Free agent OT Charles Brown will visit the Giants.
Brown can play both left and right tackle and has 22 career starts under his belt, with 14 of those coming in 2013. He gave up seven sacks and 33 hurries as the Saints left tackle in 2013 and was benched in Week 15 after getting lit up by Rams RE Robert Quinn. Brown would likely be the swing man in New York. I always had a feeling that if the Giants traded Barry Cofield Â
For the saints 2nd round draft pick, they would have drafted this big dude. He struggled really bad for the saints last year. He was benched by Sean Payton after he was embarrassed by Robert Quinn, of whom is a BEAST!!! He is a very athletic player. He would make a really nice backup!
Scouting report: Brown's first season as the Saints' starting left tackle ended in ugly fashion. He was benched during the middle of a bad game against the St. Louis Rams and All-Pro pass-rusher Robert Quinn in Week 15. Then he never returned to the lineup after that, as rookie Terron Armstead took over the job.
Up until that point, Brown had been doing a decent job in the role -- some ups and downs, certainly, but nothing to the level of that Rams game. For the season, Brown was credited with either seven or eight sacks allowed (depending on the stat service). And he was flagged for a total of 10 holding or illegal use of hands penalties.
Brown, an athletic lineman who has added some bulk over the years, was a second-round draft pick out of USC in 2010. His first three seasons as a backup were plagued by a variety of injuries -- mostly unrelated. But he stayed healthy last season when he finally got a crack at the starting job, which was a good sign for his future options.
Projection: I think it's safe to assume that Brown will sign elsewhere this offseason, as he will probably want a change of scenery and an opportunity to win a starting job elsewhere. And I think other teams will be interested in his potential since he's still young and has some starting experience under his belt.
Brown probably won't be signed as an immediate starter somewhere else since he'll have to rehab his reputation a little bit in summer camps and the preseason. But I could definitely see him resurrecting his career if he finds the right situation.
If signed will compete for roster spot. Settles nothing. Â
but the Giants are probably waiting for his price to go down and it will as with others they may have in mind...If they lose him, so be it, but I believe they're doing this correctly
he's being looked at to sign as a BACKUP. he's a guy who has previous starting experience at both tackle spots and should come cheap.
there are holes all over the roster still, DE, DT, WR, RB (there is poor depth behind Jennings if Wilson does not play), TE (there are no NFL caliber TE's on the roster), OL.
all of these can't be solved in the draft.
you aren't getting Eric Winston as a backup, nor is there money to sign someone like that as a backup.
Came to USC as a very good blocking tight end. Very good athlete for a tackle and with some good coaching he could be a valuable backup at both OT positions.
And lets not forget on the cheap. 1 year incentive laden contracts Â
I don't know why anyone would hate this news that he is coming in for a visit. Brown has played well at times and he is athletic and still young. He is worth a roster spot to see if Flaherty can coach him up and get him to play to his potential. He would provide solid depth at OT.
"Brown is a good pass protector but lacks a little power to drive in the run game. The latter point is what they pay him for in New Orleans, though. He keeps the Saints' franchise QB upright, and that earns him a solid B grade."
He's Polian's best remaining OT followed by Campbell, drop off to Jason Fox and Andrew Gardner
Charlie Brown is not a guy you want playing at Tackle very long if at all possible.
He said he is athletic, but very inconsistent and too often is overpowered by a bull-rush (not sure of his size) and either gives up the sack or is penalized.
Said he gets penalized a lot with holds and hands to the face almost each game. The game against Quinn was not good, but was the end of the line for him after many bad weeks.
I don't understand why posters say " I wouldn't want him to start but he is okay as a backup". The whole purpose in having a backup is so he can fill in for the starter for a game - or sometimes for the rest of the season.
I could understand it if the guy was a good special teams player but what other value does a lineman have except to play when needed.
I think the difference is "I wouldn't want to rely on him" aka pass on a top OT in the draft because they added him. He actually has some untapped upside giving his physical tools but he's also a guy who you may not want out there over the long haul if he doesn't play up to them.
have to assume the WORST when it comes to a draft pick coming into the NFL. You have to assume that a guy isn't going to be that great until year 2 (obviously there are exceptions) but a mid-round pick usually doesn't come in and play starter caliber in general, especially on the OL.
I am sure the feeling back then was he was not any good and camp fodder. Sometimes change of scenery and new coaches can make a difference. Locklear turned out to be a decent find.
RE: If he was any good, he would probably be off the market by now. Â
And for big bucks. Still, we could use another OT, and if he comes cheap it wouldn't hurt to bring him into camp.
not necessarily.. The Saints center is pretty good and he is still out there.. he carries more risk.. and he might be a better player depending on the blocking scheme.. but if he is young and cheap.. thats good..
I think it would be the swing tackle everyone is wanting on here. We need a good OL for depth. Someone who can come in and start. We can still draft a guy after getting Ebron in the Draft. Im 100 percent sold that Ebron will be the pick . If they sign Finley, maybe they go OL/WR, I still think Ebron is too good to pass up though.
Mara said the "offense is broken" .... that means we are either getting Ebron, Evans, or Lewan. Id find it hard to believe if we went defense in Rd 1. We finished 8th and only got better in FA. Its def going to be an offensive pick at 12.

