Still can't watch Giants-49ers wild card game

Keyser : 3/30/2014 3:09 am
Had NFL network on in the background while going through receipts. I hear what sounds like a game and mentioning the Giants. Oh good, Id love to watch a classic Giants win. Then I look and its against the 49ers. Gee, its 49ers dynasty week, why would they be showing a Giants-49ers game. Then it dawns on me ... its the 49ers-Giants can't snap for a field goal try choke game :-( I just can't watch it or even have it on in the backgroun. I flipped it onto ESPN instead.

Am I the only one?
I would never
MookGiants : 3/30/2014 3:20 am : link
watch it all the way through, but after XLII, I put that loss behind me as a fan. Then it was completely buried when we went in there in January of 2012 and won the National Football Conference championship.

Without that game, team doesn't completely collapse the following year and Giants don't get Eli/Coughlin, so there was a positive that came out of it.
what a bad loss
oipolloi : 3/30/2014 3:27 am : link
I had just moved to CA and was watching it with 49ers fans. Just awful. I could barely contain my frustration.

To this day, I really don't like Sehorn because he was so bad in that game, even though he had previously been one of my favorites.

Shockey not scoring the TD. The botched snaps. The missed call on defensive holding against Seubert. So many things that did not have to happen.
that game was one
evaluator : 3/30/2014 3:35 am : link
of the most poorly officiated games to see in the 21st century so far.the amount of crap the 49ers got away with in the 2nd half was unreal.to me,it was not so much of a meltdown or choke as the refs handing s.f. the game....but I see the o.p.'s point-I can only watch til about 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter...:(
The only Giant loss I have interest in watching is the game
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2014 3:36 am : link
New England went 16-0. That game was special like no other to me.
It is like part 1 of a great 3 part movie.
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2014 3:40 am : link
the other two parts of course are the Super bowl wins against New England.
I would really hate the Giants if I was a Patriot fan.
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2014 3:44 am : link
How much it must have hurt to lose those games. But being a Yankee fan I have no sympathy for Boston fans.
If the Patriots win those two games
oipolloi : 3/30/2014 5:00 am : link
Brady and BB both have five rings and go down respectively as the greatest QB and coach in history.

Giants robbed them of their place in football history. Next step is to surpass them. I really believe Eli has two more championships left in him.
I had surgery after SB42 and the surgeon was a Pats fan.

LOL-sounds like risky business, don't imagine I would have pressed the issue had I been in your shoes.
Dude.

You need to watch a SB42 to get the memory of this game out of your head.

It's a 4 part movie. We beat them in the 2011 regular season in Foxboro (where they were assumed to be invincible) on a last-second game winning drive and Brady said "Thank God we'll never have to play them again". And we know how that season ended, LOL

It was an extremely dark day in giants history.
I can't and wont watch it either.
truebluelarry : 3/30/2014 7:24 am : link
I haven't watch the NFL Films production of it either, even though I realize it is probably well done.

I few years ago the NFL Network was showing the Giants-Dallas 1993 season finale over and over and over relentlessly. One night, just out of curiosity I watched the first five minutes. The Giants went three-and-out and I shut it off. It was making me nauseous (I was at that game, one of my worst drives home ever.)
I am still

not over Macho Grande :)
That was the most painful loss ever.....
Dry Lightning : 3/30/2014 7:37 am : link
but some previous posters are right, that led to Eli and Coughlin. Great life lesson about how bad things sometimes can lead to good ones.
That game was truly like a nightmare.
Crispino : 3/30/2014 7:42 am : link
Unstoppable, inevitable car wreck of a second half. I actually balled up in the fetal position on the floor of my living room after the last play. It physically hurt. Worst loss, ever for me. Worse than the SB loss to Baltimore because of the reversal of fortune.
I don't know if I could pick the worse loss in the Giants history that
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2014 7:54 am : link
I actually watched. There have been some horrific losses to the Eagles for sure and a playoff loss to the Rams years ago, plus those mentionted above. No I don't think I could pick judt one.
Yikes
wgenesis123 : 3/30/2014 7:56 am : link
my spelling or typing went south on that one.
It was a cool come from behind win
NINEster : 3/30/2014 7:58 am : link
but Niner fans knew the week after was a loss.

Did the Giants' fans get that memo too, or was this another "lost ring"?

