Maybe Cruz can once again scream

in his ear - "I told you. I told you!"

TE
I'm rooting for MM
Headhunter : 3/16/2014 5:37 pm : link
hated when he left, but there is a major injury he suffered
I like this
Rflairr : 3/16/2014 5:40 pm : link
More than signing someone like James Jones
it tells you the type of idiots we have on this board
Bradshaw #44 : 3/16/2014 5:40 pm : link
when you mention Manningham / Pot in your initial response instead of mentioning Mario having one of the greatest catches in NY Giants history and helping the Gmen win a super bowl. I believe he also caught a TD in the NFC Championship game. If only Mario could be as perfect as some of you clowns.

Hope he's got something left
jcn56 : 3/16/2014 5:40 pm : link
If he does, he'd be an excellent addition.

SanFranGiantsFan : 3/16/2014 5:40 pm : link
Would like to see this happen.
If healthy
Giants2012 : 3/16/2014 5:41 pm : link
yes, I would want him back.

I can see Owen Daniels
gmenrule1986 : 3/16/2014 5:41 pm : link
at TE on a one-year deal along with a fairly high draft pick.
I like Mario
illmatic : 3/16/2014 5:42 pm : link
but I don't know if I want to see the team relying on him as the #3 WR coming off of his injuries. Not to mention it would bump up Randle when I was hoping he would be more of the #3 guy. I guess they could still draft a guy in the first few rounds though.
If healthy
chris r : 3/16/2014 5:42 pm : link
A great pickup. Good enough to hold down the fort opposite Cruz if Randle isn't ready but cheap enough to be justifiable as a 3rd or 4th receiver.
Also returning to the Giants
NewBlue : 3/16/2014 5:43 pm : link
Andre Brown.......but he may be leaving once again
I am all for this
Aaron in MA : 3/16/2014 5:43 pm : link
If Eli wants him back, this will happen.
Put me in the yes column.
Stu : 3/16/2014 5:46 pm : link
Give him #86.

Brandon Jacobs...David Carr...I know carr wasn't a true Giant but still.

He won a ring with us. I see him as a beloved backup Giant QB who had some bad stints with the Texans, Panthers, and Niners.
Bring him
Arcanum : 3/16/2014 5:52 pm : link
Back. I hated when he left. Or offense was really clicking at wrs in the playoffs
I'd love him back in blue.

I don't know what to say,
Ira : 3/16/2014 6:09 pm : link
because I have no clue about how close to his level he can still play. But I'm glad they're talking to him. Maybe something good will come from it.
Completely Agree Bradshaw
MikeinSeattle : 3/16/2014 6:14 pm : link
This guy made two HUGE catches for us for our last Super Bowl team - enough with the wise cracks. If the knee checks out it is a smart gamble.

He is still relatively young, knows Eli and Coughlin and most of all has proven he can make big plays in big games at key moments.
In the beginning of FA I was hoping they would bring him back
Rjanyg : 3/16/2014 6:15 pm : link
But then I thought Ted Ginn would be better with his return ability. They now have Demps for that and MM would be a nice receiver to add if his knee checks out......for vet min of course.
.....
Micko : 3/16/2014 6:16 pm : link
Makes tons of sense. He made so many big plays in 2011. Some dumb ones too but he and Eli def had a connection.
Or what about that other receiver ...
FragileFox2 : 3/16/2014 6:16 pm : link
white guy, not terribly athletic, punt returner, used come out of the tunnels waving the white towel, would go down to the end zone and stand by the pylon getting the fans all crazed up ... left the Giants for the Packers ... came back after a year.

McConkey I think?

Bradshaw..me thinks you need to lighten up.
Blue21 : 3/16/2014 6:19 pm : link

Mario was not happy in SF
oipolloi : 3/16/2014 6:28 pm : link
You know he and Jacobs talked about coming back to NY. And to me, Mario looked exactly the same in SF--both in good and bad ways.

And I'm not saying he milked the knee injury but I have a feeling he will be a lot healthier back in NY.
if healthy.. I'd be interested in having Manningham back..
Rsspro : 3/16/2014 6:32 pm : link
him and Cruz at some points together on the field were very good.. he still is a capable receiver and if he's healthy.. he may realize he was better off here with our Giants.. and he could still find a place in the mix at wide receiver..
I would love this if it worked out.
j_rud : 3/16/2014 6:35 pm : link
They'll all be learning a new offense but there is familiarity with Eli and it shouldn't take much time to get back in the groove. It's an advantage over bringing in a completely new guy. Cruz, Randle, and Manningham would be a solid, versatile trio. Really hope they can get something done.
Love to have him back.
Damon : 3/16/2014 6:36 pm : link
Good move. Guy Eli knows. And trusts. Live to see Cruz and 'rio three headed monster with randle. And win another ring.

fkap : 3/16/2014 6:52 pm : link
I'm guessing there's still a little left in the bank, and there's moves to be made if we need to borrow some from next year if we find someone we can't live without. However, we're about in that phase where the sexy moves are minimum wage youngsters and min wage vets who might have a little something left. MM likely fits in that category.
mario was always a solid receiver here
GiantsFan84 : 3/16/2014 6:52 pm : link
and was far and away their best after the catch WR. he is a fine 3rd wideout. this team needs depth at the positions.

