Source tells me Josh Freeman will work out next week for the Giants. Maybe as early as Tuesday. He recently visited the Bears.

Josh Freeman may not be the only vet QB the Giants workout in the near future. They have also reached out to free agent QB Matt Flynn.

And counting ...

Great potential- if developed. TC could work wonders with this kid. He is not at the end of a career; he's still at the beginning. He ran into problems at the same time the entire Bucs Organization did. That speaks volumes. He could beat out Painter throwing with his other arm. He needs a good supporting staff and good coaching, and a wake up kick in the ass. Unfortunately for him, he would be coming to a team in transition with unknowns in many respects. But he is worth a look.

Chris in Philly : 4/11/2014 12:29 pm : link
If he displays that work ethic here, he's gone. No harm, no foul. But his physical tools make it more worth an investment of time and coaching than a nobody like Painter...

You don't remember the numerous arguments on here in Freeman's first two years? I believe it was started do to an espn poll that had freeman ranked higher then Eli. And a good amount of posters piled on. And they weren't all trolls. I don't keep tabs on handles.

I don't want any part of that train wreck.
How many draft picks do we get for Eli
DelZotto : 4/11/2014 12:35 pm : link
I'm sure the new OC has said Eli just doesn't fit his offense and Flynn and Freeman will battle it out, not to mention the twenty million to fill out the roster.

you guys are focused on giving him a pass for his 'effort' against us last year only one week on his new team - which is fine - ....but you've completely omitted all the reports about just how bad his work ethic was as a member of the Vikings. Just do a google search.

There is a reason a team well out of contention didnt consider starting him again the rest of the season even as Ponder & Cassell continued to show week-after-week that neither was the answer.

I'm assuming if the Giants wind up signing him, they've done their due diligence and have reason to believe it won't continue to be an issue going forward. If it is, he's gone. I'd think a guy like Josh Freeman probably has to realize sooner than later that he's running out of chances and that he'd be best served by putting in the work to be a good player again.

Ability-wise, he's a big upgrade over the Curtis Painters of the world. If he can get his head on straight, that's a backup QB you can actually win a couple games with god-forbid Eli gets hurt.

I'd like for it to work out. If the Giants determine that his work ethic is still in question and opt not to sign him, so be it.

All I remember is the righteous indignation that Eli was too low, but he has always had a cadre of haters I guess...

If the Giants are suddenly looking at Josh Freeman and Matt Flynn, it's not just as camp arms. Sounds like there is real concern about Eli.

to have an actual QB as a backup - whether it's Freeman or Flynn I don't care too much. Eli has been remarkably durable, but injuries are unpredictable. One of these guys could come in and play and potentially not be terrible.
Flynn would be the optimal backup. Solid, but no threat to Eli.
Victor in CT : 4/11/2014 1:30 pm : link
Knows the system having played in GB, had success when called upon. And still relatively young.
.
arcarsenal : 4/11/2014 1:34 pm : link
Flynn knows what they ran in GB.. we aren't running GB's offense. It may have some of the same elements but I don't know why every time a Packer player comes up, someone inevitably mentions that they "already know the offense."
Necessity
RetroJint : 4/11/2014 1:47 pm : link
for camp arms isn't as urgent sine the development of the truncated camp schedules I said this earlier in the Spring & I think it still should be considered. Eli's at the point in his career where he should take nothing for granted. If one of these guys, including Nassib, shows Reese something , change at QB could come in 15. These guys cut Phil Simms. Reese is an unsentimental prick. Could happen

that's a good point arc. TC has said that it is a "new offense" that will incorporate both KGs and BMs. We'll see
Real concern over Eli?
BlueLou : 4/11/2014 2:18 pm : link
If there IS "real" concern over Eli, it might just as well be how much longer he wants to play vs whether or not he'll bounce back well from this arthroscopic ankle procedure IMO.

