Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut's men's basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed "starving" because he cannot afford food.

Does anyone actually believe this? I've seen the way D1 athletes eat on a daily basis (unlimited dining hall access, training table, catered meals at the athletic center, and food available in player lounges 24/7, stipends, pell grants, etc). I know he made this statement for it's shock value but it hurts their ultimate goal because it's ridiculous and untrue. I've never seen a group of people eat better than D1 athletes.
I have coached 3 kids who play at the division 2 level now, and every one of their meals are paid for. Plus, if they are on the road, they are usually given meals or at least money to go get something to eat.
So something doesnt add up here.
The kids don't have money.

Why do they need to go to the cafe and take food out? Theres plenty of food for them to eat there. If you are on scholarship and get your meals paid for, and yet you are still hungry - either the athlete is doing something wrong or the University opens the cafeteria from 4-6.
For road games we ate well and the night before was usually something solid like a Ruth's Chris or something. Bowl games we ate well and got a better per diem.

I dont know about you, but I enjoyed cafeteria food. Options were unlimited for me.

But it was open only up until training table. The off campus spots also closed at like 10 or so. Unless you are staying up late wanting to eat during late hours I never went to bed hungry. And I was so fucking exhausted from starting my day at 530a, breakfast check, classes, film, weights, practice, film, meetings, school work, and trying to fit in some strange I was usually in bed by 11 or 12.

We had cook to order stuff - everything from steaks to eggs to biscuits and gravy. Plus we'd all hoard the poweraid for our apartments and take food with us.
Uconn has some of the best facilities in the country - I find it hard to believe the kids are starving. A bit dramatic and ridiculous.

Kids don't bring in garbage bags into the dining hall, fill them with food and bring it back to their rooms.

Com'on man. These kids don't have a pot to go in. How many college kids order pizza or go get a sandwich late at night? College kids stay up until 1 or 2 am every night. They get hungry and nothing but pizza delivery is open. These kids don't have the cash to go shopping and stock the shelves.
They have no reason to be hungry. If they are, its because they didn't eat what was available to them.

Mook, I do agree with you, however the same potential exists for a student athlete to be stupid as it does for a regular student.
For example: If a student athlete had a certain amount of "meal swipes" per semester, they could be like many 18-year-old shmohawks that I knew (and was) in college, who go eat a two-item meal where they were allowed to swipe for five, and then do it again later when they're inevitably hungry again, losing out on food.
I ran out one time with like a week to go one semester and needed my folks to send me extra cash. Maybe some of these kids don't have parents who would/could help.
Again, I'm not saying it wouldn't be the result of stupid decisions by the kids, but it wouldn't shock me if some student athletes did deal with this.
So it's entirely possible he's telling the truth.

Uconn although it was almost 20 years ago and the rules may have changed we had access to everything - burger king, sbarro, all the fast food and late night dining spots on campus. It wasn't unlimited of course but it was enough.
That said, my fridge was always packed and my apartment was stocked. If I wanted something at 2a I had it. But that was a product of my parents giving me enough to raid the grocery store. I don't know Napiers situation but during normal hours I was well taken care of and I wasn't close to Napiers stature as an athlete.
they have one. it's playing basketball for our entertainment. they should get paid for it.
