Markus Kuhn

Andy in Boston : 3/21/2014 12:16 pm
depending on what the Giants do in the draft or if they decide to sign a veteran DT to a 1 year contract (like Patterson) he could end up being an important part of the d-line this year. He's had a couple of years to develop now since being drafted, recover from his injury, get stronger, etc. The last few pics/videos of him at practice last year, looked like he had beefed up quite a bit from his list 299 lb weight. My guess is he's in the 315 -320lb range now.

Anyone reading or hearing anything about him?
There must be something they really like about his potential

If the Giants have to go into this year with Kuhn as a guy who gets a lot of snaps, there is serious trouble DT

Actually he was pretty good his rookie year.
If Kuhn is having to take meaningful snaps we are in trouble.

Didn't Kuhn, in very limited snaps lead the 2012 ny giants in passes knocked down at the line of scrimmage?
I don't know what he has to offer
BillT : 3/21/2014 12:23 pm : link
And neither does anyone else. He showed well enough as a very raw rookie and was in injury recovery mode last year. However, given that the Giants have not signed a DT, let a starting DT go and currently have Kuhn as the 3rd DT, maybe they know something about him.
assume he plays behind big hank. ...

he did have a good rookie year
bc4life : 3/21/2014 12:25 pm : link
They were pretty high on him and he was playing when well when those around him were not due to various reasons (e.g., Canty - injury).

Then he got hurt. His career was nothing like Marvin Austin's who never showed much of anything.

Probably a decent guy for the rotation. Doubt Rogers will be back, although Jenkins and maybe Patterson will be.

why keep him around as the 5th DT, when they have never had 5 DTs on the roster?

They aren't paying him what they paid Austin. And he did more for the Giants his rookie year than Marvin did his entire time here.

That said, he hasn't showed himself to be starter material thus far.
his good rookie year is a myth
Greg from LI : 3/21/2014 12:28 pm : link
The guy knocked down a few passes. Hurray. He wasn't much of a pass rusher and was often blown off the line in run defense.

Oh, and he's still considered a raw player at age 28.
Kuhn must have shown something to someone
ZogZerg : 3/21/2014 12:29 pm : link
They kept him on the roster all last year even though he didn't play. The again, they kept a bunch a bums at OL so maybe there is an issue somewhere else.
I agree with Greg. Kuhn is a jag at best

project, who made the roster. He actually saw playing time his rookie year. He then suffered a massive injury, and still found his way onto the active roster.

Maybe he'll turn out to be a reasonably solid player. Maybe he won't. But to simply dismiss him at this point, when the coaches have obviously saw something in him, is just idiotic.

It's an important year for him.
It's no myth
bc4life : 3/21/2014 12:37 pm : link
I seriously doubt the Giants staff were happy with his progress based solely on a few batted down passes. If he's in position to bat down passes he's probably doing a fairly effective job of pass rushing. And, he held up well against the run - and again, this is evaluating his performance as a rookie. A rookie who came to the game late - again, he was the 5th DT - they never keep 5 DTs, so there must be something they saw in him.
RE: Kuhn
dguy901 : 3/21/2014 12:39 pm : link
From what I saw of Kuhn, he was effective while in the rotation, stopping the run and rushing the QB. I don't know how much bulk/strength he added or how it effects his quickness or speed but, we would not have kept him around if he were sub-par and his price is right.

Don't agree. Too quick to judge. Not saying he will amount to anything, but he did play reasonably well as a rookie, and the Giants activated him last season despite knowing he probably wouldn't play much. They obviously wanted to keep him for at least one more season. Add in that we let Patterson go, and apparently have no interest in resigning him, which is a mistake IMO.

Kuhn was a seventh round pick who came to football late. A classic Jerry "project" pick. But Ross said the Giants had a fourth round grade on him.

Again, he may not amount to anything, but he's shown enough to justify what the Giants did to keep him for another year. He could be a decent rotational end.
4th round grade on Kuhn...

that is quite optimistic about this guy.

