Raanan NJ.com: Sources: All FA's but Beason on backburner

Defenderdawg : 3/3/2014 10:30 am
Jordan Raananþ@JordanRaanan·6 mins
The Giants are working hard on a deal to re-sign LB Jon Beason. Everyone else currently on back burner
Code:

"The Giants are concentrating their efforts on a deal with soon-to-be free-agent linebacker Jon Beason, two people with knowledge of the situation told NJ.com. In the meantime, the remainder of their 21 unrestricted free agents have been put on the backburner.

The Giants have yet to make an official offer to veteran defensive end Justin Tuck and, while still hopeful something can be worked out, are under the impression that defensive tackle Linval Joseph will be too costly to keep. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks' chances of returning remain "close to zero."

I'm praying it works out with Beason

and the contract is reasonable. He brings an attitude and toughness that this team needs.
Traina on Herzlich/Beason

I wonder if the Giants get Jon Beason's new deal sewed up soon if that affects the decision to tender Herzlich.

Patricia Trainaþ@Patricia_Traina·2m
My take has always been if Beason gets done, Herzlich gets a MQO. If Beason not locked up, then I think MH gets a tender
Worried Beason gets swiped up quickly

Now the two sides just have to find middle ground in their negotiations. Beason, who recently parted amicably with agent Drew Rosenhaus, is representing himself in contract talks.

Just a matter of time with Beason. No doubt he's back.

they should be focusing on Linval Joseph

Victor, I think the Giants are resigned to the fact that Joseph is going to test the market, and that the odds are that he's going to find a better deal than they're willing to give him. We'll see.
It's
AcidTest : 3/3/2014 10:49 am : link
becoming increasingly clear that Joseph is gone. Big shame, because that creates a big hole, but it looks like we can't afford him. Best wishes to him if he leaves. He's been an excellent Giant.

In FA, I'd be fine with resigning Beason, and getting Gerhert and Schwartz. I'd also like to resign McBride and Thomas if his knee is OK.

It would be a big loss. I hope they can work something out.
Pisses me off that we're just gonna wave goodbye to a 24 year old

DT who has been the lynchpin on the DL against the run. Let's keep letting young, well-performing high draft choices go...that's sure a good way to maintain quality.
The cap is finite, gents
JonC : 3/3/2014 10:55 am : link
If you deem a DT worth a maximum of $6M per and the free market will garner him $7M+, you're stuck letting him go if he so chooses. Cap warrants difficult choices and non-choices.
I'll be annoyed if they tender Herz
JonC : 3/3/2014 10:56 am : link
Really want to see him succeed but let's not start tossing tender money around.

Jon, imo you plan for that by not giving some of the vets the money they've gotten when they have underperformed.

It sounds good on paper, but it takes two to paycut tango.
In terms of priority, tendering Herzlich should come in around #99
Jimmy Googs : 3/3/2014 11:04 am : link
out of the 100 things this team needs to get done.

And if they miss some kind of deadline and we lose Herzlich, then so be it.

BTW - #100 on the "things to get done list" is get the Corey Webster stationary bike refurbished.

.
arcarsenal : 3/3/2014 11:16 am : link
Herzlich is really nothing more than a backup at best and a ST guy. If we lose him, so be it. Totally replaceable.
What's the franchise tag on DT
Earl the goat : 3/3/2014 11:16 am : link
Why not tag linval for the year and then hope to resign next year to long term. This way they can see how Hankins develops
As suggested in the article....
njm : 3/3/2014 11:17 am : link
I'll bet the sticking point in the negotiations with Beason is over guaranteed money. I doubt the total dollar amount will be that difficult, but injuries are an issue.
We can Afford Joseph, based on the projected CAP...
MOOPS : 3/3/2014 11:19 am : link
over the next few years. Just depends on structure of the contract.
Unfortunately, other teams will see they have more to spend down the road also and will probably overbid for Joseph.
We're really going to miss him if he leaves.

No way. Its like $9+million.

