Thursday night football ... again

NFL wants Thursday night as big as Sun/Mon nights. RT @TonyStrong631 hearing Thursday schedule on cbs will involve marquee teams.

Like it or not
No. I really don't like it.
FatHeadTommy : 4/8/2014 11:24 am : link
Monday Night football was great because it extended the weekend of games and gave the week of work a good start. Thursday Night is just too much.

One of the best aspects of being an NFL fan (with other interests and activities (like wives)) was that the sport was pretty well contained to Sunday. And our wives could live with it. If it become an everyday sport, like baseball, it interferes too much with real life. Plus, on the east coast, the end of the games are late. Also a problem.

of Thursday games. Plus it is a disadvantage to teams to be given short weeks to prepare. With only 16 games every game needs the same prep time / plus just recovery time for players that might tweak something on Sunday.
Well if they are going to do them
Ben in Tampa : 4/8/2014 11:34 am : link
They might as well try and put better games on the slate. Last year was probably the worst prime time lineup of games in the history of prime time games.
apparently in the minority
GiantNatty : 4/8/2014 11:36 am : link
but i prefer thursday night to monday night. ESPECIALLY for the giants.

I think MNF gives the team's next opponent an unfair advantage. at the pro level, i don't think any team should have to play on less than a week's rest...unless both teams are doing so, as is the case for tnf games... then you get a couple extra days to rest.
Good!
muhajir : 4/8/2014 11:38 am : link
Better then watching reruns of Martin and the Wayans brothers on Thursday nights
This is a bad idea.
truebluelarry : 4/8/2014 11:39 am : link
Move all the good games to prime time, then what are we left with? The NFL is cannibalizing what ought to be its featured product - Sunday afternoon football.

but have to admit, I generally tune in to Thursday Night football unless the game is a total dud. The NFL knows what it's doing when it comes to making money

I never bought into the idea that the Thursday night games
Mike in Long Beach : 4/8/2014 11:41 am : link
were/are going to water down the product. Ultimately, my pleasure derives from my weekly Giants fix during football season and games being on more often throughout the week don't water that down.

The issue for me is, last year there definitely seemed to be a let down regarding the quality of the play. I initially thought the idea that teams can't prepare as well was overstated, but last year, it seemed to be very accurate.

In that sense I'm against the move to Thursday night. I'm not against more football. I'm against more shitty football.
Sunday night football has been much better than

Monday night for a while now.

I hate Giants games on Thursday night (except Thanksgiving)
NNJ Tom : 4/8/2014 11:52 am : link
I do like games when two teams we don't usually see (like Seahawks) play. I have no rooting interest so its just mindless entertainment at that point.

If bars have drink specials and wing deals, all the better.
Thursday games are inherently compromised

It's a gimmick. 3 days of rest is not enough
Thursday Football
stretch234 : 4/8/2014 12:17 pm : link
You can't bitch about it and then say how great Thanksgiving football is.

The schedule had every NFL team play 1 game on Thursday which is why some games are bad

They are going to be hard pressed to adjust that type of schedule because the networks who pay the big dollars are not going to lose marquee teams and matchups

Keep it with every team playing 1 time
Thursday night football sucks

the idea of better games on Thursday Night Football. It'll allow me to see more of the good games, rather than have those games be buried on Sunday afternoon local telecasts that can only be seen by people with Sunday Ticket. Good job NFL.
'You can't bitch about it and then say how great Thanksgiving football
schabadoo : 4/8/2014 12:55 pm : link
Why, they cancel Thanksgiving? You know, national holiday and all.
Love TNF
trueblueinpw : 4/8/2014 12:58 pm : link
Said it before, say it again, I love the Thursday night game. I'm one of those people that will watch pretty much any NFL product.

One thing about the Thursday night game is that for whatever reason, I usually don't have any schedule conflicts.

I also think they should do a second game on MNF and TNF with a later West coast start and location.
it's NFL football
I Love Clams Casino : 4/8/2014 1:02 pm : link
who gives a shit what day of the week?....seriously?

along those lines, I am balls out for a Saturday Night Superbowl...would be awesome!
I'm not a fan of Thursday
Matt in SGS : 4/8/2014 1:11 pm : link
football. I like Thanksgiving games, but mainly as a special occasion and the tradition. The watered down Thursday night games? Not so much.

But remember, the NFL used to play Friday Night games as well back in the mid 1980s (they tried to make it a tradition with the Rams and 49ers actually late in the season).

The NFL used to also play a number of Saturday afternoon games in the 1980s-2000s, also late in the season, and usually with the Giants playing on one day, and the Jets playing on the next (so the Meadowlands would get 2 games worth of revenue in one weekend).

If there is money to be made and the product holds up (ie- the games don't suck), I'm sure Goodell will push to do this in order to sell another TV package to the networks to cover it, or more sponsorships.
Honestly
giantsfan227B : 4/8/2014 1:17 pm : link
I would rather have an awesome Thursday night game and drop MNF altogether. MNF starting late sucks. Stay up to 11:30 or 12 and then exhausted the rest of the week. And if you have tickets you can basically ask for the next day off.

Thursday night is a great night to go out. Only 1 day left to the weekend. And if you need to take it off it is a 3 day weekend.
every team will still need to have 1 thursday game following a sunday
CGiants07 : 4/8/2014 1:28 pm : link
game. 4 teams will play a Saturday game and 2 teams playing on thanksgiving likely will play the following thursday
Just wait...
Amtoft : 4/8/2014 1:33 pm : link
Friday night football will be coming soon enough... 2-5 years my guess.
Friday and Saturday night football will not happen
JohnB : 4/8/2014 1:43 pm : link
High School have Friday nights and colleges have Saturday nights. The NFL isn't moving into that area. Thus Thursday, Sunday and Monday makes sense.

