Fair to question the dude's vision but once he gets through a hole like that, there aren't many defensive players in this league who are getting a hold of him.
Really hoping his neck checks out because he could really add a nice dimension to this offense. I certainly haven't given up on him yet even though I know a lot of people here have already declared him a bust.
look out! I think he'll be pumped to contribute given our signing of Jennings and an improved oline (assumption). He could be a real weapon in McAdoo's offense, if it's similar to what they do in Green Bay.
would have taken Cordy Glenn, but Wilson is here, and he certainly had runs like that during the regular season as well. Still think he can really help us, assuming he can play after his next injury. The fumbling has to stop, and the pass blocking has to start.
He was on the field for one of the first snaps of the season. He fumbled and coughlin benched him as a result. Took it too far. I dont want to hear the playbook bullshit.
dbbb, I will again cite his position coach Jerrold Ingram
who said that Wilson was poor in pass pro because he didn't know where he was supposed to be, not because he couldn't physically block. And this was in mid-season 2012. But why believe the facts when there is a half baked opinion to circulate. See quote from JI below, article in attached link. Similar comments from Gilbride as well.
"David has to learn you can't be just a runner, that's not what we do, you have to be a complete running back, you have to be knowledgeable, you have to be smart, you can't just accept your mistakes," Giants running backs coach Jerald Ingram told the New York Post.
"It's about winning games, it's not a popularity contest. It's time for you to grow up and be a man now and see what you can do with the whole ball of wax. Until he proves that it's hard to stick him out there and feel comfortable." - JI Giants coach: Time for David Wilson to 'be a man' - ( New Window )
He'll be a part timer until he can protect the QB.
....actually, quite the opposite. I still expect him to contribute and play at a high level especially considering his mentality and work ethic.
BUT...if he can't play this season or if he starts the year on PUP which is very possible, their RB depth is not good. Jennings (a free agent in a new offense) Hillis (a short yardage/goal line runner at this point) and Cox (coming off a very mediocre year). I understand they could/should draft a RB, but how much can they depend on a rookie?
My thing is the Giants had him on the field early in the Dallas opener post SB46. He was in on a handful of their first snaps. He fumbled and then never got back on the field until the season was dwindling.
They were comfortable enough to play him that early in the year. I'm sure the playbook was an issue but in my eyes Coughlin went too far with the fumble and we never saw him again.
It's an absolute shame he got hurt last yr. The Giants would have had every opportunity to throw him out there and see what he can do with a real work load.
It's not really ''counting him out'' but when the GM says
"I don't think we can go into next season saying David will be ready to go" then it's hard to realistically expect much from him.
I will say that it's strange that the Gilbride kept calling inside runs for an undersized speed back, especially considering our suck-ass interior linemen last year. Of course, Beatty and Myers were pretty horrible too.
"skills" don't mean just being able to get to the corner and scoot. in wilson's case, the most glaring skill flaw is that he simply doesn't know how to pass protect. and that's an indispensable requirement for an nfl running back. for his sake, and the teams, i hope he (re)learns quickly.
(please note i didn't even bring up his ball handling). oh wait....i guess i just did.
his signing is already questionable - you don't use a 1 to exclusively be a special teamer.
They didn't sign him to become "exclusively" a STer.
There was a time when Tiki Barber looked like nothing but a 3DRB and PR guy. He also had his share of ball security issues.
It wasn't until his 4th year that he finally broke out and became a 1,000 yard back. Some guys don't light the world on fire right out of the gates. Giant fans should know that about the RB position pretty damn well.
It brightened my morning. What I really like is how he used the width of the field to his advantage once he got in the secondary. He made the safety take a long angle to try to get to the sideline where he had a chance to outrun him, and then of course he did exactly that.
He showed plenty of potential. He runs hard. Bounces off of defenders. Make them miss. Can outrun everybody.
True though, that his vision isn't always there and his blocking needs improvement. His career so far has been disappointing but he's got plenty of time still to get back on track, provided his neck holds up.
I don't know if his last gear is "elite" or how you measure that but I don't recall him getting caught from behind often once he's broken into the open.
Granted, it's a small sample.. but I don't think many dudes are catching him once he's past them.
that we have had an offense that can't exploit a talent like Wilson because he hasn't yet learned to block.
I realize this is unlikely to change, and that we need to be able to block for Eli, but it just seems like he puts so much pressure on the defense that they'd almost have to scheme to cover him if he was used in the passing game more as a receiver instead of as a blocker.
On passing downs have him split out, or have him set up for the screen. Doing so would force defenses to protect against him getting the ball in space, which would do more to protect Eli than having Wilson or any other RB stay in to pass protect. Use his mismatch to force defenses to rush fewer passes. We don't do that.
But I admit that I am no more than an amateur fan. Who am I to criticize the pros?
please. of course they didn't draft him to exclusively be a STer but that is essentially what he has been reduced to because of his inability to secure the ball from the line of scrimmage and his inability (or unwillingness) to block in the pocket.
tiki wasn't a 1 and, you're right, he worked hard at not fumbling. but at least he could block. during wilson's second year in the league, i didn't see any progress on either of two fronts. did you?
yeah, the guy is explosive. impressively so. but he not the player the giants expected him to be and doesn't appear to have either the aptitude or tenacity to get there. i hope i'm wrong.
Tiki could also really catch and was a passing game weapon
He gets a lot of shit, but he has/had undeniable talent. The Cowboys prime concern was Wilson for the opener last year. Not Nicks, not Cruz. Wilson.
Coughlin did a shit job with him as a rookie.

That's a stupid comment. Is it TCs fault that Wilson couldn't master the playbook?
He actually posted himself doing some backflips the other day on Instagram. Allmost every comment was don't get hurt.
Felix Jones isn't in the same universe as Wilson athletically. Terrible comparison.

I happen to think he's going to be great.
