Brandon Spikes at MIKE

pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:07 pm
Seems like Spikes could be a guy who the Giants can add at a fair cost given his injury ending 2013 (or perhaps Belichick's desire to put him on IR because of his attitude - depending on your source) and his reputation as a 2-down LB (and an eye gouger) and his past PED suspension.

I love his attitude and his physicality, so warts not withstanding he might be the kind of player the Giants need to consider this off-season.

If Beason is re-signed obviously no need for Spikes, they are redundant, only I don't think Spikes is the leader that Beason is, but at the same time Beason doesn't hit like Spikes.

Given who has been at LB the past few seasons for the Giants, if he is affordable (no clue if he will be), I'd like to see what he brings to the defense.

Or I could be off base and he's really expensive.
Blue Blood : 3/7/2014 12:08 pm : link
he is a two down mike.. he is a run stopper and not very good in coverage..
He's the same
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:09 pm : link
in coverage as Beason.

You need to be careful with the matchups - he's not covering Darren Sproles, but he's no worse than any LB the Giants have had at MIKE in a long time.

Spikes is at his best at ILB in a 3-4. He would really struggle in a 4-3 having to go sideline to sideline. Sure he is a good run stopper but he is bad in coverage and imagine him having to cover against Witten, Ertz and Jordan Reed.
He is not the same as Beason in coverage
Jay on the Island : 3/7/2014 12:12 pm : link
that is just not true. Sure Beason isn't as good as he used to be but he is still better than Spikes.
Beason was a great
chopperhatch : 3/7/2014 12:13 pm : link
DC on the field. He adjusted the defense based on the looks the O was giving him. Im not sure of Spikes' being able to do that.
does he have the mental capacity
GIANTSr01 : 3/7/2014 12:13 pm : link
to "QB" the defense?
The Giants do not need any more
section125 : 3/7/2014 12:14 pm : link
injured players nor players on the wrong side of 28.
Here is an email from a buddy of mine
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:14 pm : link
I agree with this (he's a Dolphins fan - who writes for the Orlando paper, used to have a draft site, and has been on NFL Network):

I think he can work as an every-down player but you have to have the right scheme for him. He canít be forced to cover speedy guys over a large patch of grass but he can easily follow the quarterbackís eyes and defend a short hook zone or make a delayed blitz call.

Thatís where he excelled in Florida, where he actually made plays in the passing game. He broke up 7 passes in 2007, and 12 total in his 3 year career at UF. He had 6 interceptions in his final two seasons there, and amazingly returned 4 of them for touchdowns.

I understand heís a 4.9 or 5.0 guy and you donít want him covering a wide expanses or trying to keep up with fast receivers. But if you let him uses his eyes and instincts in the middle of the field then I think you will find an every down player.

Iíd be ecstatic if Miami grabbed him.
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:16 pm : link
is 26 and does not have nearly the injury history of Beason.

correct me if i'm wrong
GiantsFan84 : 3/7/2014 12:17 pm : link
but wasn't he sent home during the playoffs?
He was sent home
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:19 pm : link
prior to the playoffs (or AKA put on IR)

local reports are Belichick was tired of his tardiness, etc.

I just think the Giants won't be able to be as selective as they might want to be given the numerous holes.

And just for reference sake
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:21 pm : link
there were 2 starting ILB's with a lower grade in coverage in 2013 from PFF than Beason.

Crap seems like he's been around for ever. Thinking of Takeo I guess.
MLB's in coverage is a virtual oxymoron
Big Blue '56 : 3/7/2014 12:24 pm : link
Just resign Beason.
Tittle 9 20 64 : 3/7/2014 12:32 pm : link
Problem solved.
What's your plan B
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:36 pm : link
if you don't re-sign Beason?

I think Beason is plan A, but what is plan B.

Tuesday morning Beason can negotiate with 31 other teams.
If you want a LB to be able to cover
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/7/2014 12:39 pm : link
then you'll hate Spikes.
I like Spikes but he would be a bad fit for Giants and vice versa
NYGmen58 : 3/7/2014 12:43 pm : link
In my opinion Spikes is really only suited as a 3-4 ILB, plenty of better suitors out there than the Giants.
He played the 4-3
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:49 pm : link
in New England most of his career.

Here are his PFF rankings among ILB's (they keep 4-3 and 3-4 ILBs together)

2013: 6th ranked ILB out of 55 qualified (need to play 25% of snaps)

2012: 9th out of 53

2011: 18th out of 51

2010: (only year in the 3-4): 9th out of 50

In all those years the Giants had no one ranked within 5 spots of him.

If the Giants can play Chase Blackburn at MIKE, Spikes will be an upgrade.

Screw you guys, I'm signing him.
pj, If we don't sign Beason,
Big Blue '56 : 3/7/2014 12:51 pm : link
I'm with you
arcarsenal : 3/7/2014 12:51 pm : link
If Beason goes elsewhere we could do much worse than Spikes.. but I think Beason will be back so probably moot. (I hope)
he has a problem with tardiness
GiantsFan84 : 3/7/2014 12:52 pm : link
and you want to bring him in to play for coughlin?
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 12:53 pm : link
I agree, Beason is plan A, but with no plan B we could wind up with Paysinger or Herzlich (based on if they re-sign him) as the MIKE and that would be a disaster.
stretch234 : 3/7/2014 12:56 pm : link
What does he do to help defend against Dallas and Philly and to an extent Wash because he is really a slow ILB for a 3-4 defense
He is slow
Mark from Jersey : 3/7/2014 1:11 pm : link
not an optimal 4-3 MLB.

