Not sure how much Mario has left in the tank, but for obvious sentimental reasons, I'm ok with this. Plus BBI gets one of its favorite whipping boys back. Can't wait for all the threads questioning his mental acuity.
What exactly were his injuries in san fran?

I think his problem with the Gaints was an inability to grasp the offemse and hewas oftem not on the same page as Eli which is the same problem that Randle has. The change in OCs might help if only with this aspect of the game. Wold love to see Manningham come back.

SLIM : 3/16/2014 5:21 pm : link
The guy had a great year in 2010 for us. His biggest problem in 2011 was the emergence of crUz and that he had minor dings. If he is healthy it makes complete sense for both sides to join together again
He's only 27.
Klaatu : 3/16/2014 5:21 pm : link
It wouldn't hurt to bring him in, see how the knee is.
How bad was his knee injury?

If I recall, McAdoo said he'd like to retain the route trees
KeoweeFan : 3/16/2014 5:23 pm : link
but cut down on the number of reads the WR/QBs had to make simultaneously, cutting back on the "thinking" the WRs had to do and let them play more naturally.
(My recollection was that "thinking" was not one of 'Rio's fortes.)
Maybe he'd thrive under the revised system.

Completely Agree Bradshaw
MikeinSeattle : 3/16/2014 6:14 pm : link
This guy made two HUGE catches for us for our last Super Bowl team - enough with the wise cracks. If the knee checks out it is a smart gamble.

He is still relatively young, knows Eli and Coughlin and most of all has proven he can make big plays in big games at key moments.
In the beginning of FA I was hoping they would bring him back
Rjanyg : 3/16/2014 6:15 pm : link
But then I thought Ted Ginn would be better with his return ability. They now have Demps for that and MM would be a nice receiver to add if his knee checks out......for vet min of course.
.....
Micko : 3/16/2014 6:16 pm : link
Makes tons of sense. He made so many big plays in 2011. Some dumb ones too but he and Eli def had a connection.
Or what about that other receiver ...
FragileFox2 : 3/16/2014 6:16 pm : link
white guy, not terribly athletic, punt returner, used come out of the tunnels waving the white towel, would go down to the end zone and stand by the pylon getting the fans all crazed up ... left the Giants for the Packers ... came back after a year.

oipolloi : 3/16/2014 6:28 pm : link
You know he and Jacobs talked about coming back to NY. And to me, Mario looked exactly the same in SF--both in good and bad ways.

And I'm not saying he milked the knee injury but I have a feeling he will be a lot healthier back in NY.
if healthy.. I'd be interested in having Manningham back..
Rsspro : 3/16/2014 6:32 pm : link
him and Cruz at some points together on the field were very good.. he still is a capable receiver and if he's healthy.. he may realize he was better off here with our Giants.. and he could still find a place in the mix at wide receiver..
I would love this if it worked out.
j_rud : 3/16/2014 6:35 pm : link
They'll all be learning a new offense but there is familiarity with Eli and it shouldn't take much time to get back in the groove. It's an advantage over bringing in a completely new guy. Cruz, Randle, and Manningham would be a solid, versatile trio. Really hope they can get something done.
Love to have him back.

I'm guessing there's still a little left in the bank, and there's moves to be made if we need to borrow some from next year if we find someone we can't live without. However, we're about in that phase where the sexy moves are minimum wage youngsters and min wage vets who might have a little something left. MM likely fits in that category.
mario was always a solid receiver here
GiantsFan84 : 3/16/2014 6:52 pm : link
and was far and away their best after the catch WR. he is a fine 3rd wideout. this team needs depth at the positions.

I said in my offseason plan that this season would hinge on current giants....beatty, randle, Jernigan, and JPP. they all need to step up, especially beatty, randle, and JPP in order for this team to be good.

this team was never going to sign a premium WR. too many holes and too little cap space. it's time for the in-house solutions to step up.

my WR plan was to bring in a vet for low money to push Jernigan and randle and draft a guy. that appears to be exactly what will happen.

sure, mm had some great catches (and has been pointed out earlier, one of the greatest in g history) but if his speed has been compromised, what's his advantage? he frequently ran wrong routes when he was here. was often not on the same page as eli and a lot of the time wasn't smart enough to make good reads off the line. reuben r stepped right into his shoes there. i don't have to remind you guys that next year will be a NEW system. the routes will be different, pacing will be different, hell ... the play names won't even be the same. so it won't really be like "coming home". i'm not sure mm can handle all this new stuff. he would have to come really cheap for me to get excited.

I loved what MM did for us here, but this is all a matter of respect to him for what he did here and a courtesy to him. He may very well get a training camp invite type of contract (much like Hillis), but he's not being penciled in as any kind of solution or even depth WR.

Manningham is pretty much finished as an NFL caliber WR. The injuries with SF have done him in, for a guy, who was never the most consistent to begin with.

then it can't be Manningham that you have a problem with, it has to be Reese. Heres a guy who Eli is super comfortable throwing the ball to, who knows the system, can be plugged right into a WR corps that is depleted with Nick's departure, can go deep, made some of the biggest plays in their last SB run, and can probably be had on a one year/vet minimum deal. And if he somehow forgot how to play football, he can be cut in camp. Please, enlighten me, what could possibly be wrong with this?

With the players we have signed and the players we are still looking at it appears our team doctors are on overtime. If the doctors think that Mario and others are ready to play at a high level, then why not? It appears the organization will trust their doctors here. It is surprising how many injured players we have been involved with.

I'd consider him playing in Nicks old position. Stretch that field! Give the coverage something to think about on every play.

