Do you have any thought as to why Adrien Robinson hasn't broken through on the TE Depth Chart? We seem to keep burning through 1-2 year trial guys since Shockey was let go, with Brandon Myers being the latest 1-year stop-gap. I had hoped Robinson would garner some playing time in 2013.
-Joe
Dear Joe:
Adrien Robinson has been held back by a couple of circumstances. As a rookie, he missed most of the spring practices because he was completing his academic requirements at Cincinnati. He never really caught up and played in just two games. Last year he was off the field for much of the spring because of a foot injury. It took a while to regain his health and when he did, the Giants had set a rotation without him. Robinson finally got on the field at Detroit on Dec. 22– and suffered a season-ending knee injury on the opening kickoff. He has to get on the field and produce once he gets there. He’ll get another opportunity this year.
The free agency market is bare at this point, obviously if Finley would be cleared or a TE is waived for salary cap reasons he certainly would look into it...but to come out and say...not pursuing FA help would let everyone know he is drafting one early...not smart.

Reports from UNC pro day indicate Eric Ebron having some drop issues...but he's still going top 20 on May 8.
Art Stapletonþ@art_stapleton·2 mins
RT @Schottey: Ebron had some early drops in 35-degree weather at a pro day, cue the people who question his hands.
Dickson has hands issues:
Elsayed PFF: Sig Stats: Drop Rate, TEs
"Down at the other end of things Ed Dickson didn’t help his free agent stock by dropping five of the 30 catchable balls thrown his way. An in-line blocker who struggles in this regard, there was little surprise when the Ravens opted to let him hit the open market after a number of opportunities spurned."
A TE with bad hands and is a below average blocker Â
BC tight end Mike Naples, who is originally from jersey
26 reps, 34" vert and a 6.79 3-cone at pro day. played in a run 1st offense but surprised with his hands and route running at workout, where he also long and short-snapped
Started talking about Donnell then brought up Robinson:
Thought Donnell had the most long range potential...but wasn't able to step up, mentally way behind, injuries set him back, not from pro-style offense, can't put eggs in his basket...then Dottino said, I'd know Jerry Reese won't like this but he (Donnell) might be the only TE I'd want to come back to training camp, I'm not a Adrien Robinson guy...

His drop rate was over 11% in college. Observations "yes" but shouldn't be news for those on twitter.
You could probably get Lyerla in the 7th or as an UDFA. We don't have a 7th so we'd have to hope he goes undrafted. With his past issues that is a good possibility. The kid is very talented. If he could keep his head on right, he could be a weapon in this offense. He's a TE in the mold of a Hernandez. Problem is he may be a knucklehead in the mold of Hernandez too.
you mean the guy who caught 30-35 passes and dropped 5? The guy who can't nlock to sve his life? That Ed Dickson? Yes, makes a lot of sense
Finley can't block either. Neither can Graham. This is not your grandfathers nfl anymore.
And we're scraping the bottom of the barrel if we got the FA route. Dickson is young and has produced in the past. If we go with a FA, he makes the most sense.
30 balls thrown his way and he drops 5..Isn't that nearly a 20% drop rate?
I wouldn't even go after Finley with his dropsies, even if his neck checked out..
Sample size. Also I think drops are overrated. I'd rather have Dickson and his drops and ability to make an occasional play rather than say Pascoe and his surehandedness and ability to make no plays.
Getting open, making some plays after the catch and getting the defenses attention outweigh the occasional drop.
the more I like Marcel Jensen. Link - ( New Window )
Like him a lot, although admittedly that is from a very small sample. But I think you'll have to take him in the third, which would be fine IMO.
As far as Lyerla is concerned, my guess is that somebody takes a chance on him on day three. The Giants just signed Jerry, which may indicate a willingness to go after someone like Lyerla. Or Jerry may have used up their "quota" in that regard. What's concerning of course is that he quit his team, and has the bust for cocaine. When I asked about him a few weeks ago, somebody mentioned that he was caught with scales, which sounds like pretty serious involvement.
Also watch for A.C. Leonard. Great 40 time. Left Florida after a domestic altercation with his girlfriend, but is still a day three prospect. The Giants met with him.
you attempt to make your points on other topics..Very selective..Stop arguing just for the sake of it. Do you know HOW MANY times you quote stats to make your point? Somehow sample size is not germane in those cases
Five drops in 30 opportunities does not prove someone has bad hands. Do you have his career numbers? And again, drops are overrated. And also again, we're scrapping the bottom of the barrel. There's not an un flawed TE out there.
Who is your choice if the Giants sign a FA TE? Whoever Reese decides to sign?
They were hoping he'd step up when Pitta went down, but he failed miserably.
I'd rather not sign a free agent TE just for the sake of signing one, no matter how crappy our TE corps is. I'm not ready to write Robinson off just yet, but I still hope the Giants draft a good TE prospect.
TEs are garbage. Better off saving our money and drafting 1 of them and see if AR can actually contribute.
I would imagine we will spend that money after the league's final pre-season cuts because it is difficult to imagine Robinson & Donnell and a rookie draft pick getting the job done.
Denver signed a number of free agent TEs last year. Â
but the whole offense that played had over inflated stats. And those TEs are average. I wouldn't want them on my team, and we have jack shit right now.
Better question. How smart is it to bank on a project pick when our history of project picks with Reese isn't good? Do you think that's an efficient move?
Sure, AR could be like you said and blow people way, but do you go into the season thinking that shit can happen, and thus not draft a TE? My point is pretend those TEs won't do well, and address the position. IF, and I mean IF, other guys raise their game, then good! That's fucking good! We want that shit to happen. If not, then no loss because, I can speak for myself, I didn't expect AR to do shit.
We didn't have a starting TE in the Spring of 2011, either..

