is Eli on his last contract with the Giants?

Hades07 : 4/11/2014 9:57 am
At the end of this contract Eli will be 35 and the team is reluctant right now to extend and lower his cap number. Do you think the team may be thinking this is the last contract they plan on letting him play it out and walk at the end?

He had a career high in sacks on him...
Britt in VA : 4/11/2014 11:57 am : link
at the midway point of the year.

He stood behind a decimated line all the way until the last game of the season, in the pouring rain behind a patchwork line, when he didn't have to, and took a complete beating and got hurt.

You want to talk about guts and mental toughness, that's what I think about. Not statistics.

dontboobigblue : 4/11/2014 11:58 am : link
I have no idea why you responded like that. Weird.

Take it easy, you're not on the team. Just my opinion. Eli is not a great QB. He's a good QB. Clear gap between him and guys like Brees, Rodgers, Brady, and his brother.

Those guys are GREAT qbs who dominate week to week. Eli goes through painful stretches GREAT qbs don't.

Fact.

Don't confuse duck and chuck with mental toughness. Eli completed 55% of his passes to Giants and 5% to the other team for a 60% completion percentage. His passer rating was 59th in the NFL which means approximately 30 back-up out- performed him as a thrower last year.

No that means that 20 something non-QBs who threw a pass or 2 finished above him. Eli was 35th among qualifiers, which still sucks but let's at least get the facts a little closer to reality.
At the end of the day
AnishPatel : 4/11/2014 12:10 pm : link
He will be damn close to top 10 in all time TDs and passing yards, with 2 SB MVPs. Moreover, if we can win or at least go 8-8, during his tenure when he started this past season could be his only losing season for us when he started a full season.

That's pretty damn good.
As I said...
Britt in VA : 4/11/2014 12:11 pm : link
History will be kinder to him than fans are now.

In the big picture, he's had a phenominal career, if it ended today, no matter how you slice it.

A lot of you are going to miss him when he's gone.

Ding ding ding!

The fact that the team hasn't extended him this offseason to gain additional cap space is very telling (no matter what is said publicly). This is going to be a huge season for Eli and this team. I don't want to use the term "make or break" for a 2 time Super Bowl MVP QB but this seasons will have a huge impact on how the Giants view the position going forward and whether they start planning for his replacement beginning next offseason.

You're 1000% correct. If you go to any fan base and say..

You will make a ballsy trade for a QB.

In 10 years you will have 2 SBs. He will have SB MVPs, and in that 10 years you're team will have 1 losing season. This QB will also be a class act and not an off field issue. Moreover, he will have a shot at top 10 all time in TDs and passing yards.

Would you sign for him?

Let's see how many fucking fan bases say no thanks to that.

Now it would be interesting if you told that fan base it's Eli and what their reaction would be.

Still, I want to see how many fan bases would say no thanks to that.

How do you measure greatness? Stats? I know I keep bringing him up, but Elway wasn't any sort of statistical monster.

He's remembered as a great QB, a HOF QB, because of those big moments. The 4th quarter comebacks and the clutch play.

Until his last five years, Elway regularly threw more INTs than TD's.

What does having an all-time highlight have to do with how good
Riggies : 4/11/2014 12:29 pm : link
a player actually is/was?

Eli has been a very good, but inconsistent QB that has had massive highs and massive lows. He's the best QB the Giants have ever had, when you factor in both longevity and accomplishment, but most people are going to understandably view him as the third best of his own draft class and beyond guys like Brees or Rodgers.

It is beyond wrong to say something like he's "nothing special" (and there's a fair case that he probably would have become a better player on another team) or to ever regret or question the team acquiring him like some still stupidly do, but it's not wrong to say he's not been/isn't all-time NFL great, in the big picture, either.
Some perspective on Eli
Go Terps : 4/11/2014 12:30 pm : link
The joy he gave us in performing two Super Bowl winning drives is greater than the experience of the entire existence of many franchises. Add up every good moment in Eagle history and that doesn't approach the joy of the Tyree play and how that game played out. He could have retired immediately after that game and he would have been golden forever. Instead he went and did it again.

There isn't a stat line in the world that could possibly equal that. I don't give a shit at all where people rank him or if they consider him elite...what was actually done was singular and historic, and can never be undone.
He's going to the Hall of Fame.

Oh yeah and Cleveland, the Jax. Fuck, I think the teams in our division would go for it. Jerry would love 2 SBs. Eagles fans would def. do it. Redskins have been a joke for so long.

A shitty franchise would have named streets after Eli right now.
The only negative I could say about Eli
mrvax : 4/11/2014 12:35 pm : link
is that he's been inconsistent.

Eli is not a robot like Peyton. He helped orchestrate the greatest upset in NFL history and also the greatest play.
Or very consistent
AnishPatel : 4/11/2014 12:39 pm : link
in terms of big picture. 10 years with 1 losing season is consistent and that's with 2 OCs and what, 4 DCs now? One can say, wow we must produce amazing coaches. Nope, only Spags went on in the NFL to be HC. Everyone else not so much.

Player have come, players have gone. At the end of the day, we counted on Eli, who consistently showed up and played. He never missed a game. With all that in flux, we achieved a lot and only had 1 losing season. That's freaking amazing.

