NFT: 2014-Mets Minor league stuff

DanMetroMan : 4/2/2014 10:20 am
I've never really been a huge IGT poster when it comes to the Mets/Giants but this season especially I'm really focused on the minors and guys like Wheeler so I'll try to keep a running thread on the stuff going on in the minors every day

-Mets hopeful Mazzoni won't miss much time pending MRI results
-Rubin had a nice feature on Nimmo, apparently his hand issue was more extensive than the Mets initially noticed (no shock with this franchise lol)

- AA rotation (in order)-
Gorski
Lara
Pill
Robles
Peavey
Bowman

-Thursday's starters- Montero, Gorski, Ynoa and Gsellman

AAA rotation (not in order)
Noah Syndergaard
Jacob deGrom
Daisuke Matsuzaka
Rafael Montero
Logan Verrett

-Chasen Bradford named closer of AA Mets

Your suggestion effectively replaces Duda with Campbell. If your understanding of WAR makes you think that this is somehow a good idea, then you need to go back and check your figures.
Campbell
pjcas18 : 7/5/2014 12:02 am : link
doesn't have enough of a sample for WAR to be meaningful.

Also, Duda can't play 3b, my suggestion was maybe moving Wright to 1B would save him some injuries.

And the mets might have a 3b on the roster in Campbell or Flores that could fill in.

So, forget Campbell, Flores could be the guy.

It was more asking even than suggesting since I'm not familiar with Campbell.

Point about Duda was though, he's absolutely replaceable and a priority. SS might be bigger, but not by a ton.

If he continues to pitch well, maybe he'll start next season at AAA.
Goes to show you how little....

concern the major sites have about Thor's struggles. Also great to see Nimmo making a major jump. Wasnt he not even in either of their top 100? I only seem to remember him being in Law's top 100.
Nimmo
DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 11:27 am : link
was in the 100-110 range in BA's pre-season list, Parks specifically didn't like him before the year for BP so that's a significant jump.

cleveland paper suggested Colon for Naquin and Paulino. I'm not a big fan of either prospect but if that's the best they can get I'd probably do it. Naquin looks like a 4th OF to me despite being a high pick.
def not helping that Colon...
Italianju : 7/7/2014 11:29 am : link
has struggled two starts in a row. I doubt a teams opinion on him is going to change too much with two bad starts (or two good starts) but would be nice if he was on a hot streak.
Colon
DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 11:33 am : link
likely isn't bringing back as much as people think. McCarthy and Colon are similar caliber pitchers and the D-Backs had to throw in money just to get Nuno. Maybe the Mets get a little more because Colon is a bit more proven but he has to pitch better.
we finally have a viable prospect

Puello is a dud.
Colon bringing anything significant back would be a bonus
Eric on Li : 7/7/2014 12:38 pm : link
Kind of like the Buck/Byrd trade. It's insane that Sandy was able to get 2 really good pieces in that deal. Only important thing with that deal is saving the 11M for next year, because that clearly needs to be re-invested into improving the offense.

Now Murphy on the other hand, he'd better be bringing back something nice.

DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 12:40 pm : link
Darwin Ramos could top out at 80 MPH for all I know but last year at 17, 42 innings 37 hits 5 walks 40 k's. solid size at 6'2 195, only 18

I'm ok with Murphy staying.. Unless Herrera is ready for prime time, I don't know if the Mets have anyone else viable as a 2B starter. Will Flores be a SS or 2B or even a Met at all?

issue with Murphy is... either you are willing to pay Daniel Murphy roughly 40 million on a 4 year deal or you have to trade him. Letting him "Reyes" would be an unconscionable decision. 100% must extend or trade him.

How big of a return are we talking about for Murphy?

Throwing him a QO and taking an extra 1st isn't a "nothing" return, and if we think we're going to be competitive next year, we might need to hold on to one of our best players. I guess I'd only want to trade Murphy for a legit MLB OF or SS with the plan of putting Flores at 2B to replace Murphy.

I agree with that Dan - the thing is they do still have time to make that decision. They could conceivably wait until next year's deadline and then possibly have the luxury of making that decision with Herrera being ready to step in. Or they could make that decision in the offseason after knowing whether or not Flores can hack it every day in the ML's.

If they are forgoing those 2 opportunities and dealing him now, it better be for a player who you would never expect to get for him otherwise.

DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 12:55 pm : link
I don't see any way the Mets would feel comfortable tying up 15+ million for 1 year in Daniel Murphy #2 At some point you can't keep kicking the can down the field. They offer Murphy the QO, he signs with the Royals following the 2015 season, mid-season 2016 they have that pick... so 4-5 years now now maybe that guy helps the Mets? When Wright is 36-37 years old? That would be quite dumb. You either resign Murphy or you get someone that can help in the next 1-2 years for him
Eric
DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 1:03 pm : link
I'm not saying the Murphy decision has to come now. I'm just saying 2015 trade deadline has to end with Murphy playing somewhere else or signed to an extension.

Totally agree. Out of curiosity, what type of prospect (or package) within the realm of possibility would you need to move him this year? This is also under the assumption that extension talks are ongoing and there's at least a solid chance he's willing to resign for a reasonable contract.
Martino
DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 1:19 pm : link
implied Murphy's value around the league is less than it is to the Mets. No idea what that means on the trade front but I would want something a lot closer to Wheeler than Taylor (a lottery ticket that may never even see AA). Not saying you get a Wheeler for Daniel Murphy but Daniel Norris would be the type of guy I'd be insisting on.

