"First rule of thumb when reading/listening to these NFL Combine pressers: NO ONE is going to reveal what they are truly thinking regarding the draft. So if a GM says they're not in the market for a certain position, they're not being truthful because EVERY GM is looking to improve his football club and no position should be excluded in that process."

"I also think it's dangerous to assume that the Giants will only tap into Green Bay's roster to fill a lot of their FA needs. Not saying they won't look there, but there are plenty of other options available on other teams at the various positions that are just as much worth a look."

Ralph Vacchianoþ@RVacchianoNYDN·

"Think Hakeem Nicks is destined for Carolina? GM Dave Gettleman didn't sound like he's in the WR market "First of all, any wide receiver right now is still under contract," Gettleman said earlier today at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. "One of the things I learned a long time ago is often times the answer is on your roster. Nobody ever imagined we'd take (defensive tackle) Nate Chandler, turn him around, make him an offensive guard, and he'd start nine games
for us. And we'd be 7-2 in those nine games. When I was with the Giants, none of us came out of camp in 2011 and expected Victor Cruz to have that kind of year.

"Before you run around and panic, we've had these young kids with us. We signed Marvin McNutt, claimed Tavarres King. We have two kids on our practice squad, Brenton Bersin and De'Andre Presley. So before you panic, look at your roster, trust your evaluation process, a lot of times the answer's right there."

"Strong words of praise for new Cowboys (and former Giants) TE coach Mike Pope from Jason Garrett: “Mike Pope is a great football coach,” Garrett, the Cowboys head coach, said at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis yesterday. “ I had the good fortune of being around him for four years with the Giants and he’s really as good a coach as I’ve been around in my career. I saw him up close and personal with a lot of different guys, established players and young players and he’s a great friend, he’s a great addition to our staff …To add Mike Pope to the mixand having a different perspective on how he gets coached, I think (Jason Witten is) really excited, and I know Mike Pope is as well.

“(Pope) and I have had a long relationship. I think the world of him. I can go in my office right now and pull out his Saturday night tip sheet for the tight ends for four years with the Giants that I would fall asleep with in my bed that was 25 pages long and in Pope’s handwriting. He and I have known each other a long time. He’s a great coach. His track record speaks for itself. He’s worked with different kinds of tight ends, veteran tight ends, he’s worked with young guys, he’s developed guys who were college free agents. The fact that we have an investment in (Gavin) Escobar and have a young guy in James Hanna, we feel those guys will benefit but Witt’s going to benefit as well.”

When the Giants improve the OL, Eli better return to form.

By this time next season, I'm betting it's either Eli extension time or a new QB.

Eli - 2 SBs
Chipper - 1 world series

Eli > Chipper.
Chipper consistently hit the first baseman on the run.

Eli can't hit the check down.
With the expected cap increase to $130 million

of the more curious moves was swapping firing Pope and moving Gilbride Jr. to TEs coach. Unless Pope is losing it.
Pope is in his 70s, right?

I really wish I knew what the thinking was there.

My theory on this was that McAdoo might want to split up the installations between assistants, as they do in GB. In that case, long time specialist assistants like Ingram and Pope might not be well suited to that responsibility.
Fixed it for you.

I know 2006-2011 is just a blank time period in your mind. Eli won 2 SBs during that time period.

Maybe part of the reasoning behind those moves was for the coaching staff to get younger? Just thinking out loud. Sacking Pope was a head scratcher.

Don't have a dog in this race, but you do know that Braves fans are all about the playoffs, right? Winning the WS is overrated, just ask Bobby Cox. Tried it once, didn't particularly care for it apparently.

NO ONE Thinks this. What a waste of characters...
Plenty of BBIers did exactly that
JonC : 2/21/2014 1:02 pm : link
Some potential targets might be reasonable, but Finley isn't one of them.
Agree with Optimus
ZogZerg : 2/21/2014 1:03 pm : link
Plus, our new OC was a TE coach. I'm guessing he wants things done his way with the TEs and he figured that would be easier to accomplish using Gilbride.
IIRC, Finley was such a "hot" topic of discussion because
Riggies : 2/21/2014 1:06 pm : link
Rolle publicly championed him and talked about recruiting him.

