #12. Another Plaxico like talent is what ELI really needs.
It's a bit sad when a very very good player
DG : 2/21/2014 10:30 am : link
like Snee loses his productivity so quickly due to injury. I imagine Steeler fans have similar feelings about Polamalu.

It's one thing i really don't like about football.
Got ya..
Dnew : 2/21/2014 10:34 am : link
Thanks Sneakers...I didn't realize that the "Dead Money" was money already paid to the player...is that a result of the re-structuring they did with Snee's contract through the years?
Dead money is the remaining portions of the signing bonuses
BeerFridge : 2/21/2014 10:40 am : link
that have been spread out over the length of the contract. So, you give a guy a 10Mill signing bonus on a 5 yr deal, and the bonus is spread out cap wise for 2 mill a year. If you cut him in year 3 (or he retires), the bonuses for the last two years are counted against this year's cap, so year 3,4 and 5 have 2 million and his bonus counts 10 million against the cap.

It protects against teams giving outrageous bonuses on really long contracts they never intend to fulfill.
The thing I took from that article
JoefromPa : 2/21/2014 10:41 am : link
more than the idea that Snee might retire, is that the Giants couldn't have timed the rebuilding of their offense any better.

With six solid picks, they can rebuild that offensive line and get Eli another Plaxico.

Reading that made me think the Giants can rebuild very quickly, makes me optimistic for next season.

Only thing standing in the way of getting back on track, would be a poor draft by the Giants. If the experts are correct, the talent is there for the Giants to rebuild in a hurry.
Dead money is dead money
Mike in NY : 2/21/2014 10:43 am : link
But if he takes a straight pay cut and then you stash him on IR for the year he at least gets paid and the cap hit in terms of dead money will be less next year, the Giants would have this offseason to plan for the fact that they will have the dead money next year, and Snee gets paid more than he would have by just retiring this year
Mike...
Dnew : 2/21/2014 11:18 am : link
I don't think that there's a scenerio in which that kind of move would be mutually beneficial...that was the route I was trying to bring the conversation...but since the "dead money" represents money already payed to the player as a way to spread out guaranteed money, there isn't a way in which Snee could benefit by straight taking a pay cut - it would only benefit the Giants. Something I doubt he would be inclined to do.
And BTW...
Dnew : 2/21/2014 11:25 am : link
Snee was a great Giant..unquestionably one of the center-pieces of their multiple Super Bowl runs...just trying to exploit his current contract status to benefit the Giants long term :)
Mike, there is no dead money right now for 2015
YAJ2112 : 2/21/2014 11:28 am : link
2014 is the last year of Snee's contract.
Dnew
Mike in NY : 2/21/2014 11:31 am : link
Snee has been paid his bonus but his salary for this year is not guaranteed. If he retires or is cut outright he does not receive this year's salary. If he cuts his salary to a figure that is agreeable to the Giants with the understanding that he would be stashed on IR the Giants get cap savings this year in the form of the difference in salary, Chris Snee makes more money than if he retired, and next year the prorated portion of the signing bonus is less

Sorry, misinterpreted how Eric lists the contracts and thought there was one year after this season on his contract
Wow, a lot of misinformation here....
Doomster : 2/21/2014 12:09 pm : link
Even if cut after June 1, you can't split his dead money over two years, because he is in the last year of his contract....

Why in the world would the Giants, have him take a pay cut, and then IR him? It's like paying him to retire....

Right now, he is an 11.3M cap hit, with 4.5M of that being dead money....

So if cut/retires, that gives the Giants 6.8M to use for his replacement....let's say they sign a guy at vet min of 1M, for a one year deal....this will be Snee's replacement for one year....this gives them 5.8M to use towards signing their own free agents like Beason or LJ.....

If for some reason, Snee still wants to play, and is willing to take a one year deal, at say 2M, he stays on the team, and the team now has 4.8M to use on their own free agents or a free agent not on the team......the 4.5M in dead money, still will count against the total cap, but will be off the books for 2015...
Is Article Misleading?
Samiam : 2/21/2014 12:35 pm : link
Snee could retire this week or next week or next monh or next year. What is the article saying that is real news? I havent read anyithing from Snee or the Giants that speaks to his current medical condition or his intentions. I've seen alot of soeculation; someone here wrote something to th efffect that they know someone who goes to his gym or knows Snee personally and Snee said he would retire. But, I also read something that Snee said that he doesnt know. And,with that much dead money if he is cut, who knows what Reese is thinking? Key question for me is Snee's medical condition and his iand the team's intention.
sorry...
Dnew : 2/21/2014 12:57 pm : link
totally my fault..I didn't understand the dead money thing...now I do...lesson learned.
There is nothing in that article
barens : 2/21/2014 3:36 pm : link
That remotely confirms Snee is close to retiring. I understand the pay cut, but playing elsewhere he'd have to at least see a decent contract to pick up and go.
not according to this
BeerFridge : 2/21/2014 3:38 pm : link
INDIANAPOLIS – Despite a second hip surgery in as many seasons, Chris Snee is building himself back up with the intention of playing in 2014, according to head coach Tom Coughlin.

Sure. A paycut to the veteran minimum for a player with Snee's accrued years (10 years). A player with 10 accrued seasons earns $955 K in 2014; however, with the Minimum Salary Benefit Rule, his cap number would only be $635 K.
why would you cut
Sneakers O'toole : 2/21/2014 3:48 pm : link
a salary per-retirement? That's pointless. Randy was asking about Snee retiring. The salary goes poof if the player retires. Lowering it doesn't do anything.
Now
Sneakers O'toole : 2/21/2014 3:49 pm : link
if Snee wishes to continue playing, you probably would have to give him an ultimatum, pay cut or bye bye.
...
SanFranGiantsFan : 2/21/2014 4:25 pm : link
Play totally fell of a cliff, primarily due to injuries. Great Giant.
not that the Giants would do it
fkap : 2/21/2014 4:26 pm : link
but I'm guessing you could extend him so that the dead money can be spread out, then cut him. Not sure if you can roll 2014 dead money into a new contract year (2015), but if it's permissable, you could even the cap hit over two years that way.

As always, I have to add that I am absolutely against borrowing from future years cap. It sounds great this year, and then hurts you next year.
Well, then,
Doomster : 2/21/2014 6:05 pm : link
"He's progressing well, he's working, he's building himself up," Coughlin said. "He's feeling good and he's looking forward to feeling better. So all I can tell you is that he's made very good progress."

You offer him a pay cut....not 6.8M......If Reese pays him 6.8M, he should be fired.....
Snee should have been cut last year
oipolloi : 2/21/2014 6:46 pm : link
He put off having surgery to vacation with his family in Hawaii and then was PUP at the beginning of camp.

His heart was already not in it.

You think Snee would have put off surgery in his first or second year or in college to go on vacation? No way.

And I don't blame Snee. I blame the Giants. When you draft a son-in-law of the HC, you have to have a plan for how to deal with that time in a career when the guy is no longer worth big money. Reese and the Giants bungled the situation about as much as you can.
