Veteran CB Zack Bowman has agreed to a one-year deal with the Giants, source said. Visiting with the team today.
My most anticipated signing

in terms of length of wait.
I guess we are close to signing him

I know it's only a one year deal but this plethora of DB's is literally too many bodies. Players are going to be on the bench.
Either the other offers
old man : 3/31/2014 1:16 pm : link
i.a., were less, or, he had several physicals that finally all cleared him.

So we're likely at about 3.5M still available?

At least 1 OL and 1 DT/DE
He also started 7 games for Da Bears when Peanut couldn't go
Anakim : 3/31/2014 1:18 pm : link
3 INTs, one pick-six, 45 solo tackles, 8 PDEF

I wonder if he knows Prince

Obviously this is related to the Bowman signing. I can't see him not making the team. There's going to be really good competition.
This is the most strangely deep Giants secondary I can remember.

Best Giants secondary on paper?

see that the road to the top of the division must pass through the Eagles and their spread offense. Therefore they're building a defense that matches up with a spread offense.
This doesn't necessarily mean we're not drafting a CB
JonC : 3/31/2014 1:24 pm : link
It just means we don't have an urgent need at CB to force a draft pick.

Would you not draft Gilbert if there's a chance you don't want to pay Prince $7-8M per next year, or the year after? Always look beyond the season at hand.
I was starting to get worried.
Tittle 9 20 64 : 3/31/2014 1:24 pm : link
It's been a few days since Reese signed a D-back.
Bowman
LI NHB : 3/31/2014 1:26 pm : link
was also a valuable contributor on Special Teams as a gunner prior to taking on the full-on starting role due to injuries. Between the amount of versatile DB and return men brought in this offseason, it's hard not to see that ST was a major offseason area of focus.

Demps, Holliday, Thurmond all capable returners and now a gunner.

I wouldn't take Gilbert but using your logic I would take Dennard

Very true. The whole secondary with the exception of DRC and Cooper Taylor (who is signed until 2017) are all either signed through 2015 or 2016.
This makes sense with the new 2-2-7 scheme they

I think Fewell's new favorite phrase is "coverage sack"
I dont see the issue with the number of CB's
Blue Blood : 3/31/2014 1:36 pm : link
last year we had Prince, Webster, Ross, Thomas, McBride Holsey and James

This year its Prince, DRC, Thurman, McBride, Bowman, Holsey, and James..

same number of CB's as last season.. so maybe Charles James is on the bubble??

I feel like in a way
moespree : 3/31/2014 1:37 pm : link
Giants might be suggesting here, that they are unsure about how good D-Line is going be in terms of pass rush. I think they could be, if JPP is healthy and Moore progresses. But, in case neither of those things happen, they've loaded up on the secondary. You can stop the pass either way. Giants did it by pass rush in 07 and now perhaps they plan to do it with the secondary in 14.
Could Prince....
jtb nyg : 3/31/2014 1:38 pm : link
be a trade chip? Would be a drastic move, but maybe they don't want to pay two guys that much especially after Webster underperformed.

Honestly, I'd lock up Price for a $5m per deal prior to the season. Our secondary would be square for the rest of Eli's tenure.
are we maybe getting too excited
Giantsfan79 : 3/31/2014 1:38 pm : link
it is quite possible this guy is nothing more then a camp body who might very well get cut before the season starts. Antwaun Molden anyone?
It would be disappointing if Bowman made the team
Bino5 : 3/31/2014 1:38 pm : link
There is no excuse for most of your CB's to be vet free agent signings.
anyone in the top 5 need a CB?

HELLLOOOOOO Jake Matthews!!!!
Don't read too much into it.
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/31/2014 1:43 pm : link
You need DB depth. We've struggled for years with injured CBs.

They let Ross and Thomas go. Have to get some talent into the position.

They have 7 CBs. You need about 5-6. Someone always gets hurt.
Good
illmatic : 3/31/2014 1:43 pm : link
Can never have too many able bodies back there. There will be injuries, unfortunately.
I would still draft Gilbert if he was there
Mason : 3/31/2014 1:44 pm : link
And if McGills is there later rounds. A lot of one year deals. But I think the Giants are going to invest heavily into the lines this draft.

What does Eli's tenure have to do with the Giants secondary?
I think it speaks to improving special teams

with proven players.
zaCK bowman
oipolloi : 3/31/2014 1:47 pm : link
fairly obvious why he was signed
If they want to retain Prince below market value
JonC : 3/31/2014 1:49 pm : link
on a multi-year deal, it would need be done sooner than later.
I think it rules out CB in round 1
UConn4523 : 3/31/2014 1:49 pm : link
without question. 2 and on is possible, but I have a hard time imagining that Gilbert/Dennard are rated above Lewan/Evans/Donald/Martin

a trade wouldn't be that far-fetched.
If we an expendable and tradeable player....it would be Prince. I just don't see how all these CB's get on the field.

I..think you may be overestimating the abilities of the CBs under Prince and DRC.

Prince isn't expendable in the slightest. Who else would be qualified to start? Zack Bowman is a career backup. McBride and Hosley are smaller, probably best suited for slot duty.
Ten Tom
Andy in Boston : 3/31/2014 2:04 pm : link
I'm saying if Giants are going to make a trade......you could argue Prince would be one of the few that are expendable or other teams could have interest in. He's a solid corner.....and if you traded him, you would likely draft another corner, which would still give the giants 5 quality CB's. So for instance if you trade him, and let's say you draft Justin Gilbert, he likely starts with DRC.
You then have Thurmond, Hosley, McBride and Bowman as backups.
Don't sleep on

AcidTest : 3/31/2014 2:15 pm : link
imagine trading Prince. Bowman must be hear for his ST abilities, and as a backup. Still seems like overkill to me after Thurmond and DRC.

Prince, DRC, Thurmond, McBride, and Hosley. Now Bowman. Are we going to carry 6 CBs? And what about S? We've got Rolle, Hill, Taylor, Demps, and Brown. That's 10 DBs. Not happening. Of course, we won't have that problem if someone is unfortunately injured, but adding Bowman seems like a lot.
Don't they usually carry 6 CBs?
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/31/2014 2:17 pm : link
.
they typically keep 6 cbs
bc4life : 3/31/2014 2:18 pm : link
Prince, Ridgers-Cromartie, Thurmond (*suspension risk), McBride, Bowman, Hosely (*injury risk) and a bunch of other guys.

Outside of Prince, RC, and McBride - the others are not locks to make and stay on the team due to concerns be they injuries, off-the-field, issues, or performance. So, I don't see the rush to trade someone - because the shelves are not necessarily overstocked.
CB
stretch234 : 3/31/2014 2:32 pm : link
Since the Eli era started, the Giants have very rarely even remained healthy with CB's. Rolle has had to play slot almost every year here, and Holsey, while talented has not been healthy.

You really need to have 6 CB's that can play. I would rather have a lot of competition in camp and know what guys can do vs going into the season and hoping the top guys do not get hurt.

Plus, it really is difficult to find CB who can play. They have that
I like it...
Damon : 3/31/2014 2:33 pm : link
Look at the games we lost year? As bad as the O-Line was... Special Teams might have been worse. Instead of JAGs for depth, viable assets on Special Teams will make sure that we don't lose 3 games due to kick/punt return TDs.

I still think Charles Brown gets signed to be the swing tackle.