I liked it when they had Saturday night games AFTER the college regular season was done.
It's sports on TV
Jerry in DC : 4/8/2014 1:47 pm : link
so I'm not complaining about it. It's a chance to pay more attention to a game that we wouldn't have gotten if it were on at 1 or 4 on Sunday. You can just DVR it - flip through the commercials, or just :30 skip between plays. It's great - watch a whole game in 35 minutes.
I don't mind the Thursday night games
fbdad : 4/8/2014 1:48 pm : link
I just wish that if the league is going to continue to preach "safety of the players" that they'd back it up with scheduling. Make the Thursday night games between two teams that had a bye week the Sunday before instead of making teams try to play on 3 days rest.
During the season, football occupies
eclipz928 : 4/8/2014 1:50 pm : link
way too much of my time. My Sundays are completely shot because I'm basically watching football and coverage from 12pm to 12am. I like MNF because it makes for a nice cap to the week, and I can watch it without the distraction of 6 to 10 other games going on at the same time. And then I spend a lot of time with my fantasy teams during the rest of the week.

Thursday night football is too much. The NFL works when I can just isolate it to a single day of mindless preoccupation. I treat Sunday football as an "event" - but when its on Sunday, Monday, Thursday, and sometimes Saturday it starts to take up too much of the week and the buildup and excitement is lost.
I hate Thursday Night Football
Danny Kanell : 4/8/2014 1:50 pm : link
Mainly for the fact i'm just not ready for football at that point. NFL is a Sunday/Monday sport for me. It's too much.
I love it as a fan
Aaron in MA : 4/8/2014 1:55 pm : link
Ill take all the games I can. As a person, its probably not fair to the players.

I really miss the Saturday night games atthe end of the year. I ,loved those.
A big negative is that the Sunday 4pm schedule suffers
Go Terps : 4/8/2014 1:56 pm : link
It felt like there were a couple Sundays last year with only 3 games at 4 pm. If they blow, there's nowhere to go.
I liked the old Saturday games in December
Greg from LI : 4/8/2014 1:59 pm : link
No idea why they went away from that.
Terrible
GiantTuff1 : 4/8/2014 2:24 pm : link
It absolutely waters the product down.

And it's not just the players needing time to recover, it's the fans as well. When you have to wait 6-7 days patiently to see NFL football, that makes the buildup and games tremendous.

The NFL really risks over saturation with this... Remove Thursdays. Give Monday's a boost, and have Sun and Mon as the marquee. The old formula worked from both ends--player and fan recovery-- plus an improved product.

Enough of Thursday night's. You cannot tell me that this is for the betterment of the game, all about money and NFL eating more prime time slots up.
I like Thursday Football
djstat : 4/8/2014 3:51 pm : link
I am in the minority. But one game a season will not hurt teams and then they have an extra long break. More football is good.

I don't like it.
nicky43 : 4/8/2014 4:31 pm : link
It's unfair to the teams they force to play without the normal prep time and without enough rest. It's certainly not fair to the many diehard fans that finance the NFL.

But the NFL could care less about the fans or the players who won't get their much needed recovery rest. Instead they'll blame injuries on hard hits and continue to rule out the exciting plays. All the NFL cares about is MONEY. OUR MONEY!

It's also a pain for the many Fantasy Team owners that are forced to make their picks, trades, and starting lineups before many of the injury reports are out.

Now add to it the fact that the NFL wants to show KEY games on Thursday and it just makes it suck all the more. If Dallas is forced to play no key games or no really competitive teams on Thursday night but the Giants or the Eagles are, how fair would that be for the Giants and Eagles? Not fair and there really is no way to schedule out these little advantages that surely exist from Thursday night games without getting rid of them completely.

its a near lock that dallas will be involved in the back 2 back Thursday games in week 14

How is it unfair if every team is playing on Thursday one time during the season? Where is the unfairness?

I would understand if a few select teams are playing on Thursday's while others don't. But that isn't the case. Everyone is playing in it one time as is. So the "unfairness" (if we want to call it that) is spread out to all 32 teams.

Second, the "marquee games" deal is only for the first 8 weeks of the season for CBS. That is all. Nothing else. You can almost guess the teams they will use right now. Because of Thanksgiving, Dallas and Detroit will not be part of those 8 games.

After Week 8 when NFL Network gets the games again, it will be back to the dog matchups we have been used to getting. It has to if every NFL team is playing once on Thursday. The math of good teams to bad teams would say so.

The only downside I see to TNF is mentioned above
jcn56 : 4/8/2014 5:06 pm : link
the Sunday afternoon schedules can be a bit light from time to time, and if you catch a Sunday with 2-3 clunkers then you're taking the afternoon off. Other than that, no problem with it.

I dont necessarily have a problem with Thursday night football
MetsAreBack : 4/9/2014 9:59 pm : link
but they should bring back the two bye weeks. Health and time to prepare are important in putting forth a quality product. With two bye weeks for all teams you can ensure that each team in the Thursday game has 10 weeks to prepare for the matchup.

In this case you can also put more rivalry games in this time slot... as intensity builds for 'a big game'

The league is all about revenues... why they wont extend the season one week I don't know.
derp.... 10 days not weeks
