Graziano: Offensive line: Have Giants done enough?

Offensive line: Have Giants done enough? - ( New Window )
I don't think they've done enough.
Klaatu : 3/24/2014 1:56 pm : link
So let's see what they do in the draft.
let me guess
djm : 3/24/2014 1:56 pm : link
he said no?

Ill read it now and find out.
.
arcarsenal : 3/24/2014 1:56 pm : link
Not yet. Still work to do. Hopefully another 2 OL are coming via the draft.
"Excrutiatingly slow healer"
bc4life : 3/24/2014 1:59 pm : link
Is that accurate? I thought he was recovering from an injury then "getting carried away in the weight room" he injured his back, which in turn, delayed his return to the lineup.
the o-line is still a mess
GiantsFan84 : 3/24/2014 1:59 pm : link
in my mind you can't rely on 3 out of the 5, beatty, snee, Walton.

jerry can back up if not suspended, but you can't rely on mosley either as he has only proven to be injury prone. james brewer should have been cut the first day possible after the season.

even if snee plays well, he is at the end.

if you want to solve the line for years, take both martin's, Zach and marcus, and you will be set. but you can't spend the 1 AND 2 on offensive line.

so I think you go marcus martin in rd 2, and hope beatty can rebound and be the long-term building block you thought he could be 12 months ago.
Fuck no.
AnishPatel : 3/24/2014 2:00 pm : link
3 big question marks. Beatty, Center and Snee. 3/5 of the line I am not comfortable with. A gap strong side, and Eli's backside is a cause for concern. Let's see how we address it.
As of right now no...
chrispisano66 : 3/24/2014 2:02 pm : link
but after spending a top 3 or 4 pick on a G/C that can realistically compete with/beat out Snee or Walton I would say yes.

The other thing I'd like to see is a veteran OT that can provide competition/insurance for Beatty.

I think a lot of BBI thinks Beatty is a bust. I would bet the Giants disagree and are counting on him bouncing back this season. I don't see any reason to think he can't.
Draft...
Andy in Halifax : 3/24/2014 2:02 pm : link
these articles are relatively pointless until after the draft.

If we draft Martin or Lewan in 1, our answer would be different.
Doesn't mention Mosley's injuries
bc4life : 3/24/2014 2:03 pm : link
just dismisses him as having failed at opportunities to play.

Said Boothe and Cordle were in Giant's plans, when everything I've said the Giants had little interest in either.

OL is uncertain - but this article seems poorly researched.
No they need to hit it hard
Phil in LA : 3/24/2014 2:04 pm : link
in the draft. Also, they need to pray to find either another Suebert type in UDFA or another Diehl type in the 5th. But two of their first 3 picks should be OL. That's why I want to trade down a little a pick of an extra day 2 pick, so they can go 2 of 4 on OL, then hit WR and TE, then on day 3 hit RB and both lines some more.
Predicted starting OL will be out of these 6
bc4life : 3/24/2014 2:05 pm : link
Pugh, Schwartz, Walton, Jerry, Martin, Beatty - think that's how things will shake out.
Yes - at least two guys from Draft
Jimmy Googs : 3/24/2014 2:06 pm : link
one at Tackle and one at Guard. Hopefully some versatility from each as well, but these are two CRITICAL picks for the future of this team.

God in heaven above - Beatty, Walton and Snee better be healthy come the end of the summer...
Ask me after the draft
GiantJohn : 3/24/2014 2:09 pm : link

I went into this off season
djm : 3/24/2014 2:09 pm : link
hoping and expecting one legit high priced starter signed and one lesser paid but reliable if unspectacular player signed. Maybe even one more guy with some risk but some reward...

I got my solid player (Schwartz) and I got my risky but decent reward guy (Walton) but no one else worth getting excited over. I'd like one more vet but if they added a big time prospect in the draft I wouldn't complain too much about the OL work they did this off season. But it could be better...

Martin would go a long way.
Haven't done enough
jeff57 : 3/24/2014 2:12 pm : link
Definitely need someone else who can start at LT. Could also use another center.
See Arc
old man : 3/24/2014 2:14 pm : link
and, 1 more in FA.
Not even close to enough.
Rich in L.A. : 3/24/2014 2:19 pm : link
The OL remains the #1 priority IMO. Skill players are irrelevant if we don't block for them or protect the QB.
Lots more
Phil from WNY : 3/24/2014 2:29 pm : link
Schwartz looks like a good signing until you realize that he was a journeyman who played extremely well for half a season. That's in his favor at least but I'd prefer to treat him like a potential weakest link as opposed to a high-priced solution.

I'd love to see them go OT in the first and C/G in the second as long as the talent matches up on both picks.

