[Y]ou can't run from the fact that this team that hates to build through free agency...
Yeeaahh...the team that signed Shaun O'Hara, Antonio Pierce, Plaxico Burress, Kareem McKenzie, Kawika Mitchell, Madison Hedgecock, Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard, Antrel Rolle, Michael Boley, David Baas...they just hate building through free agency.
Graziano, I hope your ancestry isn't Sicilian. You're a disgrace.
Behind this article. So if we did nothing or just signed one major guy like Mack that would translate to an "A"? Honestly I don't see how you can grade a free agent class anyway. We had obvious holes on our roster and I think we have done a solid job putting players who are young and aren't breaking the bank with decent to pretty good upside.
We're doing now what we should have begun two years ago.
We'll get more bodies via the draft. Camp should be interesting since we have new coaches, a new offensive scheme and many new faces. Old stalwarts are gone and new blood has come.
Competition will breed success. We just need our OL to run block well enough early and for Eli to play conservative as he and the offense learn this new scheme. The defense will likely be solid out of the gates so we need them to win us the early games.
I think if get "lucky" in the draft and with camp injuries, we could be competitive this season.
He says about the Giants, "But you can't run from the fact that this team that hates to build through free agency correctly identified that it had no other choice this year..."
So the Giants, seeing their needs, step out of the box and are aggressive in FA unlike usual. And this gets them a C+? Would they get a C+ if they saw all these needs and didn't step out of the box. Isn't this what good teams do? They do what they have to get better no matter what they've done before.
Then he wraps with this, "The Giants did what they could, and a portion of what they needed to do, which was a lot."
So they stepped outside of the box and did a lot but that's a C+. So dumb.
Does anyone consider this an excellent free agency group?
Let's be honest with ourselves. Outside of 3-4 players (I personally think Thurmond will be outstanding) this is not a group we would have liked a few years ago, and we still have a lot of holes to fill and a lot of questions, even with our FAs.
well in FA. Plugged as many holes as possiible with the $ they had. Also shit-canned guys who didn`t have it anymore. Since they couldn`t afford Mack, I give them a B+.
I do not feel all warm and fuzzy with signing 19 free agents. It's more a reflection of the shit roster Reese created and the pressure he feels to salvage his job. Not to mention signing everyone that can put on a helmet rarely works out as a positive come the season.
DRC, Jennings, Schwartz, Beason, Thurmond are all good players who were signed to reasonable contracts. Isn't that what you want in FA? Only the top 4 were signed for 3 years or more. The rest are 1/2 year contracts with little guaranteed money. And they have cap room next year as well.
We have no idea what Schwartz is because he didn't start many days..Bill Polian didn't even have him ranked that high as a G..Walton been out of play for 2 years..
So i would have graded it a C to because what they need most was to add some players to the OL..what they added was more question marks..
Giants did a lot of bet hedging. They signed guys with tons of upside for team friendly deals (mostly). They did a very good job this free agency. Now does that mean they are winning the Super Bowl? No. But to not recognize that they did an above average job is absurd. A "B" is probably more accurate.
he basically re-hashed what Charlie Casserly said recently: the Giants have drafted poorly in recent years and it's out of character for them to sign so many FAs.
Casserly was correct about recent poor drafts- Reese and Ross both guilty of gross incompetence in that regard.
BUT, what would he have Reese do now? Reese had no choice but to sign all of these FAs and hope that he's successful on all or most of them.
Finally, the Seahawks just won the SB. For the 2011 and 2012 seasons, they engaged in 502 transactions- draftees, trades, and signing Fas and UDFAs. I don't care how many FAs and UDFAs that Reese signs if he duplicates the Seahawks' success.
record in signing FA that work out well, is not that good. His record in the draft is not that good either. Fans and management always think they did well. We have to wait and see.
I still have a lot of trouble understanding why there are so many
holes in a roster two years from a Super Bowl win.
I'll never understand why the released Rich Seubert just before training camp in 2011. The previous year he had been named an SI All Pro, called the team MVP by Reese, and most importantly, was BBI Giant of the Year. But he probably wouldn't have made it to this season unless free from injuries.
Osi? They thought they had JPP, but suddenly they didn't. Osi's mediocrity against the run not that important in a passing league when you have a guy who can make the QB constantly worried about his blind side. Osi also has 35 career forced fumbles in 10 seasons compared to, say, Demarcus Ware who has 32 ffs in 9 seasons. Osi had three last season to go with his pick 6.
