I like Beason but relying on Herzlich to be the backup to the oft-injured Beason is not a wise decision. Borland could start out at OLB and shift inside if Beason gets injured again.

we drafted LinJO to be that big run stuffing DT. He has produced and has been solid for us. I'd like to re-sign him, and see what a duo of Hankins and LinJo can do.

LinJo is young enough that we can give him 1 big contract and we can even front load it to make it easier as he gets older.

LJ is replaceable but really only for one year b/c Jenkins and Patterson have a limited shelf-life. And that leaves only Hankins probably as the only decent DT going into 2015.

I don't say break the bank for LJ, but I think going above $5M/year does make sense....relunctantly no higher than $6.5ish or so.

I think it's this. But I also think he'll find a very friendly FA market. There will be lots of teams vying for his services. I also agree with Googs that the real impact of losing Joseph could be felt in 2015. One or both of Patterson and Jenkins won't be with the team after next season. So if Joseph goes, using a second day pick on a DT becomes a top priority, even on a team with a huge number of holes. If you can't stop the run you can't win.

We shouldn't lead with our highest/best & LJ should reach for a big number. Maybe they meet somewhere reasonably in between after he sees what other teams have in store.

I really do hope LJ stays, but if those news stories last week estimating $8-$9 million/year for his services are correct, then we got to let him walk and deal with who we got left.

Again, my biggest criticism is the Giants should be matching cap dollars to true core players, but they got out of formula.

works in our favor is that LJ is not a complete DT. What works against us is that what he does, stuff the run, he does extremely well. He's also 25, has a high character, and is injury free. His price will be bid up beyond where I would go, namely 6/36.

I hope like hell they look at a kid like Houston's Earl Mitchell. He'll be 27 in September. At 6-3, 308, he's a little out of place as a NT in Houston's 3-4, but he'd do fine in our 4-3. He's never missed a game in four years, although last year was his first as a starter (14 games) and he racked up 48 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Rumors are going around that Mitchell is going to be a hot commodity on the free agent market and might get a bigger deal than many expect.

There aren't too many talented UFA DTs on the right side of 30 who are hitting the open market this year.

More pressing needs so let LinJo go... Ok so we sign a player to strengthen another position but then DT gets weaker ...

They are hoping JPP comes back to form and will need $ to pay him. Paying Linval will prevent what it will take to retain JPP. So, ask yourself, do you invest a boat load into a 1 Tech DT or a game changing DE, who is also very young. Patterson can be re-signed to provide depth. I see Reese investing in a young 3 Tech DT in this draft early. Hankins will rotate at the 1. Jenkins the 3. Beason in the middle.

This makes Joseph unaffordable.

Thanks. When Reese went DE then DT in 2010, it kept our D line a strength and helped us wint Super Bowl 46, kind of in the same fashion as 42. I guess it's time to reload that D line, that's why I think Reese will be looking for a young pass rusher early in this draft, either inside or outside. My guess is DT and I would think 1st or 2nd round is where one will be selected. The Giants are drafting DL like they Draft WR, almost every year in the top 3 rounds.

Maybe its league wide. Injuries seem to catch up to these guys as soon as they become expensive. The shorter contracts seem to bring in guys who can meet average expectations. we know Joseph won't take a short contract, and there is no upside to locking up an anchor to a DL that has been way below average.

Upgrade from Tuck and insurance for JPP is very important, IMO.

He has his detractors here, and that's fine, but I wouldn't dismiss him too quickly.

I cannot pretend to have a clue about the prospects, but I really hope theres an end available at 12 that we really like. I am so jealous of teams like Carolina that have an awesome Dline that come to play week in and week out. I want that, but it's expensive. That's why drafting ends is so important. They are arguably the most important position on the team(other than QB) and the amount of money FA's get is an example of that.

I'm with you on that. It APPEARS that these big contracts often result in decreased production be it complacency or injury. There are others of course, but Jared Allen, Reggie White, perhaps Peppers are some of the few DL reciving huge bucks that did as well as or better than before signing the FA contract..

Cofield did well, but he hardly signed for the bucks that LinJo may very well get
