is simply no legitimate football reason for keeping Snee on the roster, even if he takes a massive pay cut a la Corey Webster. He has had several serious hip injuries, is clearly in free fall physically, and did nothing last year except chew up a roster spot. How he feels now is irrelevant. He's 32 with a significant injury history. He's done.
I'd say this is nepotism, and maybe it is at this point, but as someone said, Coughlin was equally loyal to Diehl.
Constant, undying, loyalty to aging, injured, veterans is one of the main reasons (the other being bad drafting) why we are in this position.
Snee, Boothe, and Baas all need to be gone. Tuck as well if he inflates his value, as seems likely. Ross and Webster need to go as well. We thank them all, but it's over.
I like TC but the guy has an $11 mil cap number and he wasn't even a quality reserve last year. Restructure equals extension. Cut him and resign him for the vet minimum? Sure.
is just looking out for his family. What is wrong with that? We have 2 super bowl victories with TC as coach. That should give him 5 more years to do whatever he wants to do....
Tom Coughlin has negotiated since he's been with the Giants have been his own. So much for the nepotism charge unless you think Jerry Reese is some sort of figurehead. He's not. Snee's contract is a similar to Tuck's. They have had similar careers.
As for Chris, he was quoted in the Post awhile back as wanting to see if the Giants still have interest in having him back. I don't have an opinion , other than to say that those decisions are Reese's. It's up to him to get them right. But I don't like Snee being treated like JT Turner or Bill Ellenbogan or somebody like that. Snee has been one of the best guards in Giant history. Some of the same people who wanted Meyers back, are burying Snee. Ridiculous.
is just looking out for his family. What is wrong with that? We have 2 super bowl victories with TC as coach. That should give him 5 more years to do whatever he wants to do....
So the fans who dish out cash for PSLs, full cost for preseason games, etc should watch crap football b/c Coughlin wants his son-inlaw to make money. Gee, i see nothing wrong with that my ass.
Would love Snee to return but only as a dominant guard. Otherwise, EVERYTHING is wrong with this.
The Negativity! The Conspiracy Mentality! The Hate!
Do you MORONS think that Tom Coughlin doesn't want a winning team?
Do you really think that he is so corrupt that he would keep a player that can't play anymore?
This site gets worse by the month!
but he was a valuable contributor. Snee was flat-out awful last year. Snee is not worth $11 mil, at this point he's not really worth a roster spot. If he's coming back for more than the veteran minimum it's an overpay.
... with the 1950s-looking guy with the caption something to the effect of, Not this shit again. Snee has been a shell of himself for two years. Enough already. Great career, but it's time to move on.
what the restructure looks like and how it affects the team cap, before we jump to conclusions once again. The media will be all over this if it smacks of nepotism. Do not think TC, Snee or the front office want that circus in this town.

So you are waving goodbye to Diehl, Boothe, Baas, Snee, Tuck, Webster, and Ross. I'll assume Nicks also. So, two years after the Giants' team won the Super Bowl, you want to get rid of eight starters on that playoff game roster.
Are you sure that in two years they have all lost whatever talent they had. No dropoff due to playing hurt, just having a bad year, playing on a team that lost all its confidence in the first six weeks (losing to teams that turned out to be much better than was known when the Giants played them).
I can't say for sure that you're wrong about them. You might be right. But if you add these players to the starters we lost last off-season, Mckenzie, Bradshaw, Osi, Canty, Boley, Blackburn, Phillips, and Manningham, then that's 16 starters from the Super Bowl winner two years ago who are gone and 16 replacements for them on the field. Never has a Super Bowl champ taken itself apart so fast as these Giants.
There is no way in hell that this almost completely new Giants team is going to take Coughlin back to the Super Bowl in the next year or two. No, we're headed into the dreaded "rebuilding" years.
Who knows whether Snee can come back to form after gettting
If he does it's a short term win for the team. And there's no way that he's not gonna take significant cut in salary if he makes the team.
So it's somewhat of a no-lose situation imo IF we draft/sign a bunch of young offensive linemen and they have some time to develop before one of them takes over for Snee after the year or even during the year.
Now that last is the biggest concern for me -- would TC replace Snee in the starting lineup if someone was practicing better than him. He sure didn't with DD. But that wouldn't be nepotism, just TC's sometimes misplaced loyalty.
If the Giants re-sign Snee, they have f'ed up again. He hasn't been right since 2010/2011. His body is no longer football ready. Gotta cut bait with these wounded warriors and get some young/angry/hungry blood on that Oline.
Huge blunder to bring him back at vet minimum even.
You don't keep a guy making millions around for nostalgia...