Apparently only the Jets are allowed to use the draft as wait and see.
Well, we're all in agreement. Of course they haven't.
yatqb : 3/24/2014 2:39 pm : link
Get me two more OL, with at least one taken high in the draft.
Don't forget for a minute how hideous the OL was last year...
x meadowlander : 3/24/2014 2:40 pm : link
...the Giants are very, very fortunate that Eli Manning didn't wind up with a career threatening injury from that insanity.

To me, first round HAS to be OL. I don't care if Clowney himself falls. A repeat of last season could effectively end the Manning era, and I'm not ready for that.
I dunno if OL
chopperhatch : 3/24/2014 2:49 pm : link
Is as important in RD. 1 as it was before we signed who we did. I think it'll depend on whos left on the board at 12. If Lewan is there we had better take him. If hes gone and evans is there I yhink we take him and get a player for OL later on in rd 2. If evans and lewan are gone I think its gotta be martin. Any of those three I love. I do not love ebron at 12 nor barr. Those are wasted picks.

Donald id be ok with too, but 285 is VERY light for a dt. And those of you who say 15 lbs is nothing for a dt, next time you squat your max number, throw 15 more on the bar and see how easily u throw it up.
Only the doctors know for sure (Beatty)
PeterS : 3/24/2014 2:59 pm : link
but not until camp. Everything hinges on his healthy return. If not, we have more work to do either via free agency or the draft. Perhaps even both.
do you really expect the Giants to get OL help in the draft for 2014
twostepgiants : 3/24/2014 3:02 pm : link
The Giants rarely and barely play rookies.

Even if we got another Pugh how much would that help or matter given the pkaying time
last year, Giants paid old, injured guys a ton of money
oipolloi : 3/24/2014 3:14 pm : link
this year, they are paying young injured guys a medium amount of money

that's a big step forward

Have a suspicion
TMS : 3/24/2014 3:23 pm : link
that Beatty having secured a good contract, will not rush back to work. Never thought he was into the game, except for the money to be earned.
I don't see Snee as a definate starter
BillT : 3/24/2014 3:32 pm : link
I think he will be in a fight with Mosley/Schwartz for a starting spot. I don't think they sign Walton if there was any doubt about his healthy.
if the Giants have even a shred of fear that Beatty is a pussy
djm : 3/24/2014 3:37 pm : link
they will definitely be looking at a guy like Zack Martin. I think they are looking at Martin no matter how big a vag Beatty is. Martin just makes a shit load of sense at 12. His versatility and LT abilities would complete the OL rebuild.

LT - Beatty, Martin or Pugh
LG - Schwartz
Center - Walton (Martin can play center?)
RG - Snee, Mosley, Brewer
RT - Pugh or Martin

And we could probably add another guard via the draft.

If Beatty plays like a Man and wrestles the LT job away? Great....we now have three viable tackles on the team assuming Martin can play. Martin slides over to guard or center and this line goes from bad to very good seemingly overnight.

Don't get me wrong I really want an impact player at 12, but Martin would do this OL a world of good. I love that he can play all over the line. It would almost be like they drafted two guys with one pick. And he can play LT so the value is there.
If Beatty is the goods
djm : 3/24/2014 3:38 pm : link
LT - Beatty
LG - Schwartz
Center - Martin or Walton
RG - Martin or Snee or Mosley
RT - Pugh

Not until they get someone who can beat out Snee for
Curtis in VA : 3/24/2014 3:39 pm : link
the other Guard spot. No guarantees on Walton either. Hoping for someone else to come in and compete with him other than Reynolds..
For me if any of the big 3 OT's
geemanfan : 3/24/2014 3:43 pm : link
Are still on the board you take them but after that I would wait. I would still draft Evans, Ebron and Donald before I drafted Martin. Chopper I hear what your saying about Donald but the kid did lead the nation in tackles for a loss and I think he would be a good fit in our system. If the Giants did take Martin over those 3 guy's, I wouldn't be shocked either . He seems to be a pretty safe pick.
no. still a glaring donut at Center. Walton cannot be counted
Victor in CT : 3/24/2014 4:03 pm : link
on at this point. Beatty a ? and still a health issue.
Graziano?
Rflairr : 3/24/2014 4:15 pm : link
No need to click on it. I'm sure its all negative
people here are saying not enough have to go via draft
micky : 3/24/2014 4:20 pm : link
Yet, i see threads going/wanting to go with TE's, DE's/DT's, or DB's etc in top 3 or 4 rds of draft???
and, oh yeah..a WR
micky : 3/24/2014 4:21 pm : link
.
If they
NJGiantFan84 : 3/24/2014 4:26 pm : link
draft a good C & a Guard who seems to be a year away, I'll be happy w/ the O-Line. they invested a lot into Beatty and I don't expect them to give up on him yet. Plus if they can upgrade around him, he may get back to form as well.
Nope not at all
Eddie From Toronto : 3/24/2014 4:31 pm : link
I think Mosely is eh, but good for depth...Let's get beyond the draft first. I think we come out of the 2014 NFL Draft with 2 OL, but can they be ready to start? I don't like the idea of bringing back Snee.
Correct that
Eddie From Toronto : 3/24/2014 4:32 pm : link
I don't like the idea of bringing back Snee to be a starter

