NFT: Are the timing of Jeter's retirement and Arods suspension

wgenesis123 : 2/25/2014 3:51 pm
related at all. Yes or No. I think yes.
I agree
YAJ2112 : 2/25/2014 3:57 pm : link
they were planned by George Bush, just like 9/11
I think playing his last year without Arod and missing the circus
wgenesis123 : 2/25/2014 3:57 pm : link
when Arod returns next year has to have an appeal to Jeter.
If Jeter waited until next year the Arod circus might overshadow
wgenesis123 : 2/25/2014 4:00 pm : link
his retirement.
There's probably some connection,
Mad Mike : 2/25/2014 4:07 pm : link
but if Jeter really wanted to keep playing, he wouldn't retire because he's afraid of being around for the circus of A-Rod's return (if he ever even returns to the Yanks). It may have helped him make his decision if he was already leaning strongly towards retirement, but I highly doubt he'd walk away because of A-Rod if he otherwise wanted to come back. I mean even if none of this had happened with A-Rod, I don't think anyone would have been too surprised with Jeter deciding to retire.
No ....
Beer Man : 2/25/2014 4:12 pm : link
Why would Jeter care what A-Rod does. He made it clear that it is his time to leave and he is ready.

Oh I agree. Not trying to suggest that is the reason Jeter is retiring this year. I just think it had to appeal to him and go into his thinking. It might even be a good thing that it worked out this way. Jeter deserves whatever attention he gets this year.

His contract is up after this year anyway, he's 40, and doesn't want to retire as a shell of his former self.
I don't think so but it's nice it worked out that way
mfsd : 2/25/2014 4:18 pm : link
I think after last year, Jeter busted his ass to get healthy for one last season, but realized it's probably too much to expect he could stay healthy consistently going forward.

I hope he does and has a good season, really want to see him leave on a high note
I think there is some resentment there
newmike2 : 2/25/2014 4:22 pm : link
but Jeter is going out on his own terms. If Alex returned, he might have stayed one additional season but who knows.

Either way, it's time.
Pffft.

He just wants to slay Pussy full time instead of part time.
I would think it was a consideration
weeg in the bronx : 2/25/2014 4:28 pm : link
Next year will be a circus when AROD returns. At this point why does Jeter want to put up with that BS?
No

Oh Alex will return. To much money on the table to walk away and he gets to find out what life as a Yankee is like without Jeter around. That has to have an appeal to him as well, its a shame he has screwed things up so bad he might not get to assume the role of the big dog that he craves.
A lot of
Semipro Lineman : 2/25/2014 4:50 pm : link
projecting of motives and emotions in your assumptions wgenesis. Maybe, just maybe, life on the Yankees wasn't the As the World Turns soap opera some would have you believe
...
christian : 2/25/2014 5:03 pm : link
Per Mook - if Jeter was a good captain he would wait for A-Rod to return and help him weather the storm : )

Good point, its all tea leaves, but sometimes there is alot of human nature in assumptions. Anyway its the offseason.
I find it hard to believe Jeter
B in ALB : 2/25/2014 5:04 pm : link
Would do anything other than that which is based on Derek Jeter.

Yes
Jim in Fairfax : 2/25/2014 5:15 pm : link
Jeter knows that ARod can take over for him at SS in 2015.

Had not considered that. I wonder if Alex can still do it?
I'm sure Jeter just wanted to get it over with.
kmed : 2/25/2014 5:40 pm : link
He would have been bombarded with questions about his retirement and his contract all season long so announcing his retirement was probably the lesser of two evils. Jeter is the man.

Um, pretty sure Jim was being sarcastic. A-Rod by 2015 with his bad hips and without PEDs might have less range than Jeter at this point

Arod might not even be on the team next season. I'm sure Jeter wouldn't make major life decisions based on Arod anyway.
Arod will most likely never see a major league baseball field
kmed : 2/25/2014 6:16 pm : link
again. The Yankees aren't going to want him back and they will have to buy him out of his contract and no other team is going to want anything to do with him or the circus that he'd bring. He's just not good anymore and not worth the circus at this point in his career. 3 years ago...maybe.
