Davante Adams has become my favorite WR in this draft

chopperhatch : 4/5/2014 9:32 pm
Aside obviously from Watkins. But despite my wanting to take Evans if he was there, the last two days I have been going over a bunch of the WRs to go in the first two rou ds of this draft and players we have been talking about our team drafting. Adams has all the tools but the jump out at you measurables. He reminds me a ton of Nicks at his best. Very good at high pointing the ball, catches the ball with his hands. His greatest strength aside from his body control and awareness is his open field ability. He appears to always look to get upfield and score. Meaning he does not catch the ball, take what he can get and go down (Marvin Harrison, Randy Moss). This attribute will be huge because it wont take the stay pass/bubble screen/quick hitch out of the playbook that Eli likes running so much. He is the only wr who during his high lights I said "wow" on multiple occasions.

While I like aspects of the games of Bryant, Landry, and Moncrief, I really hope Adams is our guy in the 2nd. Only Watkins and Cooks looked as impressive to me.

Ideally, trade down with MIA/AZ for an extra 2nd, take Sua'Filo in the first, Tuitt and Adams in the 2nd and Niklas in the 3rd. I actually could forgo Tuitt to assure ourselves of getting Niklas, but this would be a dream scenario for me in this draft. Use round 4-5 for OL and a DT.
such an impressive wr draft

i was watching some tape on Saunders from Oklahoma today...reminded me a little of Ike Hilliard. very gifted at dipping his shoulder to draw defenders in pursuit and then pulling away.
One of my faves, too
Phil in LA : 4/5/2014 10:01 pm : link
but this draft is as loaded with WR's as any I've ever seen and it'll be interesting to see who the eventual great ones will be.
Phil,
dune69 : 4/5/2014 10:11 pm : link
the "forgotten" wide receiver who doesn't get much press seems to be Marqise Lee of USC. His tape is phenomenal. I know he is slight of build and has some injury issues but nobody seems to be talking about him. Will he be a good pro or is he just too light?
He might get injured a lot
Phil in LA : 4/5/2014 10:16 pm : link
but his WR instincts are insane. And sometimes those slight guys don't get hurt much at all. His field speed is much better than his timed speed.
He looks like a
dune69 : 4/5/2014 10:18 pm : link
game breaker. But so many of these guys do look tremendous. Talent galore at the wide receiver position.
I dont think he has Nicks ability to get deep
chris r : 4/5/2014 10:28 pm : link
Or his freaky hands but otherwise they're similar. I think hes more like Cotchery.
Lee reminds me of

Isaac Bruce. I'm just biased for some reason against small WRs that early in the draft.
Adams looks good to me
Rjanyg : 4/5/2014 11:03 pm : link
Nice hands, runs solid routes. Looks very physical. Is round 2 about right?
yea round 2.
chopperhatch : 4/5/2014 11:08 pm : link
Should get to us. Trading back to select Martin or Sua'Filo and grabbing Adams AND niklas would be huge.

If Lee gets hurt a lot, why would we want him in the first again? Take a look at Adams highlights... he has nothing but instincts

was saying earlier on another thread that Cody Latimer might now be a second round pick. I found some articles saying the same thing. But it really isn't necessary to force a WR pick in this draft. Not with so many who are so talented. A good one will still be available in round three.
I see Adams as a tick below Watkins
PA Giant Fan : 4/5/2014 11:27 pm : link
Latimer looks nice too. Adams seems very tough to deal with and almost oncoverable....kind of like Cruz the way he attacks the ball.
Yea he just knows how to get open
chopperhatch : 4/5/2014 11:32 pm : link
And get the ball. I want that.

Phil, but Adams is a much better player than the 2nd tier guys imho. I would put off OL until 3 rather than miss a chance to get Eli with this guy.

Donald or Lewan or trade down and take martin or Sua'Filo in 1, Adams and Niklas in 2nd, more OL in 3rd

Do you see him as more than a obsession receiver? In the clips I've sewn he gets caught from behind a lot.
possession
chris r : 4/5/2014 11:37 pm : link
Obviously.
the way adams snatches the ball out of the air at times
Neverend : 4/6/2014 12:36 am : link
is really impressive. He's well capable of the ridiculous grabs. I loved him at first, I still do. I was watching some of his game tape on draftbreakdown and I did notice some concentration drops and 'meh' route running, but nothing alarming. he's definitely going to making plays on sundays.
Knocks on Adams
Emlen'sGremlins : 4/6/2014 1:22 am : link
1) Played Against Poor Competition
2) Played With A Top QB
3) His Numbers Were A Product Of Their Spread Offense System
4) He Lacks Top End Speed
yup...alot like Nicks
BloodlustRevenge : 4/6/2014 1:27 am : link
Strong hands...makes tough catches with the defender all over him.....plays bigger than his size. He's also great runner after the catch. He definitely reminds me of Nicks.

