The OL; what to do with Beatty and Pugh if Lewan is drafted?

yatqb : 4/4/2014 12:26 pm
I'm wondering whether the Giants, especially after signing two OGs in the offseason, would be willing to reshuffle the entire OL were we to bring Lewan in to play OT.

It seems to me that:

1) Lewan could either play LT, with Beatty sliding to RT and Pugh moving to LG; or

2) Lewan takes over RT with Pugh moving to LG; or

3) Sitting Beatty, and letting Lewan and Pugh man the OT spots. I think this option is absolutely a non-starter for them.

But does it seem to you like the Giants would be willing to move Pugh inside when he's proven to be a highly competent OT who will likely only get better as he gains more experience and weight?

What say you? And I'm not asking for your opinion about what they SHOULD do as much as your opinion about what the Giants are likely to do.

Beatty will have to
Vegas Steve : 4/4/2014 12:30 pm : link
either beatout Lewan (not likely) or learn to play guard (not likely either)

Pugh is our RT nuff said per TC
Beatty goes to the bench.

Lots of talk about Beatty starting the season on IR, and even if he wasn't, last years performance is worthy of giving someone else a shot. Really, drafting Lewan or another top tackle would go a long way toward restoring the offense. Would give the OL quality Depth that has been lacking for years.
Pugh is set for years at RT
JohnB : 4/4/2014 12:33 pm : link
yet people want to shuffle him around like his journeyman on his 4th team. He has shown that he has the ability to be, someday, a top flight RT. Leave him alone.

Ideally if you are selecting Lewan with a pick that high, it's to play the left side.

Kick Beatty inside.

on IR which means he won't be available until week 9 at the soonest?

He broke his leg in December, he didn't lose it.

IS PRETTY MUCH OUT,GIVEN WB IS A $6M MAN, SO I'D SAY 1(THOUGH I DONT LIKE MOVING JP AT ALL).
AS MUCH AS I'D LOVE TL AS A GIANT, GIVEN THAT WB CONTRACT, ZM MIGHT BE THE MAN @12.
I wouldn't mind Lewan
Motley Blue : 4/4/2014 12:36 pm : link
and I also wouldn't mind his teammate Schofield from the later rounds. I'd put them right next to each other LT & LG. Build a big ass wall of mean.

GOTTA MAKE THAT PAIRING IN Y2.

Haven't heard that.
I don't think Pugh at RT is a given.
bceagle05 : 4/4/2014 12:41 pm : link
He's played more LT in recent years than RT, and Coughlin has said he could handle the switch if he adds just a bit more weight. He might be the long-term solution there, assuming a 'blue goose' doesn't fall in or lap this year (or we don't move up to get one).

I don't know what to make of Beatty. His former OC already called him soft, and he's been inconsistent and injury prone. I doubt he suddenly blossoms into much more than he already is. I'm not wishing injury on the guy, but if he starts out on PUP I'm kinda hoping he gets Wally Pipped.
Depends
jeff57 : 4/4/2014 12:42 pm : link
If Beatty is healthy, he'll probably start at LT, with Lewan at RT and Pugh moving to LG. Which is one of the reasons they shouldn't draft Lewan. Martin fits in better.
won't take Lewan
Csonka : 4/4/2014 12:44 pm : link
if we go OT it will be Martin for the flexability.

Beatty is not a guard..Can we accept this?
drkenneth : 4/4/2014 12:46 pm : link
I agree with bceagle. I wouldn't count out Pugh as our LT.

Lewan would be a stud at RT.

Motley Blue : 4/4/2014 12:46 pm : link
agreed.

That would be goal.

How often do rookies start at LT and have success ??
BigBluDawg : 4/4/2014 12:55 pm : link
I know none of the first round tackles drafted last year outside of Pugh had good seasons. Both Tyron Smith and Nate Solder played RT their rookie seasons. I would be reluctant to trust a rookie to protect your franchise quarterbacks blindside.

Plus this is the same team that trotted out a horrible Diehl for 3 seasons. I highly doubt they give up on Beatty after one bad year. Especially with the salary he is receiving .
Beatty is not a good
Geeman : 4/4/2014 1:03 pm : link
Tackle either.
I still find it hard to believe that the Giants are done with Beatty
Mason : 4/4/2014 1:21 pm : link
Getting the feeling they will go with Brandon Thomas in the 2nd because he is more their type. Able to play guard and even tackle in a pinch. Regardless of Snee, getting a quality LG makes sense if your new FA best position is RG. Getting a versatile OL makes sense.

And it is looking like they will take a center in this draft. Though I wonder how they view Mosley, Pugh and even Herman. I think Pugh is wasted at center.

I wonder if a playmaker is too much for them to pass up. And I include Donald in what they view as a playmaker.

