Reconnaissance on DRC, Ayers, Holliday, Walton

Orange Habit : 4/2/2014 12:32 pm
Hey there Giants fans, I thought you might be interested in a Broncos fan's take on all of their free agents that the Giants signed. Pretty fascinating that the Giants have signed four of them, but I'm not complaining, as I tend to like to see former players go to the NFC, and I think it speaks well that a team as well-run as the Giants are taking in players the Broncos largely didn't have room for anymore. It also helps the Broncos break their league-longest drought on getting compensatory draft picks. Anyway, on to the players themselves:

--DRC: The big question, as you probably know from his time with the Eagles, is whether he's a contract player. We won't know for sure, of course, and those retirement quotes before the Super Bowl were odd, to say the least. But if he plays at or near the level he did in Denver, you should be getting a very good cover corner. It was difficult to say whether or not he was better than Chris Harris, but it could be fairly said that they were 1A and 1B on Denver's CB rankings. I would have rather seen the Broncos re-sign him than go after Talib due to all the character flags, but it is what it is. Given where the Giants previously stood at CB, I see this as an improvement, no doubt. How much of an improvement could factor on how the money will affect him.
--Ayers: Excellent against the run, mediocre against the pass. He was slated to start when the Broncos cut Elvis Dumervil, but was passed up by Shaun Phillips because he could rush the passer better. With the emergence of Derek Wolfe and Malik Jackson as run-stuffers, there just wasn't any place for Ayers anymore. With the Giants, he should be at least a solid rotational guy and I could see him complementing JPP very well.
--Holliday: Absolutely maddening, both in the exciting and horrifying manners. You guys saw him at his best when the Broncos played the Giants last season--he's a threat to run it back every time he get a hold of the ball. However, because he's so tiny by NFL standards, he's very liable to fumble it. Using Trindon will always be a big gamble, with high risk and high reward. He'll get your adrenaline flowing, no doubt.
--Walton: Injuries have just derailed what was otherwise a solid career thus far. He stepped in from Day 1 his rookie season to take over the center position and did a very good job. Unfortunately, the broken ankle he suffered in 2012 was just gruesome, and it took him much longer than anticipated to recover. In the meantime, Peyton Manning developed an excellent rapport with Manny Ramirez at center, and even if Walton was healthy, there was no longer room for him. The worry is that Chris Kuper suffered a similar injury, and it forced him to retire. I hope that's not the case for Walton, but it's a possibility. I'll be rooting for him to do well.

I may check in with this board for a while in case anyone wants to ask me any questions on my opinion on watching these four players. Best of luck next season--I would love to see a Manning Super Bowl before it's too late!

You pretty much painted an absolute worst case scenario there. I seriously doubt that will happen. On the whole, I think these are good signings by the Giants. No player is perfect, though, and any analysis should take a look at both the strengths and possible weaknesses.

Personally, I like your take on the signings. All signings come with question marks.

I don't think Walton will be an issue as I'm sure the medical staff cleared him. He is a veteran who is likely hungry for bigger money should he hold up and play well for us.

Ayers was a need signing at DE. He can stop the run and provide us with the much needed depth.

DRC is a need. We have a superb secondary if he plays up to his capabilities. I actually see our secondary shutting down most teams.

Holliday is a pure special teamer with moves that will electrify the MetLife Stadium. Lets hope he can be coached through on fumbles.
Thanks for the insight

I really hope that's the case. I thought the contract he was signed for was very reasonable, and it won't be tough to get out of if Walton just can't make it. But if he's 100% he should be a real improvement on the O-line.

I reserve the flamethrower for discussion about the Raiders. :) Thankfully, that team's been such a dumpster fire on its own that it's been unnecessary to use.

Pay no attention to the guys with "negative" comments: they were not really negative or directed at you. They were inside jokes that it would take way too long to explain, if they can even be explained.

Also, just wondering whether Walton is a better pass or run blocker. Giants OL was horrendous up the middle on both but particularly pass blocking.

Honestly, I don't remember much of him from either game, and in the 2nd one, the Broncos put in 2nd stringers in the 2nd half after Peyton broke another record, so that would skew things there. He was well-regarded despite playing on a Raiders team that was so devoid of talent everywhere, so maybe a change of scenery will do even better for him.

I'm also a big Peyton Hillis fan if he has his head screwed on straight. He never got a fair shake in Denver.

Yeah, I figured it out pretty quickly, it's always tough to tell who means what when you are brand new to an online community. I know all about how inside jokes work.

From what I can recall, I felt that Walton performed equal in the run and the pass, but it's been almost two years since he's played so I'd have to look at old tape to get a better answer. He's a tough guy, though, and I'd imagine he'd fit in well with a Tom Coughlin team.
Very thoughtful of you to do this.

Interesting point. I hope that's not the case, even if that wouldn't make the Broncos look good. Montgomery started off his career with John Fox in Carolina, so there is that. They actually cut Walton during the end of the season when injuries forced them to stock up on other positions. Doing so also cost the Broncos a chance at another 6th round compensatory pick given what Walton signed for with the Giants.
thanks for the insight
Les in TO : 4/2/2014 4:46 pm : link
i'm predicting 2 of the 4 former Broncos players will be successful on the Gmen: DRC and Ayers. I think Ayers is going to get some decent sack totals if our secondary lives up to its billing and I don't think DRC is going to be able to coast under Coughlin and will be inspired to play with this secondary, especially rolle.

I can see Holliday infuriating Coughlin and possibly getting benched and I have a feeling Walton will be an early IR candidate.
Do you see a trend in the FA pickups?

Speedy-I don't care how many games he watched, I can diagnose a player better in one game (it was more like 6) than most fans can in an entire season. I'm watching from a perspective I'm assuming he doesn't have and I'm sure you don't. It's a tough pill to swallow, but admitting I am far more adept at diagnosing what I'm seeing is something you need to accept.

Klaatu-fuck you, seriously. I can't be critical of a signing without you assuming I'm off my rocker? Who died and made you the king of football? Fucking dick, fuck you.

LOL - that's rich, coming from a guy who started a post proclaiming a bad 2014 season for the Giants. On March 12th.

Let's make it interesting then, predict our record if you're so savvy. This team is not going to improve, period, it's too talent deficient in too many spots and yes I know it's early but it doesn't take an entire offseason to see how bad this team is. Internet nobody? That's coming from you, another internet nobody which is criticism of this Bronco fan who is...another internet nobody. I'm confident in my ability to watch and understand what I'm seeing. I did it weekly for this website and and I'd ask that you take a poll, see who thinks I know nothing about football. That list will be you, Klaatu and the idiot kmed.

Klaatu- I don't care if you're joking, I don't know you, we aren't friends, we don't pal around so you making jokes at my expense isn't funny to me its simply insulting.