I really him and Matthews in the 2nd round. But I'd be fine with Donte Moncrief, Cody Latimer, Cody Hoffman, Devin Street, Kevin Norwood, or TJ Jones in the middle rounds. It's a deep draft for receivers and we're gonna end up with at least one of these receivers
I would type cast
chopperhatch : 4/6/2014 1:30 am : link
Him as a possession guy Chris. He can go up and get it, he knows how to gain seperation prior to the pass and he is good after the catch. When I think of possession guys, I think of guys like Jason Avant, Toomer at the end of his career, Kevin Walter... basically another name for 3rd tier (solid wrs). Greatest name among possession guys: Rocky Proehl.

Adams can get deep like Nicks did.
Emlens
chopperhatch : 4/6/2014 1:32 am : link
Yea those dont stand out to me. Watch his highlight tapes. He out plays EVERYBODY for the ball. And a lot of the throws by Carr, he bailed tje qb out of.

Shit... meant WOULDNT type cast him as that.
I'd like us to get a strong

receiver with some yacability.
A draft
bob in tx : 4/6/2014 7:00 am : link
of (1) Su'a- Filo after a trade down (2) Tuitt & Adams (3) Nicklas would be outstanding.
Everyone keeps saying...
2ndroundKO : 4/6/2014 10:41 am : link
he'll be there for us in the 2nd round but I'm not too sure about that. It's a deep class and teams are gonna grade certain players higher (or lower) than what these pre-draft experts are predicting now.

Adams strikes me as a guy who may have a higher grade than what some may expect. The only knock on him is top end speed but he is plenty fast to me, deceptively even. His hands and catch radius are ridiculous and he's got the size and strength you want in a #1 receiver. If he does fall to us in the second, I'd be elated if we grabbed him.

We have tried to solidify the line in the off-season and reinforcements will be chosen in this draft but I believe that, barring a miracle dropping to us at 12, the Giants will draft either Aaron Donald or Anthony Barr in the first and come back with an offensive playmaker in the second. There will be too many solid prospects at those positions for the Giants to pass up and Davante Adams is a pretty darn good one at a position of need.
Yeah, I love Adams
Andy in Halifax : 4/6/2014 11:42 am : link
Best pure receiving (I mean actually catching the ball) skills of any WR I've watched. He makes catches look easy and adjusts to balls really well. I'd be really excited if we draft him.

Also like Lee a lot, I think he might be special once he's healthy and has a QB that can get him the ball.
Trading down and acquiring an extra 2
AcesUp : 4/6/2014 12:27 pm : link
Is very much a pipe dream in this draft. Unless a qb falls to 12, I doubt it happens. Teams aren't stupid, they're aware of the depth in this draft. If I'm Reese, I actually pander to human psychology and "settle" for less value than the trade chart dictates. Let teams think they got a deal. The chart says a trade down to 20-21 is fair value for an extra 2, I wouldn't be afraid to trade down to the 25-26 range to get one in this draft.

I don't see him running by guys like Nicks sometimes did in the game cutups I've seen. Plus Nicks averaged 18 YPC his last year at NC, Adams 13 YPC. Nicks, despite his average timed speed, was pretty fast in pads and was rarely caught from behind.

I think Cotchery is probably to low end of a comparison. Crabtree is probably a better comparison. A very good possession/YAC guy, but not someone who defenses tilt towards because they're scared he's going to take the top off the defense.
If you trade down below the Dolphins you're gonna lose out on the top
yatqb : 4/6/2014 12:39 pm : link
OTs and Donald. I'm not crazy about that, but Su'a-Filo would make a nice consolation prize.

This draft is pretty deep at o-line as well. Given all our FA signings (that included a starting G and C, along with several backups), I think we'll wait till the middle rounds before we pick up another o-lineman. This offense is in desperate need of a gamechanger.
which is not to say I don't think Adams will be a good player
chris r : 4/6/2014 12:51 pm : link
but I think we need someone who can stretch the field vertically.
KO, you may be right, but there are so many WRs too,
yatqb : 4/6/2014 1:10 pm : link
and my view is that a lot of them are true X receivers that will make it in the league, that we could go OL early and still land a nice WR later.

My thinking is that a guy like Martin, who can play both OG and OT, can almost be thought of as giving us an extra draft pick, since we won't have to draft both an OT and OG in the draft. By himself he'd solve two of our problems (IF he can play OG as well as Mayock claims).

Seems to me that if we don't like Evans (and I don't at 12) and are scared of Lee's slight frame and poor time at the Combine, the only other guy who's a candidate for a #1 pick (and that after a trade down) would be Cooks. Given his height, is that someone the Giants are likely to go after when we already have Cruz and JJ around? It would surprise me.

As for chopper's OP, I like Adams a lot. Great hands, able to get open -- even deep -- despite lack of top speed, and just a really solid football player. I wouldn't object to him in the 2nd.
Another guy I really like at WR is Paul Richardson.
yatqb : 4/6/2014 1:19 pm : link
Very fast, very shifty, great hands, high-points the ball, seems to run his routes very precisely.

Lee is super special and would be viewed as Watkins is this year if he came out a year earlier. He is THAT good.

I don't like the way Lee carries the ball. What he does afterward is ridiculous but his body catching scares me a bit.