I thought the pats were a 3-4?
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 1:21 pm : link
the Pats switched to a 4 - 3 as a base D before the 2011 season.

They run so many different looks for them it really just meant Wilfork wasn't a NT.

Who cares
OC : 3/7/2014 2:19 pm : link
If he doesn't cover like a DB? If he can handle his business within a 10 yd. box that's good by me. If Beason leaves I'd take him.
IF TC calls Bill
old man : 3/7/2014 2:48 pm : link
about BS and gets the whole picture, and TC is interested after that, there may be contact with him.
If he can help, and BS and TC can get along ( as in BS grows up), I'm Ok with a 1 yr prove it.

However, I see only about a 5% chance it happens. There are too many key issues against it happening.
sundial slow and a knucklehead
JonC : 3/7/2014 3:01 pm : link
Both true
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 3:21 pm : link
but sometimes you need to put the stopwatch away and watch the guy play.

Can't see anyone who does that having a bad impression of Spikes. Dude can hit and has good instincts.

off field is a concern, but like I said with a projected 25+ vacancies the Giants can't really be selective or as selective as they may want to be.
I've seen plenty, I think his big hits color the view
JonC : 3/7/2014 3:39 pm : link
He's a big hitter, decent instincts, not enough to play 4-3 MIKE for PF's scheme, imo. Beason's SPEED and brains make all the difference.
Agree, thogh Beason is close to the same coverage
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 3:44 pm : link
liability that Spikes is, but anyway if the Giants can't/don't sign Beason, the next option cannot be Herzlich/Paysinger.

Spikes at MIKE is not Sintim at DE or Kiwi at LB.
Perhaps not
JonC : 3/7/2014 3:47 pm : link
but he's very ordinary either way, I doubt the team views him as a reasonable solution.
Well we apparently have different opinion
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 3:54 pm : link
maybe I overrate LB's after what we've seen the past few years, but he's far from ordinary.

if he is ordinary, the Giants LB's have been very extraordinary (and I don't mean in the good sense).

Most of us feel the Giants aren't drafting a MIKE at 12, that leaves Beason or ????

Not a lot of options at MIKE in the FA market.

and like them or not, PFF loves him.
Personally I would rather them sign
Jay on the Island : 3/7/2014 3:54 pm : link
Daryl Smith to play MLB than Spikes.
Now Smith
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 3:57 pm : link
is a guy I see as purely a 3-4 ILB, and couldn't be more opposite of Spikes since he's soft against the run.

Plus Smith is north of 30.

Still though, better than the UFA dregs the Giants have had there.
I agree pjacs Spikes would immediatley be our best linebacker
pmmanning : 3/7/2014 4:24 pm : link
If Beason is not signed. We have to sign guys who can play the position even if for only two downs. Most of current linebackers will be unemployed at the start of the season.

Smith played almost his whole career as a 4-3 Linebacker in Jacksonville and was very productive.
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 4:46 pm : link
ran a 4-3, but Smith IMO is a decent cover guy, poor run stopper, better suited as 3 - 4 ILB - even more now that he's over 30.

Which is why he was attractive to the Ravens.

He was attractive to the Ravens
BigBluDawg : 3/7/2014 5:03 pm : link
Because even when the Jaguars switched to a 3-4 in 2009 he still had 100+ Tackles , Proving he was versatile enough to fit any scheme.
pjcas18 : 3/7/2014 5:42 pm : link
if you say so. Pretty sure he'll be looked at primarily by 3 - 4 teams.
Beason does not get enough credit sometimes
Neverend : 3/7/2014 7:12 pm : link
the guy is plenty fast moving laterally, its changing directions that might be more of the problem
I know Brandon and he would do well with the G-Men
ZoneXDOA : 3/7/2014 8:20 pm : link
He actually did play every down and killed it in the second half of the season. He was late to that meeting because there was a freaking snow storm and his car was legit stuck on his street because of the lack of plowing. He still made it within a reasonable time keeping the weather in mind. Little Bill is a hard ass and from what I'm told, and what I've read, players are little more than chess pieces to him. I think with the right people around him and the right staff, this kid will flourish. I would take Spikes any day if we don't keep Beason.
So, you think BB
Doomster : 3/7/2014 10:35 pm : link
IR'd him just for missing a meeting because of a snow storm, just before the playoffs? Seriously?
If Beason can't be re-signed
mrvax : 3/7/2014 11:34 pm : link
Spikes is a no-brainer. Our LB corps outside of Beason is probably the worst in the NFL. All Turds. You find a linebacker that can play a little, you sign him and start him right away.
Spikes might be an upgrade from Herzlich
JonC : 3/8/2014 9:44 am : link
but unless he's dirt cheap it doesn't make a ton of sense.

In a 4-3 MIKE you need some ability to cover the rush game sideline to sideline, at the very least. You can scheme to cover up some of the coverage deficiencies but not the fulcrum of the rush defense, especially when your OLBs are below average, and your DC schemes as PF does.