If Eli was inconsistent we probably don't win SBs and we certainly would have more than 1 losing season in a decade. Once Hufangel was hired Eli became a much better player.

I am very happy for this new system. I hope we can finally do things like other QBs in other systems can do.
Consistent is the most mangled word in sports
Go Terps : 4/11/2014 12:46 pm : link
It's been co-opted to mean "good", when that is not actually what it means.

For example..."Peyton Manning's level of play in playoff games has consistently fallen short of his regular season performance, and his teams have suffered in the postseason as a result."

That is an accurate use of the word "consistent", and an example where consistency is not desired. I don't know why it is important to fans to be able to predict Eli's stat line...it isn't necessarily an accurate barometer of winning titles.

If stats are what you're into, great. Put Phil Rivers's stats in a frame and hang them on your wall.
Britt
dontboobigblue : 4/11/2014 12:52 pm : link
I measure greatness on the ability to dominate each and every week for seasons on end. Eli doesn't do that. He routinely has major swoons during the season.

The top QBs in TODAYS NFL don't do that. Peyton Manning, Brady, Rogers, Brees are dominate qbs. They put up yards, tds, etc and throw WAAAAY less touchdowns. Those players are significantly better than Eli. He hasn't come close to having the type of season those players have had. He's never had anything close to an MVP caliber season.

I love the guy. Great Giant. Champion. But he's not a great qb.

GT
AnishPatel : 4/11/2014 12:53 pm : link
I call Rivers Mr. Stats. Same with Romo. They don't do shit, more so Romo in elevating their franchise with playoff wins and SBs, but hey, they do get stats year after year.

If Eli can do that now the rest of his career, that would be awesome since he already has the SB wins.
Do you think John Elway is an all time great QB?
Britt in VA : 4/11/2014 12:54 pm : link
?
To be fair, Eli's 2011 was MVP caliber in most seasons.
Riggies : 4/11/2014 12:56 pm : link
Rodgers absolutely 100% deserved to win, as things fell out and how it's voted on, but there probably wasn't a player in the league as critical to his team not being a steaming heap of shit as Eli was that season.
Britt
dontboobigblue : 4/11/2014 12:57 pm : link
I'm 28. I didn't get to see Elway play enough to make that determination.

He's universally accepted as one. Eli is not.

Honestly, I don't think we win Eli's first Super Bowl if Peyton or anybody else for that matter was the Giants QB for that game. Eli completed passes that very few QBs would even attempt. That is what has made Eli both great and horribly inconsistent.

I was hoping for more discussion about what Eli will be for the next two years in this thread and what the Giants may be planning with him. Many people though seem to be thinking along the same lines as me. There isn't a plan to let him go after two seasons, but they are leaving it possible to do so if it becomes necessary.
That's cool, I think Eli is a lot like Elway, minus the legs...
Britt in VA : 4/11/2014 1:00 pm : link
Take a look at John Elway's numbers through the years.

He played at a time where his peers like Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelly were putting up monster statistical seasons passing the ball.

Greatness isn't always measured by numbers.

And Jim Kelly. He rather chose to leave the NFL than play in Buffalo. The league or team folded and then he came back to Buffalo.
I depends on how he plays
Jerry in DC : 4/11/2014 1:13 pm : link
If he sucks for the 3rd year in a row, it would be pretty dumb for the Giants to continue donating $20 million a year to his estate. If he plays well, there's a case for keeping him around.

He's been one of the most overpaid players in the league for the past two years and he's getting old. Committing to an old, expensive QB who's playing terrible football isn't exactly a recipe for success. But if he comes back strong we could get a few more years out of him.

Eli's inconsistencies are more from one play or drive to another.

Watching Eli, I expect him to attempt very high risk passes. Sometimes it works out, the famous Tyree helmet catch, other times that same pass turns into an interception. If you look at that play, it was a very high risk stupid play to attempt, but it worked so he is a hero and he should be. Without that play we don't win and Eli knows that, he takes the risks because if he doesn't we will lose anyway. He'd rather lose by trying, and I for one love rooting for him because of it. It is why I can deal with those "boneheaded" interceptions as a fan, because without his willingness to take those risks, I'd have watched 3(maybe 2) SB victories and not 4.
Too Soon To Tell
Percy : 4/11/2014 1:29 pm : link
Play next year, identifying and figuring out how to obtain his successor, seeing if that candidate is really going to be able to do the job, OL and WR quality, stuff like that blurs the picture. If Eli can still play well at 34, he can do it for a couple of more years while all those other things get worked out. Then he gets a new deal. Otherwise not, especially if the pieces needed for QB success are still not in place.

If he doesn't, well, as a franchise you make a business decision to move on, because QB play is the most important factor for sustained success.

Whatever the case, after the first SB, Eli could've retired and I'd have loved him forever. After the second SB, well, as long as he doesn't turn into some heinous criminal, Eli will always be my favorite Giant. That first SB was the happiest sporting moment of my life.

Two years that is all that is written in stone. I have been thinking about it over the last few months other players were cut and taking pay cuts. Eli Manning will not be the starting QB for this team at the end of decade. Giants rightfully are going to expect a significantly smaller contract when this one is up.