Until a kid from the PS made the most of an opportunity that came his way and helped us win a championship.
Also, and it's a cliché, I know, but the draft isn't only about this year, although I wouldn't put it past Jerry Reese to see TE as our biggest immediate need and draft accordingly in the 1st round. That's been his M.O. for the past seven years.
I just don't see what Ebron brings to the table that other TE prospects don't, outside of a marginal increase in straight-line speed? For the life of me, I just don't see why he's worth the 12th pick in this draft? But, as I said, that's just me.
I want the Giants to draft a good TE prospect. I don't want them to spend the 12th pick of the draft on Eric Ebron. If they do, so be it.
Anything less is a gross misuse of resources for a team with many holes to fill and much talent on the board.
I think he can be shockey or better. In this system, from what BM says that he will adapt the system to the players we have, I think he can be as productive.
"Jerry there are rumors that you are considering signing Â
Every TE gets open whether it is Witten, Dickson, Graham or Myers. Defenses do not play the TE no matter who it is. Get the Iowa TE in the 3rd as a good value and go from there
Finley can't block, has suspect hands and is not healthy. Dickson can't block and has suspect hands. Ebron can't block and has suspect hands. amaro liked up off the LOS 90% of the time - does he really know how to play the TE position
Get a guy with size to block and he will get open. Boss, Ballard, Bennett and even Myers were open - often
would be the correct draft choice if selecting a TE.
[CBS Sports:]
STRENGTHS: Good versatility, showing the ability to come off a down block to get past defenders as a receiver. Good body control and soft hands for such a large man, traits that have led Washington junior Austin Seferian-Jenkins to earn a lot of attention as a possible first-round pick. Fiedorowicz isn't as flashy as ASJ, but he's just as big and fast in a straight-line and is a much more physical and attentive blocker.
I am very concerned if Adrien Robinson was behind as a rookie because he was attending to academic requirements. I would expect a recently employed player to be concentrating on football, and focus on school the next off-season. Am I reading that Eisen quote wrong?
Now that I can get behind. I think Lyerla is as talented and can potentially be as impactful as any of these guys.
If he can get his shit together, I think he might be a steal. But I think some team will take a shot at him earlier than the 5th. Too high a ceiling there. I can easily see him going early 3rd round.

Exactly. He should never have been drafted that high, if they knew of his academic issues.

That's debatable. I think Fiederowicz is a good TE. But I think Niklas will be a better pro and is probably the most complete TE in the draft.

Did he produce, or was he a case of 'damn, I'm glad we didn't pay him?'