It's not like BBI/Giants coverage just focused on him randomly or because he was a Packer.
It started before that with Finley
JonC : 2/21/2014 1:10 pm : link
and there were other quick targets : their Center, the RB, Kuhn, to name but a few.

Coughlin told me "forget about the fact that David Wilson could be a difference-maker" for Giants. Question is whether he can withstand hits
And that's Natural speculation when you sign a coach or GM from
ZogZerg : 2/21/2014 1:19 pm : link
another team. Folks do it all the time with teams - and why, because the new team usually signs a player or two from the previous team.

Again, NO ONE on BBI thought the Giants were ONLY targeting GB players.

i thought it was to get younger
nygiants1114 : 2/21/2014 1:22 pm : link
and not have same faces, and the fact that Mcadoo is a TE Coach. I also think the KG retirement/firing had something to do with retaining his son. All orgs do that.

Still eating 15% of the cap. Lot of pressure on Eli this year. No extension and the cash now that goes with it is hardly a vote of confidence.
Good to hear TC's not wanting to stand pat with DW

Almost every other question I get on Twitter is which Packers do I see the Giants targeting. I rarely see questions about other free agents another teams. What's obvious to you and others isn't always obvious to everyone.

given the level of success they've had together, but another bad season could leave the Giants without Coughlin or Eli in 2015.

Jamal Charles is a smaller, very fast and agile runner who is also a special teams weapon.

They both ran track in college.
They both have pass protection as a key weakness.
They both have injury concerns.
The skillsets are similar.
There's no reason to be offended by the comparison.
Is this really a make or break season for Eli?
BillKo : 2/21/2014 2:18 pm : link
What constitutes make or break?

Bringing in competition?

Cutting him?

Pay cut?
Jamaal Charles has pass protection as a clear weakness?
AnotherGiantsFan : 2/21/2014 2:20 pm : link
You clearly pulled that out of your ass. His pass protecting is certainly not a weakness. He gets his hands dirty.
Funny what two months of an off season can do.....
BillKo : 2/21/2014 2:21 pm : link
I've read Wilson compared to:

1. Barry Sanders
2. Shady McCoy
3. Jamaal Charles

here's one difference:

Jamal Charles has 4 1000 yard rushing seasons..How can you compare Wilson to a guy who has done actually starred in the NFL to someone with "potential"??

apparently....
BillKo : 2/21/2014 2:51 pm : link
Wilson "hit his stride" in the Eagles game because he scored.......then promptly got hurt.

Who would have thunk it?
Why do people assume that because Mcadoo was TE Coach
sweeneys4421 : 2/21/2014 3:16 pm : link
he has any affinity towards TE's or making them a bigger part of the offense? I know that none of you have actually played football before but position coach is a job not a lifestyle. Ben Mcadoo will have his own offensive philosophy he just worked as a TE/QB coach under Mike Macarthy. Same goes for the assumtion that he will want to bring over all GB FA...Jones/Finley/Kuhn. First of all he is not the GM or HC, second of all its obvious that none of the coaches liked Finley...he was inconsistant and always hurt. As far as James Jones goes, if Mcadoo had a choice he would perfer the best player available. It is not dificult to learn an offense, especially as WR.

With a 20 million dollar cap hit and the Giants unwilling or uninterested on lowering that by extending him, I think it's a big time make or break season for Eli. We could look to move on after the season if he has another year like last.(I don't believe that he will)

SanFranGiantsFan : 2/21/2014 4:24 pm : link
Big year for Eli. But I'm confident with an adequate OL, some healthy RB, & a competent TE, he'll bounce back.
Mind melting pick
Maineline : 2/21/2014 4:55 pm : link
If we grab a QB with one of the first two draft picks that would really inject some life in the BBI world of speculation.

I'm thinking with that cap number, you're almost forced to keep Eli for at least a few more years.

I can't see the Giants and Eli parting after 2014.

I say forced, although I think he'll rebound to finish his career in NY.

Simple. You compare them on physical traits and physical ability. Not career accomplishments, which I'm pretty sure was the point all along.