OK, so let the Giants pay him his $11,300,000 due in 2014 on his current contract. That's his current cap hit for 2014.
If the Giants bring him back, they deserve to have another season with a terrible OL and to have it assist in bringing the same awful offense to the field they did in 2013 (not somehow survive it like they did in 2011).
for Snee to retire before the draft? Contract restructure to free up money for FA - that makes sense. But retiring - kind of tips off the Giants' hand re: needs.
that it is Snee doing one last favor to the Giants and not announcing his retirement until after the draft.
I hope you're right. I hope this is to cloud FA leverage and draft predictability. The old guard coach must let the old guard line take its place among the old guard enjoying games from the comfort of their sofas.

One might suggest it's not about whether those players have all lost whatever talent they had two years ago. It's not about what they had or just might still have. Their value is relative, because it's about competition. Are they, relative to other players who can be brought in to do the job, better? If Snee isn't better than Yankey or Xu'a-Filo, then yes indeed wave good-bye to Snee no matter how good he feels. That O-line must be established early, and given all the time available to work together and create chemistry and most importantly generate confidence by Eli that they will keep him upright. What confidence does Eli have that Baas and Snee will get the job done in 2014, no matter how good they feel in February?
If Snee is released, his cap hit is less than retaining him. If the Giants re-sign him at a much lower salary, and he can come and compete, why not let him? If he is at minicamps and isn't back physically, they can cut him then. If he is in training camp and not good enough to play, they can cut him then.
Said it on here before: I don't think anyone posting on BBI knows what Chris Snee can do on a football field if he's recovered from his surgeries and injuries. We don't know if he's done or not, if he can play or not, if his body will hold up or not -- we don't know anything. We can mouth off about "nepotism" but if he can still play, even as a reserve, it could be good business. After all, the Giants are going to be paying Chris Snee a pretty significant amount of money whether is playing for them or not.
Snee, since he was a top guard for so long, if healthy, might play better than whoever we replace him with this season. Giants can't replace all three interior linemen with expensive free agents or high draft choices and Snee with a pay cut might be the best to get by on in 2014.
The point I was trying to make is that there is no way the Giants can replace all those players in a year. Most of these players were better than average at their position or we don't win two Super Bowls with them. Corey Webster was considered to be a very good CB in 2011. Now he is a washed-up bum who the Giants have to get rid of, without having an equal or better replacement. Like last year they got rid of Boley and Blackburn, two solid, battle-tested, and cheap linebackers when they had no replacements half as good.
I think that the strength of the 2011 Giants, the thing they did as well or better as any other team, was the downfield passing game. You replace Nicks and Manningham with Randle and Jernigan and you no longer have the best downfield passing game.
Bradshaw had his foot problems, but he was a team leader and a key contributor. He wanted to stay a Giant. He had signed a four year contract. But the Giants released him. They had Andre Brown and David Wilson. But Andre Brown it turns out is only average, with 3.5 yards/carry and three fumble turnovers when he finally got back last season. And the longer Wilson goes without getting on the field and contributing, the greater the chance that he busts. Maybe the Giants should have kept Bradshaw until they were sure they had his replacement.
So, in summary, the Giants are never going to be able to replace all the players lost from the 2011 championship team in a year or even two.
While I agree the 11 million is obviously too rich
For the Giants blood, there is no way for anyone to judge whether Snee should retire. He's been playing injured the past year and a half, and who's to say he can't make a full recovery? Even if he's not as good as he used to be, that's May still be better than half the guards in the NFL.
Coughlin already used the injury excuse

when talking today about last year's OL disaster. Get ready for another year of Snee and Baas.
They took him off the hot seat and he gets comfortable.
Has anyone here had any kind of hip surgery? I have. I had major arthritis in my left hip and needed hip resurfacing. It took a full year for recovery ( before I could run or jump ).
The hip joint is critical to your athleticism, having to bend and lower your center of gravity in both pass blocking and run blocking. Snee was a turn stile his last year and that is mainly because both his hips are shot. Think of the physical nature of the Oline. Hell, practicing probably hurt just as much as playing on Sunday. At least there is adrenalin flow on Sundays to help mask some of the pain. The hip joints are so pivotal in connecting upper body and lower body power. It connects the core muscle to the legs.
I'd be shocked if Snee was a starting guard on this team come September.

Duned, you should only keep him if he can still do the job, AND if he takes a huge pay cut. If either isn't true I'll also be pissed.

Snee eyes return - ( New Window )
Wouldn't it be nice if Orr actually reached out to Snee before writing the article?
Nah, it's so much easier just taking TC's quotes from the presser rather than actually doing any work.