Boley would have been an improvement on any of our linebackers until Beason came. Boley would now be 2nd best linebacker. Corey Webster was very respected in 2011 as the Giants' number one CB. Two years later he's given the bum's rush.
I know that there is a lot of second guessing here, but it doesn't make sense that our whole roster is full of holes so soon after a championship.
Comparing Osi to DeMarcus Ware? Really? Osi made a few plays, but let's not kid ourselves. He showed up against sub .500 teams and that's it. Any team with a decent tackle or talent on the offensive side, he was nowhere to be found. I would probably agree that the FA class is about a C+. We signed one competent O lineman (we think), A decent nickel corner (we think), a potentially good CB (depends which version of DRC shows up), and linebackers who are getting a bit long in the tooth. We still have major question marks on the interior line, Left Tackle, Tight End and Defensive Tackle.
RE: I still have a lot of trouble understanding why there are so many
holes in a roster two years from a Super Bowl win.
Kyle is correct. It was only a handful of players and Coughlin's amazing head coaching that won SB46. Pure guts and drive on the part of a lot of guys, even marginal ones.
There are only so many good players available in FA.
There is only so much cap space available.
There are plenty of other teams that have more cap space than the Giants to sign those good & expensive players.
There are only so many holes that can be filled in one free agency period.
This free agency period isn't even over yet.
People bitch if the Giants keep older, often injured players too long.
People bitch if the Giants release older, often injured players too soon.
People bitch that the Giants didn't sign the very best center & the very best guard & the very best running back & the very best (fill in the spaces) even though the cost of just one of those players would've prevented them from signing several more players to fill several more holes.
If they had signed Mack & other assorted extremely expensive players, people would bitch that Reese spent to much on them & complain that he didn't fill enough holes.
The group think on here makes me chuckle. I think he is a good and measured writer, and what he is saying here is right on. Signing this many FAs shows how bad off they were after several poor drafts.
Graziano hit on the head when he wrote this back in Sept. the week after the Giants were routed by Carolina:
Quote:
This isn't a 2013 problem. This is deep-seated, foundational rot. And the Giants aren't getting any better any time soon.
I don't disagree with Graziano more often than other writers
...given the Giants still have one of the VERY WORST offensive lines in the NFL.
Make that the SEC as well.

ps I'm pretty sure Jerry Reese is untouchable for at least a couple of years, but if this O-line stays at the bottom of the league his ass can get fired too!
of reading how disappointing many of the free agent signings have been. or how is it possible to have so many holes in the lineup?? or how could the team be so terrible so soon after a superbowl winning season?
first things first. nobody has a clue how the FA class will be until they get on the field. and that's going to take a while. speculate all you want, but until i see them knocking heads - in pads - i'm prepared to give the scouts and GM the benefit of the doubt. this is a guessing game. unfortunately, its largely crap shoot and that can be frustrating to those of us on the sidelines. everyone in this league can play - its how they're used and coached that makes the difference
next...holes. every team has holes, folks. injuries can exacerbate the situation (and potentially ruin a season) but holes are an inevitable fallout of free agency. players get good and usually they leave to get paid. not complicated. its part of the cycle. if you have a beef with that, blame the CBA. the unusual teams look far enough ahead into the crystal ball and roll the dice with inexperienced and cheap(er) talent. but they are few and far between.
finally, superbowl fall off. gee - let's look: the ravens had an awesome season last year, right? the saints haven't been wonderful. the steelers have struggled as have the pack. its not an unusual phenomenon. winning the trophy is fucking hard and there's usually a lot of luck involved.
there are THREE teams in this league that has won more superbowls than the giants. and one of those has won a single measly playoff game in 17 seasons.
although its not nearly as much fun, i'd prefer to be patient and cautiously optimistic for at least another month and a half. then we can all start trashing the draft
to really get worked up about him. In 2011, after the four game losing streak, he gave the Giants no chance at all of winning the Super Bowl right up to the final snap.
And that really doesn't seem like a ridiculous opinion, after the four game losing streak even though the streak included three of the best teams in the league, two of them on the road, and followed a victory in Foxboro against the Patriots.
But there was a lot of bitterness towards Graziano by Giant fans. When the Giants won, he was justifiably embarrassed and feels a little redeemed by every Giant loss now. I don't see any harm in beating on a hostile beat writer.