Thx jimmy
Earl the goat : 3/3/2014 11:23 am : link
Didn't realize it was that high. 9 million is too much
Herlich's a good special-teamer but that's about it.
Klaatu : 3/3/2014 11:24 am : link
I love the kid for his heart, his guts, his tenacity, but the Giants should get another kid in the pipeline who can back up and learn from Beason (assuming he's re-signed). Maybe they have something in the Bradford kid on the PS, or maybe they'll take a flyer on a late-round draft pick/UDFA like Lamin Barrow or Andrew Jackson.
There's a lot
Jerry in DC : 3/3/2014 11:27 am : link
that we don't know in regard to negotiations. If you make the reasonable assumption that the Giants want Linval to return - and I think most of us would agree with that, they've obviously been in conversations with his people.

It's possible that they are insistent on hitting FA and testing the market. It's a reasonable point of view for a guy who's about to make the biggest financial action of his life. This is probably the big one for him and it's his time to maximize. He doesn't know if there's some huge deal lurking out there. Maybe there is. Maybe not. If I were him, I'd want to see though.

Then when FA opens up, he might get a huge offer. He might get an offer in-line with what the Giants have proposed. If it's the latter, which is possible, he may end up returning here.
I just hope the Giants have a Plan B in mind with regard to Joseph.
Klaatu : 3/3/2014 11:30 am : link
I'd like to think they do, since it doesn't seem like they're confident that they can re-sign him.
At some point you have to build the team around your
Ben in Tampa : 3/3/2014 11:40 am : link
draft picks. Who was the last top 3 draft pick we've signed to an extension? Beatty and Kiwanuka in 8 years. T2 on prove it deals. Granted, much of our high picks have not warranted extension unfortunately, but a guy like LJ should be signed. You can argue about cap all you want, but the Giants have room and the cap is increasing.

Really disappointing to me if they can't make a deal with a young, very productive, "home grown" talent like Joseph. Especially at such a key position.
Tendering Herzlich is crazy
GMANinDC : 3/3/2014 11:46 am : link

Not sure on Joseph. I don't think he's going to garner that type of 7M + offer..

Herz is a good special-teamer on OUR special teams. Unfortunately that doesn't say much, if anything.

We need to invest in another LB even if we keep Beason. Someone that can get on the field on the outside a bit, but can back up Beason in the middle if anything happened.
Smart thing...
2ndroundKO : 3/3/2014 11:51 am : link
to do is to let Joseph walk. Too much money for a solid defender. Besides, that's why we drafted Hankins. Not to mention, Joseph was the anchor in 2012 when our run D was abominable. I think the re-emergence of Tuck and the fortifying of the line in free agency, plus Beason, has more to do with why we improved so much in 2013.

Agreed, Jon. But I think that's where planning comes into play. Letting a vet go, as Philly always seems to do, makes more sense that letting a young core guy go because he costs the going rate.

It is the prudent move.

On that we violently agree, Snee and Kiwanuka both being reasonably good examples.

Difficult to determine where to draw that loyalty line, for certain.
Joseph, IMO, has his best year in 2012
GMANinDC : 3/3/2014 12:07 pm : link
He was the only DT who played well. The rest of the D's were terrible..
This was always my expectation
Geeman : 3/3/2014 12:10 pm : link
Beason was and should be the #1 priority in house signing for this team. Glad to hear management feels the same. I'm still very confident it gets done since both sides want it to get done. Giants cannot afford to overpay Joseph, especially when they have a 2nd round pick invested in Hankins, that's part of the reason he was drafted, whereas there is nothing behind Beason...not even close to a replacement for his value and production.
Also
GMANinDC : 3/3/2014 12:10 pm : link
sometimes, you need solid defenders..You don't have to have All-pro guys at each position.

And on Hankins, we don't know what he's going to do. How many other draft picks have the Giants signed and didn't pan out on the DL?..Whose to day that Hankins, just because he got drafted, can do what Joseph does.

We don't even know what the market is going to bear for him but we fans are already letting him walk..

This is like the cruz situation last year..
We got ourselves into this situation
Ash : 3/3/2014 12:19 pm : link
by restructuring guys like Baas and not cutting ties with people like Snee earlier on. If Joseph goes and Hankins can't step up, this D will look worse. I don't like losing guys on an upward trajectory just because our GM couldn't find a passable mlb for years or decided to gamble on guys who to a lot of people were on the downside. I trust Reese more generally, but that trust has certainly eroded these past two years. This was not a 7-9 team. We're much much closer to 4-12 than to 8-8 quality wise.
And as with Cruz,
Big Blue '56 : 3/3/2014 12:21 pm : link
BBIers may also be off(perhaps way off) on the market value of LinJo..I recall how many felt Bradshaw would get offered big bucks to bolt and yet we were(apparently) the only bidders for his services and signed him to a very good deal(for us) imo..