I had it on too ... watched until Giants had their big lead
baadbill : 3/30/2014 8:14 am : link
and then turned it off ...
Came home from work the other day

and saw the last 3 plays. Brought me right back to being 19 years old at the Quay restaurant and watching the wheels come off the bus, felt horrible for weeks about that one. To me this is was an even worse loss than XXXV. At least we had the huge win against Minn and the excitement of getting to the big game. Also, for XXXV it never felt like we were in the game. That damn wildcard game we had them, and we let them off the hook! But like previously mentioned XLII erased the pain of that day, and now looking back it almost seems like a necessary step to get that next ring.
Why watch that? Just watch the 90 or 2011 NFCC instead
jcn56 : 3/30/2014 8:53 am : link
Much better outcomes.
Had a Niner fan tell me
SalTony56 : 3/30/2014 9:45 am : link
He cant watch the 90' Championship game (3 peat).
I watched the "A Football life" on Joe Montana, and I can watch the Jim Burt and Leonard Marshall Hits over and over and over and over again....:)

in central jersey on the weekends while I was in college. Watched the game with some patrons, and just drove home in (what I remember as) light snow or rain, just deflated. So many chances to win. Shockey, as usual, brought more bluster than performance.

I truly believe our offense was the only one who could put up points on the 02 bucs that year. We had the perfect recipe for beating that cover 2 with Shockey, that is if he wasn't dropping a pass or being a shithead. We were also red hot on a 4 game winning Then again our defense was decimated. I don't think we lose 31-6 or whatever happened to SF in that game.

The 06 loss to the titans was personally worse for me.
Watching those heartbreaks

Are just rubbing salt in the wounds. I can't imagine why I'd ever want to relive them.
I've never seen anything like that collapse before or since.

Geez me and my dad were so pissed at the time. It ruined not only the weekend but the entire week following.
All i remember is that we were going to the SB...

We were on fire towards the end of the season as my memory serves...

Horrible loss, Probably the worse i remember..
I very much doubt
MookGiants : 3/30/2014 1:16 pm : link
that we would have beaten the Bucs. That defense was a historically great defense, they weren't just some good defense. Giants were hot, but they were also hot going into super bowl 35 and Kerry Collins played like he was scared shitless in that game after playing perfect the week before.
That 02 Giants offense was a
crick78 : 3/30/2014 1:35 pm : link
"between the 20's" offense. It was horrible in the redzone. As for Shockey, his stat line wasn't great 7-68 1td, but he opened up the game for amani toomer. The 49ers went into that game thinking they could single cover him. That proved to be incorrect, more bluster than performance from Shockey in that game? I can't agree with that line of thinking.

If i were betting objectively, the bucs win that game 7/10 times. I just can't help but think we had one of the few pieces to counter what made them so good. we'll never know.

As far as XXXV, Fassell implemented the game plan too early, and the team was just unprepared. That ravens D was better than the 02 bucs. Even if the Armstead pick 6 doesn't get called back, we probably still lose.
Shockey doesn't
bluepepper : 3/30/2014 2:20 pm : link
drop that pass, it's 42-14. Game over. I remember when it happened I got a bad vibe. Tried to tell myself it didn't matter but of course, very quickly it became apparent that it did. Once the Niners cut it to 38-30, I knew we were doomed.
After watching
bluepepper : 3/30/2014 2:23 pm : link
the Bucs dismantle everyone on their run to the Super Bowl, the loss bothered me a bit less. That day, though, I thought they had blown a shot at a big run. The offense was just playing so well at the end of that aeason.
Literally dropped my one year old

I was still a young sports fan
BestFeature : 3/30/2014 4:17 pm : link
I haven't seen much playoff success of any of my teams. In fact outside of the 2000 run which was really before I was a real fan but got me into it, I didn't see one series or round win for any of my teams. I was more proud of the Giants for having a 38-14 lead at any point than I was upset about the loss. Nowadays I'd be crushed.

I didn't remember or realize is that the muffed snap happened on 3rd down. With 6 seconds left the holder just needed to spike the ball and try again on 4th down.
Just watched Super Bowl XLII
Eddie From Toronto : 3/30/2014 4:42 pm : link
last night. What a game. The defense front four was great. Love that fake out by Mitchell (the LB) who acted as if he was going to drop back into coverage but headed straight up the A gap and got the sack. He also got pressure on the QB on another play, I think it was the play where he hit Brady in his head with his forearm. Big Jay Alford getting the sack.

But fuck that 49er game and like others said if they had won a Super Bowl in 00-03 then we would've stuck with Jim Fassel and Kerry Collins. It's weird to know that after 2003 Collins played another 5-6 years in the league. So it was highly likely that the Giants would've hung onto these guys if they won a Super Bowl. With Coughlin and Eli, we got two!

but I just had to bring up Super Bowl 42 because when I went to the Stadium celebration in February 2008 me and this guy were talking about the 49er game and how terrible it was. When we were chanting one more year, me and this one guy were chanting "two!" "two!"
WTF