not necessarily.. There are rounds after Round 1..
The Giants could go defense and still get a good OT/OG, TE or WR in rounds 2-4..
It's exactly the type of guy you want backing up the tackle spot. I love the way they're mostly targeting guys who are 26-28 years old in free agency too. The guy has talent and he could still improve.
I read this on NBC Sports...

no one has signed Chuck even though he can play either Tackle position, was a second round pick, and started most of the season for a playoff team last year. Obviously there are some pretty heavy red flags.
With that said, versatility and athleticism can go a long way if he can pick up the rest of his game and improve our bench-strength...make that create some bench-strength.
Defense gets DRC and the Offense gets Charlie Brown
Locklear came from Washington the season before and quite a few BBIers questioned the widsom of bothering with a reject from a team whose oline suck. Then a poster in that area reported that Locklear had butted heads with the Washington offensive line coach at the time and that they were asking their line to do things a bit differently than most teams which Locklear didn't like.
On that note, the Saints due to Drew Brees shortness, focus more attention on anchoring the middle of the oline against the pass rush to give him lanes and room to step up. Maybe in a different system, Charlie Brown will response better or maybe the Saints system was actually better for him and he couldn't get his head out of his behind

He would be similar to the Locklear move couple years ago.
Basically he could come right in and start at Left Tackle until Will Beatty is ready to go 100%.
If signed I think it shows they have faith in Beatty and Pugh stays at RT and Schwartz at LG. The draft will be focused on Center and Guard.
LOL!
I can't believe Snee is still on the roster.
But, according to the song, he is a clown.
Probably a lot more expensive too.

beatty is still the starter.
Only never-injured All-Pros. But don't overpay. And they have to be from a good team.
I'm still now sold on what we have there..I think they should sign Will Montgomery, whose out on the streets now..

Don't forget, on the right side of 30 as well or is it 27 now?

Brown would be a nice addition
in order-
Jared Allen
Charles Brown
Chris Clemons
Anthony Spencer
Campbell
Thomas DeCoud
Patterson
Brown may be a better player than Beatty. Not ready to say that yet, but he would be nice insurance.
Said he'd rather have Linus out there...
He's got good size, long arms, and he's an athlete. But he is inconsistent. He's not a mauler. In some ways, he a lot like Beatty.
I could understand it if the guy was a good special teams player but what other value does a lineman have except to play when needed.
Yeah, because that strategy has worked so well for us in the last 5 years.

like Beatty...uh oh.
Lets just hope Reese doesn't give Chuck a 5 year $38M deal then...
Camp fodder and competition. Nothing more.

Brown is quick and light on his feet but there are questions about his size and strength. He was 285 as a senior.
Beatty, as we know all too well, struggles with quickness. But he is the size of a house.
With that said, versatility and athleticism can go a long way if he can pick up the rest of his game and improve our bench-strength...make that create some bench-strength.
