The Giants have "stated a negotiating position" to S Ryan Mundy, DL Arthur Jones. (Thanks @MikeGarafolo for teaching me the right verbage!)

Just stated that Jones is signing with the Pats to be with his brother. Don't know if that is true, or if he even has a brother on the Pats, just stating what a poster stated on this thread.
His brother, Chandler Jones, is indeed on the Pats.

Although his other brother, Jon "Bones" Jones, is a UFC Champion, so maybe Arthur will sign with the UFC.

That's just a fan from Beantown that wants Arthur Jones to sign with the Patriots. I clicked on his name and he is tweeting at Jones imploring him to sign with the Patriots.
Why..

Ryan Mundy? Didn't the defense play much better after he was on the field less?
Mundy is solid depth at SS

and special teams.

And if Hill gets suspended or Rolle tears a knee?

They need to re-sign Mundy and/or Stevie Brown.
Rather it be

Stevie Brown
Mundy is okay on the bench, but I'd rather have Brown in there

trying to make things happen.
Stevie's success has mostly been in centerfield though

Mundy lacks the range for that, but still brings the lumber at SS.
wow

so are we moving on from linval?
Mundy

is good insurance as a rotational S and special teams guy.

And with some concern about Brown and how he'll recover/fit back in in terms of his play.

I think most teams see him the same as we do, so unless he gets blown away with a "starter" offer from some team, most of the offers will leave him with choosing the best situation for him.

I would not be shocked if Giants looked at a veteran S if one is still out there in a week or two or again went S in the draft at some point with the situation there.

Hill is a WC, Rolle is a highly-paid, aging veteran, Brown is a ?.
Mundy is good depth, insurance and

Special teams player. Giants need to do this and then worry about safety again, if need be, next off-season. Right now we are fine with safety if Mundy resigns. Too many other areas to worry about.
If only 1

I would prefer Mundy to Brown. Mundy came on the last quarter of the season. In particular, watch his game against the Seahawks. He was uncanny in that game in how he became invisible to Wilson on his blitzes, which is a very difficult thing to do to the Hawks QB. I think Mundy is much more than depth. Yes Brown had the 8 picks & one million yards returning them but he whiffs a lot as a tackler. He is also a keeper. In fact Reese's best work has been at S .
Well...except for 2009.

...
Will the Giants keep more than 9 DBs?

The safety candidates currently would be Rolle, Hill, Mundy, Brown and Taylor. The CBs Prince, a FA or draft choice, McBride and maybe James. TT is the wild card. If they keep him as a 5th corner, I'd make him also the 5th safety, which could make Mundy expendable. If Rolle is dumped over his cap hit, Mundy becomes a must keep.
what the heck does that mean ??

"stated negotiating position"
^^
Sneakers O'toole : 3/9/2014 11:49 pm : link
It's cute terminology that showcases the league's position on this weekend. You can open negotiation with player agents of players under contract early, but you can't make an actual offer until the start of FA.

It's a bizarre stance and a weird policy.
I'd also prefer Mundy over Brown if choosing one
JonC : 3/10/2014 8:40 am : link
Mundy is steady, athletic enough to matchup, and hits like a truck along with playing special teams.
I feel like we're overrating Ryan Mundy.
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/10/2014 8:43 am : link
If he was really that good a backup, the Steelers would've kept him. The moment Will Hill took over, the defense improved.
That's why he's a backup
JonC : 3/10/2014 8:48 am : link
Perhaps he's the best backup SS option they see for now, he's a proven player just not an allstar. Bring him back and see what the draft brings.
