Reese and Ross personally scouted Ebron

Quote:
The Giants are so intrigued by Ebron (6-4, 250 pounds) that general manager Jerry Reese and vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross scouted him during the season and filed reports. The team's top two decision makers don't do that unless there's a high degree of interest in a player. Ebron scored high grades and will be a consideration with the 12th pick.

Thought it was newsworthy and hadn't seen it anywhere else.

The Giants offense will look different one way or another next year. You can throw out the window the thought the tight end is an afterthought and the Giants utilization of the tight end over the past 10 years as a blocker, occasional outlet and seam threat as we have no idea the role of the tight end in the new offense.

Regardless, this off season is about helping Eli and with oline and WR extremely deep in this draft, taking the best tight end and maybe the 2nd best offensive weapon (behind Watkins) in the draft certainly will assist with that. If they went this route it should be viewed as a weapon, and not a tight end.

Let's also remember the Giants almost took Eifert last year and that was with an offense that didn't use the tight end nearly as much as being indicated the new offense under McAdoo will.

Not saying I'd advocate this pick, yet, but it's my belief the oline will be partly fixed early in FA where Reese likes to pounce when they have a glaring need, as well as a veteran fill in, and a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I also don't think the value is going to match up with an offensive linemen at 12 with the big three gone.

If you told me we would be getting a player that resembles Vernon Davis over the 4th or 5th best offensive linemen, sounds good to me.

I have added Ebron to my list to watch with Gilbert, Ealy, and Evans where value matches up with our draft slot.

Ebron
Joey in VA : 2/21/2014 11:22 pm : link
Is a rare talent at TE, and he has the size to be an edge blocker if he sets his mind to it. With Nicks likely gone, Randle in the fold and Jernigan stepping up, I could easily see us nabbing Ebron to vastly upgrade the TE position.
uh oh..

I dont know if Anish could take this..

The old way of thinking re: Giants offense may not necessarily hold true any more. Still don't think the Giants take TE that high, but you never know.
If he runs between 4.45 and 4.55
Blue Blood : 2/21/2014 11:35 pm : link
he will move up the charts a bit.
See what happens in FA.
section125 : 2/21/2014 11:37 pm : link
If they pick up OG and OC in FA, Ebron might be the guy with #12 and an OG with #43.
Ebron said he will run faster
robbieballs2003 : 2/21/2014 11:41 pm : link
than Bernard did last year. Last year Bernard ran a 4.50. I like Amaro better but Ebron can be nasty in the right system.
It is interesting
robbieballs2003 : 2/21/2014 11:44 pm : link
that they had this view of him while the old coaching staff was still intact. We tried with Beckum and that was a major fail.
I think Reese
Blue Blood : 2/21/2014 11:54 pm : link
will get two veteran in FA.. he will definitely go for a younger center/guard and then a veteran tackle... then look in round two for another young OL...

#12 i think they will be wide open to do almost anything.. any OL, DT, CB, TE or WR.. and even an LB possibly if Mack or Carr somehow wind up @ 12.. and even a trade down if they can get an extra 2..
TE was starting to be like RB in 2011
pjcas18 : 2/21/2014 11:56 pm : link
everyone on BBI saying the Giants are drafting a TE at 12.

I thought it was a legit possibility all along.
I'm inclined to be underwhelmed with Ebron at 12th
buljos : 2/22/2014 12:06 am : link
but that's based on the Giants offenses as I've known them in the Coughlin - Gilbride era. If Coughlin lets McAdoo take the offense someplace much different, then just maybe Ebron works. But today, with memories of that very poor offense, worse than their losing record might suggest, still fresh in our minds, restoration of blocking must not be clouded by what McAdoo might produce. A very good blocking TE was allowed to go to Chicago, replaced by a TE who couldn't block, and that significantly contributed to the problem. That failed experiment with a non blocking TE is behind us... or is it? Will he be replaced by a TE who hasn't been called upon to block as a significant responsibility? I'm strongly inclined to suggest the lesson be learned, and JR obtain a classic TE like Troy Niklas, a 6'7" 270 crushing block specialist with athleticism and good pass catching skills. Is there a suitable substitute for that skill set by lining up a WR in TE clothing? I think not.
I like what I've seen of Ebron a lot.
TC : 2/22/2014 12:38 am : link
But 12th seems a bit high.
#12 isnt as much the issue for me

Neverend : 2/22/2014 1:05 am : link
pick 12th overall, will likely have a top 10 overall player on a draft board available in our slot...

and we went thru all of that trouble for a dynamic TE?