Colon and the Indians?
spike : 7/7/2014 2:16 pm : link
"The News-Herald columnists proposes trading 2012 first round pick center fielder Tyler Naquin and 19-year old shortstop/outfield prospect Dorssys Paulino for Colon and $3 million. Another report on FOX Sports Ohio suggested a similar proposition for the Indians.

Colon began his MLB career with the Tribe (1997-2002).

ESPN’s Jim Bowden believes the Yankees, Blue Jays, Angels, Indians, Pirates and Mariners could all have interest in Colon, who he says could fetch a good upper-level prospect. He says there’s a 50% chance the Mets will deal the veteran righthander.

With Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel now off the market, Colon could be an attractive option for a lot of contenders"

If we can get a decent return now for him I would not necessarily be against trading him. However, I will not trade up for the sake of trading him. With Niese and Gee on the DL (although Gee will be back soon) I am not sure if we have 5 starters if we trade Colon. When Gee returns our rotation will be: Wheeler, Gee, Dice-K, DeGrom, ????. Thor needs some work before he is ready to be called up and Montero is not healthy. If Niese is not ready soon after Colon is dealt the options are move Torres or Eveland into the rotation temporarily or outright someone like Teagarden or Carlyle off the 40 man so that you can call up someone like Logan Verrett

sucks (and is now a LF with zero power) and Naquin is a 4th OF (again with limited power). I wouldn't lose my shit over such a package but neither one is likely going to help the Mets much (Naquin has solid odds of being a decent bench player but c'mon)
Seattle
DanMetroMan : 7/7/2014 2:40 pm : link
on paper is the best fit for Colon. Knows the AL West, good park for him, good system with interesting prospects to spare (even if they can't get a top, top name).
Any chance they could get Franklin?
Eric on Li : 7/7/2014 2:48 pm : link
that would completely exceed my expectations for Colon, but maybe they could throw something else in to sweeten the pot for Seattle like one of the young relievers?

Colon is due to get rocked as the season goes on. If the Mets can get out from the $10M owed next year and get a legit prospect in return, I'd take it in a second.

Franklin would be a good add to not only possibly fill the SS vacancy, but maybe even backfill Murphy until Herrera's ready if they do ultimately decide to trade him in the offseason.

So there's that. Good news.

Eric on Li : 7/10/2014 9:18 am : link
obviously everyone won't pan out, but there are so many intriguing players throughout all levels, odds are at least a few will continue all the way to the big leagues with their success.

I know we've all said it, but the few trades Sandy makes as a buyer this offseason are almost entirely going to define his tenure. Put me in the camp hoping for Tulowitzki.

“Plus-plus athlete; physically projectable; fast-twitch; big arm strength; very quick arm; routinely worked 91-96 in the GCL; good feel for filling up the zone; turns over a promising changeup; excellent late action on the pitch; commands it; slurvy breaking ball shows some bat-missing potential; slower slider action; highly competitive on/off the mound”

“Still transitioning from thrower to pitcher; erratic stuff; flashes of brilliance followed by inconsistency; more control than command at present; turns over a quality changeup but can get deliberate in the delivery; breaking ball is inconsistent; more slurve than clear slider; lacks a tight rotation and shows limited depth.”

“When discussing Molina, it was mentioned that if the 18-year-old were available for inclusion in the rule 4 draft, the highly athletic 6-foot-3, 190 lb. righty would be considered a first-round talent.”

Why start Conforto
Metnut : 7/10/2014 10:38 am : link
in Brooklyn? Isn't he like 21 and has 3 years of NCAA experience? I think short season A ball is a downgrade from division I NCAA. I remember reading that while he had a shot to start at AA, high A ball was more likely. I didn't expect Brooklyn.

great point..

I expected him to be in AA as well and move up the system with Nimmo.

Maybe there's a logjam up there with Burgamy and Lawley? I know they are both hitting pretty well, although Burgamy is a bit older. Maybe he should be in AAA.

I could understand a logjam, but I don't see what Conforto could gain from playing in Brooklyn. The guy consisently raked in the Pac-12. What does having him face off against 18-19 year old kids out of HS accomplish?

Go to Appalachian League or Gulf Coast League or comparable levels, which are both below the New York-Penn League. I probably would have sent him to Savannah because it is not like they really have anybody you would be afraid of him blocking while he is there, but that stadium is notoriously difficult on left-handed power hitters and playing in Brooklyn the Mets can have some of their professional coaches on days the Mets are home work with him
some positive Mets notes from Law in his latest chat...
Italianju : 7/11/2014 8:54 am : link
- Plawecki wont be in his midseason top 50 but he would be in his top 100
- Herera should be a starter at 2b "and a good one"
- On D. Smith again he says SAV murders LH power and "he'll be fine"
- Murhpy should return a top 100 guy if the mets traded him as long as the team thought he can play an average 2B

and on Degrom:

Quote:
Danny (Brooklyn, NY)

Most didn't view Jacob deGrom as a high-upside starter, but it seems like he may have done what Matt Harvey did (NOT comparing him to Harvey) in that he saved his best for when he reached the majors. He's been 95-96 with the fastball consistently.
Klaw (4:06 PM)

Fairly late/recent convert to the mound too, so I wouldn't be shocked if this was the real him - a new gear that no one saw coming. Always liked him but can't say I thought he'd be close to this.

Law really seems to like our prospects these days. Im assuming if he did a top 100 we would have at least Thor, Nimmo, Plawecki, and Smith with Conforto and Herera having good shots.