I thought he was a impressive as a rookie, most of the time he was taking on double teams. For a 7th rd project thats great. The FO has kept him over Rogers. I think he has a spot on this team, even if as a rotational player, I think he is very serviceable. I'd like to think he can build on what he started as a rookie despite being out of the game for awhile.
The thing about Kuhn pre-injury
Johnny5 : 3/21/2014 1:23 pm : link
He is stout, very strong with very good leverage. Clearly he also does exactly what they ask of him. He doesn't make flashy plays, but he doesn't get pushed back like he's on roller skates, he holds his POA really well. Great rotational guy if he comes back to his prior form pre-injury.

question mark going into 2014. Let's see how the preseason games shake out. I have no great expectations, but I'm willing to be surprised.
Kuhn is a guy with some potential who is still learning.
Red Dog : 3/21/2014 1:28 pm : link
I fundamentally agree with Greg on LI that he was pretty worthless as a rookie other than a couple of batted down passes. Most of the time he was getting pushed around or was running around chasing the play, which really isn't surprising considering that he was a rookie with limited football background.

But he does show some potential to be a rotational-caliber NFL DT, and as a younger (relatively speaking) and less expensive DL draftee (the GIANTS don't like to give up on draftees), it is no surprise that they kept him around.

This should be the year that we find out if he is a player or a pretender.

Yet, notice that they weren't taken there. Nassib has played about 14 seconds of NFL football but people want to run him out already. And I agree with those that saw some flashes from Kuhn.
I didn't see the stoutness at all

Curtis in VA : 3/21/2014 1:37 pm : link
I can understand why he's still on the team. He's only going into his 3rd year and they are going to give him until the end of his contract to prove whatever they saw in him when they drafted him.

The Danny Ware thing was weird though. Head scratcher.

Johnny5 : 3/21/2014 1:41 pm : link
He is a big dude without being fat, he's strong as well as athletic. I didn't look at him and think Ndamukong Suh.... lol when watching him but when he kept his technique together he was holding his POA really well, even when double-teamed.

I don't want to run Nassib anywhere. I am just making light of the post-draft rhetoric from our Front Office repeated here on BBI. My guess is the Giants have about 50+ players graded for each round even though only 32 are taken in order for these to be true.

He played as a rookie out of necessity due to injury. 2012 was the year the Giants DT situation was horrific, which prompted them to sign Jenkins, Patterson, and Rodgers in the '13 offseason.

Yes, he was supposed to play but didn't. The Giants had Canty, Joseph, Bernard, Austin, and Kuhn on the roster for 2012.

Bernard was mediocre for the parts of the year he wasn't hurt, Canty was hurt for parts of the year, and Joseph played through injuries and had a down year. This pushed them to put Kuhn and Austin on the field.

Develop? What? Film? You develop by playing....he is another prospect that is double teamed all the time?....5 tackles, 4 assists, in 15 games.....some of those tackles must have been awesome....

Another one of those picks that looks like a football player, more than he plays like one.....

As for why he is hanging around?.....the Giants are famous for that.....they have had players on the roster year after year, and then finally cut ties....he certainly looks like one......7th rounders have to make plays to justify them staying on the team.....sticking your hand up hoping the QB hits it, means he should rush only on third down....

These guys who just see him getting pushed back keep forgetting to mention this, and see any value in it ... or if they aren't seeing it, that speaks for itself.

If you can't find a higher draft pick to be an early-hater of, and throw up red flags about, then you are going about your reputation-building as a scout/GM the wrong way. What you should be talking about is how you spotted Austin as a dud and are glad he finally got dumped (and have the threads to prove it).
If Kuhn has fully recovered from his injury, and
The Duke : 3/21/2014 3:05 pm : link
there is no reason to believe he hasn't, I think he is a definite contributor on our DL this year as a rotational tackle. The guy has excellent size, quickness and strength. All he needs is to continue to gain more NFL experience and you can only do that by playing. I think the Giants see much they like in his potential as a back-up DT.

He played well in 2012 in a pinch and is cheap and a very hard worker so it's worth a longer look,he is big so he can stuff the middle and let linebackers do their work.I think the Giants have a tendacy to keep their own too long so they could not be called for a mistake in the draft but not in this case he is a 7th rounder so it's not like we blew a second or third rounder on him.Nobody really knows how good he can be now until we see him this year.I see we have some people here that can give me lotto numbers too,LOL,he is worth the look .He is extremely strong and had a small time with knowledge of the game so his upside when he gets it should be better than most so he defintely is worth a look ,that being said I sign Paterson because I really liked him.