For all those who are upset by all the whining and complaining,
I apologize for caring about how the team does this year. After all, it's just a silly game.
In my very humble opinion, I think that the Giants are having one of their worst off-seasons. In a nearly hopeless attempt at giving Coughlin one more shot at the Super Bowl, they are spending, according to Jerry, the most ever in free-agency to sign a bunch of journeymen discards from other teams. I would argue that they should spend the money on two or three players who are among the best at their position this year, and the same next year.
But I could easily be wrong. Jerry may be signing a bunch of Kareem McKenzies, Kawika Mitchells, Michael Boleys and Deon Grants.
He and Akamura give the Giants solid corners. I like Rolle and Hill to start at safety. This secondary could be quite special with its depth.
We signed "middle of the pack" guys at fairly good prices. The goal here is to take what is out there to plug holes.
If we have a good draft and our UFAs stay healthy and produce adequately this team could take a big leap up. That isn't saying too much considering our offense SUCKED last year.
I mean, didn't the Giants need to purge what we had and start anew? We can cut the majority of our signed guys next year if we had to without much of a cap hit.
Was run stopping. We just let our two best linemen against the run walk, and we added a bunch of unknown quantities plus one proven cornerback. It is not self-evident that the team is now better.
I agree we lost two of our better run defending lineman but we did upgrade at LB too. We'll see how the draft goes. Heck, maybe a veteran DL comes loose June 1.

The next time you & literally dozens of Reese's Pieces BBI clones say even ONE thing positive about anything regarding the Giants will be the first & then you'll all probably drop dead immediately from the shock. You & they will find something to bitch, moan & complain about regardless what Reese does or doesn't do or how well the team plays or doesn't play. You folks really don't need to post anything because everyone expects & gets the same doom & gloom Chicken Little shit every single post.
And for those who'll tell me not to read any of these Chicken Littles' posts, I'd need to constantly refer to a list half a mile long to avoid reading all of them. The ignore feature can't happen soon enough. It's a feature on every single other forum I've ever been on , so it shouldn't be that hard to implement.
what you call the chicken little posters because you act like you're coming from a moral high ground supporting the organizations unequivocally and actively stifle any criticism of the team, preferring to live in a little wonderland where the Giants can do no wrong.

Dafuq you talking about. What moral high ground? This is football.
I've been plenty critical of Reese. He's had 2 poor drafts back to back. He's not doing the bulk of the scouting, but he's the shot caller and ultimately gets the blame when these picks dont pan out. I've also been critical of the Hillis and Jerry signings.
That being said, Reese is the only GM in the NFL to deliver two championships in a decade. I'll defer to his judgement because he clearly has more experience in building a winner than I do.
Reese's Pieces has incessently knocked every single move the guy has made since letting Steve Smith walk badly down the turnpike. Its fucking tiresome. And embarassing. And undeserving of the success we as fans have enjoyed these last 8 seasons.
It isn't pollyannas vs. realists circa '97. It's people who live to bitch and moan vs. the rest of us who get that there's a finite cap and 31 other teams who want to win too. And that it's fucking hard. I fully expect you to miss the point. As you usually do. Cuz you're a dope.

first things first. nobody has a clue how the FA class will be until they get on the field. and that's going to take a while. speculate all you want, but until i see them knocking heads - in pads - i'm prepared to give the scouts and GM the benefit of the doubt. this is a guessing game. unfortunately, its largely crap shoot and that can be frustrating to those of us on the sidelines. everyone in this league can play - its how they're used and coached that makes the difference
next...holes. every team has holes, folks. injuries can exacerbate the situation (and potentially ruin a season) but holes are an inevitable fallout of free agency. players get good and usually they leave to get paid. not complicated. its part of the cycle. if you have a beef with that, blame the CBA. the unusual teams look far enough ahead into the crystal ball and roll the dice with inexperienced and cheap(er) talent. but they are few and far between.
finally, superbowl fall off. gee - let's look: the ravens had an awesome season last year, right? the saints haven't been wonderful. the steelers have struggled as have the pack. its not an unusual phenomenon. winning the trophy is fucking hard and there's usually a lot of luck involved.
there are THREE teams in this league that has won more superbowls than the giants. and one of those has won a single measly playoff game in 17 seasons.
although its not nearly as much fun, i'd prefer to be patient and cautiously optimistic for at least another month and a half. then we can all start trashing the draft
Good post.