So while many predict a 6-8 mill per windfall and sizeable bonus for LinJo, I wouldn't be surprised if he signed(hopefully here) for less that what has been predicted
56
GMANinDC : 3/3/2014 12:26 pm : link
Exactly!..This is the case with every off-season. BBI predicts a much higher market for players and then the player signs for equal or less value..

Not saying Hankins in Austin, but we made the same move signing Austin the 2nd round to back up Cofield and that didn't turn out goo either..
is it me
GMANinDC : 3/3/2014 12:29 pm : link
or have we've been going though this we let Cornelius Griffin go?
Ben in Tampa absolutely nails it.
Red Dog : 3/3/2014 12:31 pm : link
Want to know what has happened to the GIANTS? Ben nailed it. No continuity with guys that should have been building blocks going forward.

And I agree with yatqb. They should find a way to keep Joseph even if it means parting ways with other underperforming veterans - like they are doing with CWeb and Myers and will do with several others like Rivers, Herzlich, Murphy, Painter, etc.

LinJo is a very solid player. A DT group of LinJo, Jenkins, Hankinson, and Patterson if they can afford him would be excellent, especially given the ability of Jenkins to slide outside. And there's still Kuhn if they can't afford Patterson.

Churning players at various positions doesn't build a team, it just provides work for agents.
So sick of the Giants being in cap hell.
Tittle 9 20 64 : 3/3/2014 12:39 pm : link
This is what bothers me most about Reese, not his recent poor drafts.
Beason flying without an agent
Damon : 3/3/2014 12:51 pm : link
is good for the Giants. An agent, especially Rosenhaus would already have potential suitors lined up to bid for him. No agent leads me to believe Beason was very sincere about his desire to stay with the Giants.
Joseph Walk? reemergence of tuck?
djstat : 3/3/2014 12:54 pm : link
SOmeone referenced Tuck's remmergence. It was nice to se Tuck reemerge with a strong final few games. 4 sacks against a crippled RG3 and a pathetic redskins line inflated his numbers. While Joseph was the acnhor of the D-line in 2012, the LB's were invisible. The DT is not suppsoed to make all the stops, just funnel the ball carriers to LB who then make the tackle. Didn't happen.

If Joseph is gone, who replaces him long term? Our drafts in the first rounds since the Super Bowl in 2007:

2008 Kenny Phillips (Injured but a one contract guy)
2009 Hakeem Nicks (Injured but productive early, appears to be a one contract guy)

2010 JPP - Amazing season in 2011, injured since. Future?
2011 Prince - Jury is out, appears solid as a number 2 corner

2012 - Wilson - Injured or fumbling...thus far a bust
2013 - Pugh - If our theory is build through draft, we are failing at the top. IMO
Imv?
Big Blue '56 : 3/3/2014 12:58 pm : link

Cap hell
Josh in MD : 3/3/2014 1:01 pm : link
Question is how much does our top-dollar underperforming QB contribute to that situation?
Also agree with Red Dog about importance of keeping Linval, but the trade-off is probably more than your list of scrubs.
With the exception of Pugh
Damon : 3/3/2014 1:03 pm : link
All of the guys you mentioned battled injuries... some of them... (Phillips and Wilson) serious ones. Phillips was on the brink of being all world before his injury and came back to be a solid contributor. Nicks, for two years was arguably one of the best receivers in the league... Don't know where his head is at.. But certainly has suffered injuries. Prince, also suffered injuries but is certainly more than a #2 corner. When they've been good, all of the aforementioned picks have been excellent... We've had some bad luck with injuries, but our staff hasn't wiffed on talent in the first two rounds...

Each and every player on that list has at times showcased why they were drafted where they were... Unfortunately in a sport where one play can end a season or take a toll on a few seasons or in some cases a career, we've had some bad luck.
Agree with Damon
geelabee : 3/3/2014 1:43 pm : link
Our staff has done an excellent job in the first 2 rounds...can't blame Jerry & co for the bad luck of injury or the fact they can't resign players....
This makes a strong case for drafting Donald.
