Good news: 14 WRs have consensus Day 1/2 grades!

Big Blue Blogger : 3/31/2014 10:00 am
It doesn't seem to matter which draft site you read. These receivers show up pretty consistently in the top 100 prospects:
Sammy Watkins Clemson
Mike Evans Texas A& M
Marqise Lee Southern California
Odell Beckham Jr. LSU
Brandin Cooks Oregon State
Kelvin Benjamin Florida State
Allen Robinson Penn State
Jordan Matthews Vanderbilt
Davante Adams Fresno State
Paul Richardson Colorado
Martavis Bryant Clemson
Donte Moncrief Ole Miss
Jarvis Landry LSU
Bruce Ellington South Carolina

So the Giants, with a need for outside speed - but more pressing needs elsewhere - should be able to land an excellent prospect as late as the fourth round, right?

Here's the bad news: In a pass-happy league, nobody has enough receiving talent. In fact, at least sixteen teams have significant needs at wide receiver. Worse, more than half are playoff teams that can spare a high pick more readily than the Giants:
St. Louis Rams
Oakland Raiders
Buffalo Bills
New York Giants
Pittsburgh Steelers
New York Jets
Green Bay Packers
Philadelphia Eagles (post-Jackson)
Kansas City Chiefs
San Diego Chargers
Carolina Panthers
New England Patriots
San Francisco 49ers
Denver Broncos
Seattle Seahawks
Indianapolis Colts

So receivers who are good enough to go on Days 1 and 2 in an ordinary draft will still go on Days 1 and 2, despite the exceptional depth at the position. We might also see some marginal third rounders (e.g. Abbredaris, Latimer, Coleman, Herron) sneak into Day 2, creating a run on receivers that leaves only standard Day 3 talent left for the bottom-feeders. In other words, if the Giants want a near-term starter at WR from this draft, they will likely have to pay full price.

I don't watch much college ball, so I'm curious whether those lists ring true for more dedicated draftniks.
Abbredaris reminds me of Steve Smith (not the Carolina one).

He finds a way to get separation and catches the ball.
To me it just means some juicy potential talent drops

in other positions.

The Giants only need one of those guys.

I def. think the giants go WR early (by the 3rd rd), however, i am somewhat optimistic about what we have. Cruz is a stud, and i think a more WCO is going to suit him very well. I think RR has developed in fits and starts, but is going to be a very productive WR... a 1A type guy like Toomer. this assumes he dedicates himself to the game. I am most excited about JJ. I think this new Offense / OC is going to get the most out of him. He seems, to me, to be a Randall Cobb type player - in terms of size, speed, quicks. He is also a tough and tenacious little player. He has a unique skill set, and i have hope that MacAdoo will be more inclined to build the system around players skills the KG.

The hard thing to determine in the draft is what kind of players we will look at. In the past, giants went for that big, strong, tall X. in the new O, i am not sure if that will be the same model.

I like the kid from Ole Miss. I think the 3rd is wishful thinking, but maybe in the 2nd. overall tho i think all that depth at WR in the draft will push good players further down. Everyone needs WRs, but they need everything else, too

There's gonna be...
2ndroundKO : 3/31/2014 10:23 am : link
a run on WRs in the first couple rounds. I suspect we nab one by round 3.
Yeah, I mean...
Curtis in VA : 3/31/2014 10:25 am : link
I guess the Giants can get away with another Rueben Randle, Mario Manningham type of talent. But I think they'd do much better with a 1st round talent who they feel can be the big catch, big play receiver.

Plaxico was that guy and when he was out, the offense suffered. Hakeem was that guy and when he was out (or just decided not to play that day) the offense suffered. Seems like this type of player is a pretty big need.

Who is that guy now?
Ironically, the last time I ran the Fanspeak simulator...
Big Blue Blogger : 3/31/2014 10:28 am : link
...I got Landry in the fourth and Ellington in the fifth. Seems unlikely in real life.

It would be nice if all that receiving talent pushed some good OL/DL fits down a bit. The DE class seems awfully thin to be affected much - especially with the NFL's appetite for pass-rushers. DT and interior OL might see some impact.
OK SO I'M A DINOSAUR

WHAT 'N HELL DO YOU MEAN BY THE "HINDU THEORY"

Oops on the caps

Tie his hair under his helmet? .....MMM that's a Sikh.

Hindu= Sacred Cows?
Hindu= Belly dancers?
Hindu=The sex book?...These guys are sexy????

Apologies to Sneaker O'tool.

with plax and Hakeem. I think our QB and Offense made them better as much as they made the giants better. No one argues that Eli turns slot receivers into big numbers guys, or that he turns journeyman TEs into respectable producers. I think that X position in our old offense, had a lot of production designed for it. We replaced Plax, some would say we upgraded. We will replace nicks. If KG was still OC and we had the old O, i would be sure Evans would be the target at 12. I don't know what the Giants are looking for.

I look at GB and guess, because that is all i can do at this point. They don't have a big stud WR. Nelson is nice. i doubt he would produce at that level anywhere else. (look at jennings) GB has a bunch of good weapons, and a stud at QB.