Beatty at LT; Lewan at RT; Pugh at RG

If Beatty struggles or is still injured:

Lewan to LT; Pugh to RT; Snee to RG

I doubt he'd be IRed as he'll start camp on the PUP list no doubt ... then decision time would come as late as the final 53 cut ... like 5 months from now ... very far in the future to guess his condition then ...

Sorry. Not IR
x meadowlander : 4/4/2014 1:45 pm : link
My bad. But there is a lot of concern that he won't start the season because he isn't yet fully recovered.

That better?
Rather take Martin if we go OL
Phil in LA : 4/4/2014 1:47 pm : link
But I don't think Lewan is a Left Tackle, to begin, in the pros, and I don't know if he can play guard. So he's either have to beat out Pugh at RT, thereby moving Pugh to G or C for the time being. That's a lot of moving guys around. Tht's why I'd rather take the more versatile Zach Martin.

I haven't checked measurable, but physically he may be better off at LT or LG.

Schwartz is Snee's successor at RG this year or next.

Riding the pine. I know Coughlin loves him (being family and all), but he hasn't earned the right to start anymore. He's not the player he once was

How about Beatty healthy, comes back and looks like he did in 11 & 12 beating Lewan out. Lewan can't plat RT because Pugh is better. Then what happens - Lewan on the bench.

Says who? Any links, articles, sources to such a claim?
Everything I have read is that Beatty is on track
pjcas18 : 4/4/2014 2:56 pm : link
to be ready for or during training camp - that the Giants start a week before most other teams.

I'd believe maybe he starts camp on PUP, but even that I think is worst case.
So many Michigan fan boys, so little time
HomerJones45 : 4/4/2014 4:11 pm : link
we aren't wasting a draft pick on another OT when we have needs on the interior of the line, te and wideout.

There are two assumptions being made here: One, that Beatty won't be ready for the season. I don't know who is supposedly discussing it, but he's going to be ready for camp. Second, that it is automatic that the Great Wolverine is going to step in and beat out an experienced NFL tackle. Not happening, no matter how much of this year's whipping boy Beatty might be.
There are a lot of unsubstantiated rumors around Beatty's status.
81_Great_Dane : 4/4/2014 4:41 pm : link
He had a broken tibia, then surgery on it. But he didn't have ligament damage. So the bone has to heal, and he has to recover from the surgery itself. The reports at the time said that barring setbacks, he should be ready for the start of the season. That was reported several places.

I think the phrase "start of the season" has led a lot of people to believe he won't be ready for the start of training camp. Then those people leaped to the conclusion he'll be on PUP or IR, and posted about that. And then other people posted about their posts, because now they have heard other people say stuff, and it becomes a self-perpetuating rumor mill.

But I don't think the Giants have said whether they expect Beatty to be ready to take the field in training camp. I don't think they've even said whether he'll be at OTAs, have they? I know the Giants are really close-mouthed about some injuries, but I want to hear from the organization before I draw any conclusions.
Why would anyone assume Pugh would play LG?
Matt M. : 4/4/2014 5:00 pm : link
He didn't play OG at Syracuse, as far as I know. He is an OT and by the end of the season was a pretty good RT. He looks like a very good pick and should be the RT for years. If they draft Lewan, it would be up to Beatty to beat him out.

He didn't, but he played Guard in the Senior Bowl and did well. That and the obsession over his arm length leads people to say he's a better fit at Guard.
OC, I just don't see the Giants giving up on Beatty one year
yatqb : 4/4/2014 5:25 pm : link
after they signed him to a very big contract. So, imo, if we were to take Lewan, Pugh would have to move inside because Lewan can't play OG. It's a waste of Pugh's talent, imo, but if he became a Pro Bowl OG it wouldn't be the most awful thing.

Questions about Lewan not being a sure thing at LT and Beatty potentially bouncing back makes me want to trade back for Martin. But Lewan's talent is too much to ignore.

The math: If Evans, Lewan, and Donald are all gone see if we can trade down with Baltimore or Pitt and then take Martin.

right where he is aT RT. The guy has the makings of being all pro at that spot. Why would we move him? Lewan, taken at #12 has to get a shot at LT, with Beatty as the odd man out for now. We are not sure how quick Beatty will come back anyway.
what Optimus quoted from rick in Dallas's original
BlueLou : 4/5/2014 2:41 pm : link
response. You get a shot to grab Lewan at 12 you take him and figure that sooner or later this guy is your blue goose, as JR would say. Beatty takes a pay cut and moves inside... Or whatever...

Lewan.
Maybe not Phil, the first segments I saw of him
BlueLou : 4/5/2014 3:22 pm : link
Would back up your point about him being an ORT in the pros, but today I watched his game vs Mich State and part of the game vs ND, and more and more I like his potential to be a blue goose. Guy's got great feet for a man his size, and a smooth, effortless kick step. Keeps a very good base under his torso too. Yeah he needs work, but he could be great IMO.

GOT TO look at more games...
