Evans likely off the board in the top 7?

DanMetroMan : 4/9/2014 8:41 pm

The Detroit Free Press passes along a "growing sense in league circles" that the Lions may be willing to trade up for Clemson WR Sammy Watkins.
Sitting at No. 10 overall, the Lions are currently positioned too low for Watkins, and are even likely out of range for Texas A& M WR Mike Evans, who doesn't figure to get by the Bucs at No. 7. Beat writer Dave Birkett calls the Lions "a team desperate to reverse its downtrodden luck." Lions brass dined with Watkins before his March Pro Day, and quizzed college teammate Martavis Bryant on Watkins during Bryant's pre-draft visit to Lions headquarters. "They just asked about how we got along and stuff like that," Bryant revealed. Detroit would almost certainly have to leapfrog Oakland (No. 5) to have a serious shot at Watkins.

Watkins is great
BigBlueShock : 4/9/2014 8:47 pm : link
But this is exactly why the Lions will always suck. That team has the best WR in the game, and a million holes on the team, so what will I they do? They will trade up for another WR. Giving up picks in the process.

Sexy moves...
get the feeling

the qb's are dropping like rocks.
Watkins and Johnson
Neverend : 4/9/2014 8:57 pm : link
is a scary, depressing thought. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen

but Detroit still has serious concerns over its secondary. they lost their safety, granted he was hurt all the time. they lost out on josh Wilson to Atlanta. they hosted aaron ross recently. they have great pass rushers but you need to cover. shit, but its obvious this whole offseason that Detroit has the hots for Watkins and it sucks
Detroit is stupid

they keep adding offense and receiver but lose games 44-35...

Why does it suck for Giants fans? That's a terrible move for Detroit. Giving up draft picks to land another WR? The rest of the team blows, aside from the D Line. I see nothing scary about the Lions making this move.
I'm not real big on mock drafts

But I think Evans is going to be a top 10 pick, I would say with 80+% confidence. There are a couple teams up there that could really use a bigger receiver, and I don't see the other needs matching up value wise.

STL
JAC
OAK
TB
BUF

are all teams that could use a top pick on Watkins or Evans.
Sy.....Agreed.

I think we are out of the running for Evans.
I

think Donald will be gone as well. Assume the following are gone:

Clowney.
Watkins.
Evans.
Robinson.
Mack.
Donald.
Matthews.
Bortles.
Carr.

That is nine. I think Tennessee will take Barr, so that leaves Lewan, Ebron, Gilbert, Manziel, and Bridgewater. In that situation, I would try and trade down, but think Jerry will take Ebron.

The real wild card as someone said is how teams view the QBs. If no or only one QB goes before us, then the remaining list of players gets even shorter. Cleveland and Oakland may feel they can get a QB later on. Manziel and Bridgewater seem the most likely to slide. There is also McCarron and Savage, the kid from Pitt, both of whom can be had on day two.
Detroit just signed Tate and has
LauderdaleMatty : 4/9/2014 10:38 pm : link
Megatron. Trading up 5 or so spots would cost them a lot for a position that is not a huge need at all.

If that many qbs drop
chopperhatch : 4/9/2014 11:19 pm : link
That will suck. I dont think trade down partners will be lining up. I think u biye the bullet and take Martin or Cooks (neither would be a bad choice at 12). Maybe not the best value there.

Any chance the Giants take one of the QBs and looks to trade him for picks?
good
chris r : 4/9/2014 11:29 pm : link
let someone else get their Mike Williams.
Btw,
chopperhatch : 4/9/2014 11:32 pm : link
Might be a good chance this is disinformation to get clubs to offer to trade up to get in the evans sweepstakes
I have a gut feeling that . . . .
TC : 4/9/2014 11:41 pm : link
IF Evans is still there at 12, the G's take him. If not, and Ebron is, they take him. If neither, they entertain a trade down, or take the best remaining OL.

I'm not implying it sucks for giants fans. I meant it would suck generally, for the entire league. A WR corps like that would be incredible upon comprehension if Watkins is as good as he should be. Its almost unfair, and it sucks. But, repeating the point I made, Detroit still has major needs in their secondary so its not a lock as it seems (plus trading up isn't easy)

Ebron

has to come into play in this scenario. We need to replace joseph. kuhn and Patterson will not do it. WR, Ol, will be available later. We also could look hard at LB with Mosley who could be BPA.
That would be a horrendous move for the Lions
illmatic : 4/10/2014 6:47 am : link
after signing Tate. To give up multiple picks to move up and make Tate the third WR? When they need help in other areas too? That would be crazy. Can't see it happening. Watkins will be a top 5 pick but it won't be to Detroit. I can see Evans falling to them at 10 but again, why waste your first rounder on a WR when you have Megatron and Tate? Their defense could use some help.
Sounds like
OlyWAJintsFan : 4/10/2014 6:55 am : link
Matt Millen is responsible for press leaks if the Lions are positioning for another WR.

I was under the impression that Detroit needed DB help first and foremost.

There's a reason the Lions have won 1 playoff game since 1958.

This. I forgot to list Martin. He's a possibility in this situation. So is CK. As I said, I would prefer to trade down if possible.
The Lions aren't taking a WR
BillT : 4/10/2014 8:00 am : link
Much less trading up for one. Tthey may not be the Pats but they aren't Matt Millon's Lions either.
I agree that it will be Evans or Ebron.
Curtis in VA : 4/10/2014 8:16 am : link
Red zone target is one of the top needs and might just be the best player on the board at the time.
Considering how aggressive JR has been...
Tark10 : 4/10/2014 8:43 am : link
Would it be possible that Reese may continue his overly aggressive posture in to the draft? If he really wanted Watkins or Evans, would he be willing to move up a few places and grab one of these guys? Watkins may cost too much, but if he is still there after the Vikes pick at 8.......Would he make a trade to select Evans?
I don't think they are going to trade up.
Curtis in VA : 4/10/2014 8:45 am : link
They aren't stupid like the Lions.

They are sitting in a great spot at 12 to get a great player. No need to move up and give away picks for somebody. Watch the chips fall and when its your turn, grab whoever is available.

There's a reason the Lions have never won anything in their entire existence.
I don't think these QBs are falling...
chrispisano66 : 4/10/2014 9:26 am : link
In fact, with the rise of Carr, I think it's possible 4 QBs are off the board by 12. It may take some trades up but I still think the rest of this league is well aware you need a good QB to win.

I think Jax, Cle, Min are all taking a QB. The key will be what Houston decides to do.

I get that he needs work on blocking, but with his size, this is just a matter if learning technique. Even IF you don't want him, I don't understand the strength of your statement. Would he be THAT big of a problem? I think he is already better than any TE available to us right now and with the proper coaching, he will be a tremendous boon to our offense. That said, there are players I would rather take, but I wouldn't be all praying to God that it doesn't happen and whatnot

The talking sports heads here saying that the Lions want a starting CB, and a top WR to take some of the heat off of Mega-Tron (not in any particullar order).