Would prefer a perennial pro bowl OLineman. Or a WR to replace Nicks. TE comes third. But its all about value and maybe Ebron is a top 10 player on their board
I think the Giants taking a tight end at #12
81_Great_Dane : 2/22/2014 1:24 am : link
is more likely than them taking an offensive lineman. I say that knowing it would make a lot of heads explode on BBI.
So lets say Ebron shows the same ability
Blue Blood : 2/22/2014 1:24 am : link
as Vernon Davis.. same size speed ratio... etc.. the same ability to be a huge mismatch on offense.. too fast for LB;s too big for DB's.. you dont want that on your team..

Lets stop acting like quality OL are hard to find.. they arent..

Could you please advise the Giants exactly where to look. They seem to be having a hard time finding this 'gold mine of OL talent' that you are alluding to.
Ebron is a Reese/Ross type pick
Sy'56 : 2/22/2014 6:23 am : link
at #12. I don't think he is a bad prospect, but he is nowhere near the top 12 on my board.
The Giants have a habit of
section125 : 2/22/2014 6:29 am : link
laying a smokescreen to try and hide their pick.
Shockey, Boss,
RetroJint : 2/22/2014 6:47 am : link
Ballard, Bennett: when has the tight end not been a factor in Tom Coughlin's offense? Do you think Ebron will catch 300 passes if they draft h now that Macadoo is calling the plays? Coughlin said yesterday that they're going to remain vertical. That certainly means the TE is going to be used in the deep seam as well as the sail route, which is Coach's favorite.it doesn't mean the TE is going to be Brent Jones in the new offense.
If Eli doesn't have
bluesince56 : 2/22/2014 7:38 am : link

TE
stretch234 : 2/22/2014 7:44 am : link
With the absolute lack of LB who can cover, TE are open all game, every game. Whether it is the top athletic scale of V. Davis & Graham or guys like Witten and Miller.

Watch how many times TE are lined up off the LOS and get a free run. It happens all the time.

Do you think you need to draft that high to get successful TE
I think maybe a little perspective
barens : 2/22/2014 7:49 am : link
Here. Ebron won't be the last player to meet with Reese/Ross, May not even be the last tight end to meet with them either.
They tried with Beckum...
Dunedin81 : 2/22/2014 7:51 am : link
but that was a spectacular failure not because they weren't willing to be a little unconventional but because he couldn't stay on the field. Whether that's his fault or whether he just had awful luck, it doesn't really matter. Either way I wouldn't draw conclusions one way or another, especially with a new OC.
Im down with it Too

How does he rate as a prospect compared to Eifert and Vernon Davis? I would imagine it's somewhere in between. Davis was an absolute physical specimen with WR speed. I don't think Ebron is quite that level.
That list of TE's
Rjanyg : 2/22/2014 8:14 am : link
Shockey, Boss, Ballard, Bennett and add Myers. The only one on that list was a first rounder was Shockey and he had a great impact on this team. He was more than just a TE, he was a play maker that defenses had to account for. That's the kind on TE I want. Not sure Ebron is that guy but Amaro could be or even Niklas. This I know, you get a solid TE that can block stretch the field and can block, you have helped both your passing game and your running game. Don't know if Ebron is as good a blocker ad he is a receiver. At 250 lbs, that seems kinda light to be and effective blocker. Niklas is 270 and played in a pro style offense at ND.
Xavier Grumble is a vintage Reese type later round pick
GmenDynasty : 2/22/2014 8:18 am : link
#1 ranked High school TE who had a tough set of circumstances which didnt allow him to fully showcase his talents. Also it sounds like he flashed some skill at the East West shrine game.
Would prefer Lewan or Martin at 12
jeff57 : 2/22/2014 8:20 am : link
Ebron seems to have a high bust potential. Doesn't have the size of a Graham and Gronkowski. And I don't see him as the next Vernon Davis.