I said in my offseason plan that this season would hinge on current giants....beatty, randle, Jernigan, and JPP. they all need to step up, especially beatty, randle, and JPP in order for this team to be good.

this team was never going to sign a premium WR. too many holes and too little cap space. it's time for the in-house solutions to step up.

my WR plan was to bring in a vet for low money to push Jernigan and randle and draft a guy. that appears to be exactly what will happen.

hightop cleats : 3/16/2014 7:00 pm : link
sure, mm had some great catches (and has been pointed out earlier, one of the greatest in g history) but if his speed has been compromised, what's his advantage? he frequently ran wrong routes when he was here. was often not on the same page as eli and a lot of the time wasn't smart enough to make good reads off the line. reuben r stepped right into his shoes there. i don't have to remind you guys that next year will be a NEW system. the routes will be different, pacing will be different, hell ... the play names won't even be the same. so it won't really be like "coming home". i'm not sure mm can handle all this new stuff. he would have to come really cheap for me to get excited.

productive anymore. On the plus side the system is different so he won't be hanging Eli out to dry. We have RR for that now.
Yeah, like the way he "hung Eli out to dry" against San Francisco in the NFC Championship game and against New England in the Super Bowl. Jesus.
I'd take him
Spock : 3/16/2014 7:14 pm : link
for the right price. I'm not sure about RR.

I question this offseason. I'm just not sure Mario has anything left after the ACL.
This is all courtesy and respect
Sammo284 : 3/16/2014 7:24 pm : link
I loved what MM did for us here, but this is all a matter of respect to him for what he did here and a courtesy to him. He may very well get a training camp invite type of contract (much like Hillis), but he's not being penciled in as any kind of solution or even depth WR.

Manningham is pretty much finished as an NFL caliber WR. The injuries with SF have done him in, for a guy, who was never the most consistent to begin with.

Wow pretty rough. Guess you are a doctor and have all his medical history records!

Assuming the knee checks out, if you say don't like this move
Mark C : 3/16/2014 7:35 pm : link
then it can't be Manningham that you have a problem with, it has to be Reese. Heres a guy who Eli is super comfortable throwing the ball to, who knows the system, can be plugged right into a WR corps that is depleted with Nick's departure, can go deep, made some of the biggest plays in their last SB run, and can probably be had on a one year/vet minimum deal. And if he somehow forgot how to play football, he can be cut in camp. Please, enlighten me, what could possibly be wrong with this?
what's
Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/16/2014 7:36 pm : link
not clear is why he was put on IR again last year. He tore the ACL and PCL the year before - that's pretty serious. He came back, but was put on IR again. Harbaugh wouldn't say why.

I can only assume he was not yet fully healed and they wanted to see if he could contribute in the playoffs and when they realized he couldn't they shut him down
Giant doctors are busy
Marty866b : 3/16/2014 7:54 pm : link
With the players we have signed and the players we are still looking at it appears our team doctors are on overtime. If the doctors think that Mario and others are ready to play at a high level, then why not? It appears the organization will trust their doctors here. It is surprising how many injured players we have been involved with.
If MM still has speed
mrvax : 3/16/2014 8:07 pm : link
I'd consider him playing in Nicks old position. Stretch that field! Give the coverage something to think about on every play.

Not sure why Anish posted "he isn't productive anymore." He's barely played since leaving NY.
how
blue42 : 3/16/2014 8:15 pm : link
does anyone know what level Mario is at??? He may be 100% now or in two months...who knows. That's why teams have doctors.

Don't put words in my mouth. I have no issue with Reese and have defended him across numerous threads from the resident mouthbreathers. I think he's put together a solid B to B- offseason thus far.

My issue with this hinges on two major factors. First, he's coming off a serious knee injury and he wasnt all that explosive to begin with. His game was predicated on elusiveness and cutting ability. This isnt a guard or DT we're talking about.

Secondly, while he did make some big plays for us, he got by on pure athleticism. How many times did he let himself get run out of bounds and the play would get called back? How many times did we collectively curse him knowing that he ran the wrong route or make a bad read? And while he knew the offense, kind of, it's not the same offense we'll be running next season. That'll be three different offense in 4 years.

If the deal is anything more than a year at minimum, it just seems rather risky to me.

it's very difficult to come back from tearing both your ACL and PCL. Possible yes. But he may never be the same player.

Are you new to our offense? Try watching the countless other times he fucked up. Its on tape its not like this shit is made up. He made two key plays and I am thankful for it. Doesn't mean I want him back .