I agree we need a weapon in the passing game early in the draft. doesn't have to be a WR. (i don't love the idea of ebron)
I'd love to see a draft that looks like this
JOMO25 : 3/31/2014 10:40 am : link
1 DT Donald
2 RT Bitonio
3 Best available WR i.e. Matthews, Lattimer or Landry.
4 TE CJ Fedorowicz
5 DT Caraun Reid
5a WR Jeff Janus
6 S Vinnie Sunseri

Well it helps when your QB can throw 40 TDs and only 8 picks too lol. Eli is never going to be that kind of guy.
George Young's Hindu Theory has been rendered many ways.

Thank you for the explanation

Jomo... I'm a Die in the wool giants fan .....but I don't know everything. When George Young came on Board I was raising five kids and worked a couple of jobs .....including sunday.

So I ask your forgiveness for not being so into the front office. I was still hurting from the years before GY and wasn't into the day by day stuff.

still uses George Young's Hindu theory in his annual draft yearbook. Always makesme think of George Young.
Kind of reminds me of 1996
Deej : 3/31/2014 11:45 am : link
5 WRs in the first round -- Keyshawn, Glenn, Kennison, Harrison, Moulds. 6 sin the second -- Alex Van Dyke, Toomer, Bryan Still, Muhammad, Bobby Engram, Derrick Mayes. TO in the late 3rd, and Joe Horn in the 5th (though he doesnt really count for these purposes).

WRs also went off in bunches in 1994, with much less success. 96, 94 -- I guess it was all the kids who grew up idolizing Jerry Rice, and coaches who wanted the next Jerry Rice. In 94, from 17 to 45 you had 9 WRs go -- Charles Johnson, Johnnie Morton, Thomas Lewis, Derrick Alexander (the guy I wanted in NY), Darnay Scott, Bruce, Kevin Lee, David Palmer (though he was a QB/WR/RB type IIRC), Ryan Yarborough, and Bert Emanuel. 6 more in the 3rd.

my apologies, I didn't mean any harm there
It is a GREAT group
Sy'56 : 3/31/2014 12:04 pm : link
I actually have 21 Day1/2 grades for this group. I've never had more than 15.
Other mega-WR drafts of recent vintage
Deej : 3/31/2014 12:05 pm : link
There have actually been more than I remembered. Drafts with 10 or more WRs in rounds 1-2 are 2001 (10), 2002 (11), 2004 (10, incl. 7 #1s), 2005 (11), 2008 (10, but all in rd. 2).

It's interesting that the trend has really been to let WRs slide a bit more. I wonder why -- I'd guess it has something to do with the changes to over the middle hit rules making cheap slot WRs and move TEs a bigger part of the offense, and vertical passing a small part. I also think the NFL was overvaluing college WRs for a while.

another reason why Evans at 12 would be terrible

Wow. Durability, explosiveness, size, and comes out of his breaks with some snap.

He's my guy after the first. I hope he makes it to our second/third.
Sy
Franz69 : 3/31/2014 1:10 pm : link
since there's so much depth, do you think this would make the Giants less likely to pick Evans if he's available at 12?
all the more reason
nyynyg : 3/31/2014 1:22 pm : link
you do not pull the trigger on Evans at 12. The only guys worth taking is Watkins in Rd 1 before or at our spot.
I wouldn't say that, Franz
Sy'56 : 3/31/2014 1:28 pm : link
I think that approach is more for the fans that create 50 mock drafts every month. Can they overlook a highly graded WR in round 1 because they think the value will be there in round 2? Sure...but I don't its a flawed approach. If there is a player you have graded highly at a position of need, go take him. Don't try an get cute and count on the other 31 teams not picking a guy.
the other thing w the WR depth
JOMO25 : 3/31/2014 1:40 pm : link
is you get a top 2 guy and watch other teams snap up WRs afterwards as guys like Yankey, Bitonio etc. fall to 43
Pretty much
old man : 3/31/2014 1:48 pm : link
what TTH said.
And if they 'go like hotcakes' early like we hope for top 5/6 QBs, all the better, because more of the better OLs especially and other positions/players untouched will still be there at 43. At 43, we will get trade offers for someone who wants their guy, now.
WR
stretch234 : 3/31/2014 2:26 pm : link
I would say Nelson is better than nice. Having 30 TD's, 202 catches and 3330 in his last 44 games is really good.

GB offense with Rodgers has been a 3 WR base offense with 1 back. The Giants do not have a guy on the outside to match the 3rd WR as of yet. They really have 2 slot guys with Jernigan.

Cruz in the slot is an un-coverable player - he is not that on the outside. The Giants need someone on the other side. Whether that is a big WR like Evans, or someone in the second with speed.
I am really hoping we get one of Evans, Beckham, or Adams
Mike in Jersey : 3/31/2014 2:48 pm : link
Of course I would love Watkins as well, but I can't see that happening unfortunately.

I agree with this... good comment.
If Giants don't go WR in 1 or 2

I'd love to see them take a flyer on Martavis Bryant in the 3rd. Height/Speed combo is very attractive. Who knows with this many good WRs available maybe he slips to 4? Or is that a pipe dream?

at or after our pick at 74. I hope it's us, because I'd hate to grab a WR before then...

Until he hurt his knee it was him and Watkins at the top. I think he is a tremendous player. The knee scares the hell out me picking him 12. If they are going WR early, get someone with a clean bill of health