How do you know how has "high bust potential" and who doesn't?
Think we need
TMS : 2/22/2014 8:50 am : link
more of a blocker in that position. Ebron is primarily a big receiver. We need blocking help with our situation at LT right now. If we want a WR then draft one if he is BPA. Evans could be there as well. TC and MaCadoo will make that call not Reese and Ross.

I'd love to see Ebron in Giants blue. We need weapons.

how is he as a pass catcher? in terms of YAC, is he tough to bring down? is he a straight liner as a runner? any concerns re character?
If this guy's the goods,
Big Blue '56 : 2/22/2014 8:53 am : link
then is taking him at 12 much different than trading up for Shockey from 15 to 14?

On second thought, maybe they HAVE to draft TE that

high because they don't have POPE around to develop the same talent out of a 5th round pick

Joey, in my limited viewing of Ebron, including his highlight reel, he didn't look like a difference-maker to me. He wasn't like a Vernon Davis beating the secondary deep. He was more along the lines of a TE who would get open, a lot of times in the middle of the field, he'd make the catch and then get tackled.

A lot of people like this guy so I must be missing something.

I have no doubt this guy can be a decent TE but is he a game-changer type ala Graham,Gronkowski, a younger Antonio Gates and even a young Jeremy Shockey? Is he really in that class? Or is he more Pete Mitchell, Jermichael Finley type in terms of impact and ability?
Don't think Ebron
Jon in NYC : 2/22/2014 11:24 am : link
is enough of a game changer to justify a no. 12 selection. He certainly would not be the BPA at that point.
I think he can
AnishPatel : 2/22/2014 11:58 am : link
be highly productive in the right system. I think with Ebron as our TE can do some very good things. Now the middle of the field becomes a big time target for us to attack.

I think the mere fact Reese and Ross personally went down is important. I would love Ebron as a Giant, if no OL prospect warrants a pick for us. Then Ebron, CB, or WR is fine by me.

FA will be very telling. With all the talent at premium impact positions , I doubt anyone will take Ebron higher than 12 (unless he blows up the combine).

I hope we land Finley though and go elsewhere at 12. I think there will be a game-changer type or 2 we pass up on if we take Ebron. Mack, Dennard,Gilbert or even Lewan, I think would be better value especially if we sign a half decent TE like Finley or Pettigrew.
Could be a good smoke screen for trade down
dannyamn29 : 2/22/2014 12:29 pm : link
They may like him or they may see him as a guy teams in the 15-25 range may trade up for.
Colby Fleener was a better prospect
PeterS : 2/22/2014 12:38 pm : link
and came off the board at 33. Jimmy Graham, arguably the best TE in the game right now, was a 3rd round pick.

has a lot of drops for my liking. Also, that injury is looming too with the neck fusion. We have wilson as well with that. If he is dirt cheap because of that then fine, but still wouldn't disrupt my plans if Ebron is on the board. At the first least we can go 3 TE or even Ace Double Tight like we used to with Shockey and Mitchell.

Ebron
Percy : 2/22/2014 1:57 pm : link
Weight up from what was thought at 250. Even faster than projected: 4.50 first 40 at the Combine. (!) Decent size hands and reach, too. Ranked overall very close to Martin and Lewan overall, pre-Combine, of course. I think the needs of the Offense (and Eli) will be favored over those of the Defense absent some glaring, enormous, measurable talent difference in other positions of need (and the Gmen have lots of needs). Given the greater depth at OL and WR, but not so much at TE, in this draft, picking Ebron at 12 would be neither unwelcome nor much of a surprise to me.
I'd
CapeGman : 2/22/2014 2:01 pm : link
be OK with Ebron as the pick but would rather they pick a quality tackle.
But like many others have said I think the O-line gets focused on in free agency. So we'll all have to wait and see what happens there before firming up our wish lists this year.
the 12th spot would seem different than, say, the 20th
alligatorpie : 2/22/2014 2:20 pm : link
at the 20th, you really need to vet the top guys in case one drops, i.e. 'is it worth it to stray from the path if this guy drops?'

at 12, one of those players will be there. so, to me, if it is the tackle (orT/G) vs the 'one TE', I still take the OL here, value being fairly equal.

buuut...it will be interesting to watch the games either way.