waiting 27 seconds...8
No they have not..
prdave73 : 3/24/2014 5:04 pm : link
Unfortunately IMO they still need to get a LT, the most important position on the online! I really didn't want them to use a 1st rd on one , but right now it's looking like that might be their only choice. I wish they would have addressed it in FA due to having so many other needs. I think the Giants are ok right now with what they have online wise except the LT position. You cannot experiment with the LT as we have learned in the past. Really hope we can use the 1st for Dt or wr
...
christian : 3/24/2014 5:10 pm : link
I would absolutely love to see the Giants wait it out and make an offer to De La Puente. If you can structure the contract to avoid a huge cap hit this year, he can be had. He obviously isn't ready to bite on a prove-it deal, he's already proven it. He's an upper half center who should be paid well not great.
I don't think they have, but the line they probably intend to start
Riggies : 3/24/2014 5:10 pm : link
the season with is already set.

Pugh-Snee-Walton-Schwartz-Beatty

... and it won't be remotely surprising when their OL performs poorly yet again. I'm just hoping they'll be slightly less so than 2013.
What about Value in Rds. 2-4?
HugeS : 3/24/2014 5:47 pm : link
What about getting O-line in 2nd and 3rd round? After watching tape of Robinson, Matthews, Lewan, and Martin there seems to be a huge drop off in performance from the top 2. Lewan seems to have gotten alot of hype from his spectacular combine but his tape makes him look like an nfl penalty machine with tons of holds, facemasks, and less than stellar knee bend when anchoring. Yeah he's nasty but the elite athleticism doesn't show on tape. Martin looks solid but nothing spectacular. Who would you go after in 2nd and 3rd rounds if the big two are gone? Who do you think is getting overlooked in the conversation?
The problem I see with waiting until after round 1
Jimmy Googs : 3/24/2014 6:07 pm : link
to start addressing the O-line is that the guys will likely not be able to contribute much in 2014.

First round guys have a learning curve anyway but at least NFL teams are willing to plug them in as rookies.

And if we need two O-line rookies to step up and play next season (b/c of injuries), it would be prudent that they are our first two picks.
Martin * 2
Reale01 : 3/24/2014 6:33 pm : link
Zak Martin in first and the center from USC (Martin-2)in the third with a WR or TE in the second and a WR or TE in the fourth. Two defenders in the 5th. Anyone who went to Rutgers in the 6th to keep BBI happy. No Hokies to keep Greg happy.
Agree but...
HugeS : 3/24/2014 6:37 pm : link
The reason I bring this up is that after the first 2 I see a whole lot of question marks. Matthews and Robinson look like plug and play starters, Robinson with his tremendous raw power and huge upside, Matthews with high caliber starting level technique and footwork. After that it looks like you could make the case for or against a bunch of different players based on combines, pro days, game tape, scheme fit, etc. Its just not that clear cut after those two as people seem to be making it out to be. Combine measurables aside look at game tapes of Yankey, Moses and Kouandjio among others and tell me that they don't look as dominant/effective as Lewan or Martin. I watched a lot of Stanford tape and was actually shocked how consistently good Yankey looked against some top competition which obviously was not reflected in his very pedestrian combine/pro day numbers.
...And
HugeS : 3/24/2014 6:47 pm : link
I'd add that I much prefer Martin to Lewan as a pro prospect. Like his versatility and the fact he really doesn't have any glaring holes in his game. He does resemble Pugh quite a bit, a solid guy with good technique. Not sold on Lewan at all.
Have the Giants Done Enough?
M.S. : 3/24/2014 7:36 pm : link

OK, guys. You know the fire drill.

Jerry Reese neglected the offensive line in the past 3 drafts.

And it finally came back to bite him in the ass... and our asses too, with one of the most pathetic Giants offenses I've seen in 50+ years of watching Giants football.

And, then, we grab two middling FAs is Schwartz and J.D. Walton when our O-line is crying out for plus-talent at Tackle, Guard and Center.

We are going with premium O-line draft selections this year and next, and then hold your breath (and pray for Eli) that Reese has selected well.

Totally rethinking this
shabu : 3/24/2014 7:53 pm : link
I think the giants are on a 2 year rebuild... if you think about it, even though we are not sure of our OL at this point, and with the assumption that we are going to get some OL in draft

by 2015 the team is looking pretty solid on paper.