Eli has at times struck me as a guy that could "walk away" easily enough whenever he feels the time is right. And the right time for him may not be, like Peyton, chasing every single career statistical passing record there is. He already has his 2nd ring. If Eli should get a 3rd ring, I can see him and TC walking out the door hand in hand.

According to their wonderlic scores, Eli is the smarter of the 2 brothers...
This is a joke, right?

All I can think of is how much the Bucs wanted to unload Freeman and how thrilled I was when we played the Vikes later in the season and had to face Freeman. He was absolutely awful overthrowing receivers constantly. He's also got a pretty high opinion of himself. I, for one, don't want him.
Eli
Dragon : 4/11/2014 2:40 pm : link
Numbers are very close to Freeman the last two years so not sure if this is a good or bad move.
Eli could also use another vet
Simms11 : 4/11/2014 2:52 pm : link
QB in the meeting room to go over stuff with, as well. Someone that has been there when the bullets were flying. Painter, to me, is the guy who should be camp fodder. Freeman and Flynn both have some pelts. Nassib may still need fine tuning before he would be given the keys to the car. This is a good thing and is not an indictment of Eli's play or injury.

Eli: 32 Games started; 638 comp; 1087 att; 58.7 comp; 7766 yds; 44 TDs; 21 INTs

Freeman: 20 Games started; 369 comp; 705 att; 48.9 comp; 4826 yds; 29 TDs; 21 INTs

Which definition of close are you using?

Has sucked the last two years with numbers which are very close to Freeman like numbers when being a full time starter. In fact their career numbers are very similar except for the years played let's not act like Eli is godly ok.

Should Eli stink up the field again this year who will get the blame? The OL, RB's and Nicks have all been improved upon or sent packing.

Here's what it says: painter is there to be a human shield because nassib is a rookie and not prepared to play. That's it. It's not a referendum on nassib's potential or painters talent,
Better than anything we've had?
KWALL : 4/11/2014 4:54 pm : link
Freeman is known as a lazy bum. Doesn't want to put in the time or work. Not really what you want with your backup.
There's little question Freeman is talented......
BillKo : 4/11/2014 4:58 pm : link
he's proven it. He had one oustanding year in the league, was a high draft choice, and Tampa was preparing to build around him.

However, he's also proven to be a lazy pro athlete which has attributed to his downfall.

I wouldn't trust this guy.

You don't think Josh Freeman is better than Curtis Painter, David Carr, Jared Lorenzen, etc? I sure do. It's fair to question his work ethic but he's much more talented than guys like that and quite frankly it's not even that close.

And if not he's gone. Absolutely no risk and there's nothing not to like about the move. Unless of course you have an unhealthy attachment to a bully failure of a coach just because he coached your college team...
I can never figure out the objection to these low risk moves
jcn56 : 4/11/2014 9:25 pm : link
It's not like Freeman is going to get millions. The most you're risking on him is a roster spot, which you can get back at any time.

It's almost like the hand wringing over the 7th rounder for Beason.
Something to consider
Sneakers O'toole : 4/11/2014 9:39 pm : link
Eli is going to be coming off of surgery. That means they need QB's for OTA's and minicamp, let alone training camp if there is any sort of setback with Eli.

These two QB's, Freeman and Flynn, both have experience in aspects of the Giants offense. Freeman played under Sullivan, and Flynn came from the Packer variant of the WCO.

They may be looking for guys that can hit the ground running to help get them through the offseason, in addition to the goal of providing competition and extra arms in camp.

While Eli is limited, you still have to get work to your other skill players. QB's that have at least some idea of what you're trying to do help you get that.

Wait... Eli has only thrown 21 picks over the past 2 years. I challenge that. I bet its double.

But he's still a lot better than Freeman. Two superbowl rings aside (which... is kind of a big deal), at least he's not a grade A lazy asshole like Freeman is.

Eli threw 27 picks last year and 15 in 2012. Step your fuckin' game up, kid.
