"The Giants are concentrating their efforts on a deal with soon-to-be free-agent linebacker Jon Beason, two people with knowledge of the situation told NJ.com. In the meantime, the remainder of their 21 unrestricted free agents have been put on the backburner. The Giants have yet to make an official offer to veteran defensive end Justin Tuck and, while still hopeful something can be worked out, are under the impression that defensive tackle Linval Joseph will be too costly to keep. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks' chances of returning remain "close to zero." |
I wonder if the Giants get Jon Beason's new deal sewed up soon if that affects the decision to tender Herzlich.

My take has always been if Beason gets done, Herzlich gets a MQO. If Beason not locked up, then I think MH gets a tender
MQO=minimum qualifying offer for those who asked
Victor, I think the Giants are resigned to the fact that Joseph is going to test the market, and that the odds are that he's going to find a better deal than they're willing to give him. We'll see.
In FA, I'd be fine with resigning Beason, and getting Gerhert and Schwartz. I'd also like to resign McBride and Thomas if his knee is OK.

It would be a big loss. I hope they can work something out.
Jon, imo you plan for that by not giving some of the vets the money they've gotten when they have underperformed.
And if they miss some kind of deadline and we lose Herzlich, then so be it.
BTW - #100 on the "things to get done list" is get the Corey Webster stationary bike refurbished.
Unfortunately, other teams will see they have more to spend down the road also and will probably overbid for Joseph.
We're really going to miss him if he leaves.
No way. Its like $9+million.
It's possible that they are insistent on hitting FA and testing the market. It's a reasonable point of view for a guy who's about to make the biggest financial action of his life. This is probably the big one for him and it's his time to maximize. He doesn't know if there's some huge deal lurking out there. Maybe there is. Maybe not. If I were him, I'd want to see though.
Then when FA opens up, he might get a huge offer. He might get an offer in-line with what the Giants have proposed. If it's the latter, which is possible, he may end up returning here.
Really disappointing to me if they can't make a deal with a young, very productive, "home grown" talent like Joseph. Especially at such a key position.
Not sure on Joseph. I don't think he's going to garner that type of 7M + offer..
Herz is a good special-teamer on OUR special teams. Unfortunately that doesn't say much, if anything.
We need to invest in another LB even if we keep Beason. Someone that can get on the field on the outside a bit, but can back up Beason in the middle if anything happened.
Agreed, Jon. But I think that's where planning comes into play. Letting a vet go, as Philly always seems to do, makes more sense that letting a young core guy go because he costs the going rate.
It is the prudent move.
Difficult to determine where to draw that loyalty line, for certain.
And on Hankins, we don't know what he's going to do. How many other draft picks have the Giants signed and didn't pan out on the DL?..Whose to day that Hankins, just because he got drafted, can do what Joseph does.
We don't even know what the market is going to bear for him but we fans are already letting him walk..
This is like the cruz situation last year..
So while many predict a 6-8 mill per windfall and sizeable bonus for LinJo, I wouldn't be surprised if he signed(hopefully here) for less that what has been predicted
Not saying Hankins in Austin, but we made the same move signing Austin the 2nd round to back up Cofield and that didn't turn out goo either..
And I agree with yatqb. They should find a way to keep Joseph even if it means parting ways with other underperforming veterans - like they are doing with CWeb and Myers and will do with several others like Rivers, Herzlich, Murphy, Painter, etc.
LinJo is a very solid player. A DT group of LinJo, Jenkins, Hankinson, and Patterson if they can afford him would be excellent, especially given the ability of Jenkins to slide outside. And there's still Kuhn if they can't afford Patterson.
Churning players at various positions doesn't build a team, it just provides work for agents.
If Joseph is gone, who replaces him long term? Our drafts in the first rounds since the Super Bowl in 2007:
2008 Kenny Phillips (Injured but a one contract guy)
2009 Hakeem Nicks (Injured but productive early, appears to be a one contract guy)
2010 JPP - Amazing season in 2011, injured since. Future?
2011 Prince - Jury is out, appears solid as a number 2 corner
2012 - Wilson - Injured or fumbling...thus far a bust
2013 - Pugh - If our theory is build through draft, we are failing at the top. IMO
Also agree with Red Dog about importance of keeping Linval, but the trade-off is probably more than your list of scrubs.
Each and every player on that list has at times showcased why they were drafted where they were... Unfortunately in a sport where one play can end a season or take a toll on a few seasons or in some cases a career, we've had some bad luck.