Don't put words in my mouth. I have no issue with Reese and have defended him across numerous threads from the resident mouthbreathers. I think he's put together a solid B to B- offseason thus far.

My issue with this hinges on two major factors. First, he's coming off a serious knee injury and he wasnt all that explosive to begin with. His game was predicated on elusiveness and cutting ability. This isnt a guard or DT we're talking about.

Secondly, while he did make some big plays for us, he got by on pure athleticism. How many times did he let himself get run out of bounds and the play would get called back? How many times did we collectively curse him knowing that he ran the wrong route or make a bad read? And while he knew the offense, kind of, it's not the same offense we'll be running next season. That'll be three different offense in 4 years.

If the deal is anything more than a year at minimum, it just seems rather risky to me.

Dan Marino: 15
AJ Green: 10
Ryan Leaf: 27
Blaine Gabbert: 42
Ray Lewis: 13, and he outsmarted an entire police force.
Wrong

He will be 28 in a month with bad knees is way past his prime!!!
I take the Wonderlich with a grain of salt

There is such a thing as football smarts, but MM was notoriously bad at learning the offense. Maybe a new offense would be easier to digest, but I think it's a worrisome point. Not as worrisome as the condition of his knee, though.

would probably be at or near

veteran minimum with incentives I would guess
Yes, probably close to minimum if not minimum

He shredded his knee in December 2012. You would think that he wouldn't be back healthy until now anyway. He doesn't have the knowledge of the offense as Gilbride is gone but he does have a better rapport with Eli than probably anybody on the team except Cruz.

He was the third receiver here after putting up good numbers the year before in some games serving as the number 1. He left to get a chance for more playing time and dollars. Nothing wrong there.

If his knee checks out fine, I think he is back. Something to keep in mind was that even before the big injury, he had some knee problems (tendinitis?) that caused him to miss time.
MM & the Wonderlic
YANKEE28 : 3/16/2014 11:15 pm : link
Just too much on BBI about MM and his 6 on the Wonderlic. Few remember that he was NOT represented by an agent when he took the test. Most (all) these draftable players have agents working with them on being in great shape for specific field agility tests, practicing interviews AND prepping for the Wonderlic.

I would be the last to say that MM is going to be one of the smarter guys in any locker room, but fans need to remember that he just walked in cold and took the Wonderlic. No agent, no practice tests. I am sure that with an agent and some Wonderlic prep work, his score might have been somewhat higher and therefore a non-issue on BBI

he can get deep

when healthy which is always a valuable skill. He isn't the best at going up and getting the ball in traffic, he's at his best when he creates separation. I want Eli to have a guy who is great on toss-ups and 50-50 deep balls, Mike Evans can be that guy for Eli. Shockey, Plax, and Nicks were all great at going up and getting it. Mario is a very quick player but he's not someone who can physically overpower DBs and bully them the way a true #1 should do in the NFL.

Mario made some clutch plays for us and I'll always be a fan. But he has always been an inconsistent big play receiver who is closer to a #3WR than a #1. After his SB performance of course I'd love to see him back on this team on a fair contract, but I would still consider drafting a WR in the 1st.

proves that Eli is now player-coach status. What is involved here is trust. It's not McCoattails at work here. Randle represented a major cognitive failure last year. If this is a bonafide WCO that they're installing, learning the route options will be even harder than last year's offense. One rather obvious deduction that you can draw from '13 is that Eli grew very discontent with Randle. Said this last week: trust is a good thing
Manningham gets criminally underrated for his 2011-12 season
Eric on Li : 3/16/2014 11:38 pm : link
a) he played through knee injuries all season and counting the post season he had 7 TD's in 16 games.

b) I think he caught about 8 lofted fades over his shoulder in the back corner of the end zone - I remember at least 3-5 botched calls as OOB, including 2 in one game - and quite simply that is one of Eli's best throws.

c) the TD in the 49er game

d) and obviously the catch in the SB.

If he can pass a physical I'd welcome him back for the minimum open arms. I thought he actually looked decent the couple times I saw him as a 49er.
One thing that sticks out to me

In the video of all those catches by Manningham is the very nice clean pocket Manning has. Night and day between 2011 and 2013

Yes he made "the catch" I get it. But he bolted for the $. We owe him shit and he is way past his prime. Humor him for an interview but let's get some young receivers in here not retreads!!!

Just shut the fuck up. If they do sign him, it'll be a min. deal. He didn't bolt for big $. If he checks out it's low risk, high reward. Get a grip
If healthy
nyynyg : 3/17/2014 12:26 am : link
An absolute great signing. When you look at who we had on our WR depth chart last season, if Mario is healthy and you don't think it is an upgrade, we'll have to agree to disagree here. From Louis Murphy on down, we need to upgrade. Bringing Mario back would be fantastic.

not clear is why he was put on IR again last year. He tore the ACL and PCL the year before - that's pretty serious. He came back, but was put on IR again. Harbaugh wouldn't say why. http://blogs.sacbee.com/49ers/archives/2013/12/49ers-place-mario-manningham-on-injured-reserve.html - ( New Window )

Yeah, that was a big mystery too.

Manningham had a big practice right before the Jags game in London, and it was a rather emotional return. It seemed like all would be well with him like it was for Crabtree.

He made one or two catches against the Panthers regular season game, and was nowhere to be seen afterwards. It didn't seem too crazy at the time because of the lack of 3 WR sets, and Crabtree and Boldin as starters.

Rushed back too soon. Not his fault....there was some desperation at WR position.

Will miss the guy. Was a very good player when healthy and acclimated to the system.
